Sound issue on iphone 4 - 7.1.1

My mom has an iphone 4 that was handed down to her from my sister.  After one of the ios updates...can't remember which one...the phone stopped giving audible notifications for text messages.  As I have tried to troubleshoot this issue I have discovered the other following problems:
The phone will not play music on any speaker.  I was trying to connect the phone via bluetooth to a speaker bar and when I tried to play pandora, I got nothing.  I then disconnected the bluetooth to see if I would get sound out of the phone's speaker and got nothing.  I attempted to play a downloaded song and got nothing.
I then tried to see if I could find other issues and I did.  When I go into settings>sounds>ringtones I can switch ringtones and hear the ringtone sample.  When I go into settings>sounds>text tone, I can select any tone in the list and all I get is a vibration, no sound at all from any of them.
I also found that when pressing the volume up and down buttons on the side of the phone do not produce the pop up box that shows volume going up and down
I believe these three problems to be related as some kind of systematic software bug.  Can anyone confirm this or offer a possible solution. Keep in mind the phone does make sounds when someone calls also from the speaker phone.  The only non-sound issues are text notifications and playing music.  I find this to be a rather important problem because the phone can really no longer be used as a phone since my mom continually misses text messages because she does not get an audible notification.

Hello hiknmt06,
You may need to restart or reset the device.

  • Sound issues on iPhone 4

Today out of the blue my sound on my iphone 4 has decided to stop working. I have not uploaded anything new, dropped my phone or changed anything, very strange. The only time sound works is if I have set an alarm or I'd somebody rings me. When i go on my iTunes, or YouTube, I can no longer turn the volume setting up/down, the function is no longer there. When impress the 2 volume buttons on the left hand side it comes up 'ringer' with the speaker symbol, but no squares underneath, and I can't turn things up or down. When earphones are are plugged in sound is fine.
Please somebody help. I have already tried soft and hard resets.
(and it is not on mute)
    James

If you update ur iphone 4 and lost all those features, the only way you can fix it is with itunes, plug in to ur computer and restore the IOS , before do that make sure to back up all ur info on icloud and ur computer.
    Good luck

  • Sound issue with iPhone 4 playback. Help

I'm using my iPhone 4 as an iPod for the first time and for some reason it has a strange echo effect that makes the sound muffled and completely silences parts of songs. Is there a setting to fix this?
    I'm drawing blanks

If you are using the headphones try pushing them in a little more. I had this issue too and since I have a bumper on my phone I figured it wasn't all the way in.

  • Sound issues with Iphone 4?

My sound stopped working on my phone for phone calls only. The speaker phone option works but I cannot hear any sound if it is not on speaker phone.

Have been to store twice for this.  They told me it's a software bug and I had to wipe out the phone and restore with new software as opposed to restore from backup.  That seemed to solve the issue...have had good calls for the past 4 days...until tonight...when the same issue occured again.  Arggghhh.  Outbound call, on my headset, and the speaker phone turns on.  Once that happens, everytime I try to make an outbound call, with or without headset, speaker phone comes on and no one can hear me on the other end.  Toggling the speaker phone button does nothing.  I have not swapped out the phone (they offered to at the store) because one of their experts was 100% certain it's a software issue.  For whatever reason, it's not returned.  I have not reinstalled a new incidence of the phone software because I haven't had time.  May have to do this tomorrow.  Appreciate insight from others on what has worked for them.  As I said, installing the phone as a new phone and not from backup worked...for 4 days.

  • Has iOS 6.1.3 fixed speaker  / sounds issue with iphone 4 and 4s?

updating to iOS 6.1.1 or 6.1.2 cause external speaker not working on iphone 4 and iphone 4s.

    Hi there,
    I'm writing from Switzerland.
I got the same issue since iOS 6.1.1 or 6.1.2 and expected improvement with iOS 6.1.3...but I still have the same problem.
Additionnaly I can no more listen to music when I plug my Iphone 4s on a dock station of logitech speaker.
Before iOS 6.1.1 all worked well.
Just to know, do you use the itubes apps?

  • I'm having sound issues with my iphone 3gs

Ok, so the speaker sound on my iphone 3gs has stopped working.  The only sound I do get is my ringtone and if I play a voicemail.  I also do get sound when I plug headphones in.  However, whenever I get a text message or an email, my phone vibrates even though my ringer is on.  I don't hear the click sound when I unlock my screen or type anything.  If I push the volume side buttons, the small, black volume/ringer box does not appear and if I play music the volume adjustment setting is missing.  I've reset my phone, I've backed it up, I've messed around with the sound settings, my software is up-to-date, I've tried cleaning my headphone jack with a q-tip and nothing has worked.  I have no idea why the sound stopped working since the speaker sound worked earlier today, I haven't dropped it, and I've only had this phone for about a year.  Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sad to report that I have the same issues between three to four times a day.  Before I got my iPhone 4S (first iPhone I've owned, btw) I used to have a Sony Ericsson C902 that I operated along with a bluetooth headset HBH-DS205 that used to work perfectly together.  Now, with the headset and the iPhone 4S I keep noticing that the connection breaks and all I can do to restore it is to turn the headset off and on every time.  I listen to music all day long on the headset and this issue can get to irritating levels.  Also sometimes I feel stupid as at work I'm one of the few 4S owners and, the iPhone being a state of the art device, my coworkers get to see me scrambling to figure out whether I need to bring the phone up to my ear or just one of the earpieces to my ear.  The headset also has a answer/hang-up button that as of late, for the same reason, I cannot know for sure will start or end a call.  I would hate to be forced to drop the headset as I really love it too.

  • Iphone sound issues?

Is anybody else having sound issues with their iphone? Ive had my phone for a few months now, and the sound on the part where you hear, and the speaker phone part cut out for awhile. Randomly..... That was about 3 weeks from having the phone. It came back on for a few days, and its not been working for a good month until today. I never changed any of the settings for anything, not even for the ringtones, or sound, nothing. In order for me to talk on the phone id have to have it on speaker phone to work. But I could never hear sound through those speakers when playing music, i could only do it through talking on the phone(hoping this makes sense so far). Im just curious to know if anyone else has had the same problem cause its kind of an annoyance to spend 400 bucks on a phone when you have these issues.

Just had another call to Apple support. This time they suggested sticking the headphone jack in and out a few times in case the phone was registering it was in headphone mode. This seems to have worked! (I think I've only used the headphones about twice.)
How on earth did the phone decide it was in headphone mode?! Result seems satisfactory but I don't think this should happen in such an expensive gadget.

  • Iphone 4S sound issue - sound stops working after a few minutes

The sound on my iphone 4S stops working after a couple of minutes, including both the headphones and the loudspeaker. If I unplug the headphones and replug them in, the sound starts to work again, but only for a few minutes until it conks out again. How can I fix this problem?

Any problem when connected to another wi-fi network besides your own?
The only additonal troubleshooting options after powering the iPhone off and on, an iPhone reset, and resetting network settings on the iPhone is restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup and/or restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.
If no change after restoring as a new iPhone or not from the backup - the same when connected to any wi-fi network besides your own as well as not being able to maintain internet access when connected to your carrier's cellular network, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

For each mail account, along with designating a primary SMTP server, you should be able to just turn off any and all other SMTP servers you have listed.  In that case, if there is a problem with comcast, the message send should just fail.
Also make sure your comcast smtp settings are correct (port, likely 587 but might be something else for comcast, whether you should be suing SSL or not, do you need authentication or not).
You might find the comcast forums useful for getting the settings right - I found this:
    http://forums.comcast.com/t5/E-Mail-and-Xfinity-Connect-Help/iphone-email/m-p/66 1151?view=by_date_ascending#M131151
The second poster notes, SSL should be on, authentication should be "password" and you should be using port 995

  • My own Battery Drain Issues on iPhone 5

Hello guys, I've just created an account here to share my many issues with iPhone 5.
Well, this wasn't my Apple's 1st product, as I've had Ipod touch 2g and 3g, as well as an iPhone 3g. But it's my first time experiencing crazy battery issues with an Apple product, wich is really sad and disappoint, since this is the MOST expensive cell phone in my country (Brazil).
It all started about a week after I bought my iPhone 5. One morning I was on the bus, going to work, and my iPhone had about 99% battery remaining. 1h20 later, when I arrived at work, I had about 80% battery, so I panicked.
Suddenly I realized I was a victim of the common i5 battery drain. I was loosing 1% battery each 3~5 minutes IN STAND BY. And my settings are the same as they've ever been: wi-fi off, 3G off, 4G off (since it's not available in Brazil), brightness on minimum, no weak cell phone coverage etc. So, I shouldn't be experiencing this at all.
After reading lots of threads around the web, I realized that the ONLY solution to this would RESET AND START YOUR IPHONE AS A NEW ONE. No backups, no deleting apps and data. Sometimes removing email accounts would work, but as I didn't use this stuff, restarting my phone seemed to be the solution.
So I did it and, apparently, my problems were solved. My phone has worked perfectly for 2+ months. And then I let it fully discharge - but it's was not the first time it' happened. After I recharged for 4h, I started loosing battery really fast again, so the battery drain have came back. It was so frustrating.
Then I sent my iphone to an authorized reseller and they manage to give me a new replacement phone. They've checked my old i5 and detected a battery issue. My charger and cable were also tested but they were ok.
Well, after the very first charge on my new phone - and I've set it up as a new phone - the battery drain started again. I couldn't believe it.
So now I'm waiting for my 3rd iphone 5 in 3 months...
PS: My original iPhone 5 was bought in the USA, and the replacement one came from Brazil. Both were running iOS 6.1.4 when the issues started.
After all that, here are my conclusions:
    1) In normal conditions, with wi-fi, 3G and LTE off, you should expect your iPhone 5 to waste 1% of battery every 1h30~2h15 on STANDBY. This is based on my best iphone performance and on Apple's information: iPhone 5 should have 225h of battery time (in standby) at it's best. Since 100% = 225h, every 2h15min you should expect to "waste" 1% of battery, on standby.
Sometimes, overnight, your phone might have an even better battery life: my friend only lost 1% for about 8h/9h overnight. But this is just not common. Expect to loose about 2%~3% every night with all apps closed and no wifi/3G/LTE.
    2) If you detect a battery drain, GO TO AN APPLE STORE/RESELLER RIGHT THE WAY. Don't even bother trying a reset, as I did, because it might solve the problem for a while, but it CAN come back. Go to the apple store and ask for a diagnostic of your phone and battery. It will save you a lot of time.
    3) There are MANY causes to battery drains. The most common ones seem to be: 1- Push notifications/email related stuff -> Reset email, internet and settings. 2- Facebook app -> reinstall app. 3- Defective battery - go to apple store/genius and ask for a replacement phone.
    4) If an iPhone comes from factory with battery issues, expect AT LEAST ONE other issue. My original phone's touch screen was unresponsive when charging on PC and connect to iTunes and my replacement phone's microphone was not working properly. So expect other defective parts
    5) With my experience, I've realized I might have discovered A NEW CAUSE TO BATTERY DRAIN: A DEFECTIVE NANO-SIM CARD. Why? Well, because it's the only thing that I have used on both my iPhones (original and replacement ones). And it's the only thing thats has never been tested (both my charger and cable were tested on apple's reseller and were ok). And in my replacement phone, after I removed the SIM, I started loosing 1% battery every 1h20, when on stand by and with no wi-fi, 3G or LTE. So, if you have a battery issue CONSIDER THE SIM CARD TO BE THE PROBLEM.
Also, when my replacement phone was near any amplifier/pc speaker, it would make the amp make that "call or text incoming" sound. (to understand this, put your phone near an amplifier/speaker and ask for someone to call you). This makes me believe that the SIM card was, somehow, defective and making my phone receiving data (and I mean only telephone data, like related to calls and sms) when it shouldn't.
That's all my friends. If anyone has ever experienced this crazy issues, please try to help me. I'm getting a new sim card, iOS7 and my 3rd replacement phone and let's see if it works as it should.
Sorry for the MANY mistakes, my English is not good =\.
    Cheers from Brazil!

    Hi Folks,
iPhone & iPad2 battery drain issue SOLVED!!!!!
I had a serious battery drain problem on THREE devices using different iOS .... it was a simple fix and had certain characteristics that you may be able to relate to ......
    Devices;     16GB iPhone 4 with IOS6
                      16GB iPhone 4S with iOS7.06
                      32G iPad2 with iOS7.04
On or about Feb. 28th all three devices started to drain the battery like crazy losing about 20%/hour on the iPhones and 10%/hour on the iPad2 .... After messing around with settings, browsing forums and looking at what was common between the three devices I concluded the problem was with a single Microsoft Outlook/Live/Hotmail email account in the iOS native mail app .... I deleted the email account on all three devices (along with other unrelated Microsoft accounts on each device) and did a hard reboot (hold HOME and top LOCK button simultaniously for about 10 seconds until the apple logo appeared).
I then re-created the common Microsoft Outlook/Live/Hotmail account on all three devices in the iOS native mail app ...... SUCCESS! Now all three devices are behaving normaly with respect to battery drain ......
Hopefully this will be useful to others in this thread ..........

  • The sound on my iPhone 4S isn't working. When headphones are plugged in you can listen to music an watch videos but when you take the headphones out the option to adjust volume goes away and you can't hear music or videos. Any idea how to fix this?

Today I tried listening to music on my iPhone 4S, only to find that my volume adjuster had disappeared. And just to clarify, when I say that it disappeared, I mean that when I press the volume buttons on my phone, I see the speaker icon but the gauge bar is gone. I can't hear music or watch videos

  • Sound issues in iOS6

I'm having random sound issues since upgrading iPhone to iOS6. For instance, after using iMessage I will sleep the phone without exiting iMessage. 5 mins later I will have messages sent to me but there were no sound notifications indicating such. Only if I exit iMessage prior to sleeping the phone will I hear notifications of new texts or iMessages.   Also, random sounds like the swoosh when sending an email will mute randomly. I have to shut the phone off and restart before it works again.    Why is this happening?

If you have a iMessage open and into a message, normally it will not sound.  I think it is because you already have it open and in it.  That is what I have noticed.

  • I cannot activate a ringtone which I prepared with Iringer. It appears in iTunes under sounds but doesn't appear in sounds on the iPhone!!!

I cannot activate a ringtone which I prepared with Iringer. It appears in iTunes under sounds but doesn't appear in sounds on the iPhone!!!

if you created a ringtone, it should appear in the tone menu in itunes.
Is the ringtone 30 seconds or less?
Also I would check the iringer support site to resolve your issue.

  • Sound issues - only headphones or speaker working

    Hi all,
I've only had my phone a few weeks, but I've today started having a problem with the sound on my iphone 4. The system is acting as though my headphones are permanently plugged in - in that I can only hear callers etc if I have them on speaker phone or use headphones.
I've tried resetting the phone, just in case, and have tried plugging and unplugging the headphones jack repeatedly to no avail. The phone hasn't been dropped or damaged in any way (as far as I'm aware!). Any suggestions appreciated
    Sophie
    Any ideas?

    Perusmuro,
I don't think it is a software issue, most headphone jacks take care of the transfer between speaker and headphones thru mechanical switching.
I really am starting to become gun shy of this forum. It seem like every time I browse it someone finds a new Major problem and as soon as it is mentioned a dozen people chime in with "Yup me too".
This sound like a low quality headphone jack problem and something that will require a phone exchange.
It is just amazing how one high end phone can have so many serious problems and not a single comment from Apple about any of them except for the antenna issue and there reply to that was it doesn't really exist and if it does it is OK because all smart phone have this problem that doesn't exist.
Maybe just because it is late and I am tired but it appears the iP4 has more problems than it has components. Before I get all the folks jumping me about theirs works fine, so does mine but I'll be damned if I am going to plug a headset in to find out if I can break mine - I would just as soon not know. Ignorance is bliss or something like that.
