Sound panel cannot see external speakers

I have a couple year old imac upgraded to 10.5.8
I'm attempting to use external speakers via this path >> wireless to airport express >> optical to separate amp >> unpowered speakers. This used to work (maybe prior to upgrade to 10.5.8?), but now I
can get it to work ONLY using analog link from airport to amplifier, but not optical, and ONLY for iTunes. Itunes lets me select internal and externals speakers using the little icon on the lower right.
Video viewed via safari only allows internal speakers. If I go to preferences/sound/output it only shows the internal speakers as a selectable device. Could not find any way to add one so I assume if the system can't discover it you cannot add it.
I reinstalled Airport and tried to reset the PRAM (?). Neither hurt but didn't help either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't much care whether it's an analog or optical link to the amp, but I sure would like to hear internet sourced music via my external speakers.
thanks

I've tried each usb port and they still don't work.
So these are the older type that connect using USB, and not the "II" version that connects using the mini-stereo jack? I ask, because I thought USB version does not work with the latest Mac OS X. I guess it must work, based on what you wrote.
Since noticing this problem, have you shut down (powered off) the iMac and then started it back up? For hardware, shutting down is not the same as just restarting.
Some sound-related settings are stored in PRAM, so you can try resetting PRAM

  • Morese Code sound coming through my external speakers

Recently I've been getting Morse Code sounds coming through my external speakers. It's not all the time but at least 2-3 time a day. Any idea?

If I have my cel phone near my iMac, every now and then I get a sound that could be described as Morse code like. It has no lasting effects, so I don't worry much about it.

  • IPhoto cannot see external storage drive

Very unusual freeze-up while "repairing" iPhoto required a forced shut down.  Now cannot see external hard drive with photos on it.  Can you help please.

Have no idea the format of the external disk.  It plugs into the back of my big monitor and has worked perfectly until I upgraded to Yosemite and iPhoto 9.8 in late December.  I had difficulty setting up iPhoto at that time, and you fine folks walked me though the process in mid January.  All photos were there and in the proper albums.  External disk is a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex, and it is backed up on Mozy and also on an iPad Air 2.
Problem started when I simply plugged in my iPhone and iPhoto told me I had to repair my database, which I did -- it took some time.  Then I had to do something with Permissions.  That never ended and a Word document froze on screen while I was working on it, and when I couldn't close any tabs in Safari -- couldn't do anything, actually -- iPhoto was continuing to spin with Permissions.  Finally after about 15 minutes of that, I did a hard "push the start button" shutdown.  The restart took a very long time.
Since I installed Yosemite and got iPhoto working -- when it was working -- the entire computer has been a bit sluggish and slow.   And for the first time ever --and I've used Macs since the 1980s -- I had a freeze yesterday.  Likely unrelated, but just a data point.
(BTW, is there any way I can find the discussion I had w/you folks back when I setup this iPhoto in mid-January?  Anyway to search and find it in Support?)

  • System preferences -Sound does not see external USB speakers

The computer internal speakers are working OK but the problems come when I try to use external USB speakers. The previous volume problem of the imnternal speakers resolved itself.
I have now purchased a new USB set of speakers (BOSE Companion 20) but now they will only work through the "headphone" slot at the rear of my Imac and then only thru one speaker.(right)
I have reset the PRAM - anyway I followed all the instructions and it was not solved.
In "Sounds" in system preferences the Imac cannot see the USB speakers - it only recognises the internal speakers for output.
I think until "sounds" recognises the USB Speakers I will not get both speakers working.
I insert the USB speaker wiring pin in the Headphones slot at the back of the Imac and as mentioned sound only comes thru the right USB speaker  -nothing works when I put the pin in the speakers slot alongside the Headphones slot.
    Any help apprecaited

  • Cannot See Remote Speakers

Downloaded version 6 and can no longer see my remote speakers. Wife has an iBook and it sees the remote speakers so I know our wireless LAN is OK. I've disabled my Firewall and restarted my router and airport express and still cannot see the speaker selection box.
    Any thoughts?

Yep, all that checks out. I can stream music to the speakers from my iBook just fine, but the PC Desktop (with the big, fat hard drive filled with all our music) doesn't work as well. The PC won't see the external speakers. Running iTunes from the iBook, I can "see" the PC's music collection, but it only works for, say, ten to fifteen minutes and then the iBook "loses" the PC's music collection.
The PC is connected to an Airport Express for it's internet connection. The internet keeps working fine, so I know it's not a range issue. If I hard-connect the PC with an ethernet cable to the main Airport, I suspect it will work fine (haven't tried that since moving this summer, but it worked that way in the old place). Also, if I reset all the Airport Express components, essentially rebuilding the wireless network, then I suspect the PC will "see" the speakers for a short while and then lose them again. Haven't tried that in a few months, when I last got disgusted with the issue.
From what I read on here I suspect it's a bug with iTunes for Windows. Is there any way to send a bug report to Apple?

  • No sound from internal or external speakers

Imac 27" mid-2011 running Maverics 10.9.3  I'm not getting any sound from internal or ext. speakers.  I can hear the startup sound when booting up.
System Preferences->Sound only shows Digital Out for OUTPUT and Output Volume is maxed and can't be adjusted.  Mute is NOT checked.
I've done an SMC and PRAM reset with no change.  I've tried multiple times plugging and unplugging the external speaker cable jack.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

    Hey krawfo,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Looks like you are not getting sound from your speakers. I see you have tried different things to try and resolve this. This article is a good resource for this issue.

  • Cannot see external Monitor

I am using a Canopus ADVC-100 to connect to my external monitor. I used the easy setup so that I can use the monitor. I cannot see the video on the monitor while I am editing. However, if I use "Print to Video", I see the video on the external monitor.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Select View>Video Out>Refresh Video Devices.
If Canvas Playback is Selected the firewire out is effectively switched off.

  • Cannot see external HD attached to the Time Capsule

I cannot see the HD in Airport Utility under Hard Disks. I have connected the HD to my Mac and reformatted the drive to Mac Extended but when plugging it back into the TC it is not visible in the airport utility and therefore I cannot access it from any computer.
I have also tried restarting the TC and powering off/on. Nothing seems to work. Unless it is a software configuration on the TC I can only presume it might be the USB port on the TC which isn't working. Help!!

Sorry I should have mentioned that I have already tried that. That is how I noticed the Externa HD wasn't being recognised anymore. One day it was there and the next not.
I have now reformatted the External drive to Mac OS extended with the GUID partition. It still isn't recognised by the TC. I have also reset the TC back to Factory defaults but still doesn't work. My last chance is to attach another HD to the TC to see if it is the original External HD or the TC itself. I don't have a spare drive to do this so I will put my Macbook into "HD" mode and attach that.
If anybody else has some suggestions for me then please let me know otherwise the TC will have to go back to Apple for repair.

  • Can't see external speakers

I just connected my external speakers from an older G4 but no sound is coming out. I have checked and they don't show up on the system profiler.
    Any ideas would be cool
    Cheers

System Profile will not show you what speakers are connected to your Macbook.
Double check that they work, they're plugged in (if they need power), the cable is good and that you have the jack plugged into the line out and not the line in (line out has the 'headphone' icon above it). You can also look at System Preferences/Sound and make sure that 'Built in output' is selected. Make sure your volume is up too.

  • IVI_GetAttribute function panel: cannot see instr.spec. attribute

    Hi,
I recall the function panel for a Ivi_GetAttribute function,
f.e. Ivi_GetAttributeViString. To select an attribute for the 'Attribute ID' a window pops up: 'Select Attribute Constant'.
In that window I cannot see attributes that are specific to the particular instrument (the ones that begin with PREFIX_ATTR_). However in the Control Help for 'Attribute ID' it says that also instrument specific attributes can be selected here.
I checked my .c and .h file and everything is ok and in order for my instrument specific attributes.
Am I doing something wrong or is it simply not possible to select instrument specific attributes
in function panels for the Ivi_GetAttribute functions?
If so, does that mean I need to manually type in the name of the instrument specific attribute in the source code?
    Thanks for any help/hints,
    best regards,
    Marcus

From your post, I'm not sure I know if you're writing an instrument driver, or trying to use one to write a test application. If you are writing a test application, you should not be using the Ivi_SetAttribute and Ivi_GetAttribute functions. You should be using the Set- and GetAttribute functions that are part of the instrument driver you're using - in this case, norma5xx_SetAttribute<type> and norma5xx_GetAttribute<type>. These functions should be in the driver's function panel, and should include all of the driver specific attributes.
The functions defined in the ivi.lfp function panel are primarily meant to be used when writing an instrument driver. That function panel and associated sub file define all of the general attributes which all drivers are expected to support. However, there's no way for that function panel to know about the attributes that are specific to your particular driver. They will only show the inherent attributes, because that is all they know about. You can use those functions with other attribtute IDs when writing a driver, at which point you would have to enter the IDs yourself. If you want to still use the function panels to inject the function calls into your code, but need to use an identifier not in the supported list, you can press Ctrl-T to turn all of the ring, slide, and boolean controls on the function panel into text boxes where you can enter whatever identifiers you wish.

  • No sound coming out of external speakers

Here's my situtation. I just recently received my MacBook and I wanted to connect my external speakers that I used with my previous PC laptop. It worked perfectly with the PC laptop. When I plug in the speaker cord into the port, no sound comes out of the external speakers. But sound comes out of the internal MacBook speakers.
I plugged it in the right port.
Volume is on both in the MacBook and the external speakers.
    Speakers are on.
Speakers worked fine with my PC laptop.
What can i do? The connection is fine because it was just plugged in my PC laptop and they were working. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the reply. This is what i tried...its really weird but it works.
I plugged in the speaker plug into the port with the headphone symbol and now sound comes out of the speakers! (Maybe this was the correct port in the first place! Sorry for the newbie mistake.) I was used to ports being color coded and I just plugged in the green speaker cord into the green port on my PC.
So the port on the left is for audio in right?
And the port with the headphone symbol is for headphones and speaker (audio out)
When I go to to System Preferences, it recognizes the speakers as "Headphones". But I don't think that really matters.
Thanks for the help. I have sound now coming out of my external speakers.

  • Sound problem - internal or external speakers

I have a mini and a USB hub (Belkin) with a USB headset (Plantronics) connected to it, and then a display (FujitsuSiemens) with speakers connected to the sound port on the mini.
My problem is that some applications (Safari, RealPLayer, MS Remote Desktop) favors the headset for sound out, others (iTunes, Mail, well most apps actually) chooses the speakers in the display which I'm very pleased with.
System Preferences states sound out in the internal speakers, but obviosly it doesn't really work with som apps so my question is: why, why, why Mr Anderson...
Is it some plist that has gone heywire or do I need to reset some weird PRAM or what ever...

You may need to reset PRAM/NVRAM.
First, check that the jack is clean. Put some alcohol on a plug and insert it a few times. See if that helps.
is your output both digital and analog? If digital, is the red laser light visible in the socket? Do not look directly into the socket when checking.
If all else fails try a PRAM reset:
    Reset your computer’s PRAM
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
DO NOT HOLD These keys beyond the second startup sound!
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
