Sound in after effects?

For some reason, sound layers do not preview in after effects. Does anyone know why and how I could change that?

  • 5.1 sound in After Effects?

How do I import and export 5.1 sound in After Effects?
    I have version 5.5.
The file will then be converted to a dcp file
    /Mattias

The sound comes from an editor who is a pro and knows how to deliver 5.1.
I also have premiere ( 5.5 ) so I guess I can import the film and the audio in there and then export for a convert to DCP.
Or if I understand you right I can use a CDP processing software like
    http://www.magnamana.com/finaldcp-released/
and there I import still images and the sound seperate?
    That´s how it works?

  • Help me! cant preview sound in after effects CS4 ;(

Hey there , I am currently working on a project and i have beeen having some probelms in after effects cs4 running on 32 bit Windows 7.

Any idears on what to do :S

You can change the amount of audio that is rendered for previews, which can be useful if you're running into memory problems.
The amount of audio that is rendered for previews is specified by the Duration setting in the Previews preferences.

  • No sound in After Effects?

I have After Effects CS5.5 and can't hear any audio within the program (minus the "beep") when something finishes rendering).  Anyways I was watching this tutorial on youtube and the creator of the video had audio in his.  Several people in the comments mentioned not having audio so apparently this is a common problem.  Anything I can do to get the audio on?
    Thanks,
    -WooDy

That's right.  Here's a screenshot I recently took for a similar post.  It's a list of places to check when you're not hearing audio.
a.) Make sure the audio switch is turned on for the layer.
b.) Make sure the clip itself actually has audio and the db setting makes it audible by checking the waveforms.
c.) Make sure the audio switch is turned on in the Ram Preview Panel.

  • Sequence from Premiere Pro has no Sound in After Effects

I created a video Premiere CS5.5 and would now like to take the final cut into After Effects CS5.5. I exported the file as an AVI
(NTSC DV, uncompressed audio) and it plays well in every player I've tried it in. However, now that I'd like to just drop the file into AE the
audio will not play. There is a waveform being displayed for the layer but the audio mixer display doesn't even react when I play it in AE.
    Any thoughts?

    Audio enabled in Preview Panel?
Does audio play when you press the . on the numeric keypad or pick Composition>Preview>Audio?
Are you using the 0 key on the numeric keypad or the Preview button on the Preview Panel to generate a ram preview?
Will a standard wav file play?
    Are you an AE Newbie?
Did you read this FAQ on audio playback?
Did you read the AE Help file on Audio Preview and Playback?

  • No audio or sound in After Effects CC

I have imported footage that works fine in Prelude but not at all well in AE. There is always a problem with the imported footage. But mainly there is never any audio or sound. I have read a few other post and tried the recommended solutions to no avail.

We need to know a lot more if we're going to help you. Please provide answers to the questions listed here: "FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?"

  • No sound in after effects c6

i cant hear anything when i use it... no sound coming from the videos!
i have done Ram preview and still no sound...
    i have intel i7 processor
    windows 8 64 bit
need help asap this expensiveness windows 8 only brought me errors to the table

If AE shows no audio waveform, it doesn't see your audio track. It is as simple as that. We're still stuck in square one - eitehr you don't have the CoDec on your system, it's generally not compatible with AE or something is up with your audio hardware. use an external conversion tool and verify the file in a media player.

  • No sound in After Effects upon reopening the project.

    Hi there,
I don't know if this is a glitch or something that I am just completely overlooking.  I have a fairly complex project with lots of pre-comps within pre-comps.  The footage is MTS files.  I just opened this project up after sitting idle for 2 months, only to find that I cannot get any audio to play when I do a ram preview.
I've confirmed the audio box is checked in the ram preview options.
I've confirmed the file DOES have audio outside of AE.
Because there are several precomps I have gone to the deepest comp to play the actual layer with the audio to try that.  Nothing.  Even the waveform is flat.  However, if I reveal the file in the project and RAM preview it I DO hear audio.
Two months ago it played fine and I'm sure the waveform showed up fine as well- though I rarely look at it so I can't confirm the visual of it.
Am I just missing something?  My other projects are playing fine...
    Thanks!
    -Stephen

The files may have multiplexed, or muxed, audio: the audio's embedded in the video track.  You could hear it in a player, but AE wouldn't be able to play it or even see the tracks: it needs a separate audio track.
The fix: use a different application to export a wave or aiff file of the audio, and use it in AE.

  • Export Audition Spectral Display to After Effects

I want to analyze sounds in Audition, then export the combined waveform and spectral displays, along with the sounds, to After Effects, where I will add text.
First step, I suppose,  would be to save Audition display (as .mov, I suppose).
    Is this correct?
    Is it possible?
    How should I start?
    Thanks,
    George

You will need some screensaver software to save Audition's graphics.

  • How to enable sound scrolling in After Effects?

So basicly what im trying to do is be able to scroll through my compisition with the mouse and hear sound like in Sony Vegas is this possiple?  So if i drag my mouse over footage sound will play. Also can you enable keyframes on a mask?
    Thanks so much!

According to this page in the Adobe Help you can preview audio by ctrl+alt+drag the current timeline indicator. It also has a lot of other useful info about previewing in AE.
Now, keep in mind, previewing audio and video in AE is very different from non-linear editors like Vegas. Rick Gerard had a good explanation for this:
Sony Vegas, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Avid are all NLE's (Non Linear Editors) and they are specifically designed to playback a video stream. With any of them, if you stack enough layers or effects on the video they will have to render a new video stream based on pixel based calculations for every pixel in the stack. This rendering, especially for HD sources or for complex plug-ins, will take quite a bit of time.
After Effects, Flame, Fusion, Shake -- are all pixel based image processing applications that act very much like Photoshop. They calculate the values of every pixel in every frame, come up with a new pixel, and then play those pixels back as a video stream. More importantly, AE and all the other pixel based compositing apps, always work internally with completely uncompressed pixel data. NLE's rely on codecs and in some cases, hardware, to playback the video. It's an entirely different way of working with moving images.
In After Effects you enable the preview by loading a bunch of frames into RAM then the video stream is played back. You start the process with the 0 key on the numeric keypad and not with the Space Bar as you do in nearly every NLE ever created. The length of the preview depends entirely on how much free ram you have available and it takes some time to generate these new pixels. The more layers, the more effects, the more calculations that need to be performed the longer it will take to process the RAM preview. There's currently no way around this rendering time. A modern NLE will handle an amazing number of video streams simultaneously, but as soon as you exceed the capability of the system you're stuck with a render. Most NLE's, given the same number of calculations, actually take a little longer than After Effects to do the same kind of effects. Open GL, and other GPU acceleration helps many NLE's achieve higher performance but it has yet to be implemented into a pixel based compositing app. The sad truth of the matter is that if you want to do compositing in any of the available compositing apps, you have to wait for renders. They are getting better. Memory management and efficiency is improving. GPU accelerated effects are being added, but for now, that's about as good as it gets.
I hope this helps. As long as you use After Effects to create shots and don't try to make it do the work of a NLE you should be fine. Movies come from NLE's, amazing shots come from AE.

This page has links to lots of information about animating masks and shape layers.
It sounds like you're a beginner in AE. You should really start here to get a foundation in the basics before you just jump into it.

  • Problem with sound when import from Premiere into After Effects

    Hi!
I imported a sequence from a Premiere Pro project using File -> Import -> Adobe Premiere Project...
The video in the sequence showed up in the After Effects project as a composition.  However, the composition did not include the sound from the sequence!  Is there a way to keep the sound from the sequence upon import into After Effects?
    Thanks

i`m sorry about the screenshot size, but i could only upload pics with 605 px width.
Nevertheless it seems that you saved my day. looks like it was all about the scale to framesize thing.
    thank you so much!!!!

  • Exporting Video w/ Sound From Premiere Doesn't Play Correctly in After Effects.

I export a video from Premiere with sound and Import it into After Effects, however the sound seems to be sped up and glitching. The wave form is compressed and shows that the sound does not play for the actual duration of the video?

We can't know. You have neither provided any exact export settings nor any other useful info like system info, versions, audio hardware prefs and so on.

  • Switched to After effects CC today and my imported voice over sounds like buffalo bill ( very low)

    Hi guys,
Today I switched to after effects cc and I am super excited about it . Unfortunately while trying to sync my audio to animations I found that it was distorted and made my voice sound very deep and low. I read this might have been a problem a while ago but there has patch released that fixes it and I have the most up to date version of after effects cc. What am I missing?

  • After Effects error opening sound componant (-2166)

    Hi
Im  getting this error message( After Effects error-opening sound componant (-2166 )
When i go to render a comp that icludes several sound files (WAV) the render stops 80% of the time.is there a way to fix this.
Im rendering to Quicktime  based on losssles  or AVI based on lossless
    Windows XP service pack 3
    3 gigs ram
    quad core
Quicktime pro latest version installed november 2009

This could happen for any of several reasons, including the sound files using sample rates or a number of channels that After Effects can't handle. After Effects is not the best at working with audio. I recommend converting the audio files to another format (such as AIFF), ensuring that the sample rate is something standard, making sure that the files are just plain old stereo, and trying again.

  • NO SOUND or Effects in After Effects CS5

I just spent 6 hours trying to get sound to play in AE in Windows 7 with no luck.  I tried every common sense thing I could come up with including pressing space bar, and pressing things in the preview pane.  Then I read all FAQ's and found out not to use space bar, but to try to scrub audio etc.  Then I tried to "change output module settings" but nothing matched with the faq.   If it said to do something, it usually didn't exist unless you somehow got to the part they discussed.    But eventually I found the checkbox and it didn't help.  I tried changing things in the final box when you go to render, to render audio, but that didn't work.  I know my computer has all the right hardware/drivers because I have many other sound and video editing programs which work with no problems. I also have ASIO as an option to try.   I went into edit-preferences->audio hardware, and the audo output mapping with no luck.  I re-installed windows 7 with a clean install after formatting, and set up with the most basic settings and that didn't work either.
Also no matter what I do, I can not get sound to export with the video as AE strips the audio out.  In fact I can't get any video effects to export.  I tried everything above and nothing helped.  I could even at points see the audio waveform in the editor.  Plus I know the video has audio.  But to make sure I tried 4 or 5 more videos and sometimes in different formats and that didn't work.  After spending this much time, I find this pretty counter intuitive given that every other editor like Sony Vegas etc, simply assumes a default that you want to be able to hear the audio track when playing, and assumes if you put effects on, they should render to the output file.  Then they give you ways to turn this off.  At any rate, I feel pretty stuck at this point. If anyone knows how to get sound within the program, or verify it's working I'd appreciate it.  Also a way to export the effects to the output render file would also be useful.  Thanks.

"A useless fluff question"?  lol.  I would have been happy to provide more info, but it's not a fluff question and no need to be insulting.  Especially when it sounds like you don't understand how AE works your self.  Sorry to be blunt about that, but most of what you needed to know was in that question.  So you're telling me that your only "useful" information is knowing about my motherboard or audio chipset?  Had I posted just that you would have likely told me it wasn't useful and ask me to describe the problem in more detail.   I was already trying not to make the post too long because people tend to skip things.  I asked for a simple way to verify my sound was working because I was unfamiliar with AE, and for all I knew I wasn't using the program correctly.  That's a logical approach and should have been the first step.  Anyone who knew anything about AE could have told me to look at the speaker icon, or confirm the preview pane could play sound after rendered. Or given me a simple 1,2,3 quick list to check the sound. Then we could have proceeded from there.
Did you provide any of that to save time?  No.  It seems you skipped it.  Then you ask me what 3rd party codecs I have installed.  What part about me reformatting my ssd and clean installing windows 7 didn't you get?  You say there wasn't useful information, but did you even read that?  With a clean install, obviously all codecs are provided by Microsoft up until the point that After Effects was installed and it added a few of its own.  The only exception was the addition of quicktime after the program was 1st tried without it.  Again, 100% clean, fresh system with 100% working hardware.  But here:  I have an x58 board with core i7 at 4ghz, 12GB ram, using windows 7 built in drivers for high definition audio device, standard version 6.1.7600.16385  working w/ onboard chipset.  I was also avoiding installing my creative labs x-fi to keep it as simple as possible.  But regardless, AE doesn't communicate with hardware, but the API, as well.  Which is why the sound options for WDM and/or ASIO were provided in the settings of AE as mentioned.   That should have been the biggest clue that I was just misunderstanding some step in AE's operation.
That said, I found other ways to verify sound was working.  One was to hold the appropriate key while scrubbing and audio and video play simultaneously.  One easy click did it.   Only thing is I have to manually move the cursor to hear it. Another was to look at the speaker cone icon on the track.  Finally I found that changing the work area size and doing ram-preview let me hear sound anywhere in the video in sections.  That made a lot more sense than it jumping to the beginning of the video and trying to render the entire clip.  I also found out about adding to the render que which solved the problem of no sound in my outputed video.   So maybe I can get points on this board for solving my own question? LOL.
And as I found out, the where-is-the-sound question is the most common in After Effects.  Yet the FAQ's do an absolutely horrible job at making that clear.  Sure it may be buried in some abstract way, but if it were my company I'd have an awesome step by step section on explaining the deal with sound and what to expect.  Or better I'd allow real time sound playback whenever it could render at 100% or faster as in other programs. Or maybe even 80%. It's kind of distrubing a $1000 program has such inefficient online resources for the most basic things.  I can see reading a manual to learn the cool more intricate things, but playing back sound should work out of the box with NO questions asked.  If that's not possible, it should come with a great explanation, or read me or something that grabs a persons attention quickly as soon as they install it.  That said, it took me longer, but I figured everything out on my own.
