Sound in Project Skimmin

I know about command-k to turn on and off skimming, so that is NOT the issue.
I can turn sound on and off while skimming the event library, but a number of times when I start editing a project, suddenly there is no sound when I'm skimming the video in the project. I try command-k, but that does nothing. It effects sound for the event library, but NOT for the project.
This last time I was skimming and heard sound at the start of my clip, then after a few seconds, suddenly there was no sound at all on the project clip unless I pressed "space" to play. No skimming sound. When I exit iMove and restart, I hear sound again.
What turns sound on and off *for a project* clip?

No, my entire project is aiff. I even exported the entire project to QT .dv, creating a single file and extracted the audio. I did replace the first clip with a png. picture by importing and creating a .dv file.
It worked once (best I can remember). But when I exported to .dv wouldn't that clear anything like that up? Sorry, I been out of town for a few day. Thanks for your response. I have a message also in the iMovie discussions. Strange.

So I created a new Track but it wasn't soloed. Stymied. Finally I created a new Software Track and that was soloed, which I of course un-soloed and problem solved.
Just an FYI.

Deleted a track some time ago that had the solo button down. didn't know at the time because i had others in solo mode also... Took the track out of solo no sound. I couldn't undo because i had already save the project. Just trying to get back..

No Sound in Project with Imported MPEG 4

I am new to iDVD.
My first project is to just make a video from a short MPEG 4 movie clip.
I imported the movie into iDVD and dropped it in. It plays fine except there is NO sound.
When I press the select button in the on screen remote it plays the clip with sound.
Any help appreciated.

the iLife package is a ... ehm... package, a suite of tools, which are intended to work together... therefore, iM is meant to work with firewire connected miniDV (=no mepgs), iDVD is meant to work with output of this app (=dv) ... and so on...-
they are NOT meant as "all-purposes"-app... as many PCuser like to use Word for layouts, Excel for painting, PowerPoint for moviemaking... nooo, in the Apple World simplicity&convience is accomplished by restrictions of the app ..
in other words: you try to teach the old dog new tricks... means: could work, could not work..
and as mentioned above: video codecs is a VERY complicated issues.. there're ~4000 codecs swirrling thru the web...
if you use the iApps as intended, no double-import etc are needed...
think about investing into tools as QTpro or VisualHub (http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/), which are "converters".. iDVD expects "dv-streams"... THEN it works like charm...

Sound bar project

Hi all,
I am a third year student in management industry and I need to make an easy project that receives sound through the microphone and above a certain volume flashes or alternatively makes a beep. Although I have done many experiments in LabVIEW I couldn't build the program. Can somebody please help me?

Sound looping question

hello everyone!
i'm pretty new to using flash (i only need to use it for a uni sound design project) and i'm having some problems.
what i'd like to do is create a button, and loop sounds in the "up" state of that button. the only problem is, that if i import the sound to the "up" keyframe and choose loop in the properties it keeps looping until the end of time. what i'd like though is it looping just in the event of the mouse being in the buttons' area. what should i do?

1) create button
2) doubleclick on the button (edit)
3) create extra layer for sounds
4) in this layer, create empty keyframes for all states (UP, OVER, DOWN, HIT);
5) add the sound to the OVER keyframe in sounds layer, set it to SYNC: Start, Loop
6) add the sound to the UP keyframe in sounds layer, set it to SYNC: Stop, Loop

MacBook Pro connected to TV via rocketfish. Picture but no sound.

I have successfully projected computer screen onto to tv through rocketfish; however, sound is not coming from tv--just computer. How do I get sound to project through tv?

how is it connected? display port to hdmi?
What year is your macbook. IIRC, only recent macbook pro's output sound through hdmi. If that is your case, you will need to run a cable from the computers headphone jack to the TV

Compressor encoded speed change clip with echo as motorboat sound

Took me two days to troubleshoot, through trial and error and process of elimination, why Compressor encoded an audio clip that had been speed changed and echo applied to it -- as rapid MOTORBOAT sound! Project is a 5.1 mix. Since STP3 won’t accept speed change clips, after I completed mix in STP I placed speed changed clips on FCP timeline below the exported STP 5.1 mix with the FCP audio tracks for that clip assigned to channels 1 & 2 for the fronts and channels 5 & 6 for the rears. The clip on 5 & 6 was duplicated and identical in every way to the clip on channels 1 & 2. Only the dupe clip on 5 & 6 did Compressor encode as motorboat. The identical clip on 1 & 2 encoded correctly. Both clips were set to play at same time since I wanted the effect to be on fronts and rears simultaneously. I could not get the motorboat sound to play back from either FCP timeline or Compressor preview window. Only after encode and burn to DVD did it show up. Why would Compressor introduce such artifacts on one of the clips and not both – if it’s going to do it at all – which it shouldn’t? Any ideas? I have other such effects throughout the project where I duped a speed changed clip with an effect applied to it and set it to play on fronts and rears simultaneously and Compressor encoded those correctly.

Well, it's a little late, but this is one of the reasons to have your startup drive cloned so you can restore it to a working state if an update, upgrade or install sends things south.

If this doesn't fix the problem, you could try sending the shot to motion. You could aslo try changing the speed in the motion tab of the viewer.

Email Project to another computer

How do I save and Email a project to another musician who has LE 9 as well. so he can add his part and send it back?

If you don't use any external samples, you can save a project and send just a project file (the one with .logic extension).
In case you record sounds into project, I'd recommend include them into Assets, so that they are saved into Project's folder. After that compress the folder into a zip file and use a file-sharing service like sendspace.com to share it with another musician (it allows to upload files up to 300 Mb in size, which is enough for sharing a music project).

However now I kinda have the opposite problem. In the daytime (when my ipad sound is turned on) I don't get any notification sounds. LOL! So problem is solved but another one has appeared instead. I have a Smart cover if that's at all relevant....

GS70 stelth pro-096 crimson red sound problems

I just bought the new stealth pro-096 crimson red edition with the GT970 from Xoticpc. when I got it I found the sound from the left speaker is driving to the right side. for example if you adjust the balance slider all the way to the left the speaker sound is projected to the right side of the monitor. when you move the slider to the right the sound is projected correctly to the right. I was told this is the way MSI is sending these machines and it is that way on all machines with the gt970 card in it. can anyone confirm this. it is really hard to listen to when watching movies or playing games.

I would generally say that it should NOT act like that and I would contact MSI about it directly.

Can't fully restore my Time Machine/Time Capsule Backup to my newly-wiped SSD/HDD

On receiving my leased, Bootcamp-enabled MacBook Pro, I saw that there were no installation discs for Windows or OSX, and that there were 2 partitions (or so I thought) for Mac and Windows: 375GB each. As I produce music using software in both OSs, I wanted to create a 185GB FAT-32 partition to store my sound samples, projects etc. I attempted to create this partition by resizing (halving) my Bootcamp partition in OSX Disc Utility. The first time I attempted it, resizing was possible, but after the new partition was created, I had problems booting and so had to edit my GPT in order to boot again. Once ‘fixed,’ (by deleting the new partition) I couldn’t resize the Bootcamp partition to fill the 185GB gap, and that 185GB was ‘lost.’ The Bootcamp partition was 375GB but its used space + free space added up to 190GB
So the other day, I tried to follow what I thought was a more logical approach, which I was *sure* would work. My plan was to:
Use Windows Backup (and/or Clonezilla, or Disk Utility) to store an image of my Windows partition.
Uninstall/wipe the Windows partition using BootCamp Assistant, creating 1 big OSX partition
Use BootCamp Assistant to re-partition the HDD for Windows, OSX and ‘shared,’ and then re-install Windows, leaving 175GB for shared music production files
Restore the image/backups (approx 70GB) and carry on as before.
During the process, I deemed that this wasn't possible on my system for a variety of reasons: My laptop already had 4 partitions (Windows Recovery, Bootcamp/Windows, Mac Recovery HD, and Mac) and my understanding is that the MBR of my SSD only supports 4 partitions in its Bootcamp + OSX-compatible state. I have never got this '5 partition' strategy working.
I was unable to restore my Windows partition after re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. As a solution, I then decided to wipe the OSX partition (at that point the only 'visible' partition on the disk) and in-place re-install Mac OS X, with a view to installing Windows after OSX.
Once I wiped my hard drive, however, restoring my files and settings, didn't work as expected. Time Machine backups etc were inaccessible after a normal re-install. Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go. The option to try a full-system restore via Time Machine is greyed-out. Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
I can view files/backups in Time Machine but I can't completely restore my computer to the state it was on 18th May...and 11 days without a fully-functioning laptop is really annoying. I wasn't able to ‘clean’ *or* ‘in-place’ re-install OSX using my existing settings and so I'm frustrated that Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process. Migration Assistant didn’t transfer everything. Can I get things back to the way they were?
Things that haven’t restored correctly:
None of my icon customisations at the top of the screen were there (DropBox, Evernote, Google Drive, Kuvva, the way battery icon was displayed
Safari: Top Sites, History, Plugins
Logic Pro: Downloaded sounds, presets (10+GB), recent items, plugin settings/AU manager
Mail: Settings (and I’m assuming, the downloaded/cached mail: 7GB)
Trash can: Empty
All recent item lists apart from cloud-based services like Evernote, Notes, contacts
iTunes library
Dock view and settings
Settings for most programs
And I'm sure there are more!

That sounds like damaged/corrupted backups. Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

You mean, on the Mac OS X Utilities menu on the Recovery HD? I've never heard of that. That should always be selectable, so you can specify where the backups you want are located. Nothing happens when you click it? Can you click the other options there?

Also sounds like directory or file problems on the backups.
This is just when I go into Time Machine/Star Wars. I can't just go to the latest backup and click "Restore" (which I assume would just restore my whole computer/HDD, although I have no experience in this). I can only select files and restore them individually.

There has never been any such thing.
I bought into the Time Machine 'hype' and thought it was an easy and reliable tool, but was a lot more difficult to do a full restore than I thought.

Correct. Time Machine (like most backup apps) don't back up trash.
All the rest should have been backed-up and restored. Do you see them in the backups? What, if anything, was excluded from being backed-up?
As a non-native Mac user, I'm not sure where all these things are stored...perhaps in Library? I think that not having the full hard-drive just restore annoyed me...I felt that backing up my whole hard drive every hour should've allowed me to restore everything to as it was without a hitch, and when it didn't work I just tried a few things before posting on here.
If repairing the backups finds and fixes things, you might want to try again.

If not, and if you can see the missing items via the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display), you should be able to restore them selectively.

Which imac is best for my daughter? 2.7 or 2.9 ghz

MY daughter is going to study A level moving image at college, before going onto university. My wife and I are computer novices, so would like some advice. We are looking at the 21.5 imac either 2.7 or 2.9ghz, is there much difference between the two in terms of speed.
Also the options we are looking at are 16gb memory and 256gb flash drive (over the 1tb fusion dr). We will be getting preinstalled Final cut pro x and aperture. Will this set up be enough to comfortably run the programs?, or should i get a 8gb memory and 512gb flash drive. The mac would be used for photo and video editing, internet, college work etc.
THe only other difference between the two (2.7 or 2.9ghz models) is the 2.9 comes with a NVIDIA Geforce GT780m with 1GB video memory, which i presume is a graphics card, is this worth having if not into gaming?, would it be useful when running Final cut and video editing?
Any advice would be most grateful, as its quite a financial outlay, and we know next to nothing about imacs or computers

For graphic arts and film editing I’d recommend the 27” iMac with 16GB or 32GB of RAM. The 27” display makes editing much more enjoyable than the smaller display and the RAM can be upgraded at a later date. The 21.5” iMac cannot be upgraded at all. For film and graphic editing 16GB should be plenty now. I don’t recommend less than 16GB. A 256GB SSD should be sufficient for school work, projects, some music etc. I also recommend a 1TB USB 3 hard drive for backing up the computer using TimeMachine.
Further, at some point your daughter will probably begin creating larger projects and her raw footage and extra files won’t fit on the internal drive and/or the rendered project won’t fit. This isn’t likely to happen in the first year (but might). At that point you’ll want to add a 1-3GB ThunderBolt hard drive. ThunderBolt drives send and accept data differently than USB drives which make them better for movie and sound recording projects. USB 3 is perfectly fine for backing up.
The increased speed of the i7 processor and video card are real but really not as important as RAM and hard drive.

In need of some website design feedback (experts please)

Hey guys I've been designing and redesigning my personal website this is the 5th time I've basically done it over and started from scratch, I find it is very difficult to be objective when designing for myself, and I know that there are probably a number of you who have been doing graphic design far longer than I have (about 6 months), and I'd like to get your feedback, anything that is constructive criticism is appreciated. Just as a background my website is to show my music, select graphic design, and sound design projects I have done. "Future Someday" is what I put out electronic music as, and is somewhat of the largest section (a bit how Tycho designs as iso50, but both are equally important to his "brand"). So my site is futuresomeday.com . I'm designing in muse, here are some sites that look quite good from my perspective and I would like to create something comparable, though I don't need to have their exactl layout/ design style: bleed.com , Alex Goose , Kurppa Hosk , The Designers Republic™ , and Form: Design-led furniture, lighting and accessories for contract environments. . Can't Reconnect to non Apple Drives

Hi,
Sorry, but I figured that this issues would have been discussed many times over, but couldn't find it when searching.
In the original XSan Days, Spotlight couldn't index the XFS Formatted XSan drives (because XFS doesn't support the Resource Fork of Apple Files), which in turn made it so FCP couldn't reconnect correctly.
I also ran into this issue 6 months ago on a Untiy System, after moving a lot of Audio, Video and Graphic Files from an HFS Formatted volume to the Unity (not exactly sure the file format they use, but definitely not HFS).
Now the place I am working at is considering an EditShare System and like all the other NAS Based systems, it uses XFS Formatted Drives. Has there been an update to the XFS Format, so it now supports the Resource Fork of Apple Files? Or has there been an update to Spotlight, so it can somehow Index XFS Volumes?
My understanding is that, FCP 7 still uses the Spotlight index to Reconnect Files and if XFS still doesn't support Resource Forks and Spotlight still can't Index XFS volumes, then how can the EditShare people claim that FCP 7 Reconnects work correctly on their system?
Am I totally out of date with my info? Is there a work around that they have implemented, like a hidden program that builds an Index that FCP can read (Like XSan in the old Days)?
Any help Would be Greatly appreciated.

Hi Michael,
Yes if we used the "Locate" function and manually found the file it would connect, but manually finding and reconnecting the number of files in most projects is a daunting task.
To compound the problem, most of our Editors maintained a "Sounds Effects Project", which contained all of the Sounds effect Files that they like to use a lot, some of these projects had a 1000 files in them, Manually reconnecting that many files is a complete nightmare.
From this experience, it seems like Spotlight can't Index non-HFS Formatted drives, whether they are Network drives or not, because (correct me if I'm wrong), even XSan had the same issue when connected via Fiber Channel.
When I was setting up 1st generation XSan Systems, I ran into this issue and the way it was explained to me back then was, XFS Formatted drives don't support the Resource Fork, so when Spotlight tries to Index the drive, it can't, because it uses the Metadata in the Resource Fork to build its index.
Sorry, maybe a long winded answer to your question.
