Sound only through digital out

Ok! Forum doesn´t allow you to make a search before you write, these days.
Nevermind!
My daughters MacBook will not play through internal speakers.
In sys. pref. only option is digital out.
However connecting speakers/headphones works as normal.
Is this hard/ or software based?
We asked this Q before, but are now ready to send the computer for repair.
If it is hardware based, it´s probably not worth doing?

Sometimes the micro switch inside the headphone socket gets stuck.  Look inside the socket - if you can see a red light, that's what's happened.
To unstick the microswitch, plug and unplug a headphone jack into the socket 20-30 times.  If that doesn't work, use a non conducting probe (like a toothpick) to gently reach inside the socket and flick the switch

main speaker stopped working. Phone does not ring, sound only through earpiece/headphone. What to do?

I spoke to the reseller today and they aggred to exchanged it. They didn't elaborate on the actual cause but thought that it had to be a hardware issue.
It could either be the issue that Euvix suggested or it could be as simple as the outer speaker is simply not working.
Anesi, did you use the phone before the upgrade? Looking at what you've written I take you didn't so I would go back and get it exchanged.

  • No System Sound when using Digital Out. What the?!

Hmmm. I've searched and read many of the posts regarding sound problems on the mac mini but none experiencing what i think(?) is my problem. That being that when I use a toslink to connect my mac mini to my an external 5.1 amp the following is disabled:
    - Volume control in menu bar disabled (greyed out)
    - Apple Remote no longer controls volume
    - DVD Player volume does nothing
    - System Sound Preferences show 'Digital Out' but no options
Can someone confirm that these should still be adjustable? I can't believe that the now I have to use my stereo remote to control my Mac ?! Kind of ruins the 'Mac as a home theatre' experience. Unless I can find a solurion I guess it's back to analogue for me :o(
    Please help!
    Wayne.
Mac Mini, iBook, Flat Panel Lamp iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I can't believe it! I'm not an audiophile I just wanted to have the clearest quality sound, so for Apple to allow fibre optic connection but disable the ability to change volume just flat out *****. There should at least be the option to treat the connection as stereo. Why should I have to switch back and forward to an analogue cable if i want to use the front row remote? Not very well thought out Apple!
Thanks for the Remote Buddy suggestion will look in to it.
Anyone else got any ideas for a work around??

  • No digital sound through digital-out coxial

    Hello,
    first my config :
    msi kt3ultra-ARU
    Athlon XP1800+
    1x256mb DDR RAM
    2x80GB IBM Raid 0 (great performance !!!)
    1x40 GB IBM HDD
    1x LG CD-Writer
    1x TEAC 32x CD-ROM
    no my problem :
i connected my yamaha sorround receiver through the digital out of the s-bracket with an coxial cabel but i only get the windows sound that click clack sound but no digital sound like dts or 5.1 when i play vob-files with defenitly have digital sound. it all worked fine but i reinstalled w2k and no i only get the system-sound.
i installed the latest ac97 drivers from msi but nothing helped.

    Hi,
Can you describe what did you do "before" and "after" the problem occured? Sounded like
before - no Yamaha speakers, no Win2k reinstallation
after - Win2k reinstallation, with Yamaha speakers
Or before and after (win2k installation) you have tested your Yamaha speakers and it worked?
What if you use analog output, does it sound?
If analog sound, then probably you have to check the AC'97 and Volume settings, such as to enable Digital-output etc.

  • Sound Recording with digital out. SB 5.1 Live, + and Inspire GD

Have these on my Dell?+?also have a standard SB? PCI 28 second sound card and (nearly) Everything works. I even get DTS and Dolby lights when I play dvd's. Not from ac3 tracks of?Media Player obvioulsy (tho my buffalo link theater media streamer?and reci'ver? seem to manage but hey ho)? What i want is the ability to record off the digital out stream?without having to disable it, without?changing settings (much) and without switching to the?the second sound card ect ect. ) Could i link both cards so i record off one, whilst listening through the other one either thriough software or a cable connection?(Atomix MP3?allow you to access both cards at the same time,? no other software i have come across does.),?2)?Is there any recording software that will take a feed off the digital out?3) Is there anything else i can do in creative sound recorder / polderbits or whatever to resolve this?nb?I know that i can switch to analogue out to record, the problem then is i can't hear anything through the gd 580 unless i hook up the analogue inputs +?I only get 2 speaker output, and thats if i've rembered to change every setting correctly. Many thanks?Ian

For the first time I was able to get Dolby Digital sound through to my receiver by playing the AC3-test from creative.
And in here I also saw the passthrough settings as well.
But still not from WinDVD og Mediaplayer.
Could there be alot of codecs etc. which works against each other? -Is there a way to uninstall all codecs, mediaplayer, creative-things etc. without doing a whole windows reinstall?
Yes I have connected from the 3,5 jack to RCA on the receiver.

  • Sound Blaster card 'digital out' into my high-end stereo receiver?

BSound Blaster card 'digital out' into my high-end stereo receiver?A I want?to interface my iTunes music library?(all tunes in Apple Lossless file format) to my high-end sound system, using an optical (TOSLink)?cable and a "mini TOSLink adapter" that will plug into the 'digital out' jack on the Sound Blaster card in my Windows XP PC. This configuration will take advantage of the high-end DAC's in my Denon receiver.
I don't care about getting surround sound out of my PC, and I'm not a gamer. I just want hi-fi stereo music from my iTunes library.
    Will this work?Can I expect CD-quality sound?
Also, would it be worthwhile to upgrade my model SB394 sound card to a hi-fi SB card like X-Fi Xtreme Audio, or is any sound card as good as any other for simply deli'vering the digital data stream to my Denon receiver?

well, I have two devices that a combo CD player/Tape decks/radio tuner/amp; one has misc input, the other doesn't. Both are analog devices, both are old things I bought at a yard sale. I got 6 bookshelf speakers that use pairs of stripped wire as the input hooked up in 2 parallel wired sets of 3 to the CD/Tape/Tuner/Amp thing that has a misc input. Anyway, the one without misc input has a 3 disk CD changer, plus it would give me a way to input tape and radio sounds sources into my computer if I just connected it's audio outputs to the internally located Aux In on my soundblaster card in my computer. But I wonder, what considerations do I have to have?
Firstly, is the Aux In on my board analog or digital? I'm assuming if it doesn't say "digital", it's analog; correct?......
secondly, and more importantly; the CD/Tape/Tuner/Amp thing is supposed to be used with 8 ohm speakers and do I have to worry about sending too much current to the soundcard?
specific model of SB card; I'm not sure. It has 2 analog outs, analog in, mic in, digital out and a joystick port; and it came installed on a 200 Dell w/ Win ME
and please, don't try selling me something; I use old crappy hardware and really do not mind doing so.
any help will be appreciated, thanks.
    Aux-In is an analog port (4-pin connector/stereo).
Don't connect powered output (= speaker outputs) into soundcard but, if possible, use some low-power connection like Headphones-Out (or if possible then some line-out port).

  • No Sound when using Digital out with Mac Mini

The Digital out on my mac mini has become seriously unreliable. The sound slider is all the way up but locked, no movement is possible. The Toslink cable shows light, and when plugged into another device the amplifier receives sound.
This is an intermittent problem, for awhile rebooting would make the sound come back, however this has stopped working.
unplug the toslink and the built in speaker plays fine. Sound slider becomes movable.
If you sent the sound slider to 50% then plug the toslink back in it jumps to 100% and all controls ar grayed out and 0 sound.
any troubleshooting tips would be most appreciated as this is my primary audio video device.

Not likely. Think about this: The output is simply a digital stream of bits. Volume does not apply to digital bits... The first place where you can adjust volume will be in an outboard DAC, a preamp or an integrated receiver.
For a great DAC, check out ps audio "digital link III", retails currently for around $695, B stock may be avail for around 550. There is a cheaper quality DAC available from Cambridge Audio "Digital Magic", but it is not in the same league as the PS Audio or other higher cost DACs (such as Benchmark Media's DAC1).
For a fantastic audio system that takes digital audio from a Mac Mini, I have a PS Audio DL III taking Toslink from the Mini and feeding RCA analog into a Zpre from Parasound with a couple of Zamp (zone amps) from Parasound going into very nice bookshelf speakers and in ceiling speakers.
The volume is controlled by the Zpre amp ...As it must be

  • Incessant clicking sound, only through internal speaker

My powerbook is making an incessant clicking sound from (or near) the left speaker that turns off when I plug in an external speaker. I've searched the archives and found that Tiger was supposed to fix this ages ago, but I'm on OS 10.4.11. What do I do?

May I ask what you use as a work around?
I just noticed that if I change my system preferences to digital out - the internal speaker no longer functions with FCEHD - so now I am thinking that I can run a optical to the input of my M-Audio box and monitor it that way - or it may even feed back into the USB speakers. I feel stupid having to rig up a $4,000 computer system...

Downloaded the Mountain Lion y'day. The video is perfect but the sound is intermittent. I got an apple TV y'day which I connected to my Onkyo sound system. Any good soul who would help me ;(

    Update:
    First Applecare chat session:
    1. Was asked to boot in safe mode. No luck.
    2. Was asked to zap the pram. No luck.
    Second Applecare session:
    1. Was asked to archive and install. No luck.
    Third Applecare session:
    1. Was asked to try with a clean user. No luck.
At this stage the tech told me they will approve a second mid plane swap, all I have to do is call them in to arrange for the spare part to be shipped to my local Apple techs.
I have to say this: While I am terribly annoyed at this whol e ordeal, having Applecare has made an incredible difference in the stress levels of this whole business. Each of these 3 sessions were done as an onine chat. I kept working and only had to make sure to keep an eye on the tech in case he was asking for something.
It is a **** of a lot better than to play phone tag with two tiers of tech support. While sure, I am glad that Applecare extends my coverage by two years, the combination of being allowed to deal with these issues over a chat session totally kicks ***. And the on-site repairs are awesome when going to an Apple store is too much of a hassle.
This is the last time I don't purchase Applecare at the same time I purchase a Mac.

  • Sound output permanently digital out???

    Hello there, folks
Yesterday I was at a shoot and brought my laptop just to check email periodically. That is truly all I did. And yet, at a certain point I went to play something out loud and when clicking the volume button it seems I can't control the sound, and I don't hear anything.
When I go into preferences it reads:
Digital Output - built in output
When I plug in headphones that changes to:
    Headphones - built in output
    and I can hear again.
Still, I have never used digital output. Why is that the new default? Where did my other option go? How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment!
    - Fredo

Plug your headphones in and out a couple of times. Check the jack for things like lint. There is a switch in the jack that detects the insertion of an optical cable which disables the built-in speakers. The switch is in the position that says an optical cable is plugged in even though it isn't. There is probably red light coming out of the jack.

Yes, make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store to have it replaced, or take it back to where you bought it and exchange it.

  • I have connected my MacBook Pro to my television using the correct cables, but now I cannot hear sound, only through my MacBook. How do I get the sound through my television?

My MacBook Pro is up to date on updates and it's a Westinghouse television with a rocket fish hdmi connecting cord.

What MacBook Pro have you got? Not all MacBooks Pro can transfer audio through Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt or HDMI > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4241
If you have connected the TV to your Mac through Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt and your computer doesn't support audio over that port, you have to connect external speakers

  • Sound only plays through one earphone

hey i'm new here so bear with me if i make any mistakes.
recently my 30GB ipod video started playing sound only through one earphone, i tried several different pairs but the problem was the same. i took it to my local apple shop and they said it can't be fixed, but you could have it replaced for £109, i'm a student i don't have £109!
he said i could get a radio remote, something like this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-MA070G-C-Radio-Remote/dp/B000MTEER4/ref=pdbbs_sr4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1200145716&sr=8-4
i wasn't prepared to spend that much so just got a standard remote control with no radio function, however i didn't realise that this had to be connected through the headphone socket! what's the cheapest and most convenient way i can get sound going through both my headphones again? can i get a standard remote that just goes through the adapter at the bottom?
    many thanks, jack

    Baron,
Have you tried using the PNPreg tool provided by microsoft for this problem? A description of the problem can be found in this kbase article on Microsoft's site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=80509
This is specifically aimed at Winfast Graphics Adaptors, but it applies to this situation also. Follow the instructions found in the resolution section of the article.
