Sound out reverts to internal speakers at every shut down

Everytime I turn on my Mac Pro I have to go to System Preferences and change the sound to Line out. Every time I shut down the sound out defaults to the internal speakers. is there anyway to stop this?

Things you can try.
1. Smc and pram resets.
2. See if you can get it to "stick" by setting the sound out preference with Audio MIDI Setup (in your Utilitiles folder).
3. Last resort -- temporarily remove the two plists in /Library/Preferences/Audio.

  • Sound Output reverts to Internal Speakers every time I log in

    Hello all,
I have a Mac Pro 2,1 and just installed update 10.6.2 and every time I restart or power it up, it will revert sound from Digital Out to Internal Speakers.
Later I created a new account, logged out and logged back in and sound was also reverted to internal speakers.
I have another internal hard drive with 10.6.1 and don't have this issue.
Does anyone know how I can submit a bug-report to Apple?
    Thanks,

See this thread for some things to try:

  • Line out and Sound Effects revert to Internal Speakers when I reboot. Any suggestions?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro that runs fine under Yosemite. The Sound preference panel worked under Mavericks, but now I must open the Sound panel and manually change the output for both Output and Sound Effects from Internal Speakers to Line Out after a reboot. This is irritating and is becoming more so.
I've zapped the PRAM with no success.
Would an AppleScript app on startup work? I can't seem to find any appropriate commands in AppleScript that affect these parameters.
    Any help appreciated.

The script doesn't seem to work on Yosemite. Trolling around in the library, it appears that "audio" is now "sound," which would explain the file not found.
    Or am I missing something?
    Suggestions?

  • No metronome sound out of the internal speakers

    Hi everybody,
there's no metronome sound coming out of the internal speaker of my Mac while playback.
All settings are fine (play while playback, use internal speakers, "Klopfgeist" switched off) and it worked well with the same settings in Logic Express 7.
    Please help!
    best regards

    yes, its set on All.
The Klopfgeist sound comes via the Interface with the rest of the sounds, but it should be only on the internal speakers (earohone)
It's a setup for live-performance (drummer gets the Click via earphones), sound via interface for the audiance

  • I am unable to get any sound out of my internal speakers and no options to use them are available. Plus the mute box is ticked and greyed out and will not untick

How can I get sound from my internal speakers. I have not set or adjusted any sound levels but all sound is muted and am unable to untick the mute box.  I had sound when I bought the machine but now nothing, not even an option to select internal soeakers in Souns setup!!

    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    3. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • Sound Preferences: switches from Internal Speakers to Digital Out

I've been having this problem recently. I sent the computer off to Apple a few weeks ago and it helped for a while, but no longer.
My computer has a problem with it's sound output jack or something. Without inserting anything into the plug, the Sound will change for "Internal Speakers" to "Digital Out" and to "Built-in Output" in the Sound Preferences Panel.
    Any suggestions?

I have a 4 month old macbook and experiencing the same problem. Just realized it after installing itunes 8 and since then having a stuttering audio playback problem too. When i plug my headphones into the audiojack the sound switches from headphones to speakers and back as well as itunes playing tracks in a stop and go mode. I repaired the rights several times, installed quicktime 7.5.5 again, reinstalled itunes 8 and for sure running the latest leopard version 10.5.5.
Also thought it could be a hardware problem but after reading this it seems more software related.
    Any idea?

  • Sound output, comes out headphones AND internal speakers

I've had my refurbished PBG4 1.33 GHz for a few months and when I plug in headphones, the sound comes out the headphones AND the internal speakers of the laptop. I've tried messing w/ the System Prefs/Output with no luck whatsoever. Any suggestions, or anybody else have this problem at all? I've read threads here that have been similar but not quite this particular problem. I need the sound to ONLY come through the headphones when they are plugged in. Kinda defeats the purpose if sound still comes out the laptop internal speakers w/ headphones plugged in.

GO to System Preferences and open "sound".
In "Output" make sure you have selected "headphones" as the source.
In "Input" make sure you have selected "line in"
Also make sure your headphones are plugged into the correct socket. There are two. The one you should be using is the one nearest the front of the computer.

  • Sound out of both rear speakers when I test back left, but nothing when test back rig

    Hi All
This has probably been posted before but I can't find the answer.
I have a sound blaster x-fi Fatalty platinum card (just upgraded from extreme music)and I am having trouble with sound settings on my speakers. (this happened with the music card to). When I run the speaker setup i get front right, left, center and sub perfectly fine but when it comes to the rear thats another problem. When it says rear right there is no sound of the rear right speaker, when it says rear left I get sound out of both rear speakers.
When installing the platinum I uninstalled the drivers and program both in windows xp and vista (I have a dual boot machine) and reinstalled from scratch but it still does this. (this happens on both windows)
I have a set of Logitech 5500 speakers connected by analog and no digital connection as I use it for games only. On the speakers it is set to Direct input with the effect as 6 channel(which is the way I have always had it when it was working).
My system specs are: Intel 6850 dual core cpu, X-FI extreme platinum, EVGA 8800 GTX video card, 2 gigs of ram, Win xp/Vista premium dual boot, Logitech 5500 5. speakers, Dell 24 inch LCD Monitor.
Any help pointing me in the right direction would be great.
I thank you all in advance.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Explosive sounds from macbook before internal speakers going out TWICE

    Hey guys,
So my internal speakers stopped working about a week ago, and a few hours before that my laptop started making weird sounds - it sounded like a mini war was going on inside my computer.. explosive sounds (i know it sounds silly but my friend was there and he heard it too). Then a few hours later, my internal speakers stopped working, AND my headphones wouldn't work either. There is no red light flashing in the headphone jack..
But a few hours later after restarting and shutting off my computer a few times, the sound came back again! The explosive sounds stopped happening.. until a few days later when i heard the sounds AGAIN. And of course, my internal speakers are dead once again.
Everything else on my laptop is fine. Nothing is corrupted, my applications are running smoothly. I'm guessing because the sound is out, videos are not playing either. It would load, but it won't play. Same with iTunes. Even if I select a song, it won't play!
I also ran the hardware test on my laptop twice. Once it's the short version, the second time was the extended version. Both times the results were normal, that there's nothing wrong with my hardware.
Someone please help me! What else can I try?
    -Steph

Weirdness, I opened that, but the main volume slider for that is greyed out no matter what I do. It's all weird:

Anybody have any idea what's up?

  • With speakers plugged in, sound first begins on internal speakers...

...and then switches after a second to the external (plugged in) speakers in the headphone port.
I can't tell when this happens. I think it has something to do with whether sound has been used in a while. (does the sound card sleep?)
I've owned many Macs and never experienced this behavior. Once it starts playing out of the external speakers, it stays there and works as expected, but the real problem comes when you are working and there is a short burst of sound like an alert. The sound starts briefly on the laptop speakers and then switches mid sound to the external. Quite weird and quite annoying.
    Any suggestions?
UPDATE: I was just watching the iPad keynote, paused, came over to Safari for a minute and came back and experienced the internal-then-external sound. What's up??

I don't know if this could be your problem, but...
On some systems the BIOS will sometimes disable the on-board audio controller at startup if it doesn't detect anything connected to the inputs or outputs (older HP computers did this to me ).  You usually need to enter the BIOS and permanently enable the On-board Audio by changing the setting from 'Auto Detect' to 'Enabled'.
    Hope that helps.

  • ThinkPad T430s No Sound Through Headphones or Internal Speakers

My laptop is unable to play sound through both headphones/earphones and its internal speakers.
I downloaded and installed the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from the following site: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t43... .
As a result, the Device Manager shows that the HD Audio Device is working properly.
Also, there is a green check mark over the internal speakers icon and headphones icon (when I plug the headphones into the jack), which was not present before I installed the Realtek Driver.
However, there is still an "X" over the audio icon in the taskbar.
When I click on the audio icon, the following window appears, stating that the audio device is disabled.
I have went through various forums and solutions, but none have been helpful so far.
Thank you so much for your time and help for this issue!

The Unknown Device seems to have disappeared from my Device Manager when I restarted my laptop. However, the HD Audio Device is still there.
My audio stopped working around December 23, 2014. Since then, I have tried to find solutions on various other sites. But, when I search for the System Restore, it only brings up a recent Windows Update.
Roll Back for the HD Audio Device is greyed out.
Also, after uninstalling the HD Audio Device and rebooting Windows, this dialog appears, mentioning that the Unidentified Device is something that was unplugged, which I think are the headphones. Also, there was a Failed installation for the Audio Device.
Thanks so much for helping me look into this problem.

  • Sound not recignizing my internal speakers

Hi: My parents iMac is not recignizing the internal speakers in their Mac. When we try to change the volume, it has a cirlce that is crossed out. Any help would be great
    Thanks

Except for your keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices/peripherals from your computer.
Double check the link MGW listed & make sure the following is your set up:
Change the Audio Output setting to +_44100.0 Hz_.+
    Trash the com.apple.soundpref.plist document
Boot from your System Install DVD & run the repair disk/repair permission options.
After doing the above reset the SMU - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 iMac G5: How to Reset the SMU (iMac G5, the iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor), and the iMac G5 (iSight)).
Say 3 Hail Marys, make an offering to Buddah, Praise Be To Allah, sacrafice your first born & last but not least, kiss your iMac (gotta cover all bases).
    Good luck!

  • No sound out of left on speakers

There is no sound out of the left on speakers on my iPhone 4s.
    I didn't upgrade to IOs 6. It's still IOs 5.1.1
When using earbud it works L & R.
I made sure Mono Audio is Off and the slider is centered betweel L & R.
Maybe a problem on left speaker?

You mean the two bottom speakers - the one at left is a microphone, the other at right is the speaker?
I didn't know about that. I thought both were speakers.
    Thanks for the help.
    Luigi
