Sound Input Problems Using iChat..Inadvertent Loss of Microphone?

My father-in-law just bought a new 17 inch iMac with an Intel dual core, whole ten yards. Great machine. However, when using iChat with his family he's noticed the the sound input goes dead and then he's constantly searching around with on screen controls to get it back again. I thought it might have something to do with his mighty mouse being that you can sync applications with it. I've walked him through the system preferences to get the sound back, but its seems to be a niggling weird type of issue. Any suggestions?

Hi Phillip,
Selelcting mute is normally a mouse and click item or from the Video menu of iChat (It does not seem to have a keyboard short cut).
The Mighty Mouse does seem to be the bset place to look.

  • Sound input problem

I have a weird problem: in using a headset to make calls using Skype or iChat I cannot get the headset microphone to work, though the earphones work fine. Everything is plugged in correctly. Have selected the Line-In option in the Sound panel of System Preferences, but the Input Level indicator shows no sign of life. Have selected the same option in Skype. Have also tried a 2nd headset, with the same result. For reference the built-in microphone works fine.
We have 2 iMacs here displaying the same symptoms; what's happening? The headset worked just fine prior to upgrading to OS 10.6.6; is there a link here?

Having banged head against wall for too long I finally took my computer to Apple, where it was determined that there’s nothing wrong with the microphone port; however, the Radioshack headset does NOT work with the sound input device set to Line-in; input device MUST be set to internal microphone, after which the headset microphone AND the internal microphone will BOTH pick up sound simultaneously. Go figure.
May have something to do with the audio-in port requiring an externally powered microphone as per users manual. From MacWorld: If you have experience with multimedia headsets and the Mac, you know that Apple equips Macs with a line-level audio-input jack—one that doesn’t work with microphone-level audio sources without amplification.

  • 975x Sound Input problems

I recently build a new computer using the MSI 975x mobo.  The only problem is, I seem to have some issues reguarding sound input.
All the sound features seem to be working except for sound input.  In Sounds and Audio Devices, I have full access to sound output and all the different volume controls and advanced features.  All is well here.  But when I change it to sound input I run into my problem.  In the Master Volume Control on Input all volume controls except Master are greyed out to me and can not be changed.
In properties, the advanced button for input (where you can find the useful feature of mic boost) is also greyed out.
I am running the bios off the CD and the latest sound drivers.  Is this a known issue and does it have a fix?

  • Mobileme family account - problems using Ichat

    Hi all!
I have problems with my mobileme family account - using Ichat.
I´m the master account ( e.g. named A ), my wife ( e.g. named B ) has one of the other free 4 family accounts.
At office I have an Imac with Ichat logged in under name "A" and my wife at home has a MBP with Ichat logged in as name "B".
When I´m at the office I´m not able to see if my wife is online or not - even I cannot make a video call to her because "her contact" is offline.
Sometimes a message pops up : AIM is telling me that I´m ( name "A" ) online on two different locations at the same time !?
Do I make something wrong or is it really not possible with a mobileme family account to use Ichat for all family accounts ?
EDIT: I just recognized that at my wife´s MBP she is logged in with her email address. When I click on that email address I see "Pseudonym/ID" - and if I change that to "name" ... my name appears instead of hers - very strange
Thank you for your help and sorry for my strange English

    Hi,
The answer to this is that the regular posters only get here at certain times of day.
I am here about 4 hours of so most evenings (about 17 hours after you first posted).
Defcom does sometimes get here early afternoon his time (Same as mine).
We were not ignoring you, we just weren't here.
As Defcom has said it is about whether the accounts/Email IDs are Aliases or not.

  • Yosemite Sound Input Only Uses Internal Mic

After updating to Yosemite I cannot record with an internal audio option, like soundflower.  Before Yosemite, it worked fine to change sound input from internal mic to soundflower, but now, no matter what selection is made, it records from the mic.

Try re-installing sound flower. I had an issue where it would keep crashing when I tried to change the output. It worked after I re-installed it again.

  • Sound input problem with Skype earbud

Just trying out Skype, and using a wired earbud I got free. The earbud is Skype branded, and has 2 minijacks - one is headphone and one is microphone.
When it's plugged in, if I go into Sound preferences there is no input if I choose Line In (rather than built in microphone). I have made sure the input level is turned up.
Any ideas? I will check if the earbud works with any other devices, as I suspect they're quite cheaply produced!
Update: just checked another headset that's the same and it doesn't work either. Neither work with our iMac. It's interesting that they seem to be incompatible.

Did you get this problem resolved?
I am having the same problem: unable to input sound....

  • Sound Input problem (external microphone)

Hi.  My external mike (Samson C01U, USB connection) isn't working; there's no input sound coming through.
I'm certain it's not a hardware problem with the mike.
On preferences > sound, there's no sign of any input (with input volume level turned right up).  Trying to record on Camtasia / Audacity / Quicktime also isn't giving any input.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you so much
    Daniel

Did you try to reboot? Smc reset?

  • Sound input problems - No sound

My wife and I bought two Macbooks last week and we installed Skype. We tried it for the first time today, she could hear me but I couldn't hear her. The Skype audio settings were fine, as were the sound settings under System Preferences.
However, although internal microphone was selected as the input device, the input level bar doesn't move at all, therefore isn't picking up any sound.
Any ideas? Is it likely to be a hardware fault that means returning the Macbook?

The input level bar you're referring to, is it the one in Sound in System Preferences? If it's not picking up there, you probably won't get it to pick up in any other OSX program.
It's possible that your sound preferences are corrupt. Try deleting this file & emptying the trash.
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist (Create a backup if you wish.)
Unfortunately the sound settings resides in a file that controls many other settings like energy management, so you'll have to reconfigure some things when you're done.

  • I am not getting any sound input on my microphone. There is no microphone input on my new macbook pro, so I am using my old one. Is this a problem with the new operating system? Did they simply remove any microphone software?

Check System Preferences > Sound > Output
Make sure the correct device is selected.

  • ISight sound system prefs; using w/o using iChat

There's a website I need to record myself speaking for for a class, and I'd like to be able to do so without having iChat open. However, it was only working when iChat was open. and my status was available. Is there something I need to change?
Also, in System Preferences, I only saw Internal Microphone listed under Sound, not iSight. What might be the problem?
    Thanks!

    Hello Christopher
First, your System Preferences issue. Your iSight must be plugged in before it can show in System Preferences... > Sound > Input. If your iSight does not show when it is plugged in and turned on, restart and see if the problem goes away. If not, unplug and reconnect your iSight and check to see whether the problem goes away. If your problem persists, you can test your iSight using these suggestions. Pay particular attention to the possibilities of faulty cables, connections, or ports.
I may not understand your question about recording yourself speaking via iChat. Do you mean that you must have iChat launched but not running in order to use iMovie or QuickTime Pro to capture movie clip of yourself? If so, have you tried restarting? If restart does not resolve the problem, and if you have not recently performed your regular Mac OS X Maintenance, do so now and see if that helps.
You might also consider trying other applications that can make video or movie clips with your iSight. Perhaps one of them will work for you.
If you are trying to use a video website for the recording, see the Help, FAQs, Support pages, or seek help from the web-master of that site. Many video web-sites have unique requirements, and they should be best able to answer your compatibility, configuration, and operating questions concerning their particular operations. You may only need to configure your Flash Player settings for what you want to do. This response to streetartist711 may help you get started:

VERY VERY VERY EASY (now, when I solved the problem, not before...!!!)
Insert Micropone or any jack in Micropone Input or Aux Input, on your sound card or motherboard !
AND NOW YOU CAN USE PREMIERE PRO 2.0
    Enjoy

  • Clipping problems using SPDIF input on SB Live

.Clipping problems using SPDIF input on SB Li've?Hello everyone
I'm new to this community and I'm banking on someone being able to help me!
I'm connecting a DAT player to the SPDIF input on my Soundblaster Li've card and recording using Audacity.
Within Creative Audio HQ I've got the SPDIF volume level set to 00% (for starters, perhaps someone can explain why there is a volume control when I thought this signal was staying in the digital realm?!) and when I record in Audacity the resulting material clips with high transient sound... a piano, for example, distorts on the louder notes.
I need to take the level down to about 70% (or the equivalent in Audacity would be 0.7 - the 2 'volume' controls are connected) to avoid any clipping.
I've had the sound card years and used to use SoundForge without any problems. Any ideas why this is happening in Audacity?
I'm using XP and?I have downloaded the latest drivers and turned off the MOBO onboard sound in my BIOS.
I would be grateful for any assistance anyone can give.
    Best Wishes
    Steve

Hi, I am trying to sample my old vinyl record collection using my Sound Blaster Li've! PCI (think that was the model - it was the original (not Value) version of the card with the seperate header for the coaxial digital and MIDI I/O). Unfortunately, I get severe clipping regardless of the recording volume on the Volume Control panel. I know that my photo pre-amp is capable of high voltage outputs and therefore wondered if anyone was aware of the sensitivity of the analogue line input in volts of this particular model? Many thanks.
    Regards, Paul.
If your pre-amp is a phono pre-amp (with RIAA in-build), I suppose it's not the culprit for clipping.
How have you set the recording and source (input) levels on Volume Control and Recording Control?
Try adjust the recording level by the 'hights' (loudest outputs) of the record (you know those recordings so you can easily find those places (or you can look on vinyls surface where the darkest areas are --> loudest outputs)).

  • PLEASE can a AE from NI take a look at my problem. Sound input read behave in strange manner then the buffer size is larger than 2X number of samples to read.

On my computer I have discovered some strange behavior then reading data from the sound card. Then the buffer size is 2x samples to read everything is as expected. But since I read the sound card 10 times pr second I feel a .2 second buffer is to small. I am using XP, and XP is not a RTOS so with a buffer set to 0.2 seconds I may lose data. Therefore I set the buffer size (number samples/ch on Sound Input Configure.vi) to be in range of 2 seconds. The result then is that then reading from Sound input.vi, a reading often take more than 0.1 second. On my computer it is often 500mSec. Then the next 5 read follows with almost zero interval. I do not loose data. But on my front panel the graphs looks like an very early silent movie. This error was introduced in Labview 8.x. To be honest I think the labview 7.x sound system was much better in many ways.
But before I point any finger NI. Other people has to verify the behavior I experience. I have made an example showing this error. It is a modified version  of the "Continuous Sound Input.vi" example. Then the "buffer in seconds" control is set to 0.2 every thing works OK. Changer this to a larger number will produce the mentioned above hiccup. The larger number in this control the larger hiccup. Is it any way to fix this? My solution up to now has to use a free 3. part software(http://www.zeitnitz.de/Christian/index.php?sel=waveio) But I guess it soon will be outdated. It may not work with newer windows versions.
Any help at all will be appreciated
And yes I have the most updated version fo DirectX. Also I se this in Labview 2009 which I have trail version of. The VI I have made is in 8.6

If you take a moving average of the 0.2s buffer vs. 3s buffer at an update rate of 10, then they are the same (just under 100ms), so the average refresh rate is the same. I agree that is odd behaviour that the time between sound reads go to zero quite a lot then take a long time once in a while (presumably to fill the buffer
I guess it goes to zero because it is reading data from the buffer it do not has to wait for data from the sound card. The mysterious thing is the periodic delay. You are also correct then saying that average timing is correct. And in my application I have no data loss.
If you search for sound in this forum you will find out that many people has reported trouble with the sound system.

  • Odd screeching sounds when using iChat Theater

Whenever I'm sending files over iChat theater there's a prolonged screeching sound much like the one you hear in the soundtrack of the film Psycho. One guess of mine was the volume of the speakers, but then, even when that's low, file sharing still emits those strange sounds. Any ideas what may cause them?
Mine is a PowerBook G4 running Leopard with a DSL connection. The other end uses a brand new Intel iMac.

On Laptops go to System Preferences > Sound > Input tab and adjust the Volume downwards.
If this does not work go to Hard Drive/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and reboot the Mac.
NOTE: This is the Library that shows up when you open the Hard Drive (NOT the one in your Home Folder OR the one inside System)
