Sound output pops/clicks/silence Logic & Motu 828mkII & G5 Quad

Mac OS 10.4.3 G5 Quad 3.5Gb ram Logic 7.2.3 Motu 828mkII
When I've got a lot of automation going on, sometimes the sound output cuts out briefly, I hear a small pop or click on the monitors and I have to press stop on Logic to get the audio back online. It only started a couple of weeks ago after a heavy tracking session.
I've done the obvious - repair permissions, checked the wordclock (internal/external), changed the buffer settings, removed third party plugs (only Stylus and Waves)...
As it's an intermittent anomaly I've not had the courage to reinstall everything.
Anyone got any ideas ?
G5 Quad, G5 2x2.5,G4 2x867, MacBook 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   logic,reason,sibelius,plugs...

I have the same setup. I think this is more of a "lot of automation going on" issue than a MOTU issue.
How did you do the automation? I would suggest manually adding the automation points (with the pencil) instead of using the "latch" (or whatever) feature.
Also, depending on how much MIDI I have running, I might have to "freeze" some of my MIDI tracks to free some resources. You will probably need to do the same.
I'm not sure about your plugs. There's no way that I know of to profile individual plugs for resource usage. Personally, I use the plugs that come with Logic mostly. I use Ozone in the last part of my workflow for bouncing. And sometimes, I use Melodyne. But, no issues here on fairly large projects (by my standards - 16 audio / 20 MIDI tracks). I do have to freeze a lot of the MIDI though. Ohhh, and sometimes I will bounce the MIDI track to a audio file and create another audio track.

  • Speakers popping/clicking in Logic

My speakers are popping and clicking while playing things in Logic. I've had this problem before and it was resolved by turning off Airport. Naturally I have tried this and it doesn't help. Any ideas what could be causing it?
I've tried changing the buffer size and it doesn't appear to be an overloading issue. It doesn't happen when playing audio from iTunes, though thinking about it, it was doing it a couple of days ago whilst streaming a video online.
    Thanks in advance.

i'm trying to track down the cause of the same symptoms on my setup.
i'm using a new macbook pro core i7, a brand new focusrite saffire pro 24 dsp.
    there is no separate display.
i'm getting the same electronic interference and it's very noticeable and VERY recordable. it's most evident when i'm recording line level input (electric guitars, basses, etc.) these require hi-gain and really bring out the buzzing, chirping, popping and beeping that seems to be connected to the activity on the laptop (selecting menus, switching programs, moving the cursor across the dock, etc.)
i've tried different guitar instrument cables, and different instruments. i've tried headphones versus external speakers. i've disconnected other peripherals and unplugged them from the wall so that only my laptop and the audio interface are powered on.
switching from the macbook pro's 3 prong cable (here in the US) to the little clip on 2 prong plug does nothing. (is that not the same as what people call a "ground lift?")
it gets FAR worse if i remove AC power entirely. running on battery power alone makes the noises much more noticeable.
i've tried different outlets. i've turned off and removed any nearby cell phones (i know the sound of iPhone GSM interference and this isn't it).
the audio interface is powered off firewire but comes with an AC adapter. using it does no good.
moving the guitar further from the laptop doesn't improve things.
i've turned off wi-fi, which does nothing either.
obviously this isn't happening to everyone using a mac to record music or the entire music industry would be at steve jobs' door with flaming pitchforks.
so there must be SOME combination of setup that will eliminate this.

  • IMac sound pops/clicks issues

I have a new iMac 20" (iSight), two days old. I find this computer awesome! Everything is fine except for a little issue with sound. From time to time (randomly in intervals of about 30min to 1 hour) I hear an audio click/pop coming from the audio output port (just heard one of these right now). I have a JBL creature speaker system connected to the iMac's sound output port which makes the sound really audible. These sound clicks are more frequent after I turn the computer on or awake it from sleep.
Can someonde tell me if this is normal? Can it be because of fluctuations in the electric current supplied on AC outlet? I work with music and, therefore, I need very good sound quality.
    Thanks for all replies,
    Spinnn

    Spinn-
I do a lot of music production work. I have not had the specific issue that you are dealing with.
As far as audio click/pops being normal, I don't know about that. Yes, you don't have the "headroom" that analog recording does when the input sound level peaks and goes above the redline. Sometimes those peaks are reduced to pops or clicks by the software.
If your input level is good, then I do not believe that this is your problem. You may want to check that just to verify.
Another difference with my setup is that my audio does not get transferred to my amp/speakers through any of the Macs audio ports. I have a MOTU firewire interface and all audio is fed from that to the amps.
I have read other posts from folks having the same problem as you describe. I have not seen a fix yet. That does not mean that there is not one. You may want to search these forums and see.
Good luck. If I can be of any further help just let me know.

  • External speakers popping/clicking sounds on new 24" iMac 2,8 GHz

    Hello everyone,
got a new iMac from Gravis in Germany and connected it via it's headphone jack to my external stereo amplifier and it emits clicking or popping sounds whenever I switch the light in my room on or off. I've used the same connection for my Windows PC and that is working fine - no pops or clicks. The problem also exists if the Mac is muted. I can not hear clicks or popping noises when I disconnect the external speakers and use the in-built ones.
I brought my Mac back to Gravis and explained the problem and they replaced the audio board and cabling. No success. The popping and clicking is still there. Replacing the audio cable with a better shielded one does not fix the problem. Turning the power connectors of amplifier and/or Mac 180° does not help also.
The problem seems to come from a bad shielding inside the Mac or the built-in power supply that is not capable of filtering the power surges.
I've found some threads but I'm not sure whether or not these issues are related. Some people seem to think that these problems are software related.
    A workaround could be:
    1) getting an online USV that disconnects the Mac from the power cabling
    2) using the digital output (toslink)
    3) getting an external Firewire or USB sound device for sound output
Neither of these three workarounds are options for me - I still want a fix for my Mac.
Anyone here who has the same problems?
    vex

    Hi Elvinio,
I'm trying to solve this problem by getting rid of the analog connection between Mac and stereo. I've ordered a digital 7.1 receiver for 250 Euro and a toslink cable for 20 Euro.
Another solution would be an online UPS. That UPS disconnects the Mac from the direct power source and delivers "freshly generated" and "perfect" current without disturbances.
I think that those pops are power surges that are not filtered by the Apple Mac's power supply. My ordinary Windows PC is not subject to clicking and popping sounds - so I suppose that either the power supply or the internal shielding of the Mac is crap.
I hope that those ugly pops are gone when I establish the new connection...
I will post the results of my not too cheap work-around.

  • MOTU 828mkII and Logic Problems

Mac G5 OSX 10.4.6 Logic Pro 7.1.1 MOTU 828mkII I've installed the new driver for the firewire software for the MOTU, I've reset factory settings, i've double checked and triple checked the internal clock settings. I am still getting distortion and high pitched whistles and error message. This happend once before but after installing the new driver things worked fine. Now i'm not getting anywhere. Thanks for any help !!!!

Just a note, I've had this problem as well with the MoTu 828ii. There is an issue with this system not functioning properly with Pro Logic 7.1. Out of the blue, I start getting a message "Midi and Audio out of synch" messages, and there is no sound. I tried downloading the latest driver, no go.
I called the MoTu people and they aren't very helpful with their system's conflict with Pro Logic. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying the Motu at this point. I'm thinking of Apogee if I can't get this thing running soon.

  • LOGIC PRO 8 with motu 828mkII audio interface

I have bought a MOTU 828mkII Firewire and I am using it with a Mac Pro Intel
dual core v. 10.4.10 running Logic Pro 8.
My mixer is a Yamaha DM-1000. I have a problem with audio.
I have the mac going into the 828 via a firewire cable, then out of the 828 to
the mixer using 8 channel adat lightpipe. All devices have the same 48k sampling
rate but I can not hear a logic virtual instrument, like a piano, using the adat
lightpipe interface. If I use the analog "main outs" on the 828 I have audio,
but nothing comes thru the adat output. If I use another application besides Logic with the same setup, the adat connection works fine. This leads me to think the problem has to be in Logic and how it interfaces with the Motu 828mkII. I have read all manuals and can't figure
    out what's wrong. Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Pierre.

Generally, outputs on audio interfaces are discreetly named. So, if your master output is set to Output 1&2, that might refer to your analog outputs. If you want to send the a different set outputs, say, a stereo pair via ADAT, you might need to send to outputs 5&6, instead of 1&2.

  • MacBook, Logic Pro 8 & MOTU 828mkII (FW400):  int or ext 7200rpm drive?

    Hi,
I think I'm finally ready to solidify my setup.
    My question is:
Since the MacBook only has one FW400 jack, is it better to run and Logic's Content on an internal 2.5 7200 drive OR on the external firewire drive, which is daisychained through the MOTU 828mkII. Also, since the internal is 7200, would it be a good idea to record to it also?
The reason that I'm asking this is because I'm scared about latency between the ext drive and the interface.
Does anyone have a similar setup or knowledge on this type of situation? I'm wondering is updating my internal drive to a seagate 7200 160GB will be worth it.
    Thanks in Adavance. Geoff

You're absolutely right. I have the same Saffire Pro and the same problems on all my Intel Macs.
Daisy chaining worked flawless on my older Powerbooks with the Same interface. Even copying a stupid file from a hard-drive while playing a stupid MP3 would let the Saffire go ape ;-(
I tried opening a support ticket but Focusrite said it was a normal issue because of the contention on the Firewire bus. I guess they apply double standards when it comes to Intel Macs, since there were no problems on PowerPC macs. There's something different about the Firewire chip on the Intel Macs, that's for sure.
I bought a RME Fireface 400 and this interface does not have the same problems.
See this article if you want to know more about Firewire audio chips:

  • Pop/clicking sound when in 5.1 mode under Vista 32bit using the latest 2_18_0004 drive

I'm using S750 speaker system, very noticeable!!!!
I tried 7. mode, still pop/clicking sound!!!!! But no in stereo mode!!!!
It's long time for users that reported this issue, after Creative Labs released so many driver versions, this issue still not been
    corrected, it's really SHAME!!!!!
Hope this get worked out in next release!!!!!!
Hope this will never be heard in X-Fi 2 !!!!!!

X-FI 2 is the same failure as X-FI IN drivers hardware xfi is great, so if you buy the new x-fi2 there will be the same crappy drivers as you use now.
Anyway, Please post spec, Because this is a hard problem to solve many things can make the Sound to crackle.
PSU = To low Watts for a system can make the soundcard crackle,
=2, sharing power with other devices like hard drivers floppy drivers etc.
= Not goot psu enough, bad quality psu can make this beli've me i had the same problem
= Quality cables to the soundcard, use a different rail if that is possible.
Bios = check for bios updates. even if there is none information about creative, sometimes it can help BUT READ INSTRUCTIONS on how to do it and what the stakes are if you do it wrong, and read the forums about the new bios, not allways new bios is good. IF you are a Asus user you should know why.
GFX = Place the soundcard (PCI) away from the grphics card, if you got ex 4pci slots and gfx pci express use the last slot for soundcard, if that dosnt work try 3,2, etc. but futher away from the graphics card should prevent EMI
X-FI= check the power slot in soundcard check for bendings etc.
I had this issue fixed it with new psu, had no idea first but after my ASPIRE TRIO 520w cought fire and i changed it to Antec 620w it allmost dissapeard, then i checked the power slot in X-FI and it was bent outwards, after carefully bending it back the crackle dissapread.
Now im using Cooler Master Real Power 850emba and using a different rail for the soundcard.
Hope you solve it, best regards Commander

  • I am having trouble with Logic 7 and my Motu 828mkII

I am running Logic Pro 7 with a MOTU 828mkII. Logic is not seeing the audio signal from any of the rear analog inputs on my 828. The 828 is receiving the signal and I have fiddled with cuemix to make sure everything is as it should be. Motu support said that it was a logic issue, in spite of that, I sent the unit back to them to fix it and it returned with the same issue, that it is working but logic is not. I am doing something wrong. . . please tell me what it is. thanks!

  • Sound Output from Logic Express 8 with new USB Guitar Pedal

Hello, everyone. I am guitarist. I have just bought an effects pedal from Vox called the Tonelab ST, which has a USB out. When I connect it to my G5, Logic sees it okay, and selects it as the audio device in the Preferences pane. The problem is that it shuts off my sound output and reroutes it through the USB pedal. If I hook the pedal up to my amp, I hear both. I tried adjusting the sound output through the System Preferences, but that is okay. If I start a different program (like iTunes) it plays through my system like normal. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You need some pro help. I'm only a stand-in while others aren't addressing your difficulties. I would suggest poring over the manual.
Some thoughts: I have seen demos of folks using multiple output options and switching among them. Me, i'm only using one input (my mixer) and one output (my mixer). I run my guitar into the mixer to record while running other tracks out to the mixer to monitor. When I've recorded a part I play back the entire thing through the mixer. I used a Firewire Solo (which I do not recommend) as the analog/digital converter between the mixer and computer. Now I'm using a little USB gizmo that came with my new Behringer mixer and i address is as "USB Audio Codec" in Logic.
So in Prefereces > Devices > Core Audio I have it set to "USB Audio Code" and this functions as BOTH my input and output. Well: How to get multiple outputs. I think you'll have to go to the part in the manual that addresses "Environments" and add another output mechanism, specificall distinguishing between your preferred output options.
In your above post you say you record something and it "sounds great". How are you monitoring this to conclude how it sounds? Outside of Logic? I asked whether you were routing your playback audio (of your "input 2") and you didn't say. It is routing to "Output 1-2". Does "Output 1-2" in the mixer display bounce up and down indicating output activity? Does the "Master" fader in the mixer display bounce indicating output activity?

  • Motu 828mkII Headphone Routing

Anyone with a Motu 828mkII who can tell me how and where you route your Mains (output 1-2) and phones (13-14) so that you get the same signal for monitoring/reference playback.
I'd like to check my mix in the phones but can't get signal without setting up another output pair, rerouting, etc.
I read another posting that encouraged the writer away from setting this up in Logic. I have tried my audio/midi settings and also the Motu settings with no avail.
    Any help would be great!

    Andy,
It sounds as if you have the Phones 'channel' in the MOTU Firewire Audio Application set to the wrong channels.
    Go to Applications>MOTU Firewire Console.
The bottom option is Phones. Set this to "Main OUT 1-2"
Click/Press the Volume knob on your MOTU
It will toggle between MAIN OUT and Phones. The level you route from Logic to Output 1-2 affects both these outputs.
    Hope this helps.

  • Motu 828MkII or Traveler

    Hey All
I am looking at purchasing either a Motu 828MkII or Traveler. I have read some of the threads on the board and I am starting to get discuraged! Is Motu No Good for Logic Pro? I really like the expandability and their features, but is it worth it? I am currently running a G5 1.8 Duo OS X (10.4.4) w/2Ghz and a M-Audio FW410. What do you all think? Motu or Not to Motu?

Hi Dave - know what you mean. Got an 896HD myself and it took a lot of getting used to from my 002, the top end is too harsh in comparison. But I'm used to it now. But then again, when mixing I do compensate for the sound it gives me (which isn't applied to mix-down). Not ideal, I know, but for the features, ease of use, the price I paid, I couldn't find anything better (and the fact MOTU are very quick at releasing updates for Apple OS is a real bonus). I suppose it's each to their own. But I agree with the point you made - check out what's available, listen to them and decide - but you MUST really listen on the monitors you're going to use with it.

  • Display freezing, sound output freezing if trackpad not used

    Hi
My display often freezes until i press the power key and click "cancel" in the "restart?" box. It happens less if the power cable is in. Also, the sound output sounds choppy, especially in itunes. I think these things are related, because neither seems to happen if there is some contact with the trackpad (if i'm moving the cursor or even just have my finger resting on it).
Does anyone have any idea why these things would happen? I reset my SMC but nothing seemed to happen.
    Cheers

    Hi,
Sorry, I have no solution - I just want to confirm that I've got the same problem:
    - MBPro freezes, mostly when running on battery. It does not freeze in any particular program or when doing something demanding. It just randomly stops working.
    - And, when recording - while on battery - popping noises occur.
    - And programs crashes constantly. Especially the ones that are in the background.
I bought the computer with extra RAM (3gb instead of 2gb) preinstalled. Could the RAM be the problem?
    Cheers

  • ITunes + Certain Soundcards = Pops/Clicks!

I've been messing all day trying to figure out this problem and have made some progress. Please could you also test:
Download CR 01 from here http://www.billy-corgan.com/index.php?page=mp3s (this is a downloadable FREE album by the smashing pumpkins). The file is 32mb and contains 4 songs.
Play them in iTunes(windows) and listen out for out random pops/clicks. I hear them in the first 30 seconds of track 1. I am using an RME HDSP 9632 soundcard which is a rather expensive pro audio card.
The same file played through Windows Media Player has no signs of any pops/clicks using the same soundcard.
Now if I change the audio output from the RME card to the motherboards onboard audio, the same file in Itunes does not have any clicks at all.
At first I thought my soundcard might be to blame but this can't be the case because it works perfectly fine with other media players. It's just iTunes(7.1.3.1) that causes these problems.
    Please test!

I'm sad to say I listened to the first 43 seconds of the first track. Now that I've finished vomiting, I can tell you that I didn't hear any click or pops (iTunes 7.2.0.35, Quicktime 7.1.6).
Try enabling safe mode in the Quicktime control panel, on the Audio tab. On my computer it sounds fine either way, but some people have better sound with safe mode enabled.
You may also want to upgrade your Quicktime (you can do that separately from iTunes, if you want).

  • Pops & Clicks not in source audio

    Hello,
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever experienced pops & clicks in a timeline, when the original audio sounds clean?
I'm using FCS2 and my timeline is a 960 x 720 Apple ProRes422 (HQ) as Compressor, 2 outputs of audio with a rate of 48.0KHz and audio format of 32bit floating point.
My source audio (which sounds fine) is mp3 which is also at 48.0KHz and 32bit floating point. It sounded fine in a DVCPro 720p60 timeline, but it sounds terrible in this 25fps timeline. I've re-imported and re-connected the audio clips with the source media, but I want to avoid going through each clip and trying to do the correction with STP.
    Does anyone have any advice?
    Lawrence

    Thanks guys,
I guess I just need to be more careful next time. AIFF only before importing. It's just that it sounded Ok, and imported fine into the project, so I didn't realize it would create a problem when moving it to another timeline. I'd already reconnected all files to the AIFF file (which took ages since I didn't know how to connect the entire batch of clips to the file at once), and everything sounds good now.
    Thanks again,
    Lawrence
