Sound keeps dropping out every 40 seconds

My sound was totally fine after Lion update but today no matter what program or internet site that has audio, the sound drops out for about a second every 30-40 seconds on my imac 27". This happens again with itunes, youtube, internet videos etc. I tried resetting the PRAM but no change. I have my imac plugged into an optical cable into my logitech 5500 surround system. Any body else having paused/dropouts intheir audio? Its very frustrating cause its almost as if someone is hitting the paus button on and off every few seconds.

For some strange reason the optical cable from the imac to the speakers has a problem. I replaced it with another one and no more sound issues and everything is fine. I thought optical cables never go bad unless kinked and mine was clearly not. Whatever, everything is made junky these days and nothing lasts.

  • Broadband keeps dropping out - every 20 mins or so...

This is getting beyond a joke now so really hope someone can help fix this for me.  The broadband started dropping out every 20 mins or so about 6 weeks ago and is just getting worse.  Any moderators reading this - if I can't get it sorted I'm leaving BT.
Have read a few posts and I think this is the info I need to provide.
    I have a Home Hub 3.
Speed test on the line gives download speed of 4.85Mbps and an IP profile of 5.87Mbps.
Upstream test gives 1.18Mbps and a Rate IP profile of 0.83Mbps
I performed the quiet line test and the line was perfectly quiet with no crackles or hisses.
    The ADSL stats are below.
Anything anyone can do to help will be much appreciated.

  • Why does the sound keep dropping out?

Can someone explain to me in very simple terms how to fix my Airport Express so that it doesn't keep dropping the sound when I'm playing iTunes. About every minute to a minute and a half, the sound drops out for a second or two. It is very annoying. I have checked the communities, but none of the recommended fixes are making any sense to me. One suggested that it was the internet speed, so I actually upgraded my internet yesterday to a faster speed, but I am still running into this issue.
I am using a PC. I am playing iTunes wirelessly. The distance between my router, my computer, and the Airport Express shouldn't be an issue; they are relatively close together. I have had no other issues with my wireless. My Blu-ray player is able to access the internet wirelessly and stream movies with no problem, so I don't understand why I am having such an issue with streaming music.
I love the concept of the Airport Express, but I am ready to take it back to the store for a refund.

Thanks for your reply. Both my AEX and my router are set to the same channel (6). (From what I understand, they need to be set to the same channel for it to run through WiFi, right?) When I run a scan, nothing else in the area is set to that channel, so I don't think there should be any interference.
I went through the rest of the settings, and they all seem to be correct. I'm not sure how to check if it is set as a client only, but it is set for airplay and I didn't set it up to extend the network. I verified that it is set to "join a wireless network," not "extend a wireless network."
The signal I am getting from my router is at 100%, so I thought I'd give it another try after verifying everything. It still drops out. I timed the drop-outs this time, and it is actually happening literally every minute, almost to the second.
I think I might be heading back to the store for a refund later today unless I get some other suggestions on what will fix this issue. If the drop-outs happened every 20 minutes, even every 10 minutes, I could put up with it, but every minute is unacceptable.

  • Why does the sound on my new iPad keep dropping out

I have done some trouble shouting following a few threads but for some reason the sound on my new iPad keeps dropping out every min or so for afew seconds.  Tried to reboot the router and also reset wifi settings on the iPad. I am also having problems connecting to wifi intermitant as this may be it is frustrating.
Is this a known issue and do apple have a fix?
    Thanks for any help

No not at all if the music is downloaded only when using wifi

Why doesn't it remember the wifi password like the other i devises, it's a bugger entering it in every time.

  • Audio Drop out @ every 2 seconds

Having issue with the Audio dropping out every @ 2 seconds, indepentant of source (local, sync'd computer and web trailers). Have done factory reset, still doing the same thing. AppleTV is connected to the TV through HDMI connection.

Try turning your tv (not tv) off and on.

  • Video keeps dropping out???

Had my FIOS installed today, now when watching TV (both VOD and regular television) the picture keeps dropping out for a second or two at a rate of almost once every 10 minutes. As rapidly as 4 minutes between occurrences when it first started this afternoon....
Anyone have any advice? My set topbox is the CHS 435 HDC if that helps....
    Thanks!!!

    Hi Sean_dohring,
First change the Quicktime setting to 1.5/T1/LAN
Both Bandwidths should be set to NONE.
Is the cable modem Routing ?
If so open port 5297, 5298 and 5353 for Bonjour. Or use UPnP.
And turn off the Distributing Addresses in the Airport.
If the cable modem is not routing the Airport can Distibute Addresses.
Was the Airport Express set up to "Join an Existing Network"

  • 3G connection keeps dropping out after 4.2.1 update

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could help me.
I have the iPhone 4, and it was working perfectly... until I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1.
Ever since then, my 3G connection keeps dropping out, and I'm just left with vodafone UK (with usually 3-4 bar signal) but no 'o', 'E' or '3G' symbol.
After about 20 minutes of no cellular data, I'd get the 'o' symbol, then 10 seconds later it would change to '3G'. But then after 5 seconds it would lose it. The cycle would continue in this way.
Strangely, when at home, the 3G would stay connected. But when I go anywhere, I lose 3G.
When I turn 3G off, I get constant 'o' connection where ever I go. It doesn't drop out.
I've tried resetting the phone, and resetting network settings.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I'm having a similar issue with my new iPhone 4 (w/ 4.2.1)... It continually cycles through the following sequence:
    AT&T / 3G
    AT&T / No Data
    Searching…
    Searching… 3G
    AT&T / 3G
    (loops…)
Here is a video of the cycling. Note the iPhone 4 is just sitting on a coffee table in my house.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7186070/ip4fw421searching.mov
Also worth noting, I just got the iPhone 4 and I updated it to 4.2.1 right away. Previously, I had a 3GS which did not exhibit any of this behavior in the same location in my house. Also, my girlfriend still has a 3GS and has FW 4.2.1 without these issues. I have a video of her phone in the exact same location taken just after the clip above and her phone maintains 3-bars / AT&T / 3G the entire time.
I picked up the iPhone 4 while out of state over the holiday weekend and did not observe any of these connectivity issues, in fact the 3G throughput of the iPhone 4 was significantly better (consistently got >4 Mbps down / >800 Kbps up) than what my family members were seeing with their 3GS models.
I believe it is a baseband issue introduced with the 4.2.1 update for iPhone 4, but I also strongly believe there is some tower component to this problem (ie, software revision at the tower or configuration).
Like others here, I also performed a restore to 4.2.1 through iTunes and setup my phone as "New" and I continue to see the behavior. The phone is unusable in my house unless I manually disable 3G. As a final data point, when I'm able to maintain a 3G connection long enough in my house I get the following throughput from Speedtest.net: 1863 Kbps down / 543 Kbps up.

  • Problems with my new phone (wi-fi, all cell reception keep dropping out)

I recently brought my apple iPhone 3GS (last 2 weeks) and pretty much since day 1 I've the same problem. The phone network I have keeps dropping out for no reason at all, wi-fi connection too (I maintain little or no coverage, but as I've taken the sim card back to the company for inspection, they've said the sim is fine and I shouldnt be having this problem) any ideas on how to resolve this issue???

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
I'm afraid i'm not familiar with mHotspot but it sounds like it's not providing correct DNS settings over DHCP and that you need to enter them manually in the phone. You can do this under Settings -> WiFi -> [tap and hold the network] -> Modify network -> Show advanced options -> IP settings -> Static. But for information on what settings you should use you need to check with the support for mHotspot. I suspect you should either use the DNS from your ISP or enter the IP of the virtual interface created my mHotspot.

After updating to IOS7 I have lost a years worth of pictures and my wi-fi keeps dropping out.  Anyone have any similar problems or suggestions?

    Re wifi:
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Why does the sound keep going out?

The sound keeps going out for everything:  iTunes, any website  which has audio, even the volume buttons on my keyboard.  I notice that when I restart my computer it will work temporarily, maybe 10-15 minutes and then will go out again.  This just started happening and I'm not sure what is going on. Please help!

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • DSL keeps dropping out - why? :(

I've had Inifinity 2 for a couple of months now and was very pleased with the service initially, high speeds and reliable connection. I work from home so the connection is very important to me.
The last couple of evenings the connection has been dropping completely and taking several minutes to come back up. It's not just the HomeHub, the fibre modem's DSL light goes off as if there's a line fault. This happens repeatedly throughout the evening, usually starting from about 5.45pm. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, it just drops. Nothing has changed here, it has literally started out of the blue. It doesn't matter which devices are connected - wired desktops, laptops, wireless phones/tablets/PS3. It just keeps dropping at random.
I even noticed it a few times this morning.
So, what do you lovely BT chaps need to know from me in order to sort this out?

Thanks. I've now had 2 engineer visits so far and although they temporarily fixed the problem it has now happened again and is really starting to drive my hubby & I crazy!
The first time the engineer came out he checked the socket wiring in the house, found no problems, got a cherrypicker in to check the line at the pole (unsafe to climb apparently) and that improved the speed. He then checked at the modem and found that the cable the engineer (contracter?) who fitted it hadn't fitted the connector properly, some known issue with a fitting tool or something - so he sorted that out and woohoo, back up to full speed - 75mb+
That was fine for a couple of weeks.
Last Monday morning the connection dropped out. Then repeatedly dropped out every few minutes all afternoon, making it almost impossible to work. The speed had also dropped to 35mb according to various online checkers, including BT's speed test, which registered our speed as poor. I gave it until Tuesday just to see if it resolved itself/was a temp problem. No joy, still slow as you like - though no more drop outs. Contacted BT and an engineer came out the next afternoon.
Lovely chap, did all the same checks as before, no faults found, nothing wrong with the wiring. He even tried tugging on the phoneline to the house while checking the line, made no difference, so didn't seem to be anything wrong with the line to the house. All equipment indicated capable of full speed 80mb. All the engineer could say was that there was nothing wrong with the line, but clearly there had been something which caused the line to drop out and the cabinet then dropped our speed to stablise us. He requested a speed reset and all was well (ish) thereafter at about 60-65mb. Not quite as fast as the previous chap got it, but a darn sight better than 35mb.
The next morning another engineer turned up, unaware we'd had a visit the previous afternoon. I told him all about what the engineer had said the previous day and what had happened and he went away. Note I did tell him that he was welcome to come in and have another look, but there was nothing currently wrong for him to look at.
Last night (Sunday) the line dropped out a couple of times - again, no apparent reason. And once again we find our speeds capped at around 35mb. Doing the BT speed tests throws up odd results, telling us we have 0mb to the house and 38mb inside. Odd! I've been on to BT all morning, they tried to pass me onto a paid tech support line which I refused as both engineers have confirmed this isn't going to be something software/settings related - it happens regardless of which computer/laptop/device we are using wired or wireless, the line can even go down when we're not using it.
So, it's been logged on the last fault which is still open and being investigated. I have asked if they can please re-set the line speed for us but have been told this would only be a temporary fix. What else can I do? Something out there is making the line drop out and then we get speed capped. BT can't find a fault.
None the wiser as to why the connection sometimes drops out, but this is clearly the cause of the speed drops as the cabinet tries to stabilise things. We're only a stone's throw from the cabinet and both engineers say we should have full speed.
Could the modem be faulty and causing the drop outs? I don't know. I really don't know what else to do at this point. I guess we're going to end up with another engineer visit, but suspect all he can do is tell us the same thing and get the line reset.
Is there any chance our ancient BT wireless phone could be causing the problem? - we do get a bit of crackle on it, although the line itself is apparently clear of noise when tested. It's not connected to the same socket as the router, but to an extension downstairs (which was originally the master socket, but the engineer who fitted infinity swapped the sockets for us as we needed the fibre upstairs).
Anyone got any other thoughts as to what it could be? Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it?

  • BB Keeps Dropping out

    Hi
I'm hoping someone can help tell me why my broadband keeps dropping out. It is a problem that is hugely frustrating being that I am a homeworker, and each dropout causes my VPN to drop so it is affecting my ability to work properly! I have logged into the HomeHub 3 and captured some information (below) and also speed tested attaching the results. I have tried a diferent filter which makes no difference. I don't have a maser socket (there are 2 lines coming into the house and the BTOR engineer who installed the second just put a double face plate on for simplicity). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
