Sound input behaving strangely.

First of all, here's what I have:
PowerMac G4 mirrored drive doors with OS 10.4.3
An 8-year-old microphone from a beige G3.
The problem: The sound input doesn't seem to work. I tested the microphone on an older blue & white G3 and it was fine. On this computer, no voice registers. The sound input volume is turned to maximum.
This is the first time I've ever tried to use this microphone with this computer. I've never found it necessary before.
In the microphone calibration section of the system preferences, it is clearly registering ambient noise from the room, as the blue bars to light continuously. When I speak into the microphone, nothing happens.
Microphone calibration is not recognizing any commands.
I'm sure the Mic is plugged into the correct place. (circle with two arrows pointing at each other.) And my microphone is set to "line in" in the preferences, which is the only option available.
Is my mic simply too old for this computer? What can I do? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Ian

You need a mic preamp for use with the MDD (self-powered mic). Some users use the iMic (USB audio interface.) You can see this unit at the Apple Store.

  • PLEASE can a AE from NI take a look at my problem. Sound input read behave in strange manner then the buffer size is larger than 2X number of samples to read.

On my computer I have discovered some strange behavior then reading data from the sound card. Then the buffer size is 2x samples to read everything is as expected. But since I read the sound card 10 times pr second I feel a .2 second buffer is to small. I am using XP, and XP is not a RTOS so with a buffer set to 0.2 seconds I may lose data. Therefore I set the buffer size (number samples/ch on Sound Input Configure.vi) to be in range of 2 seconds. The result then is that then reading from Sound input.vi, a reading often take more than 0.1 second. On my computer it is often 500mSec. Then the next 5 read follows with almost zero interval. I do not loose data. But on my front panel the graphs looks like an very early silent movie. This error was introduced in Labview 8.x. To be honest I think the labview 7.x sound system was much better in many ways.
But before I point any finger NI. Other people has to verify the behavior I experience. I have made an example showing this error. It is a modified version  of the "Continuous Sound Input.vi" example. Then the "buffer in seconds" control is set to 0.2 every thing works OK. Changer this to a larger number will produce the mentioned above hiccup. The larger number in this control the larger hiccup. Is it any way to fix this? My solution up to now has to use a free 3. part software(http://www.zeitnitz.de/Christian/index.php?sel=waveio) But I guess it soon will be outdated. It may not work with newer windows versions.
Any help at all will be appreciated
And yes I have the most updated version fo DirectX. Also I se this in Labview 2009 which I have trail version of. The VI I have made is in 8.6

If you take a moving average of the 0.2s buffer vs. 3s buffer at an update rate of 10, then they are the same (just under 100ms), so the average refresh rate is the same. I agree that is odd behaviour that the time between sound reads go to zero quite a lot then take a long time once in a while (presumably to fill the buffer
I guess it goes to zero because it is reading data from the buffer it do not has to wait for data from the sound card. The mysterious thing is the periodic delay. You are also correct then saying that average timing is correct. And in my application I have no data loss.
If you search for sound in this forum you will find out that many people has reported trouble with the sound system.

  • Has anyone ever encountered layer blend modes behaving strangely?

I use photoshop quite a bit for retouching and photo compositing. Tonight I encountered a strange problem. I was trying to create a vintage look on a photo and had a number of adjustment layers including a curves, levels, color fill and there were also a few texture/noise layers all set to varying opacities. Near the top of all this I had a vignette layer that was black around the edges and white in the center set to blend mode of multiply. Well, when I was clicking on and off I realize that that vignette layer was definitely lightening the center part of the overall image quite a bit (the part that is white on the vignette layer), almost like a screen. So I flipped the vignette layer through different opacity modes and saw that there was no change in its behavior, every mode was screening the white, even darker color and multiply. I thought maybe it was interacting in a weird way with one of the other layers so I turned all the others off except the back ground-- still no change. Then I dropped the layer down one at time until it was below the background. When I started to move it up again, it was behaving normally for a moment until I moved it up a couple levels in the stacking order and then it went back to the screen behavior. Anyway I shuffled it around a bit but there was no consitency to when it would display the correct opacity and when it wouldn't, so it did not seem to be an interaction with any specific layer. I don't know, but I can't really think of any case where white set to multiply should produce a lighter result even if it were interacting with another opacity. In any case it does seem to me that there is something going on with the overall computation of opacities. I tried creating a new black and white layer and it was also doing the same thing, behaving strange and not displaying the correct opacity.
I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. I'm going to shut off the computer and hope this goes away when I reboot, but if it does not, does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm not a regular visitor to this forum, but I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else has experienced anything like this. I've only got 5 gigs of ram on this computer and I've been working away for a while... maybe photoshop just couldn't keep up(?) I'm using Photoshop CS5, RGB Adobe 1998 colorspace.  I've never had anything like this happen in the last 11 years I've been using photoshop. Hmmm.... hope I don't have to reinstall or call support or worse. fingers crossed.

Nevermind. It is still having the problem. I have to think that this file is just corrupt somehow because I just opened another file and can't seem to cause the same problem. Basically, I can fill a layer with white, put it to a blend mode of multiply or darker color and it will block out everything of the image below, ie totally opaque. The opaqueness varies depending on the if there are other layers also on blend modes, but it does not seem to correspond to normal blend mode interaction. If I put it right on top of a regular layer with an image on it, it totally blocks it out on a blend mode of multiply... weird. I am going to scrap this file and see if the problem recurs in other files. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting some years on it and has been running pretty slow. I'm not a hardware expert but I've done everything I know how to do to maintain it. Was thinking of upping the ram to see if I can hold out a bit longer before I upgrade the computer. Wouldn't surprise me if this problem is related to the computer.

  • Metronome behaving strangely

When I press the record button in GB 3.0.4 The level meter displays a pulsing level, but I hear no sound for the metronome until I depress a key on my MIDI keyboard. This remains true whether I have it set to "Count In" or not. Another curious problem is that if I set the metronome to play during both Playback and Recording, I don't hear it during playback, until it reaches a region. For example, if I start playing from m. 1 but no instruments enter until m. 2, I don't hear the click start until after the instruments enter.
Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas what might be causing it?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Hangtime, thanks for your help, but the issue isn't the volume of the metronome. Normal GB functionality is that if you have Metronome selected to be "on," then when you click on the Record button you immediately hear the metronome, as well as see the click registering on the meter. I don't hear it, even though it is registering on the meter, until I depress a key on my MIDI keyboard. Then I hear it just fine. I've been working with this software since version 1 came out, and I've never had this problem before. I also have Sibelius, Logic, and Reason, so I am wondering if I may have unknowingly tweaked some setting that is making MIDI in GB behave strangely.

  • Sometimes it behaves strangely

In the last few days, my shuffle started behaving strangely. I bought two albums from iTMS, Madonna and System Of A Down.
They both play well on my powerbook, but on shuffle not so well (and since I paid, "not so well" is not good).
Pausing a song, does not pause, but simply stops; when I press play, it skips to the next song, either in shuffle mode or in play mode.
And, most important of all, one song (Madonna, Get Together), locks the iPod: it plays well, but at the end (I suppose when it updates play count) I hear a click, like a static electric wave, green light is on and the only thing I can do is turn off (another click) and wait for few seconds.
Yesterday I reset my shuffle, re-installed last version software, but nothing happened.
Has anyone had a similar behaviour?

It actually sounds like the problem is with those particular files, not with the shuffle (if other purchased songs work fine on the shuffle. You can contact the iTMS customer service and tell them about the problem. They may offer you a refund or let you download new fixed verions of theose songs.
You can contact them through the form at the bottom of this page:

  • Sound input issue

Last week I answered a Skype call to find the person on the other end couldn't hear me. I checked all my preferences, and realised that there was no input registering for the Line In (external mic) in the Sound System Pref.
Thinking it might be the external mic, I tried the internal one. I still have the bars registering noise, but nothing in Skype.
Wondering if it was a Skype issue, I tried Quicktime. Trying to record audio through QT Pro gets nothing with either internal or external mic.
But the strange thing is iMovie and Windows Movie Maker (through Parallels) record just fine from the internal (but not external) mic.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. It's driving me nuts!

What you think is a mic input on the mac is actually a line level input - so you can't just plug a mic in - it's the more pro approach to sound input.
So you need a line level input. I'm not very familiar with what's out there, but essentially it'll be the equivalent of a preamp.
You can also bypass the line in input entirely by getting a usb input - for example I use an Andrea sound pod for a speech recognition microphone.
    Hope that helps
    Best of luck.

  • Edirol UA-25EX Sound Input not working after 10.6.6 upgrade

    Hello,
I am using an Edirol UA-25EX sound card for sound input (mike) and output.
Since I upgraded to 10.6.6, sound input is not working anymore.
I tried to unplug / replug. I tried to reboot. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Edirol's driver for Snow Leopard.
    Nothing worked. Any help ?
    Thanks

By switching the sampling rate at the rear of the device, unplugging and replugging it, I manage to make it work again

  • System Preferences Sound Input is stuck at Soundflower (64ch). I can't change it!

So, I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite (latest version). (250GB HDD, 4GB RAM, 2.4 GHz)
I wanted to record some commentary for my video and to use the mic I went into System Preferences > Sound > Sound Input.
With my mic connected, I tried all of the 4 options (picture below), but then after closing and opening System Preferences again, the sound input is stuck on "Soundflower 64ch).
When I try to change it (e.g. Built-In), it "crashes", but not really: It selects the option I clicked for a second or two, then the list disappears and says "No Input Devices" briefly, then the list reappears with "Soundflower 64ch" selected.
Please help, I've tried some solutions I found online, like restarting the laptop, repairing disk permissions, even a code for Terminal.
    Thanks to anybody in advance.
UPDATE: ****, I think my Mac is possessed or something. It shows the ring of death when my mouse is on the System Preferences window, and when I try to take a screenshot of the list itself, it lags and doesn't let me take it until "No input devices found" appears.

Either remove "Soundflower" or refer to its developer for support.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds

    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Bootcamp 3.1 & Windows 7 x64 - no external sound input, low speakers level

    Hi all,
I just installed long awaited Bootcamp 3.1 update. I am rather disappointed.
The only thing that has changed is that the red light on the audio output is off. This thing actually bothered me the least.
External sound input line does not seem to work at all. No matter if mike or standard line device is connected. System recognizes that something is connected but there is no sound coming, level indicator does not rise.
Speakers level is still low. As far as I know all it takes to fix it is to alter some settings in the *.ini file. Someone did it and posted for other to download but why it is sho hard for Cirrus and Apple? What is the matter?
Is there any way to get sound output via Mini Port under Windows 7?
System does not even see such device.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

What about the iMac though? 2008 Model w/ Realtek to be specific. The audio is low and poor and I haven't even tried the audio out. I'm running Win7 x64 and everything works well aside from my audio and my external WD Studio FW800 drive disconnecting randomly with repeated directory changes. I can avoid that on my system... but the audio is a real disappointment. Makes me feel like I need an external FW sound card.

My XP machine crashed, I reinstalled Premiere Pro 2.0 with Windows 7, and I got the following error: 'The Currently installed soundcard driver does not support Direct Sound Input. Thanks! Though I upgraded to solve the problem, this is good to know.

VERY VERY VERY EASY (now, when I solved the problem, not before...!!!)
Insert Micropone or any jack in Micropone Input or Aux Input, on your sound card or motherboard !
AND NOW YOU CAN USE PREMIERE PRO 2.0
    Enjoy

  • 50L7300UC - sound input from Mac not outputting to ARC

I'm having an odd problem with audio on my 50L7300UC (Canadian model of the 50L7300U). I have a soundbar hooked up via HDMI ARC, and it works fine for audio from my cable PVR, from online sevices such as Netflix accessed through the TV itself, and from my PC (a Windows 8 tablet connected via a mini-Displayport to HDMI cable, which provides both audio and video). But with my wife's Macbook Air, using the same mini-Displayport to HDMI cable, video is fine but the sound won't output to the soundbar. Oddly, the sound does work if played through the TV speakers, but if I switch sound output to the soundbar (which the TV sees as "Amplifier"), nothing comes out. I've tried different settings on the Macbook's audio output (using the Midi Audio utility), but that doesn't seem to matter. Any ideas?

Hmm, if it doesn't see the internal microphone when connected via the FW cable, maybe you might have to run audio cables from the camcorder line output to the sound input on the Mac.

  • G4 and microphone suitable for sound input port

I'm looking into getting started with podcasting and I need help with selecting a microphone. I'm on a G4 desktop machine with a sound input port, any suggestions as to the tech spec or manufacturer of a suitable microphone would be most appreciated.

    Hi, Neil -
This Apple KBase article provides some info with regard to microphone selection -

Scroll down the article to the G4 section that matches your G4 model.
Many users have gone to using the Griffin iMaic adapter, since it permits a wide variety of micophones to be used. There's a link near the bottom of the above article to Griffin's iMic page.

  • Sound Input and Output Disappeared

I am considering a purchase of a used Macbook Pro (4,1) from early 2008 with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed. When I first tried the machine, the sound input and output were absent. After removing preference files, resetting NVRAM, etc., I finally got them to work. They worked for a few weeks, but recently they disappeared again. This time, my efforts to ressurrect them have been fruitless.
Here is what I have done in an attempt to remedy the situation:
    •Delete com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
•Jiggle a digital headphone jack in the headphone port
    •Verifiy Disk and Repair Permissions
    •Reset NVRAM
    •Reset SMC
I have read online that some people have replaced the AppleHDA.kext file with the one from 10.6.7 - however, every effort I have made to find this file has resulted in failure. I am not able to locate MacOSXupdCombo 10.6.7.pkg anywhere on the web
Any recommendations? I was able to fix this once before - why not now? Thanks for any and all constructive input...

Did you recieve the install disk(s) when you purchase the machine? I would try doing a back up of your data then a fresh install of the OS. Insert the disk into the mac then click restart and hold the c key, ten follow the prompts.
If you wish to take this route, I would try the 10.6.8 combo update first (it should be fine to run it again), then if you wish you may try the 10.6.7 update. Altough I would just do a OS X reinstall and then run software update till you bring it up to date. On disk 2 there should be the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) that you can run by booting the disk holding the D key to check for a hardware fault.
You may also make a Genius bar appointment for a free evaluation, they have more extensive diagnosis tools and would then tell you what your otions would be. (hey it's free)

  • Why is my MacBook display behaving strangely?

I am using an alumin(i)um MacBook (13", late 2008 model with multi-function glass trackpad). In the past couple of weeks, the display has started to behave strangely. The screen seems to freeze (meaning any mouse movements or keystrokes do not display), and then the screen begins to fade to grey. It seems to be resolved by tilting the display until the MacBook "wakes". There has also been some occasional flickering of the display, although far less frequent. Could someone help me with this? Is it something like a loose connection, and, if so, how should I deal with it? (The MacBook is now out of warranty, so my next step would be my local Apple store). Thanks in advance!

Same thing happening to me - began about four weeks ago, two weeks after warranty expired. Has gotten to the point where it's difficult to use the computer - don't get through composing an e-mail before it starts to fade - now know that even though computer display is frozen, the keystrokes are still getting through, so be careful what keys you press trying to get it to pay attention!
I believe it's going to turn out to be a connection problem between the computer and the display in the hinge area. I found out yesterday that as it freezes, and I start to pick it up off my lap and put it aside, if I pick it up with my left hand near the lower left of the keyboard and my right hand behind the display, down low near then hinge, and pulling slightly towards me, this fixes it (for a while), and this is (for me) the most reliable way to wake it back up. I've seen references elsewhere to this being a simple problem where a connection is maintained with a black foam pad to provide pressure to the connection. I think the foam must degrade or lose resiliency (apparently at 12.5 months from purchase!) and there may be a simple solution available. When I figure it out for this particular model, I'll post my conclusions.
