Sound output only on two channels but system set to 7.1 sound

LabVIEW2011, Win7, Creative audigy 2 soundcard and/or USB sound device  set to 7.1 sound
The sound2.llb ... info found the card but only allow to open 2 output channels giving error 4811 when trying to configure for more than 2 channel output.
However the OS audio test 'ping' every speaker
Any hints welcome
I attached my test vi. you will need at least one wav sound file ... (or try to rescue the diagram values... )
It runs with one or two channels but fail on higher channel counts.

Hi Henrik,
what I can recommend to you is directly using the Driver API of your soundcard device if available.

Sorry, I was confused by your profile signature showing "GarageBand (Mac) '11".
It is very similar in the newest GarageBand 10.0.2:
Enable Audio Units in the GarageBand Preferences > Audio/Midi.
    Create a software instrument track.
Show the Smart Controls and click the button.
In the Info panel scroll, to make the Audio Units brick visible and click the "Instrument" control.  Select "AuInstrument > Apple > DLSMusicDevice" and click it, to open the settings.
This should show you a panel, where you can select a Sound Bank. Does that show your sound font?

  • Analog to digital: sound is only in left speaker, but I want it in both

I converted an old VHS tape to digital with my digital camcorder and imported it to iMovie. However, the VCR only had one audio output, not two for Right and Left. I tapped into the left (as I could only do one or the other).
Now, all my sound only comes through the left channel. I know the video will not be stereo, but is there a way I can get sound through the left and right channels?

Hmmm, I'm afraid this may be a lost cause. Is there really no way to simply make the movie mono instead of stereo with iMovie? The suggestion of using QuickTime didn't work for me, as I described above, but I found a way to accomplish the same result wih iTunes. The problem is, first off, this seems really hokey to have to go through so many steps, in different programs, just to make the sound mono. Secondly, when I import the (now mono) audio back into iMovie, it will be very difficult to make it sync up perfectly with the video. Multiply this task with about twenty or more clips, and it will be very time consuming, and likely to have audio that does not match perfectly with the video (which is simply not acceptable). Is that really the best (only) way to get the sound to come out of both speakers?

  • Power Mac G5 Audio is outputting only the right channel

I have an audio problem with my PowerPc Audio card, I presume. It is only outputting the right channel. I have a set of computer speakers and when I go into System Preferences and move the balance slider, there is only sound coming from the right channel. Absolutely nothing from the left.
I found this problem when editing in FCP and needing to do a split track with VO on channel 1 and Nats and music on channel 2. I could see the meters showing the audio output from channel 1 but no sound coming through the Mac's left channel output.
Also, I have a DeckLink extreme card in my system and when I test the L-R channel output I get the same problem. I do not know if the decklink is somehow using the Mac audio card for help with its output. I would think that it is using its own hardware for generating the audio output from the card.
Hardware issue? Time for a Mac Genius repair? Don't know if there is any workarounds or fixes before I go that route. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Doug

No I didn't but I run my Mac's output into an analog mixer and then out to my speakers.
When outputting through channel 2 only, both speakers work, yet when I pan to channel 1 the sound drops out. As I pan from full channel 2, where both speakers are up full, you can hear the sound fade out.
Also, I got the Deck Link card to work through my mixer. The L and R channels are outputting through separate inputs in the mixer and work independently and correctly. I even changed out the mini stereo cable just in case and still no left channel out of the Mac.
Very weird! I've even repaired and defragged my system disk in case it is some sort of corrupted code. Just grasping at straws before I take it to a Mac Genius.
Thanks for writing. I appreciate any and all suggestions.

  • Digital sound output only after using Headphones

    i used my MacbookPro 17 2.66
with headphones to listen to music and after i removed headphones there is a red light in the headphone port and only digital sound output option in system preferences control panel
If i reinsert headphones, headphone output reappears
Where are my internal speaker option gone
i have a time machine backup
Can i just replace sound preferences
    Thanks

Generally that means your headphones' plug is not exactly to dimensional stands and has jammed the internal connector in the jack to the "mute" position. The plug's tip-to-shoulder distance seems to be the variable.
I've found with my MBP that, with non-standard plugs, inserting them only until they function--not until the "stop shoulder" hits the MBP case--prevents this. I have an old and cheap set of external speakers whose plug works perfectly. A patch cable I use to connect to my desktop sound system has a non-standard plug, and I have to leave the plug slightly out of the jack to prevent the problem you see. Again, insert until you hear proper sound to the device, not by feel. I've no problems with the plugs falling out using this technique.
The "official" fix is a new logic board but most people are able to free the internal contact by inserting a plus into the jack and gently wiggling it in the horizontal plane. One person recently said he freed his with a wooden toothpick.
If you use anything other than a standard plug to manipulate the jack, be certain it's non-conductive. BTW, if you use the "Search Discussion" option in the upper right of this page and search for "red light" (use the quotes) you will see a number of threads here on the subject.

  • Output only in left channel

So I recorded a song and various instruments... everything was going great but I don't know what happened, suddenly sound was only coming from left channel and right channel only gets like reverbs and stuff. At the bottom only one of the bars is showing sound bouncing. How do I pan it back to normal?

It could be that we're both missing something obvious that someone else would see.
However, trashing Preferences (and to a lesser extent Caches) is a way to get rid of GB "ghosts" that mysteriously show up for no reason and mess things up. It often fixes mysterious problems that can't be fixed any other way (short of a complete uninstall and reinstall). When you get rid of preferences, it makes GB appear fresh to the computer. Caches are just temporary files - you can trash all of them and they simply grow back like weeds when you run the program.
If you're concerned about the risk, you could put them into folders, put the folders into the trash, and restart your computer, but don't empty the trash so the prefs and caches stay there "just in case." Open up GB (it will look like it's being opened for the first time), and new preference files and caches will be generated automatically. However, you could always retrieve your old preferences and caches in the trash, and swap them out for the new ones (although it's really better just to trash the old ones).
This won't effect your other projects and may not even help this one. However, it may fix the problem as this sometimes does fix ghost-in-the-machine problems, and is along the lines of housekeeping. It's refreshing some files that occassionally get corrupted, forcing the program to generate pristine new ones.

  • Sound output only has option for Digital Out, no internal speakers, and no headphones.

I recently got a new 2012 Macbook Pro 15" and my sound output is not working correctly. The only option is Digital Out - Optical digital-out port. There is no intenral speakers option, nor is there a headphones option when I put them in. I am running Mountain Lion and unfortunately have tried looking up similar posts with no help. I have attempted to reboot the SMC and perhaps one other trick, but I have not had any luck. If anyone has any idea what I should do or if you need more information to make a diagnosis that would be great! To note, it worked fine when I first got the computer, but when I was messing around trying to hook my computer up to an HDTV (i have a thunderbolt HDMI cable that sends sound as well) I had a couple of problems (I think it was because it was a very old Vizio that did not support the HDMI) and perhaps some of the settings got changed on my computer. Anyways thanks in advance!

    Hi,
That is good news! For some reason I only experienced that for a little while before it straightened out itself. But I know that was driving a lot of people crazy. Thanks for pointing out that 10.6.2 did the trick.

  • How can I speed up this VI? It only checks 6 channels, but updates only 20/sec

I am measuring 6 channels of current in this VI. It will only update about 20 times per second.
The VI is quite simple. It measures current on 6 channels, performs a running average using shift registers, and performs some math on the current to convert it to loads. It also writes all values to a file once per iteration. I ran a similar VI that only checked 4 channels and did not write to the file, but it is not much faster. I also tried to make sure all coercion dots were eliminated, but that did not help much either.
Can anyone take a quick look and see if there is something obvious I am doing that is slowing it down? Or is this a reasonable update rate for this VI?
    The top-l

You are using high lvel VI to do you I/O inside the loop.
Take a look at the shipped example that demonstrates how to start a do a continuous acquisition.
The example is title something like
    Continuous double buffered acquisition.
The High VI's you are using are configuring the I/O and allocating buffers durring each iteration. THe eaxample I mentioned will do all of this one up front and then just re-use everything inside the loop.

  • Sound outputting problem

    Hi All,
I am having continuous problem solving the following sound issue:
When burnt both video and audio files, having used Compressor and Toast Titanium 9, the video plays fine however my sound plays only in two channels.
The sound was designed and edited in Soundtrack pro application. The output setting selected in Compressor is: 5.1 Surround Quicktime, 96.000 kHz.
There is also this warning box coming up, when changing the sequence setting audio output to surround, saying:
' The current audio device does not support the number of outputs set in the sequence settings audio outputs tab.'
Any help/advice will highly be appreciated.
    Stephen

    Hi Stephen,
First, I'm assuming you are using the optical out of your mac to go to the BDV. With it plugged into your mac goto your system prefs and in the Sound>Output>Devices select Line Out Digital.
In FCP goto Audio Video Settings>A/V Devices>Playback Output>Audio and select 'Built-in Output'. Now click the options button next to the selector. Set number of Channels to 6 and sample rate to 96000.
Now goto your sequence settings (Cmd-0) and under the Audio Outputs Tab click the selector that says 'Load Audio Output Preset' and select 5.1 and click OK
Back on the timeline right/ctrl-click the lock symbol on each track from 3-6 and select the following:
    3: 3 (Ctr)
    4: 4 (Sub)
    5: 5&6 (rear L)
    6: 5&6 (rear R)
1 and 2 will already be setup for Front L&R
That's it for FCP 5.1 support
In Toast you must set the audio output to Dolby Digital. PCM only supports Stereo on Bluray and DVDs. Just customize the settings in Toast. Click the customize button, then under encoding select Custom and choose Dobly Digital under Audio.
That should be you good to go
    All the best

  • Audigy 4 Pro - can only get 2 channel sound via SPDIF/optical connecti

I have two PC's, one with an Audigy 4 Pro and one with an Audigy 2 Platinum (A2P), I have my 5. speakers hooked up to the A2P and the A4P connected via the SPDIF to the A2P, I would expect to get 5. - both are setup to use 5. speakers, (I know that as a standard Digital coax/optical connections should handle multi speaker configs my entire A/V sound system (7. Dolby) uses optical and coax and it works fine).
If I run the channel test on the Audigy 4 I can get nothing but sound through the left and right speakers, if I run the test on the Audigy 2 (speakers direct connected) the sound is fine, if I reconnect the speakers to my Audigy 4 I get sound on all speakers so it looks like its an issue with the SPDIF and optical inputs (I tried both).
I have emailed tech support, I'm waiting for them to come back and tell me that the Audigy 4 cannot transmit more than two channels down the SPDIF/optical outs, thats my suspicion anyway, if that is the case then I'm not going to be a happy man and the Audigy will be going back to the store. Could be a driver problem of course as I cant believe they would implement Dolby and THX and only transmit two channels on the optical outs, that would be a bit dumb considering the primary use for digital connections is sound system interconnects.
Anyone with any ideas about this let me know, perhaps theres a hidden setting somewhere or a registry setting that switches the digital outs to carry all signals.

Just before everyone kicks off, heres a response I got from a tech guy at Creative themselves.
If you connect speakers to your sound card using a digital cable
(RCA/SPDIF or optical) then the software speaker test will only output
from two speakers. The reason for this is that the speaker test signal is
not in AC3 nor DTS format.
The signal on a digital connection is either
Optical SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
RCA SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
If you play AC3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS encoded signals, the amplifier
decodes this and outputs it to all 6 speakers (5 satellites & subwoofer)
    discretely.
When playing back stereo signals (such as Wav/CD Audio or MP3/WMA files)
the amplifier may generate 5. output based on the incoming stereo PCM
signal, provided Dolby Pro Logic decoding is available and activated.
Therefore the speaker test should not be relied on when using RCA or
    Optical digital connections.
This applies to all speaker systems equipped with RCA or Optical digital
    connections.
This makes sense to me and I'm pretty happy with it, basically as the reply says above the speaker test does not encode to AC3 hence if you hook two Audigys together and run the test you only get 2 channel output, if you play a DVD which is AC3/DTS encoded on one Audigy and listen to speakers hooked up to the other when both Audigys are connected via SPDIF or optical you should in theory get full playback on all speakers. Hopefully
    Cheers
    Simon

  • Is there a way to force A Mini to recognize the HDMI as a sound output.

Is there a way to force the Mac mini to recognize the HDMI as a sound output?  I have the HDMI going through a matrix switch and the video works fine but the audio is not recognized.  My Apple TV has no problem with both audio and video through the same set up to a tv.

    Some general checking:
Open System Information found in Applications->Utilities.
On the left side under hardware, click Audio.  In the right
pane, Expand items if necessary to reveal the contents and
see if there is an HDMI listing.  If so, click on it to get additional
    info.
Also, have you connected the Mini directly to the TV?  Narrows down
if it is actually the Mini or just how the Mini is working with the
    switch.
Another possibility is that there is a power up sequencing issue.
Ran into a situation with my Yamaha receiver, Mini, and Samsung TV
that if things were not powered in the right sequence I could only
get two channel audio and sometimes only internal audio.  With my
setup, I needed to power up the TV (waiting for it to come up completely
showing the searching for signal box), power up the Yamaha, then finally
power up the Mini.  Also, after all this, if anything was switched, I would
end up having to reboot the Mini to get audio the way it should be.

  • P7800 = two channels?

I can't seem to find anything on this. Most people who have problems with their speaker system have problems getting sound out of their speakers. I have a problem with NOT getting sound! That is, sound comes from the front when it should only come out the back. Indeed, my computer seems to think that the speaker system is only 2 channels.
When I try to test the speakers using the Realtek HD Audio Manager, I get sound coming out of all three of my left speakers when it should only come out the front left (or side left, etc.) same with the right. I also get no sound out of the sub when I test it in the program (but it works fine when actually listening to music.)
When I go to the Windows sound control, I set the speakers to 7.1 Home Theater configuration but when I go to volume control I can only control the volume for two channels. Is that normal? Shouldn't I have volume control for all 8 channels?
Of course, MP3 files and TV are only 2-channel anyway so when I do those things everything is great, but when I watch a movie or play a game, I would like to actually get the full 8-channel experience, and not have sound coming from all speakers when it should only come from one.
Can anyone help with this at all? I realize that this is likely not an issue wtih the speakers, but I'm posting here because I'm not sure who else to ask. The sound card is just integrated with my motherboard, and yes I have all of my drivers up-to-date. I am just so frustrated because I don't get why it's not working!! Please help.

    God, this is so frustrating.
After about 20 emails sent back and forth between customer support, one man finally seemed to understand my problem. He told me to uninstall the drivers, boot Windows into "Clean boot" and re-install the drivers there. I did this, and it worked!! I couldn't believe it. Sound was coming through all speakers properly on the tests. When I clicked the rear-left speaker in the Creative Console, I got sound only from the rear-left. Beauty!! I was stoked. So then I'm going with it for awhile, testing it intermittently to ensure it was still working, when it stopped. Some time today, it went back to its old habit. Sound only from the front two unless I enable CMSS, at which point I get all speakers but only two channels. Testing "rear-left" results in sound coming from the front left (if CMSS disabled) or coming through all three left (if CMSS enabled.)
I was extremely annoyed, but figured I'd just do the fix again. Except this time it didn't work. Seriously, I did the exact same thing that fixed it last time, and this time it didn't fix it. I can't even begin to describe my frustration at this point. Can nobody help me?! I have tried so many things at this point. I have re-installed the drivers in so many ways, under so many conditions. I uninstalled some other programs. I completely removed all CREATIVE software, rebooted, went into clean boot, installed the drivers, rebooted, and still it doesn't work. Why the heck did it work that one time but never again?! ARRRRRGGHHH. I am just so fed up.
    PLEASE somebody help me.

  • No sound output in Messages

    I'm running 10.8.2 on a MBP 2.66 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
When I go into the Messages preferences, the Sound output option is greyed out, similar to the Camera.
Microphone is working fine but I can't hear anything from the other side.
If I plug in some headphones, Sound output option changes to Headphones but remains greyed out and sound still doesn't work.
I've already tried resetting the PRAM with the Option-P-R trick but that hasn't helped.
Thanks in advance for helping to fix this.

    HI,
Sound in Messages needs the Output device set in System Preference > Sound > Output in the first place.
This should then show up in the Messages Menu > Preference > Video Section in the output drop down (If there is only one choice in System Preferences then it will not be a drop down but just the greyed out name of the Output.
PRAM is OPT+CMD+P+R not just Option and the letters.
If you have sound in other apps like iTunes and the volume is actually set high enough then open the Connection Doctor in Messages > Video menu.
If you do this during a Chat then the incoming Video and Audio feeds are represented by two green bars.
Having a green bar fro audio doe snot actually mean anything is being sent from the other end.
But a lack of a green bar does mean they are not sending anything.
    Get them to Check:-
They has set the mic and Volume in System Preferences > Sound > Input.
The volume needs to move the blue response bar at least halfway but not bang into the right hand end.
The Same mic or input device needs to be selected in Messages > Preferences> Video Section > Microphone Drop down.
It also needs to be "On" and ticked in Messages > Video menu > "Audio chat Enabled".
(IF they are using iChat then same Menu > "Microphone Enabled")
You can test to a certain point with several computers that Apple tend to keep on line as text accounts (they Auto answer with no human interaction)
Add appleu3test01 or appleu3test02 or appleu3test03 as Buddies to your AIM list.
Normally at least two are on line but as I type this is seems none of them are.
They tend to be playing Apple Adverts and the like.
