Sound on Thinkpad x120e

Hello,
I have been attempting to get sound working for some time without success, using ALSA. (I hope this is the correct forum to post this issue)
[root@wldhcp-10-221-34-123 ~]# cat /etc/asound.conf
#pcm.!default {
# type hw
## card 1
#ctl.!default {
## type hw
# card 1
# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
hint {
show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
ctl.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
With respect to the above, I had tried also to comment out the bottom portion leaving only the currently commented out portion, with no success.

Playing with aplay seems to do something, as it doesn't return to the terminal after outputting the following, but with no sound:
[root@wldhcp-10-221-34-123 Zero 7 -- Another Late Night]# aplay 14\ cool\ out.mp3
Playing raw data '14 cool out.mp3' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
Additionally, KDE lists several outputs in order on its 'Multimedia -> Phonon':
'Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio sound server)'
'HDA ATI SB (CX20682 Analog)'
PulseAudio Sound Server'
'jack'
'pulse'
'Default'
'HD-Audio Generic (HDMI 0)'
And a few others, some of which are greyed out.
I presume I am making some silly error due to my lack of knowledge of these subsystems.. any advice appreciated! Of course I can also provide any additional info if I forgot anything.

I am having trouble using aplay -D -- what sort of value is supposed to come after D? I tried with card number, and filenames from /dev/snd.
Thanks
The -D option doesn't select hardware devices by name but PCMs, for example
aplay -D default
Regarding your actual problem:
Firstly, for ALSA audio playback, you definitely have to use your second card as shown by aplay -l:
card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: CX20582 Analog [CX20582 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
For what reasons did you comment the first few lines doing that in your /etc/asound.conf out?
In any case, you need something like
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.timer.card 1
in /etc/asound.conf. I have a Thinkpad x121e with the following cards:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: CX20590 Analog [CX20590 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
and I get playback using that. Try simple ALSA audio playback with these settings, like in mplayer -ao alsa:device=default <TUNE>. It should work if there are no permission problems involved. If it doesn't, we need to debug the permission problem. Save pulseaudio for the end as it is the most quirky thing in this thread.

  • ThinkPad x120e will not start

    Hello
    I have a problem with my notebook ThinkPad x120e.
    When I push "Power" button - nothing happens ... no LEDs, no noise from coolers and HDD, no sound signals
    I try to remowe battery, plug in power cable - It does not work

    Unplug the a/c and take out the battery and hold the power button in for 30 seconds. Then plug in the a/c only and see what happens. If nothing, then unplug the a/c and put in the battery only and see what happens.
    If still nothing, take out the hard drive and the ram chips and try to start it and see if anything happens.

  • Suitable matte matrix for Thinkpad X120e?

    Hello, everybody! I have LG LP116WH1-TLB1 matrix in my X120e, and it has very annoying problem with backlight flickering. I was going to replace it with Samsung LTN116AT01-401matte matrix, but have a difficultly to find it on sale. Everywhere I was looking for I was told "discontinued" and got offers to buy another LG (or AUO). But I found that strange Samsung LTN116AT02-401 matte matrix, which is still widely distributed on the market. Does anybody know is it compatible with Samsung LTN116AT01-401 (or Thinkpad X120e in general)? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Sergey.

    AFAIK, there's not much you can do.
    My X100e has a few light scratches as well, but I don't treat it particularly carefully.

  • Where can you buy a thinkpad x120e motherboard

    Where can you buy a thinkpad x120e motherboard without the processor attached/soldered onto it?

    nowhere. The cpu would be soldered to the board at the same instant all the other chips were soldered to the bottom. That is the way BGA manufacturing works. The board gets zapped once per side

  • Where is the thinkpad x120e SSD TRIM driver?

    i have a thinkpad x120e and i recently upgraded the harddrive to a OCZ agility 3 SSD. i read this post here to get the AMD SATA drivers, however the links are dead, i tried searching on the AMD site with no results, where can I get these drivers so I can enable TRIM on my SSD?
    here is the post I was talking abou with the dead linkst: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X120e-hard-drive-replacement/td-p/398635/page/...

    Hello,
    I had found the page a while ago when I went hunting for the latest drivers from AMD for my X120e.  I believe that the X120e has a chipset which performs similar to AMD's 700 or 800 series chipset, but has been optimized for use with the E-Series CPU in terms of power management, probably due to a more efficient manufacturing process (just a guess on my part).
    I installed all of the packages on my ThinkPad X120e. No problems noted after doing so.

  • Thinkpad X120e - SO MUCH heat from bottom of the laptop

    I Bought my new Leonovo Thinkpad X120e 10 days back. I get excessive heat from bottom of my laptop. I am unable to keep the laptop on my LAP for more than 5mins.. its so much heat. I am also getting heat from left side of the laptop. I think its from the heat ventilator. I installed TPFAN control software to look for temperatures. The CPU temp reads between 53 to 67 degree C.
    I took my laptop to a local lenovo service provider and he replaced he replaced Thermal module FRU 04W1380.. I thought the problem would be okay. But the same heat from bottom of the laptop and from side. The most annoying thing is the heat from bottom. I preferred small laptop as I can keep it on my lap and work for few hours. I am very disspointed with the heat. Can someone help me to solve this issue or is it normal that X120e dissipates heat from bottom of the laptop?

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X120e-Laptop-Review.56445.0.html
    An outside temperature of 33 degreees C (91 F) is normal, according to Notebookcheck. That's at load. At idle, it says the x120e should hit 28 degress C (82 F).
    It also says that processor temperature gets up to 90 degres C (194 F). Your processor temperature is well within normal.
    28 to 33 degrees C is warm, but I'll bet my old x100e has you beat. Notebookcheck records the old x100e as reaching 61 degrees C (142 F) on the underside! I mean, it's no longer a matter of warm jeans and a red spot on my legs. The thing gets so hot I could turn it upside down and cook an egg.
    Check to see that your AMD processor is downclocking itself properly in the Power Manager settings. If your x120e is clocked up to maximum performance settings, it's going to run as hot as it can. If you dial it back, it'll run cooler and you'll save some battery life.

  • Which is thinner: ThinkPad X120e or IdeaPad S205?

    Hi,
    I've narrowed my decision down to either the ThinkPad X120e or the IdeaPad S205. It will be used for light surfing and word processing work.
    Has anyone been able to do an actual side by side comparison to see which model has the thinner body? I've seen several pictures of both models but none of them together to make an actual comparison.
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] Too average sound level [Thinkpad T60]

    Hi,
    Since a week I've changed my computer to an old one, a Thinkpad T60 (2006). And ArchLinux works mostly fine except for the sound level. In each programs, even in alsamixer, I put everything to the maximum level (Master, PCM, sound level of the program etc) and it's still too close of an average level. My speakers on other device are two times stronger than on the T60. Even if I plug headphone the sound is still too close of the average power of my speaker.
    Since it doesn't seems to be a configuration problem and if the speakers works great as usual, it seems to be a problem related to the T60. I've tried the mini jack on the laptop and the one on the dock, still the same result. I've also a Razer keyboard which have a mini speaker input too, same problem.
    This is my sound card: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
    I don't know what to do to solve this problem, if I can.
    Thanks for your help and tell me if you miss an information.
    Cordially, Koshie

    Did you turn the hardware volume level up? (Using volume buttons, potentiometer, although lenovo does not mention that) I doubt that there are settings on volume level/gain in bios/uefi. As last resort, you can always add a softvol plugin to your alsa configuration.
    Can you test volume levels with another operating system? Maybe even another live linux distribution like mint. Please post following:
    aplay -lL; lspci -nn | grep -i audio; amixer -c 0;

  • [solved]tail -l invalid option. Audio on thinkpad x120e

    so I am trying to get audio to work. I looked at the wiki for it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBM_ThinkPad_X120e
    this is what it says:
    $ tail -1 /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
    options snd-hda-intel index=1
    error:
    [hei@myhost ~]$ tail -1 /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf options snd-hda-intel index=1
    tail: option used in invalid context -- 1
    I have pulseaudio and alsa installed.  I checked the man of tail and l is not an option.Not sure what to do here.
    edit: if this option is -1 then  i still get an error.
    hei@myhost ~]$ tail -1 /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf options snd-hda-intel index=1
    tail: option used in invalid context -- 1

    anonymous_user wrote:Type just "tail -1 /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf". Do not add anything else.
    I figured that. Here is the input:
    [hei@myhost ~]$ tail -1 /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
    snd-hda-intel index=1
    this is what i see in alsamixer ( with the exception of the hdn-intel card):
    [hei@myhost ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic

    29 [ThinkPadEC ]: ThinkPad EC - ThinkPad Console Audio Control
    ThinkPad Console Audio Control at EC reg 0x30, fw unknown
    I can't choose the intel option for sound. If it does help I do have pulseaudio installed so im not sure if that is conflicting. With the speakertest -c 2 I can hear my speakers output the static like noise...
    edit: I just removed pulse audio. My issue now is not being able to select the default intel audio card so I can hear audio.

  • USB Boot Issue on Thinkpad X120e

    I'm having trouble booting from USB flash drives on my X120e.
    The issue:
    I have a usb drive plugged in with a bootable image, but when I select it from the BIOS menu, the screen just flickers and I end up back at the boot device selection menu.
    I've tried different boot images, different flash drives, and different methods of copying over the ISO. (Unetbootin, and dd'ing the iso to the drive.) I plugged in a USB CDROM drive, and it booted the CD that was in the drive. Any ideas what could be going on here?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    It sounds like you are not "burning" the ISO to the memory key properly.  In Windows, I use UltraISO to do that:
    1.  File -> Open, browse to the ISO
    2.  Bootable -> Write Disk Image, then click on the "Write" button.

  • Thinkpad x120e gets stuck hibernating

    I recently switched to Arch from opensuse, and mostly it's working great. One issue remains though (had it in suseas well), when i try to suspend to disk the laptop gets stuck. The screen goes black, but the power light keeps blinking, and the fan continues to spin. I' ve tried this from the arch wiki
    Suspend works out of the box, but hibernate may fail - the system usually hangs with a black screen and a blinking power button led. To fix this we need to modify the hibernation mode; using pm-utils is just a matter of creaing a file /etc/pm/config.d/hibernate_mode containing a single line:
    HIBERNATE_MODE="shutdown"
    But that changed nothing. Is there anything else i could try?
    Suspend to RAM works just fine BtW.

    Not really sure what to check for in the journal. I found this from the time i tried hibernating (with systemctl hibernate, without sudo). But i don't see anything that would help me solve the problem. I hope someone can make something of it.

  • Installaton hung on ThinkPad x120e

    Greetings,
    I have read a whole bunch of postings, and as it seems I am the only one that can't install ANY Linux on this piece of crap The damn thing comes with W7 preinstalled.
    I have downloaded this USB Core installer archlinux-2011.08.19-core-dual.iso, and dd it to usb flash.
    When I boot it, grub shows as expected, but when I select to boot either i686 or x86_64, kernel uncompresses and hangs at "Booting the kernel". This happens all the time.
    I tried fedora 15, and ubuntu 11.10 beta, the same. I only managed to boot ubunto once.
    Is there any kernel flags I can try to debug this issue. The flash memory is fine.
    Thank you.

    Yes, the BIOS is in Legacy Mode. My BIOS version is 1.13. I found what is the reason for this problem. Apparantly when something is changed in the BIOS, and when Save and Exit option is selected, the system continues to boot without hard restart. In this position Linux will hang in the early boot process. This happens not only with USB installation flash, but with already installed on HDD Linux. When something have to be changed in the BIOS, i have to completly turn off, and then turn back on the laptop for Linux to boot. Can you verify this, so we can report bug to lenovo and/or Linux devs. Try for example:
    1. Press enter, and then F1 to go to BIOS setup.
    2. Toggle some option: for example CPU -> AMD V
    3. Save and Exit
    4. Boot to ArchLinux
    Thank you, I hope to resolve positevly this issue, and report back to Lenovo.
    PS: I like this little laptop

  • X120e fit in the Thinkpad 11w case?

    Hi all,
    I was wondering if anyone in this community has the 11w case thats made by Lenovo, and whether their x120e fits into that case. :I have a 6 cell battery ( the one that protrudes out the back), so I'm worried that it might not fit. I looked at the dimensions and stuff of the case, but I would really like confirmation from people who actually own the case so I can order in peace.
    Thanks!!
    ThinkPad X120e - AMD Fusion E-350, 4GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Windows 7 Pro x64

    Hello AceMagi
    I've got the X120e(6 cell battery), too, with the Thinkpad 11w sleeve. Lucky for me and for you(of course), sleeve 11w fit with X120e, so let's order it for your own

  • Trackpoint in Thinkpad X121e not always working

    Hi,
    my Lenovo Thinkpad X121e runs with ArchLinux x86_64 and all packages updated (no testing versions). All worked fine, but since a while i have the problem, that the trackpoint sometimes does not work. This occurs randomly at startup. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If it works, it keeps working all the time the machine is running. If it is not running, after a reboot it will most likely work. This problem seems to occur randomly at about every tenth start of the machine. I remember that the trackpoint did work without problems in the past, but some update in the last few months has killed it. I currently cannot figure out, why this happens.
    I attached the dmesg and lsmod output for the working and non-working state of the trackpoint. If you need more info, please ask. I hope someone can help me :-)
    Thanks.
    Edit: Added also the Xorg.0.logs for working and non-working states.
    dmesg with a working trackpoint:

    OK, ignore my last post pointing the finger at udev.
    I poked around in the kernel code; it was actually kinda fun. Now this looks more like either a hardware problem (unlikely) or a driver bug (more likely) to me:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1894892
    Thought I'd pass along what I found.
    During a boot, the kernel will "walk" all the buses looking for devices. The methods used to find them on some buses (like PCI) are well defined, while others are not (like the serial bus). On those buses that aren't well defined the kernel will (probably) literally "probe" the bus trying to not only find a device, but also determine the exact chip installed.
    It's the second case that's involved in your problem. The serio driver found the Synaptics touchpad device (via probing). If you look closely at the kernel log, you'll see it's attached to your i8042 (PS/2) chip.  But... since this touchpad device has a "passthru port", it has to perform extra steps to determine if there's a chip on the "other side" of that touchpad chip. In your case there is, and it's your Trackpoint.
    If it's successful in finding the Trackpoint chip, the drivers/input/mouse/trackpoint.c kernel driver file will put the following in your syslog:
    IBM TrackPoint firmware: 0x0e, buttons: 3/3
    Which is what you see in your logs when it works. Since you don't see it when it fails, then the code probably isn't being executed or it's failing with an error condition.
    Now... when a driver finds a device, it usually (but not always) creates some virtual "files" in the /sys directory... and that's what will happen if that trackpoint.c code is executed...
    input: TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/serio5/input/input11
    So... one question is... "Does it create something in /sys when it fails?". From looking at the code, I highly doubt it.
    Although this looks somewhat improbable, if the error path for this section of the code in the trackpoint_detect function of /drivers/input/mouse/trackpoint.c file is executed then it looks like it might match your error:
    psmouse->private = kzalloc(sizeof(struct trackpoint_data), GFP_KERNEL);
    if (!psmouse->private)
    return -ENOMEM;
    Perhaps you might want to put some sort of printk call in there to see if that's what's happening. Heck, also add one to the top of the function to see if it's even being called.
    Good luck.
