Sound is muted and locked on my Mackbook Air

My Macbook Air is four months old and the sound is now muted and locked.
After reading all the forums, I've reset the PRAM (although I have since learned this won't affect it) and also the SMC power management with no success. I have reset, turned the power on and off and have also plugged an unplugged headphones into the jack.
I believe it muted itself after I started watching a VEVO video on a film makers website.
I'm currently travelling and don't have time to leave it at a Mac Store for it to be repaired.
Does anyone have any potential solutions?
Much appreciated,
James

Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

Hello group! This is driving me bonkers! LOL. I have no clue how the sound became muted to begin with. Even worse is that I cannot find a way to get it back! I have all of the sound settings set to 100 perce, but the sound icon shows a / (slash) through it and can find no way to clear i. PLEASE, any help would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance...

I have done both and still I am stuck in mute. In the past I have been able to "reset" by holding the volume button in the foment position, but not this time.

  • My sound is muted, and it's still blaring sound

As the title suggests, my Windows HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (I think, I'm just going on the label under my keyboard really. No idea with computer models to be honest) is having an issue where I'll plug in headphones and it'll put sound through the headphones, but still throw out sound through the speakers, something that is very annoying in a household with other people in it. And, when I try to change from the speakers to the headphones, which are working perfectly fine too, it doesn't give that option at all. And, when I have my sound muted, sound still plays on half the time. THen, there's a problem were I need to restart my computer if I close the lid for it to work.
Is this computer just so old that I need a new one already? Is it a bug? Is it something that can be easily fixed? How should I go about this problem?

  • Satellite A300-129 - Sound is muted and icon does not respond

    Dear all,
I am trying to switch on the sound of my Satellite A300-129 after I had muted it a couple of days ago, but the icon does not respond.
When I click on the right mouse button, I can go to sounds etc., but "Open volume mixer" does not respond either. I have also tried to restart the laptop a couple of times, but that did not help.
What can I do? Your help will be much appreciated.
    Heleen

    >How do I do that safely without risking losing sound forever?
LOL You will not lose anything for ever. :D in worst case you will have to reinstall the OS using the Toshiba recovery disk.
Access the device manager -> mark the sound card -> use delete button -> reboot the notebook
After new reboot the sound driver should reinstall again and should detect the sound card.

  • Sound keeps muted, iTunes doesn't play songs

Sinds a week or two sometimes when I boot my mac my sound doesn't work. My sound keeps muted and I can't turn the volume up because it's unclickable grey.
Someone told me to do the "cmd + ctrl + n + v"-trick and that sometimes helps me but the problem keeps coming back. Also iTunes doesn't want to play my songs, it keeps stuck on 0:00.
In my sound-systempreferences everything seems okay.
    My specs are:
    -  iMac mid 2012 running OSX lion 10.7.4
    -  Processor  3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    -  Memory 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    -  Video AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

the same thing is happening to me as well since I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes. My sound beeps now in everything, from email notifications, to music. But iTunes won't play any songs that I select. Hope to get some feedback.

  • I CAN'T DOWNLOAD imovie for my mackbook air

hi,i can't download imovie and iphoto for my mackbook air? that tell me need mac os x v10.7.5 of up. but i can't updates my system right now.

Well, usually snow leopard comes with the 'bundled software' disk; maybe someone gave yan the machine w/o the disk(s) – or flash drive <-------------- on that point i'm not sure because my first MBA was just this past August and there is no more flash drive installer that comes with the MBA (if there ever was one). So I was thinking, for some strange reason, he was at least running an earlier version of Lion and could not update his machine for whatever reason. So he would have to upgrade to Mountain Lion, or wait for Mavericks (if his machine can upgrade to that)

  • My sound keep on muting and everytime i change i go to the system preference its not changing...

need help the sound of my mac air keep on automatically muting and when i go to system preference to change it ( i cant go it as if its freeze)

Perhaps, it is because you did not click the "lock" button the last time you changed something in System Preferences. If I am not wrong, before OS X version 10.6.6, the operating system would just remember if you locked the System Preferences. However, in my opinion, you should bring your MacBook to your Apple Store and get this problem solved.

  • Where in settings/sounds do I find apple timer sound and lock sound?

After a reset to try and get mains charging back (it didn't work) The Apple alarm has changed its sound and I want to revert to my previous sound but I cannot finf anything that alters this in Settings/Sounds. Also I would linker a stronger sound when I plug into a mains charge ( when I eventually get it back) I can't find that in Settings/Sounds either. Any advice?
    Thanks.

I do not know what you mean by the Apple Alarm. If you are talking about the clock app where you can set an alarm, you have to option to set whatever sound you want when you set or edit the alarm setting. If you have an existing alarm, tap the Eidt button in the upper left corner, tap the arrow to the right of the alarm and the Sound setting is the 3rd setting in the list.
If you are not hearing the plug in sound, system sounds have been muted, or so it would seem. You cannot change that sound. You can make it louder in the settings in Sounds>Ringers and alerts. Use the volume slider there and as long as you don't have it set to use the volume button, then whatever you adjust the volume level to in that setting, will be the volume setting for the charging ding.
If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

I have the iPhone 4. and when I updated the software to iOS6 My notifications don't make a sound anymore, the only sound that I get are text messages, or Email. I checked to see if the other apps were muted and they weren't. How do I fix this

You cannot update iPhone 4 to IOS 8.1.2, the highest you can update is IOS 7.1.2.
Unless you've iPhone 4S (looks similar to iPhone 4)

  • After updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.0.6 my iPhone won't play sound. When I pull up on the screen where it shows volume bar, brightness bar, etc. The volume bar does not show up. Even muting and unmuting it didn't work. I reset my settings and nothing

  • No sound not muted please help and thanks

My iPad was working great the first part of the day yesterday and then later that night I went to listen to some music and there was no sound. I plugged in my headphones and nothing. I checked to see if it was muted and it wasn't I also checked the switch above the volume and it wasn't muted either. Is my iPad broken? Please help and thank you in advance.

Do you have sound through the built in the speaker?
You could try resetting the iPad and see if the sound comes back. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
You can also try reinserting the headphones and removing them a couple of times and see if the sound comes back on.
The side switch will mute system sounds if it is set to do so. Music will still play even if you mute system sounds.

  • My key sounds and lock sounds no longer working, have tried everything!! Please help?

I have only had my iphone 4s for two months. The key sounds and lock sounds not working, happened after plugging it in for charging. It's all switched on in settings. Now it only vibrates when a message comes, or new mail etc, even though I have tones set it doesn't play them. I have done a full restore and hasn't worked either. I have also noticed the amount of power has disspeared (number) now too. What should I do? Thank you!

Thanks, power icon all sorted. But I still can't get the sounds back. I tried that reset at the beginning and it hasn't worked. Tried it again, still the same. What should I try next? Remember I've already tried a system restore. Nothing is working! Don't know what to do next?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
You could try resetting the PRAM and see if that helps.

    Hi nitramred,
To start troubleshooting this issue where you are unable to adjust the volume after receiving a call, please go ahead and first force close all of the apps currently running on the device, and then reset it by following the steps in the articles below.
iOS: Force an app to close
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    Take care,
    Alex H.
