Sound issues on Mac Pro

I have an external speaker system "Yamaha Home Theatre sound system" Which is working fine through the digital optical connection on the back of my Mac Pro.
I have just install Windows XP on a separate internal drive but I can't figure out how to get the MP to recognize the Yamaha system via Windows! I accessed the the volume control in Windows but the advanced controls are grayed out.
Has anyone managed to get an external sound system working through Windows on an Mac Pro and if so how did you achieve this?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards Denis.

  • The best way to get 5.1 sound out of Mac Pro

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but could someone recommend me the best way to get 5.1 sound of a Mac Pro. Since I don't require hi-fi -level sound, just simple directional audio for gaming and such, I wouldn't like to pour a lot of money to this. As I see it, I'd need an external sound card, internal PCI-E soundcard or speakers that have an optical input. I would like for the cost to be in two digits, euro or dollar.
    Any suggestions about hardware?

Once again, the issue of 5.1 w/Apple comes up.
    Here is the bottom line.
You will only get 5.1 audio if the following conditions are true:
    - You are using the OPTICAL output on your Mac
    - You are playing a DVD with a 5.1 soundtrack
That's it. The simple truth is, that even if you have a Z-5500 setup (like I do), you still will not get 5.1 surround in ///any/// applications other then while playing a DVD.
There is no way to get 5.1 out of a game on a Mac Pro. No matter how much money you throw at it. The support simply is not there. It is not a software issue, it is not a driver issue. It is the game developer's issue (sort of), and it is a //lack of hardware// issue.
The complex truth, and I will attempt to explain, isn't that simple.
Your Mac Pro or Macbook only has a single line-out, that supports 2 channels at the maximum. Optical audio will only handle 2 channels as well- it's the same signal (in two channels) on a different medium, basically.
All PC soundcards that support proper 5.1 (save for a select few) have //multiple// line-out jacks for Front Left/Right, Center/Sub, and Rear Left/Right (3 plugs total for 5.1). Since your Mac/Mac Pro doesn't have this, you can't hook up a 5.1 speaker set and expect true 5.1.
You do have optical audio, however, this only works in 5.1 when a Dolby Digital signal is piped through the optical cable.
Dolby Digital works by encoding a 5.1 signal as a data stream, sending it to a receiver, where it is decoded and played back as 5.1 stereo. DVD's have this audio pre-encoded on the disk.
If you wanted 5.1 output from your games, they'd need to ether have the sound/audio data encoded as Dolby 5.1, or support encoding on the fly to take a 5.1 signal, encode it, and pipe it out the optical audio plug. Xbox360 does this, because they've licensed the technology from Dolby- as have the game developers.
Unfortunately, none of the developers for Macintosh gaming have yet to include live Dolby 5.1 encoding (I think Doom 3 had a beta patch that did- I could be wrong).
If the game doesn't support the above feature, then you only get basic 2 channel audio.
*Do not buy a Fireface 800.*
This is a professional audio interface (like an external soundcard). While it supports 5.1 output via 6 individual outputs, you need SPEAKERS that have +built in amplifiers+ (called a Studio Monitor). Not just one amplifier- all the speakers have it built in and take a balanced stereo input.
You're looking at $1300 for the Fireface 800, and another $200 per speaker. This is not cheap, is not meant for gaming, and is not consumer grade equipment. It's pro audio, designed for Logic 8 and similar.
Even if you did spend the money, trust me, I'd know... I have a 5.1 setup running through an Apogee Ensemble (a $2000 "soundcard"), and I do not get 5.1 support from Quake 4, C&C 3, or any other game. I only get 5.1 surround from my audio production in Logic 8.
To recap, since this has been asked many times- and I don't want you wasting your money here (just trying to be helpful!)...
*There is no simple or cost-efficient way to get 5.1 from your Mac, other then while playing a DVD movie.*
I would highly recommend that you buy a very good pair of 2.1 speakers with a Sub woofer. Maybe even a pair that takes an optical input for audio. If you really want to spend the money to *watch a DVD in surround sound,* then you can... And it'll work wonderfully, but gaming will not give you surround sound at all.
*Again- There are no games out that support 5.1. Just because you technically support Dolby 5.1, doesn't mean the applications are aware of it and can utilize the 5.1 surround.*
Edit: I may have neglected to also mention that the Firewave unit will support 5.1 properly through 3 separate plugs (much like a PC soundcard does), however the only game I am aware of that supports this is Unreal Tournament 2003 for Mac (or was it 04?), with an experimental patch for 5.1 via OpenAL. Last I heard, it worked okay, but crashed occasionally.
Most of the other games out there just don't support 5.1, period (probably due to the lack of hardware on the Mac computers from the factory).

I had a smilier issue... If you're using external speakers (as opposed to the ones on the display), you may need to re-select them in System Preferences. Some preference choices seem to reset with the Yosemite install.

  • Streaming Issues from Mac Pro using Apple TV

I have recently purchased a Mac Book Pro with retina display and tried streaming content using my apple tv (3rd gen). The picture streams (providing my bluetooth is off) but the sound continuously stutter. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hello PaulKinger,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are experiencing some performance issues with sound while using AirPlay between your Mac Pro and your Apple TV. To begin troubleshooting, I would suggest working through the steps outlined in the attached article.
Resolve issues with AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring from iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
Resolve performance issues with AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring
If you are experiencing intermittent playback or significant network lag with AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring, it could be due to a weak Wi-Fi connection, interference, or the distance between the Wi-Fi router and your iOS device, Apple TV or AirPort Express.
    Try these suggestions:
Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
If possible, try to locate your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your iOS device and Apple TV.
If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
If the Wi-Fi router has an external antenna, check to see that is it connected properly and in good condition.
Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

Has anyone else encountered or solved this problem?  Same thing is happening for me with a new MacBook Pro, 13" i7 and an Echo Audiofire 4.  It's not even clear to me from searching if this is the processor idling or the firewire port hardware.  Only thing clear to me from testing is that it does have something to do with using an audio interface - I don't get this noise plugging in my external hard drive, but I still hear it if I daisy-chain the hd through my interface.  Any help or recommendations appreciated - do pc firewire ports have this issue too?

  • Is it even possible to edit surround sound on a Mac Pro?!?!?!

    Hello,
I've just been reading this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2924869?
Which among many things discusses the fact that Mac Pros, even through an optical cable, are not capable of exporting live 5.1 audio - they can only playback already encoded 5.1 dolby audio from DVD's for example. Apparently the optical out is a purely stereo affair otherwise. I've finally received my Logitech 5450 speakers (took weeks and weeks) and hooked them up. They can indeed playback 5.1 from a DVD, which is splendid. However, one of the things I was most looking forward to was working on surround mixes in Soundtrack Pro. However, firstly STP doesn't want to convert stereo files into surround (like the video online showed), but only means that the surround panner pans between the two front speakers. (I know there's another thread about that, but the proposed solution of adjusting the collapse slider does nothing).
Secondly, and perhaps more confusingly, if I load an actual 5.1 file from the STP content, it still doesn't play in proper surround - the centre speaker kind of works and I think something's rumbling through the subwoofer, but both of the left speakers and right speakers are 'compressed' into the front one alone - nothing comes out of the rear speakers (they are perfectly connected I assure you!). In other words, f I move the puck in the surround panner so it's solely on the front right, and then over to the rear right, it's exactly the same (coming out the front).
I'm sure there must be a solution. Why would Apple advertise the ease with which one can now mix surround if the Mac Pro (I'm not exactly talking about a mac mini here) cannot export live 5.1?
Something which I'm sure is related, but which I can't solve, is that if I go into Audio MIDI setup in Utilities, and try and 'Configure Speakers', only two channels are recognised, and it won't let me select any of the multichannel options (such as 5.1, which is greyed out.)
Anyone know what I'm going on about? I'm totally lost - not really an audio person in general, but hoping to enrich my short films with some surround magic.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Steve
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Typically 5.1 is mixed, and monitored on a 5.1 monitoring system, which means you need an audio interface and setup capable of outputting six channels of audio.
So of course the Mac Pro is capable, but not without additional multi-channel playback and monitoring hardware.
Encoded surround sound, which you hear on playback from things like a DVD, is entirely different story and the encoding is done at the end of the mixing/mastering process. Sometimes you will encode a mix in a variety of formats, Dolby Pro Logic, DTS etc.

  • Internal hard drive issue with Mac Pro

I work for two office that share information through a VPN. Each office has one Mac Pro being used as a server for data storage. The Pros have four internal hard drives (1TB each).
Hard drives in the Pro for OFFICE 1 were configured like so:
    HD1 - OS/Boot drive
    HD2 - Time Machine backup of HD1/DATA1/DATA2
    DATA1 - Data storage
    DATA2 - Data storage
Three weeks ago: Time Machine could not find HD2 and could not backup. I rebooted the machine and HD2 reappeared. However, after the reboot, DATA1 did not mount. I was unable to find DATA1 in Disk Utility. However, the drive could be accessed by all other Macs on the network. This machine was taken to the local Apple Store and we were told that HD2 was a bad drive and need to be replaced. We opted not to replaced the drive at this time and turned Time Machine backups off. We haven't had any problems with DATA1 since. (NOTE: During the weeks prior, the client machines intermittently lost connection with DATA1 and would have to reconnect)
Last week: OFFICE 2 - Mac Pro hard drives configured the same as OFFICE 1; however, HD2 was not used for TM backups. TM was turned on and set to backup HD1/DATA1/DATA2 to HD2 (exactly like OFFICE 1). The next day, TM could not find HD2 and backups stopped running. I rebooted the machine, HD2 reappeared, but we did not restart the TM backups.
Today: OFFICE 2 client machines have experienced intermittent disconnecting of DATA1.
I wasn't extremely concerned with the situation at OFFICE 1 as these Pros are almost five years old and in constant use. We plan on purchasing an external drive for the TM backups. HOWEVER, with a similar situation now being experienced in OFFICE 2, I am perplexed.
Could both machine be experiencing hard drive failures weeks apart? They were both purchased and installed at the same time.
Is there a known issue with TM and internal drives?
One difference between the two machines: OFFICE 1 is running OS X 10.8.5; OFFICE 2 runs 10.6.8
    Any suggestions/help is appreciated. Thanks!

Relying on TimeMachine has some issues, along with only having one, I use at least two swapping TimeMachine so that they rotate AND I clone every drive (volume actually) so I can swap drives if need be, especially useful for t he system but good for any drive.
Power issues in t he buildings?
There are some programs that will scan for and report and./or attempt to reassign a failing sector ("fail" is qualitative, is 10 write failures a fail? then the 9th is not but it is a "weak sector.") Some run in the background.
Mirror can be 2 or 3 ( I prefer 3, that way if one fails I STILL have a mirror array in place) where any failure is not acceptable, AND where the array data is backed up usually - less important  when using a three-drive configurations.
How old, when last initialized (zero), and is it showing spare blocks being used? that last is the most indicative of failed drive.
Rare but a bad SATA cable or power (seeing how the cables are tucked away) is only way generally for multiple failures in same drive bay or computer. Note: early on in 2006-7 there were reports of some customers having motherboard and trouble with a drive bay , and t he problems showed up early.
Often though it is NVRAM or SMC related issue trigged by something else, a USB cable or device that is faulty, even a PCIe controller that is the culprit. And replacing cable, keyboard, device, and resetting SMC and NVRAM (often NVRAM needed to be done multiple times, but never keep resetting SMC) - unplugged and when you connect back up, do not install anything other than system, keyboard and mouse and see if that helps.
With a drive, likely the drive in 85% or more, is fine, but the directory is not, or it needs to be erased to rebuild all the system partitions.
1TB is small for TimeMachine. 350% of the amount of data, and always have free space for a full backup set of all the data. T.M. will try and prefers to automatically backup any and everything plugged in and connected, rather than my preference which is ASK FIRST to add a drive to TM backup set, otherwise leave it out. 600GB of data and system would mean 2.5TB drive, maybe 2TB minimum.

  • Windows 7 Install Issues with Mac Pro

I have Mac Pro with Windows XP SP3 installed with Boot Camp on a separate, dedicated 250GB HD.
I purchased an upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium. I hoped to install the 64-bit version. I upgraded, per Boot Camp I&S Guide, Boot Camp to version 3.1. After Boot Camp upgrade, I mounted the Windows 7 64-bit installation disk. Since the Windows disk did not open automatically, I then attempted to open the Setup.exe file but got the following error message –
“D:/setup.exe is not a valid Win 32 application.”
I suspect the Boot Camp 3.1 upgrade was for the 32-bit Windows XP system currently installed and this caused Windows 7 (64-bit) not to open.
If my suspicion is correct, would upgrading to Boot Camp 3.1 (64-bit) cause problems with the currently installed Windows XP? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have since attempted to boot from the Windows 7 install disk by using both the OS 10.6.3 System Preferences/Startup Disk and from within Windows XP using the Boot Camp Control Panel. In both cases, all I saw was a black screen with a “Select CD-ROM Boot Type” and flashing cursor. No keyboard input was possible.
If anyone encounters this problem, go to the Boot Camp/Installation and Storage discussion and search for “Select CD-ROM Boot Type”. Hal Jay Greene has an excellent article here titled “Select CD-ROM Boot Type Error installing Windows 7 in Boot Camp walkthrough” dated Mar 20, 2010 that walks one through the process of creating a boot disk for installing Windows 7 x64. Two minor comments on his discussion. John Anderson’s blog is at www.AndersonsHatch.com (note extra s) and Imgburn can be downloaded free from www.imgburn.com.
I used Mr. Greene’s procedure and the resultant boot disk loaded Windows 7 correctly.
Unfortunately, a new issue arose. Installing Windows 7 over Windows XP requires a clean install that eliminates all Boot Camp installations. After installing Windows 7, I attempted to load Boot Camp by inserting the Mac SL installation disk and clicking on Setup in the Boot Camp folder. The result was this error message: “Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model”. Fortunately, there is a procedure that worked for me, and my MacPro, to bypass this error message. It can be found near the bottom of this article http://blog.andersonshatch.com/2009/01/11/windows-7-x64-on-a-macbook-pro-guide/ on John Anderson’s blog.

I'm on my second graphics card [ATI Radeon HD 2600] after having issues with the original [NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT]. The issue with the NVIDIA card was that, at times, it would display digital artifacts, glitches, distortion and freeze up the system forcing me to have to do a hard shut down. I found many reports of similar issues with that card and the Mac Pro 1,1's.
When I replaced it with the ATI the problem went away for 6 months and now IT"S BACK.
So, are there any particular graphics cards that work OK with the Mac Pro 1,1? I don't want to waste my money again only to encounter the same issue!
I'm also contemplating getting a new Mac all together.
Please advise, I've read many threads with this issue and they all seem to point to the same deal: replace the card. I can't afford to keep replacing graphics cards.
    Saki

The 2600XT required 10.5.2+ and while it may 'look' like a G5 the Mac Pro is not. G5 refers to IBM PowerPC based, not Intel Xeon EFI based.
You're running 10.6.3, might want to update your profile itself.

  • Urgent Issue New Mac Pro (Im going CRAZY)

I recently purchased a MAC Pro with the following specifications:
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: DUAL 2.26 GHz

L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB

and I seem to be getting very slow results in Motion. I have an IMAC with motion and it is able to process and playback faster than on my MAC PRO.
FCP is a thousand times faster but I am mainly working with Motion.
Also when I am on the internet and looking at some websites with Flash I notice a slower results with the MAC PRO
I am guessing my issue here is with the Graphics Card..
But How WHAT? I am using a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 (I know its not super fast but faster than that on my IMAC)
Is there some type of control of allowing me to use more of the graphics card? I just am wondering if the graphics card is being maximized and if it is what does this mean? I know that I could buy another NIVIDA GeForce GT 120 but will my system be able to use them both. I am using Leopard and I know that the software like motion and even leopard are limited to how much of the graphics card may be used.
    Ahhh
    Please help!!

First, what versions of FCS/OS are you using on your i-Mac and what versions on your new Mac Pro?
Second, Motion does not like working with more than one card installed, however, I have two 2400HD cards installed and have no problems with motion (FCS 2). Some believe the two card problem is with Plugs, not Motion. I tend to agree.
Third, there is a known problem with Flash player in both Macs and PCs. I answered this question yesterday on this dissucussion board. You need to uninstall all traces of Flash player and then reinstall the latest player. The uninstaller, instructions and info about the problem is on the Adobe support page.
Post back with the info from my first comment and we'll go from there.

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 Playback Issue / Crash Mac Pro 2011

    Hi,
I've been having a big crash issue on Premiere Pro CC 2014, since the 2014.1 update.
2014.0 has been working fine this year but the update has crashed some of my biggest current projects.
Programs just starts fine, workspace responds, but anything related to playback just crashes or freezes Premiere.
    My config:
    Mac Pro Mid 2010
    Processor : 2x2,93 6-core Xeon
    Ram : 24Go 1333
    2x ATI Radeon HD 5770.
I've been reading all major topics on this, this i did :
    - disable Mercury Transmission
    - Flushes Premiere cache
    - Reinstall premiere
    - Updated to Mavericks (issue happened both in 10.9 and 10.10 - thought updating drivers+opencl would help, then again no)
    - Repaired permissions
    - Tried with another user session
    … and so on.
Nothing yet has solved my issue, anyone to help me on this major trouble ?
Thanks in advance, best regards !
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
    Try the following:
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
    Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe folder preferences are set to read/write in all 3 locations.
    Delete media cache
    Remove plug-ins
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
    Disable App Nap
    Reboot
I placed the chief culprits in bold.
Report back if anything here worked for you.
    Thanks,
    Kevin
