Sound of Death?

Okay so my brother went to connect his iPod to his iMac G5. Once he connected it all he got was the apple logo with a black backround for 10 minutes. I then reset it and i herd a De-Do-De sound. Since then it has remained in a white screen. At first there is some hard drive activity but then after about a minute it stops and does nothing.
I Have tried to plug it into the computer and when i do that i get the sound it usaully makes when connected but then it has not activity. I tried to restore it but it does not even see it. So now i am stuck here wuth a White iPod with a White Screen. Is it dead?

You can do this yourself with the right software. Here are two that I have used:

Ok, so i've got all the problems you all got. Of course I did all the usual stuff like reload and reformat and defragment and insure I had the latest drivers, IRQ checks ya da ya da ya da......
I came across something while I was trying to play counter strike source. I was also running teamspeak at the same time. I experienced stuttering and choppyness on teamspeak AND CS:Source. So I went into my TS settings and changed my sound driver from "Wave" to "Direct Sound" and BINGO, no more problems with TS, or CS:Source. However, I still get stuttering with Half life 2 and doom 3.
Maybe "Direct Sound" is a key to getting this problem fixed once and for all. Anywho, this is an idea coming from someone with no tech experience so please disregard if your an asswipe bent on only flaming people because you think you know it all.
I hope in time this problem can be fixed once and for all.

() Download from Creative Labs (US) site: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/ the following files:
    (a) Creative Sound Blaster USB Series Windows Vista Driver .00.0060 - USBVS_PCDRV_LB__00_0060.exe (from the Vista section)
    (b) VidCap for Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor .00.000 - A2VX_PCVDE_L9__00_000.exe (from the WinXP section)
    (2) Use WinZip or WinRAR to open the file (b) and extract the folders \DrvInst and \Vidcap into your Vista Downloads folder.
    (3) Connect the Video Editor to the power supply and a video source; connect the USB cable to your PC. Ignore the "Found NEw Hardware" dialog that pops up.
    (4) Doubleclick on file (a) to install the Creative Sound Blaster USB Series Windows Vista Driver, and follow prompts as required; accept all defaults. After install is complete, let the PC reboot.
    (5) After rebooting, in the "Found New Hardware" dialog that appears, select the options to search for a driver, don't go online to search, browse for a driver and point the search at the \DrvInst folder you extracted in (2) above. The USB video driver will be installed from the \DrvInst\Video\Driver\Win2k.
    (6) After the video driver is installed, doubleclick on the Setup.exe file in the \Vidcap folder you extracted in (2) above to install the Vidcap application.
    (7) Setup the options in Vidcap, and run a test recording.

  • Does it sound like death is imminent?

My G4 Powerbook has been such a great companion for three-and-a-half years, and I'm single, so bear with me when I call it by its given name: Barry.
Okay, so Barry had basically been a workaholic for the first two-and-a-half years we were together, giving me no cause to worry until he suffered a severe optical drive attack about nine months ago. The good folks at AppleCare performed a transplant, and when they finally released Barry weeks later, they told me they had not only transplanted his optical drive, but some other vital organs, as well. (Hard drive? Logic board? Don't recall.) I was told that Barry was, for all intents and purposes, A New Man. Barry went back to work full-time immediately and seemed to be quite well until a few weeks ago, when I noticed he was having sleep issues. While he had always been one of those perky types who always wake up in a good mood, ready to go, I found myself struggling to rouse him from his slumber and even had to poke him right in his on-off button several times to wake him. One morning in early July, Barry simply fell into a coma and, totally unresponsive, was rushed to the Genius Bar. Unfortunately, he no longer has health insurance, since his AppleCare ran out back in February. After spending close to an hour in the waiting room, we finally got to see the Genius, who performed an emergency operation which was some kind of reset -- PRAM maybe? Barry was now wide awake but, I'm sad to say, his sleep issues have again returned, and he seems to have difficulty remembering names, which is quite distressing; for example, I'll be working on a document called PizzaPie and then, after I open it and type a bit, I'll save it and notice the name has changed to that of another document with a string of numbers and some symbols added; so instead of PIzzaPie it might say ParisTrip56#738291u3. He's also starting humming a bit -- like a mild fan noise -- which is strange for someone who, until this point, did not appear musically inclined (although he remembers over a thousand songs!). So any ideas on what Barry's problem or prognosis could be? What might be the cost of getting him proper treatment (if needed)?
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Mrs. Barry Powerbook

I would begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back with what you find out.

PS: Don't worry too much. I think Barry will be fine

  • Awful beeping sound on boot

I formated the entire hard drive and installed Ubuntu 14.04 in a Macbook 5.2.
Ubuntu boots decently fast, however there is a disconcerting garbled image on screen:
After that Ubuntu runs fairly well but once I restart the machine a long beeping sound takes place instead of booting, the laptop remains with power but nothing will happen after that.
I have to manually shut down the laptop and restart, Ubuntu will load but the next restart will have the same beeping sound of death.
I already flushed the PRAM with hotkeys and by removed the Battery several times.
Nothing has fixed this problem, and I'm unable to install Mac OS X to troubleshoot it.
Note: This problem appeared right after installing Ubuntu for the first time, I already formated and installed several other Distros and the beep remains.
What can I do to fix this?

Perhaps it is because Apple make the kernel drivers that 'help' users by beeping when the hardware is having issues? It's still unclear to me if the sound is coming from the speakers, connect some headphones to see if that redirects the sound.
Other OS's don't always access every hardware feature so they may not make the same checks as Apple software.
I wonder if the display has a sensor for reading the backlight output. When it is found to be off the OS may ring the alarm?
What point does the beeping begin?
If you can get into verbose mode you may be able to see some error messages. This is easiest if you have a bootable OS X disk. The nvram command can also be used to set the verbose mode in the settings to force verbose mode on every boot - but it can be difficult to do if you have no active OS X installation available.

It seems odd to me that the boot picker seems to show a fully illuminated screen, perhaps that is driving the inverter differently? Is that always correctly displayed?
Please provide some info on the other equipment you have access to, it could help you jump into some testing instead of discussing hypothetical problems.
NOTE: This is speculation on my part, Apple engineers will have access to troubleshooting manuals - do you have access to an Apple store or service center - is that an option for you? They may be able to say categorically what the sound means if you are lucky.

  • MBP 2012 - frozen screen with lines & beeps

    Hello all,
A couple of days ago, my 2012 MBP froze and I simply restarted it with no problem. I double-checked with Onyx that said my volume needed repairs; I ran Command + Recovery's DIsk Utility but when I booted back up, Onyx still said that my volume needed repairs. Since the computer was running fine, I thought that perhaps Onyx was being outdated for Mavericks. However, the other night a mass of little greenish lines appeared in little fields over the screen as it stood frozen. Normally if this ever happens, I simply restart it, but this time the screen turned to black and my MBP started emitting what sounded like beep sounds of death. I think about 3 or so were emitted, but I was so panicked that I just pressed the power button, to which the system booted up again. It seems as though there's no problem once again, but I ran Onyx and it says again that my volume needs to be repaired. Before I went to bed last night, I did a PRAM reset and I'm using it now for the first time since then and there doesn't SEEM to be a problem, but a sense of worrying isn't gonna go anytime soon about it (understandably so). My Apple limited warranty is going to expire soon, so I figure that I should take advantage of it to use it for any problem it might, because right now I'm in the midst of finals and papers and I need my MBP to work. Any suggestions or insight as to what's happening? I have to make an appointment with a local Authorized Mac repair shop in my town and I won't be able to go in to see them until Wednesday, so any advice or anything you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance for all of your help and responses!

FIRST thing to do is to backup your data to an external hard drive. You may lose everything otherwise.
After that is done, run the Apple Hardware Test. Follow this page carefully and if you do not understand anything ask here again.

  • Load Cycle Count over 7500 in just 5 days on new DV4 series notebook

    Hi,
I'm really concerned about my new laptop i bought just a week ago (dv4-4172); it happens that the disk is making a lot of noise just like the infamous 'clicking sound of death' and reporting up to now, more than 7500 load cycles in just 5 days of operation and also, 2 errors in the CRC of the UDMA. Since my hard disk (Hitachi HTS547564A9E384 640.1 GB) was behaving like that i ran several test on the disk (HP's BIOS run-tests, HDD Tune, smartctl (short and the long one), etc.) but i'm not getting a single read-write error, that is, the system hasn't any functional/operational problem, yet. Furthermore, my disk's lifespan is 600000 load cycles and i'm getting about 1500 in just a day, you don't even need a calculator to realize the harddisk won't last more than 1.5 years. The constant clicking of the disk is also getting on my nerves too .
The question here is, is it normal for this hard disk to have an average count of 1500 load/unload in a day (i.e. 1 cycle every minute) or is my disk the only one with suicidal attitudes?. My last notebook's harddisk (Seagate) didn't get more than 100k cycles in 2 years of operation, that's why i'm concerned...
Naturally, hdparm solves the issue, but (partially or permanently) disabling my harddisk's APM is even more suicidal than my disk's actual attitude, and by the way, you need some technical skillset to change those values (I'm a linux sysadmin, so i knew how to solve that specific issue), why is the default configuration set as this? or is HP expecting every single user to know how to modify the APM or, if you don't, to have a seat while watching your hard disk self destruction take place.
    Thanks in advance.
    - melvin
FYI, the problem is agnostic of which operating system i use, even in the POST stage the harddisk starts with that annoying clicking (and its corresponding cycle count increased), and yeah, i've updated all my drivers and followed every suggestion hp support assistant gave to me, like the nice guy i am.
    This question was solved.

    Hello uncle_sam,
You’re having a problem with the hard drive.
The drive is not supposed to be making any noise.
Since the unit is still new I’d call HP and have them send you a new HDD.
Here is a link to the phone number.
Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
Let me know how everything goes.

  • Built In Enthernet Cable not Plugged in

Hey folk I need your help in finding the solution to having Tiger recognise that I do have a cable plugged into the ethernet port.
I have ain Network Prefernce a red dot next to built in ethernet and is gives me a message that it isn't plugged in but is obviously is. Heres what I;ve tried
    Hardware
Test says the port is recognised just nothing is plugged into it.
    New cables
plenty Cat 5 or cat 6
    New locations
I've tried it at home in the office in another country
    different routers
I've tried different brands and direct into the modem
    PMU reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431#faq6
Maybe I've done this wrong but the forums say to reset the Power Menangement Unit on the ibook G4 hold and release the Shift, Control, option and power button.
    Forums
I've tried many different forums and their solutions are complicated to say the least and most aren't solutions
one thing I've noticed is that this problem is not unique to me and hence I've come to your strong minds for support can you help?

    Hello Richard
The Port Looks healthy all the pins are straight and at the same level. I also had it inspected by someone else they confirm. The contacts I clean today again with air so the physical port I am happy is ok.
What I can say though is that along with the Built in ethernet port not working the Internal Modem is not seen either and one of the speakers doesn't work also when you plug headphones into the earphone slot the remaining working speaker doesn't mute/go off it gets louder.
Firewire, USB and External Monitor port work fine however.
I have diabled Airport while troubleshooting in the past as well as today when trying to configure the Built In Ethernet manually. This did not help
I am not sure what you mean here but in booting from another system on an external hard drive but I have not used another mac connected to or an external hard drive while trying to make the port work.
I have reinstalled Tiger once since having this issue for matters unrelated to this one and I still do not have the ethernet port working.
Does it sound like death to the port?

  • Raid1 Failed with brand new disk

I got some Newer-Technology (ministacks) with 1TB WD Green drives and they're about 2 months old.
I launched Disk Utility to see why the disk was taking time to mount and it shows one of the disks has failed. This is rare from new WD drives.
I listened to the disk and it sounds fine, no screeching/clunking/strange sounds of death.
Is there a non-destructive way to break the raid so I can run a disk integrity check on the drive?
Or can I click on Rebuild without destroying my data?

Update, the disks work fine independently of each other... but when paired up, that's when everything goes to pieces.
The SMART status check shows both disks are fine.
So, to confirm, if I click on rebuild, it will just fix the integrity of the RAID and restore the full Raid1 right?

  • Applications Hanging (inc Finder), and repeatedly force quitting! (kernel?)

    Hey all,
So I've been having a heck of a time the past few days.
Recently (my Powerbook is about 9 months old), applications started hanging, and I had to forcequit them. Then, I had to do a hard reboot, and when the computer restarted, I got a grey screen with a blinking queston mark / finder face. After restarting twice (or later, if I just left it for a few minutes), the computer would restart normally and go into the regular OS X page.
I've run all the regular maintanence procedures, and I've repaired all disk permissions. I've run McAfee Virex (and it doesn't find any viruses, but stops when its access is denied, I'll run this again when I got to sleep). I've also run TechTool Deluxe, which found no errors for any hardware components (even when I did a "surface scan")
When I opened console and opened the console log, I wasn't able to get much useful information. But the Systems logs was more helpful, and I saw that when my Safari crashed, it occurred at the same time as a kernel [0] error. Then console crashed, and just before it did, it recorded the same error!
However, after those first few crashes, when a few more occurred in different applications, the same message did not appear again. Then when sarari crashed again, I got an "extended attributes" message.
    Help!
Here is a copy of the systems log just at the 2:07 "kernel" crash with Safari, and the 2:12 console crash. Then again with the "extended attributes" Safari crash.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help at all with this!

    Hey Dr. Smoke,
I have updated Adobe, thanks for that, no problems with that anymore.
So, when I ran the command line "df -a", it gave me "/" under "mounted on," which I suppose is because it's my start up drive.
When I went through the booting from a Mac OS X 10.4.7 disk, and ran disk utilities, it found a "minor error" about a "bitmap" and then found no errors every time after that. When I booted in Safe Mode, and ran disk utility, it found no errors. When I booted in normal OS X, and ran disk utility, it found no errors. But, after a little while, the applications, especially safari and mail started hanging again!
So, then I opened Tech Tool Deluxe 3.0, and ran its complete check on the processor, RAM, Video Ram, USB, Diagnostic, Rezero Unit, and Format Check. No problems, and everything completed successfully. Then I ran the "surface Scan" and it similarly found no problems. I haven't run Random Read, Random Write, Linear Read, Linear Write, Seek, Read Buffer, or Write Buffer, should I?
The hanging continued, so I completed your Steps 1 - 2 in "resolving Disk, Permsision, and Cache Corruption," everything turned out fine. The S.M.A.R.T. status is still "verified" too. I am about to run Yasu to reset my cache, and I will report back with the results.
    When I googgled by specific error "kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O Error," I found a few semi-helpful results:
    http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Board=tiger&Number=742835
    http://forums.macnn.com/archive/index.php/t-269118.html
Both experienced similar problems, specifically with all the utilities not reporting any problems, yet the hanging continuing. HOWEVER, they both report hearing the clicking sound of death of their hard drive desperately trying to read blocks on the hard drive, whereas I am NOT hearing that noise.
The first thread's user was told that the hard drive was about to die, and to do a 'surface scan" which would show the error. I ran that and couldn't discover any erros in any of the blocks.
The second thread's user had a problem with a Virtual PC disk, and eventually had to format the HD and do a clean reinstall of OS X. But still thought that the HD was dying.
One poster (9-11-2005 1:47 PM) in the second thread mentioned that they had a similar problem that was resolved using Disk Warrior, which found errors in blocks that other programs, including TechTool, couldn't find. Should I buy Disk Warrior to fix this, even though TechTool Deluxe 3.0 isn't showing problems?
Okay, that's a lot of information. Hopefully it's helpful in figuring out what the heck is wrong with my powerbook.
    Thanks!
PS your book sounds amazing! Thanks for your help!

  • Windows keep getting pushed back

OK, so now this is driving me insane.
This has happened both to the iMac and now Mac Pro. I will be typing and all of sudden hear the dreaded sound of death...well the dong anyway that informs me I'm not longer typing the email and instead, typing into nothing. The application/window/email is still open, but it's no longer the top window. A mystery window, and an invisible one, has come in front. I have to click the window again to bring it to the top and then type, until it happens again...
I know it isn't an application as I've just reinstalled everything fromn scratch by wiping the hard drive. And one of the first things it did when typing in the newly installed Safari was this exact problem...
Any ideas? I am completely lost as to what to do?
PS - when we wiped the iMac and did a re-install, everything now works fine. But not with the Mac Pro...?

Hmm as luck would have it, seems to be related to a dropping internet connection. I disconnected the ethernet and set WiFi only and low and behold...it seems to have solved it.........

  • Lost sound devices now blue screen of death when updating creative drivers.

I have an XPS with windows 7, dont k now what the sound card is, I have factory installed software for Creative X something extreme, and Realtex.
Now I had been trying to get sound via an optical cable to an AV amp with no success. I had tried disabling and re enabling sound devices, then I tried updating the drivers, realtex was ok but the Creative drivers caused the blue screen of death with the message IRQL Not less or equal"
I tried all options in device manager including rollback, every time I try anything I get that blue screen of death, whats more, in "Sounds" in the control panel, I have lost two of my sound device options that do not appear even with "show hidden devices" so I now have no sound.

    Hi Nambo,
Device manager should list the exact hardware in your desktop. But normally, integrated audio jacks will appear on the same backplane as other motherboard components, while an add-on card will have its jacks in an expansion slot. So you should know whether you have integrated or add-on.

  • White screen of death with clicking sound?

i got a White screen of death with clicking sound after crashing in boot camp with winXP, i try to put in the macbook installed disc, but nothing happened & i cannot reject the CD, is it the hard drive problem & how can i fix it? do i have to replace the hard drive....

It appears that Apple knows about the problem now: http://venturebeat.com/2010/11/04/apple-admits-to-macbook-air-screen-problems-in ternally-software-fix-coming/
The only problem is that I ended up buying a new Macbook Air and Apple is taking back my other one. The wanted me to send it in and have them replace it, but it's my only computer and I can't be without it for a week. It would suck if they come up with a software fix and replacing it was not necessary.
Support was very helpful and worked with me for a few days trying to isolate the issue. I don't get the horizontal lines (I get a solid grey, white, black or blue screen), so I am not sure if my issue is the same as the one that Apple is recognizing.

    hi everyone,
i am running a web app on tomcat 6. There is this specfic feature in the web application where i need to parse data from a csv file and programatically place data in an excel file.

}the problem is a quite outOfMemory error cause in the while loop.
Its clear that the amout of data (aprox. 26000 rows of data - about 100megs of data) is the problem. My question is any of you can see anything i could optimize the loop with so that the app wont burst ;-)
    yours,
    Jazz

the problem is a quite outOfMemory error cause in the
    while loop.
Its clear that the amout of data (aprox. 26000 rows
of data - about 100megs of data) is the problem. I have a great problem understanding why you need to process 100megs of data in a web application since you are unlikely to be shipping the 100megs to the client for display. I can only see some sense to it if your web application is offering a conversion service but even then you will still have an upload of 100megs followed by a download of 100megs. If you are offering a conversion service then because of the memory requirement you will probably be limited to just one client at a time anyway.
Not what you would call a sound scalable solution to a problem.

It's happened in a few other games just temporarily or in certain situations on both of the X-FI xtreme music card's I've had. I never have the same computer for more than 6 months as parts are switched out with upgrades on a monthly basis and on numerous Nvidia chipsets from nforce 3/4 and nforce 570 it always happens. I format for one reason or another every 3 weeks or so and every time I always download the latest graphics/chipset/sound/anything drivers for every piece of hardware I have so I've had this problem across at least the last 20 versions of drivers for everything I have so I know for a fact it's these **bleep** sound cards. On every single board I've had since experiencing this problem for the first time I even tried every pci slot on my motherboard every time with no success fixing the issue.
For those interested my current setup which is soon to be once again 00% overhauled (which I'm sure won't fix the problem) is an AMD 5200+, Abit KN9 Ultra nforce 570 motherboard, 8800 GTS and X-FI xtreme music.
Is there any fix for this or is creative aware of this problem and allow us to send them the card for one without this defect? I know I've read in the past other people were having the issue but it didn't bother me enough at the time to do anything about it.Message Edited by arfett on 08-29-20070:44 PM

It does it in game mode or entertainment mode. In 2 weeks I'll be on an Asus P5K motherboard with a Q6600. I know deep down I'm still going to have this problem, but part of me has hope it just might do the trick.
After some further troubleshooting I found a way to get rid of the screech in Extraction Point. If the music slider is set about 5 or 6 notches from maximum it won't screech. any higher or lower and it screeches. In conflict Global Storm it was caused by turning the music completely off so it seems it's some form of incompatibility with music volume in games. It's done it on both of my xtreme music's (I bought a 2nd one because I thought I must have just bought a defecti've card) so I think I might try one of those Auzentech X-FI cards and see if I have any better luck since they actually put quality components around the X-FI chip, unlike Creative.Message Edited by arfett on 08-3-200703:4 AM

  • Death to the Start-Up sound!

How do I turn off the start-up sound?

The chime is the equivalent of BIOS beep codes you hear on standard X86 hardware that uses BIOS. When things are wrong, you will hear different tones. The chime just indicates that all standard tests have passed.
Most Macs are designed to "sleep" instead of be shut down entirely, and by that line of logic you aren't constantly powering the unit up and down, so the chime won't be heard as often as it otherwise would be.
However, the chime CAN be silenced without additional software by holding down the mute key on a standard Apple keyboard, or the F3-key I believe it is, on Apple notebooks while pressing the power button. This setting is not saved, but per-session, so you'll have to do it everytime you power-on if you never want to hear the chime again.
