Sound on iMac

I'm fairly dissatisfied with the sound level of my iMac. I tried to hook up my Apple Pro Speakers from my G4 iMac and the audio jack in the back is not compatible. I went to the Apple Store and they have a Belkin adapter but it doesn't look like it has the right configuration either. I contacted MacMall and they told me I needed a $125 Griffin amp. Yeah right... that makes a lot of sense. Spend $125 to make a $25 set of speakers work. Does anyone know of an adapter that goes from the G4 “mini-jack” to the 3.5mm G5 jack?

On further investigation, it appears as though Duane is at least partially correct if not completely correct.
Here's an article on Apple's site that details the speaker configuration of the iMac G4:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58764
But, that doesn't mean all hope is lost. The iMac G5 (at least the rev. A and B models) have both analog and digital audio outputs. They share the same jack.
So, provided the connection is compatible, then it just may work.
I've never seen a digital audio connector, so I don't know if it is physically the same as a analog connector or not. If it is the same, then it just may work.
But, it may not. Here is an excerpt from the Apple document about the iMac G5:
This headphone/line output features a D/A converter that supports 24-bit, 32-96 kHz audio for both digital optical audio and analog audio output. For analog headphone / line output a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug should be used. For digital audio, a fiber optic cable with 3.5mm plastic or nylon optical plug should be used.
This comes from the document at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86813
So, you might be best to do some additional research before jumping on the first idea I mentioned last night.
Sorry to have been wrong. It looked quite simple at the beginning.
If you are just wanting a cheap good set of speakers, I have been very pleased with the Altec Lansing speakers from Wal-Mart. They only cost about $10 to $15. I'm using them on my PC at the moment, but I was using them on my Mac Mini until I got the my new iMac G5.
For the iMac, I am just using the built-in speakers. Their adequate for my needs. All my fancy audio / recording studio software is on the PC downstairs.

  • Disable sound on imac in target display mode

Have a question about disabling the sound.
I have a MacBook Pro connected to my iMac by the thunderbolt cable. I enable the target display mode on iMac with a script for disabling some configurations on iMac ( including the bluetooth for mouse and keyboard steal ).
I set the sound output in the MacBook Pro to the iMac DisplayPort.
The problem is now i have both outputs on iMac speakers. i want to disable all sound from iMac but keep the output from MacBook Pro on iMac speakers.
    Is this posible?
    Thanks.

Humm... I might go TosLink between the iMac and the FastTrack and then run the USB connection to the MacBook Pro when your using it in Target Display Mode.
Or vise Versa, leave the USB connected to the iMac and use the TosLink connection for the MacBook Pro.

If you have Headphones, Buds or a Speaker System plugged into the Audio Output (headphone) jack?
Unplug them and reset your internal speaker volume, then reconnect your Headphone, Buds or Speaker System.

  • What keeps making the cyclical noise while in sleep.  Sounds like iMac is loading a graphic or different screen.

What keeps making the cyclical noise while in sleep?  Sounds like iMac is loading a graphic or different screen.  Does it periodically while in sleep mode.  How do I correct this?  Just started doing it in the last few months.

I finally figured out how to fix this.  First I reviewed "Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep of stay in sleep mode."  I noted the bullet:  "Do you have any other external USB or Firewire devices connected?"  I have an CP685AVR for a UPS for my Mac.  I replaced the battery a few months ago.  I also hooked up Apple's 'Energy Saver' power management software to the CP685AVR using the USB connection.  I disconnected it, and that solved the problem.  I still have the UPS and battery back-up; I just can't "monitor" the battery.  What's to monitor?  It always said the battery was 100% charged even right up to the time the previous battery failed.  Thanks for listening, uh... reading.

Just to elaborate further; if the Windows OS has been previously installed, go to the bootcamp assistant in OSX (found in applications/utilities). There you will have the option to burn a disk or  download the needed drivers to a USB flash drive. After getting the necessary files downloaded/burned proceed and start your Windows partition, run the installer from the disc. This should solve the problem.

  • Surround sound for iMac

I have Creative Inspire 4.1 4400 (http://static.clickbd.com/global/classified/item_img/895644_0_original.jpg), and I would like to get surround sound from speakers when I watch movies. I have done some research for some time, and I have no idea how to connect this to iMac.
The speaker system has green and black cables (3.5mm). For now, I only have green cable connected to iMac, and I somehow get sound from all 4 speakers + subwoofer. But it is not a true surround effect since the sounds from rear speakers are the same as front speakers.
This is what the speaker system looks like: http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/995/dsc02837n.jpg
So, what do I need to get to have surround sound on iMac?

Here is the video of the set-up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKA7nbdyAaQ&feature=youtu.be
Again, this is what my speaker is: http://static.clickbd.com/global/classified/item_img/895644_0_original.jpg
Here is the picture of the back of the subwoofer:http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/995/dsc02837n.jpg
The green cable is for front speakers while black cable is for rear speakers. It doesn't have a separate cable for subwoofer.
After doing some research, I've read that this speaker system is "not compatible with optical SPDIF sound cards." Is that related to the sound card I bought?

  • No sound on iMac in target display mode

    I've got a late 2009 27" iMac running Yosemite.
When I connect either my MBP (Yosemite, late 2011 15") or my wife's rMBP (Mavericks, 2012 15") to the iMac using a mini Display Port cable and switch the iMac to target display mode using Cmd-F2, sound no longer works.
Previously, when the iMac was running Mavericks, the laptops would route sound to the iMac via HDMI audio (I think) on the mDP cable and sound would be output via the iMac speakers or headphones attached to the iMac. Since upgrading the iMac to Yosemite, sound no longer plays.
This occurs regardless of the laptop OS, Mavericks or Yosemite. The sound icon on the laptop get greyed out and shows that it is going to the "Color LCD" but no sound is output via the iMac.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • IMac high pitch sound (4th iMac in a week). Any improvements?

    Hello,
I know there is a lot of forum posts on the internet about this, as I've spent about two days reading them (primarily from my iPhone as my screen sound drives me up the wall).
As some people have experienced, this is a result of changing the brightness (0% and 100% are fine, anything in between emits a high pitched whine...some people believe this is a result of the capacitors vibrating at around 15-16Hz, which would make sense).
I have actually gone through four separate iMacs in a week to try to fix this problem (and two being upgrades over the model I had in hopes of a different production run). I have checked the serial number on all of them and they were all build between September and October, at various weeks between, mostly within a 4 week window.
I am beyond my wits with this issue and not sure what to do now. I have spent nearly 20 hours setting up four separate computers only to format them to take back in a chance I am lucky enough to get one that I can dim at night time without getting a ringing sound in my ear.
I was wondering if anyone else who has experienced this issue has come across a solution, or at least a replacement that has worked? I am debating to go for number five, but honestly, I am almost too tired of boxing and driving, boxing and drive (rinse and repeat). (I even tried three separate stores in hopes to get a different production week that didn't have this issue).
Looking forward to your responses, and any guidance. I love this machine and I wish it just stopped having these issues so I could do some work...
    Setup(s):
    First two:
    21.5" iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core i3
    4GB RAM
    500GB HDD
    ATI Radeon 4670
    Next two:
    21.5" iMac 3.2GHz Intel Core i3
    4GB RAM
    1TB HDD
    ATI Radeon 5670
    Thank you,
    Adam

I started having this problem yesterday on my late 2009 iMac 27 inch after I changed my HDD.
It was perfectly fine before however after the swap however after a high pitch noise occurred when I increased the display brightness. So Just this morning I pulled my iMac apart again and unplugged the screen again and had a look at the connectors. all were fine except for the Vertical Sync ribbon
The 4 flat wires/ribbons that are exposed on the end are supposed to be glued to the thin piece of plastic that plugs into the socket on the circuit board. This circuit board is on the top left hand corner of the iMac as well which is where people say the sound is coming from.
I am not sure if this will solve all the problems out there but its worth a look.

I have a one year old iMac intel Core i5 running on Mac OSX 10.6.8

I'm broken. Does anyone know what the problem is?

  • No sound on iMac Intel 24'' EMC 2267 after hard drive replacement

I replaced my hard drive on my iMac Intel 24'' EMC 2267, due to numerous bad blocks, by following all the instructions on iFixit.com. I did not experience any problems.
I then installed all my files from a Time Machine backup. There were no problems with the restoration of my files. It seems that my new hard drive works beautifully.
However, one serious problem I have is that now there is no sound on my iMac. There is no startup chime, and there are no other sounds. When clicking on Sound in System preferences, it says that there are "no output devices found".
When opening system profiler, in the Audio (built-in) tab it says "Audio ID: 0"
I re-opeend my iMac to make sure that all cables were connected properly, and I did not manage to spot any problems.
I tried to reset PRAM and EMC but these did not solve the problem. I am working under MacOS X 10.6.8
Can someone help please? Any information provided will be most appreciated. Thanks in advance for your support.
    Regards - Gina

I think when you replaced your hard drive you bumped into the daughter board and that is for the sound and the wireless, You need to get another daughterboard or contact the Apple Store if your Mac is stilll under warranty.

  • NO SOUND with iMAC 24 - Please help

I have tried everything.........searched for drivers, everything, installed boot camp drivers from the CD numerous times.........I can't get rid of the ?pci device that shows up in the device manager. I am using windows xp sp3. The ? still shows up in the device list and I have no sound............everything else is perfect and great, but can't get sound!!!!!!!! I tried to update driver from realtek and sigmatel from the location on the hard drive and CD and no help. I DLed new drivers from realtek, no help..............does anyone know??????????

For those that are interested, this DOES work, as I have just tried this using SP3...........this is from another forum:
    http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=490
Basicly, download the file at the bottom of the page, unzip, go to Device Manager, right click the yellow (?) PCI driver, mark to select your own location and direct it to where you unzipped your file. That's it. UAA driver should be found and you should be able to hear sound.
If not yet, try now to re-install your audio drivers, and it should work. (if on mac, that means re-install boot camp drivers).
When doing the above, if it asks about a missing file, then point to where you just unzipped everything, it should be there, as it was for me. And, finally, in device manager, I still had one more issue for "audio device on high definition BUS" AFTER i corrected the PCI. To fix this, in device manager, I simply selected UPDATE DRIVER and use the MAC CD (or BOOTCAMP) and reinstalled the drivers and all worked fine after...................
I now have sound with my IMAC 24in and Windows XP SP3 (yes, i don't want to use much of XP at all, but it's nice to have............
Enjoy and let me know if this works or if you have issues, I would love to actually try and help...........

  • High Pitch Sound from iMac '11?

    Hello everyone,
I purchased the mid '11 iMac model and am now hearing a high pitch sound which fluctuates when I change the screen brightness.
Is this a known problem; is it big enough of a problem that Apple will fix when still under warranty?

You shouldn't be hearing a high pitch sound. You should take the iMac in for evaluation, but first verify that you don't have another other equipment attached that might be contributing to the issue. My recommendation is to try disconnecting the iMac from any surge strips or backup power (UPS) supplies to see whether the issue still occurs. I would also disconnect any external peripherals, USB/FW devices, speakers or audio equipment that you have attached.

  • After Mavericks, sound on iMac's unbalanced?

    Hi,
A couple of days ago i upgraded my mid-2010 iMac 27" to OSX Mavericks.
Before (when I was on Snow Leopard) the audio was "normal", balanced or what you would say.
Now that I've upgraded to Mavericks the sound is unbalanced, making the speakers (I've tried several) emitt more sound from the right speaker than the left.
This is quite annoying, and I'm wondering if anyone else have had similar issues, or have a solution to my problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    nejo1

Might be solvable by using /Applications/Utilities/Audio-MIDI-Setup.app
Select your output device on the left, then move both (L/R) sliders all the way to the left so that they share the same dB values on the right. Now you can use the volume keys on the keyboard and they should both move the same way.

  • Distorted sound on iMac with Windows 7

    Hi,
I've just upgraded from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium.
Before the sound worked perfect, but now it is very distorted.
When I mute windows I can still hear sound - it is just a bit more distorted and at a bit lower volume.
I tried to upgrade the sound card driver from Realtek, but lost sound completely. I reinstalled the Apple driver and now I have distorted sound again.
I'm running Boot Camp 3.1 drivers.
Does any one know how to solve this problem?
    /Tejs

Can you find out which drivers you currently have for me please.
go to Start >> right click Computer >> System Properties >> System >> Device Manager
Now open up the sound, video and game controllers section and there should be something correlating to your sound driver here, if you could give me the name or the driver name if possible.
also what iMac model are you running.
