Sound not functioning in Windows 7 after Arch install

I installed Arch about a week ago, and since then, I have not had any sound output from my headphone jack in Windows. My speakers work perfectly fine. I have since reinstalled all sound drivers, and even ran a system restore to the time before I installed Arch, but nothing made a difference.
My sound is working perfectly fine in Arch.
My laptop is an Asus K53E.
Information about my audio device:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 1b43
    Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
Thanks in advance. I assume that the problem is specific to my machine's specs, since googling this issue didn't do much good.

I tested to see if shutting down the system would yeild the same results as removing the battery and it does. If I simply shut down before booting between operating systems, Windows' audio works correctly.
Still, this problem alludes me. Since I have all of gnome's packages cached in pkg, I decided to remove it completely from my system just to check if the problem is associated with gnome. However, the problem persists...unless there are other suggestions, I am going to keep gnome, and simply shut down everytime I want to switch between Arch and Windows, to assure audio functionality.

  • Windows says "device is not functioning" and "Windows does not recognize"

I lost my USB dock connector cable for my ipod. I just went out today and bought a brand new "Cygnett GrooveLink Strech Retractable USB Cable for iPod". I was pumped when I came home to finally be able to add music to my ipod again, but alas when I plug the iPod in, Windows pops up saying that the device is not functional and that Windows does not recognize it. I tried everything from rebooting the iPod to re-downloading iTunes and iPod updater. After searching this site for the past few hours, I figured I'd try and possibly find some real answers here. Please Help!!

    Hey everyone,
I had the same problems all of you are having. I
just got a 5th generation video ipod. For a few
days, my computer a) wouldn't recognize it; b) froze
up when I connected it; c) mistook it for a mass
    storage device ("drive E"). I bought a USB 2.0
notebook card which didn't work either and actually
seemed to make the problem worse because when I
connected the iPod to it my computer froze up.
I was very confused because my new iPod worked on my
brother's computer--which is much older than mine but
still recognized the iPod and connected to it.
Then I noticed that my brother's computer is running
an older version of the ipod software. I used his
disk to install "Ipod Updater 2005-06-26" rather than
the new version of the software on the Apple Web
site. Then I plugged my iPod into a USB 1.1 port.
To my surprise, my computer finally recognized the
iPod and is now loading music onto it. I cannot
believe this worked. I wonder if the latest version
of the software is faulty in some way.
Try it! I hope it will work for you too. You will
need an older version of the iPod updater software,
so borrow it from a friend with an older ipod.
I am having this problem also...It will work fine on the 1.1 but when i plug it into the 2.0 it has trouble recognizing it...

  • Dual boot Arch and Windows XP (arch installed first) [solved]

I recently moved over to arch from Ubuntu, and would like to install Windows XP so that I can dual-boot between the two. However, my arch install created four partitions on my disk, and I can not create another one.
I would rather not have to reinstall arch, as setting it back up would take days on my current network connection. Is this possible? While I have installed XP over Ubuntu in the past (and am more than able to reform the MBR after the XP install) I have absolutely no experience with disk-partitioning, so concise instructions would be very much appreciated.
errata: my laptop has 4 gigs of RAM, so I don't think I need the SWAP partition. I am hesitant to delete it outright however.
this is a Gparted screenshot, running off of a Ubuntu live CD. The 60 gigs of unallocated space is where I was hoping to install windows.

What's on /dev/sda4?  If you can blow away the last partition, turn the whole thing into an extended partition and then you can set up as many logical partitions as you want inside the extended partition.  I suppose Arch is probably on sda4 and if that is the case you could move arch to sda3 first--there are lots of posts in the forum about how to move an installation of arch from one place to another.
Edit: Beat to the punch again.  Yeah like he said you might want to delete the swap partition and then incorporate it into the 1st or third partitions so you can free up that last one.

  • Power On Self Test [POST] Sound - Not functioning

The following applies to a Mac Pro early 2008 8 core 2.8GHz Xenon with 8GB RAM 4 x HDD none of which is more than 50% occupied, running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1.
The same scenarios also apply to my Lion Clone HDD, it is regularly updated to keep abreast of changes, unfortunately it seems to have updated to an unwanted change?
Like all others after completing the POST the Mac normally emits a ‘gong’ sound.
I need to be able to mute this sound on demand in the small hours of the morning to avoid complaints of excess noise, but the present issue has placed this on the back burner.
Under Snow Leopard I was able to deploy an Application which created a System Preference. In turn this enabled the sound to be muted. However this was not ideal because it required accessing System preferences before shutting down, or leaving the sound semi permanently muted.
After searching for and testing various actions apparently designed to achieve this objective nothing seems capable of the task. Methods involving the use of Terminal were avoided as that is not my bag.
If it had functioned hitting the Keyboard Mute Key on start-up would have been ideal, if this does work for anyone please tell me.
Whilst it is accepted that the default for the POST Sound should be for it to be heard. Unfortunately Apple choose to be deaf, dumb and blind to the need for a User selected method of silencing the POST Sound that reverts to default after a single use.
Having temporarily given up on silencing solutions and made a decision to smother the sound with a duvet, or something similar for early morning start-ups, by an eerie coincidence the start-up sound ceased. The first reaction was ‘success’, but this was short lived when considering the need to access the Start-Up Management Screen and other start-up choices.
    Exceptions to the above:
    a. Re-booting from my Snow Leopard HDD, used to run items which do not work under Lion, back to Snow Leopard the POST Sound is audible.
When restarting from Lion and booting into Snow Leopard the POST Sound is not audible.
    b. The first boot into Lion after using Snow Leopard the POST Sound is audible, but subsequent start-ups remain silent.
The following scenarios describe the attempts to return the Mac to normal operation:
    1. System Preferences > Sound, this was checked to ensure that none of the settings blocked the sound.
    2. Disk Utility was used to Repair the Start-Up HDD and also to Repair Disk Permissions.
    3. Resetting the NVRAM was carried out several times, I have read that this could be beneficially allowed to repeat the POST Sound 4 times, so this was tried as well as the Apple directions which advise holding the keys until 2 sounds have been heard.
    4. The Logic Board Battery was replaced.
    5. Apple Hardware Test was run and returned the result [words to the effect] ‘No Trouble Found’.
The above seems to indicate that the issue is with Lion?
At this point I have run out of options other than to perform a clean install and hope that the issue will be resolved.
Although I have adequate back ups returning to a position with all the Applications set up properly is going to be a major task.
Any suggestions or ideas to move forward with this problem will be gratefully received.

Just to round off the above scenarios and answer the outstanding items as far as possible.
The above taught me a little about ‘Migration Assistant’, I have never previously had any occasion to use it.
By setting it up as near, IIRC, the settings used after re-installing Lion were similar to this:
Most Applications were fully functional without any additional action being required.
Several Applications required their Serial Number-Registration Code-or whatever, to be inserted MS Office 2011 required ‘Activation’.
Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection, allowed Acrobat to open but reported that it needed one of the other related Applications to be opened.
After a similar experience with Photoshop Adobe decided that it was necessary to uninstall and reinstall CS3 to regain usability.
Inserting CS3 #1 Disc and hitting ‘Install’ revealed the true requirement.
    CS3 needed to be ‘Repaired’.
The uside of this was that almost immediately an estimate of Time for the process was given, and this started to count down second by second, and when completed there was no need to enter the Serial Number.
Apple could learn something about ‘Estimating Time to Completion’ from Adobe.
The downside was that this, effectively, new installation required almost 20 updates to be applied amounting to about 750Mb, unfortunately this took as long as most Applications would take to install several Gbs and even this resulted in some failures for some component parts. CS3 runs as a damaged product in Lion.
Adobe seem to need to learn more about working with Mac?
Regarding the ‘outstanding irritations’ mentioned previously:
Please ensure that you read to the end of this post, I am not trying to ‘sell’ anything by offering these links.
Searching for an Application to mute the POST Sound I visited:
    http://alphaomega.software.free.fr/downloads.php
This developer produces ‘Start-Up Chime Stopper’, more info on this can be found here:
    http://alphaomega.software.free.fr/startupchimestopper/Documentation/Documentati on.html
After eMailing the Developer and receiving, IMO possibly related to language difference, an open ended reply I took advantage of the Free Download in order to trial this poduct.
It was found to be functional but it does not seem to be capable of applying a Mute to the POST Sound for a single event, other than by User intervention.
In fairness I may have missed something but believe all combinations of the settings were tested.
The upshot was that I removed [read trashed] this Application.
Having removed the Application on restarting the Mac, horror of horrors’, the POST Sound was absent.
A quick dive into System Preferences > Sound > Output tab > Internal Speakers, revealed that the setting had been left on Mute.
With the Mute checkmark removed normal service was resumed.
Also I subsequently found that altering the Volume Level reduced the POST Sound to an acceptable level.
In my earlier searches for a solution to Mute the POST Sound the System Preferences > Sound settings had been set every conceivable which-way.
No solution was found and this lead me to criticise Apple for not providing a means to turn off this sound when there was a real need to do so.
There seem to be a few possible explanations for what is happening now:
    1. I failed, earlier, to test EVERY possible Sound Setting.
    2. My recollection of events is completely off the rails and brain fade has set in.
    3. My Sound Settings were corrupt and repaired by the reinstallation of Lion, I did not retest prior to the trial of Start-Up Chime Stopper.
    4. Installing and removing Start-Up Chime Stopper has altered something within Sound.
Please can anyone help to confirm any of these items?
In the meantime I am a happy chappie, I have to listen hard for the POST Sound but have the comfort of knowing it is there.
That is until Apple spoil it again?

  • Touchsmart 600-1037d will not recognize Touchscreen after fresh install Win 8 Pro 64-bit

Would appreciate anyone's help in how to resolve my issue with my HP Touchsmart 600-1037d.  I have completed a fresh installation of Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, and the Touchscreen feature is not activated.  Unlike some of the other similarly related enquiries, I do not receive an error message in my Device Drivers that recognizes the Touchscreen and not have the correct drivers.  In my case, the OS simply does not recognize the Touchsreen features that were functional in Windows 7 64-bit.  I have tried using the NextWindow drivers from HP, Windows Update Catalog, and NextWindow websites, however none seem to work.  I have even tried a type of forced "installation" by right-clicking the relevant .inf files - with no success.

    Dear frrw,
Thank you for your reply and comments.  After reading through the pages from the link you provided, perhaps I am missing something.  I have successfully installed Windows 8 64-bit on my HP Touchsmart 600-1037d, which uses the nVidia GT230 adapter.  I have also successfully installed the latest nVidia Win8 drivers for the GT230.  All the features on the Touchsmart 600-1037d work fine - except there is no Touchscreen function.  In Device Manager there is no notification that there is a driver missing, ie Device Manager does not recognize that there is a Touchscreen device that I would need to update.  In Win7 64-bit the Touchscreen function worked fine.
I have tried forcing the installation of the following drivers with no success, ie Win8 64-bit simply does not recognize that there is a Touchscreen device to install.
    - NextWindow drivers from HP
    - Windows Update Catalog drivers for the NextWindow 1950
    - NextWindow website
    Would appreciate any further advice.

  • [SOLVED]Sound Card No longer detected after pulseadio install

I recently installed pulseaudio and after the install my /var/lib/alsa/asound.state file was deleted or moved, anyhow now neither pulseaudio or alsa recognize my sound card. Is there a way to regenerate the original asound.state file ? i've already tried alsactl store but alsa apprently can't find my sound card anymore.
SOLVED: apparently the modules for the sound card were unloaded I don't know what caused it but it was sure annoying
    SOLUTION:
    modprobe snd-hda-intel ; modprobe snd-pcm-oss ; modprobe snd-mixer-oss ; modprobe snd-seq-ossa
Of course the modules you load will depend on your particular system, I happen to be using the Acer Aspire One netbook so I had an intel hda audio card
    Acer Aspire One
    120Gb HDD
    1024mb ram
    Intel N720 1.6ghz

yes i assumed it would be necessary for integration, am i to understand this was the root of the problem ?
ok so i was reading a gentoo forums post and decided to follow some of the fact finding there and came to some good information.
sound card is not found in /proc/asound/cards
sound card isn't in /dev/ anywhere
so it seems like it just up and disappeared

  • Ath5k making wireless not functional on Windows?

I used to have Windows XP and my AR5007EG worked just fine.
Then, I uninstalled it, stayed just with Arch for some time and now I am dual booting xp and arch.
The thing is: wireless is not functional anymore on XP; it's recognized and the light is blinking but it doesn't find any network (and there's something like ~30 visible from here).
I'm pretty sure this is not a driver problem, since I tried with ~10 driver versions ranging from 5.6 (2007) to 10.0 (2012) and all of them got the same result. And, well, the device used to work with this same version of Windows, with one of those drivers, and it's definitely not broken, since it works under Linux.
I was wondering if it is possible that the ath5k driver on arch is leaving my device on some kind of state/mode, such that it doesn't work properly on Windows?
I'm asking since AFAIK this device doesn't have an open specification and so I really don't trust this ath5k driver, since it was probably done by reverse engineering, I suppose.

Highly doubt it.  If you really want to test, you can power down and either remove the battery if a laptop, or unplug if a desktop.  Wait 60 sec or so and boot into windows to see if functional.

  • Tecra M10 - Sound not working on Windows XP SP3

TECRA M10 Sound not working with Win XP SP3
    1. Drivers are installed from the toshiba web site.
    2. Chipset drivers and sound drivers were reinstalled no luck,
    3. Not Muted FN+Esc
    4. Device Manger All drivers ok

    Hi
If I understand you right all devices listed properly in device manager and you dont have yellow exclamation marks?!
Normally for high definition sound cards you need two patches from Microsoft:
    KB835221 and KB888111.
Normally these patches are integrated in SP3 but this only works if you install the sound driver after SP3. So if you have an older version of XP without SP3 you must update to SP3 first and then install the display driver.
So in your case you should remove the current sound driver and restart the notebook. Then use CCleaner to clean the registry and system folders. Restart the notebook again. Then download and install the newest sound driver from the Realtek Hompage.
    Bye

  • [SOLVED] After Arch install, non-root wont boot into Gnome

First off I searched for around an hour but couldn't find an answer to this so somewhat gave up.
Coming from Ubuntu and very dissatisfied with performance I am very excited for Arch.
I followed the newb guide to a T, everything went smooth as butter.
after the guide was finished I installed Gnome3

Went perfect.  I try and login to the user I created while going thru the guide and instantly boot into the basic X environment?
So I thought perhaps I should try adduser after I installed Gnome3 and now when logging into that new user, the screen goes black for 2sec then

I'm the only person that needs to save the Titles?
I do it sometimes when I want to reuse a title in more than one project.
When you export out the Titles, what happens then?
Only then does it become a separate file, suitable for importing into other projects.  This is NOT necessary to export your finished video,  it's only necessary if you want to reuse the title in other projects.
The Titles are photos and scrolling words, that are used together as a memoriam in different projects. So having the Titles as separate files on the HD is pretty much essential.
That's more than just a title, which in PP usually contains only text.  For something this complex, it might be better to create a base project or template that contains all the elements you want to reuse, and then start new projects with that, renaming to a new project name immediately after opening the template.
For example, I have an HD Wedding project that contains all my sequences, graphics and titles ready to go in organized bins.  I start by opening that project and do a Save As... using the couple's last name.  That way each new project starts with the elements I need and I don't have to recreate them all the time.
