Sound peaks at multitrack angle cuts, strange icon

Hi.
Setup: MBP Retina, 2,6GHz, 16 GB RAM; OSX 10.8.3; storage on external WD Thunderbolt HD; FCPX 10.0.8 (but problem originates in the previous version)
Project: A 100 min concert with 5 cams and audio track, synced with PluralEyes 3
Problem:
A few of the angle cuts half-way into the finished project suddenly developed sound peaks (more than 16 db), starting a few frames before the cut. While cutting, everything acted normal. Using a standard cross dissolve, "both sides" of the fade before the cut has the same syndrome (making manual adjusting next to impossible). The affected angle cut can no longer be deleted, but can be shifted back and forth. The sound peak shifts with the cut. Changing angles has no influence on the peak. The audio wave form shows no anomaly in the area.
The affected angles show a small icon in the audio track next to the cut, when hovered over with the select tool (see picture).
Most of the angle cuts are OK, but the affected ones really stick out. The uncut audio track has no peaking in the affected areas (either in the original or in the Angle Editor), and peaking only occurs at the cuts. (BTW, I had a couple of green frames early on in the project, but they were comparatively easy to deal with.)
Any idea what has happened, what that icon is, and suggestions what can be done to get rid of the problem (short of recutting everything...)?
Looking forward to your comments!
Cheers,
Tom

Hi again.
I should have mentioned, that the problem affects the shared version of the project as well...
In the meantime I have found a relatively simple work-around to avoid the peaks in the final result: in a similar way that a slip edit can be achieved in multitrack, I muted the audio in all but the first (unaffected) angle cut, expanded the audio for this one and extended its audio track duration to cover the full project, and collapsed the audio again. It's not pretty, but it works.
I'm still interested to hear if there are better solutions, and above all, what went wrong in the first place...
Cheers,
Tom

  • Powerbook won't get past strange icon upon start-up

    Hi,
I have a Powerbook G4 that will not go past this strange icon when I try to start it up. I get the traditional Mac start-up sound, then it takes a long time to do anything, then I get a small icon that is in the shape of a folder. It has the Mac face (it is still "happy") and it will pop a question mark up over the folder.
Last night, it was making a strange noise, so I ran the Disk Utility and it said the hard drive appeared to be OK. This morning, it will not go past the icon. Is it saveable? It is pretty old (6 years).

Your hard drive is dieing or possibly dead! Unplug all peripherals, let the machine cool down and persist in starting up. It 'may' boot so you can back up your data. Try booting from the OS disc and run the Utilities to see if it can repair the issue. There are a few third party apps that may help in recovering data from the disc, but there are no guarantees they will work and, of course, they are not free. Sorry, no joy or easy fix for this one.

  • Strange Icon (Sad Ipod) won't respond

My Ipod first froze when I chose a song last night. Now when I turn it on, the ipod shows the apple icon. After a few seconds of the apple icon and some "clicking" noises (as if the hard drive keeps on trying to restart), the strange icon (Sad Ipod) shows up. Whenever I try to restart, put into disk mode, and reset my ipod, the same strange icon shows up. I tried to restore my Ipod by plugging it in my laptop but "iPod updater" keeps on telling me that I need to plug my ipod in.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your sad iPod icon and whirring/clicking sounds issue is most likely related to your iPod’s hard drive being out of place or corrupt in some way. You may want to get your iPod’s hard drive replaced, but before that, let’s try some things with your iPod.
Have you checked out these links about your issue?

  • Why is the sound of my new ipad cutting out intermittently and what does Apple recommend to solve the problem in lieu of any updates?

Why is the sound of my new ipad cutting out intermittently and what does Apple recommend to solve the problem in lieu of any updates? All of a sudden without changing any settings, the audio on my NEW ipad cuts in and out on applications/ games, keypad noise and lock sounds. The rocker button only seems to work while the sound is intermittently being heard before, after a few seconds of noise not doing anything when sound goes off.
This is highly frustrating as I've noticed others posting about such issues as far back as April. Anybody had the same thing happen to them? Is this likely software (ios6) or hardware issue? What are the solutions Apple???

Apple has no physical stores of their own in Dubai, so unless you mean that you purchased from the online Apple Store for the UAE, you purchased from a dealer, who may or may not have been authorized. You can check the expiration date of the warranty on your iPad yourself by entering in the serial number here:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
If it does indeed show the warranty has expired, then what you need to do from here will depend on who you purchased the iPad from and when you really did purchase it. Perhaps you actually purchased it in August and are just misremembering? Check your receipt. If you confirm that you did purchase within the last calendar year, tell us exactly where you got it and we can probably offer advice.

  • The sound on my iPhone 4S cuts out when playing music/podcasts.

The sound on my iPhone 4S cuts out when playing music/podcasts.  If I unplug and replug in the headphones, the sound comes back on, but often for only 20 seconds or so before cutting out again.  Sometimes it will play for 15-20minutes before cutting out.  The track is not "paused", and appears to continue, just no sound.  I tried cleaning the headphone jack with compressed air to no avail.  I also noticed the the same phenomenon occurs when I sync my bluetooth to my car audio.  That is, it will play for a while, then the sound will cut out, even though the track is still shown to be playing.  If I reset the bluetooth, the sound comes back on.
This started happening about a week ago, but no "event" that I can think of caused it.  I didnt' get the phone wet, forcefully drop it, or leave it in extreme heat.  I've tried doing a reset of the phone.  I also was running iOS5 when I first noticed this, and since upgraded to iOS6.  The problem appeared with both.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

One thing that helped was getting a toothbrush and scrubbing the dock connector on the phone.  I scrubbed the connector and used compressed air for about 1/2 hour till the connector looked much cleaner.  An Apple employee told me that the pins on the phone had a little corrosion and sand.  The problem hasn't gone away completely, but has been significantly reduced.  I'm going to hold out until my contract expires after which time I'll switch to an iPhone5 (or newer) or Android phone.

  • Strange icon during shutdown...

Does anyone else have a strange icon flash on the display for a fraction of a second during shutdown? I running 10.5.1 on my 15" MBP 2.16 Core Duo and have noticed a real weird icon that only shows up occasionally during shutdown. It usually blinks on and off too fast to really see what it is, but I think it is sort of like the symbol on the command key and has a red X across it. I don't have any issues with the MBP with the exception of some files that Disk Utility is having trouble with when I repair permissions which seems to take a long time. It gets to a point where it says time remaining is less than a minute, but keeps going and going for another 3-5 minutes after displaying this:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”

Anyone seen this before or have any thoughts?

    Thanks for the tip.
I did as you suggested and the permissions issue is fully resolved. Never had an issue using the Software Update pane, but I'll file the in my overloaded brain for another time.
I haven't seen the strange icon during shutdown again, but I did identify it as the icon for a piece of software called KeyCue. It shows keyboard shortcuts for the active application by holding down the Command key for about 2 seconds.
    Thanks again!

  • Strange icon behavior

Since purchasing an iMac with Snow Leopard pre-installed, I've experienced a series of strange ‘icon bugs’, and the problem has persisted through to the latest 10.6.4 update.
Bug #1: Occasionally icons on the desktop will become pixelated and blocky, resembling MacOS 9 sized icons that have been over-magnified. If I restart the Mac or log out and back in again the problem will go away, at least until the next random occurrence. The problem seems to particularly affect icons for inserted CDs and DVDs, but I’ve also seen it occur with application and file icons.
Bug #2: Sometimes icons will disappear completely by becoming transparent. This has affected all kinds of file types, but particularly files that have been freshly downloaded to the desktop from Safari. I can resolve the problem by dragging the affected file into a freshly created folder and then back onto the desktop, at which point the icon reappears.
Bug #3: About 50% of the time I insert a USB thumb drive or mount a DMG disk image, the icon displayed on the desktop will be for a hard drive (i.e. the one used for the internal hard drive) and not the white icon normally used for mounted images.
These bugs only occur on the desktop. They never occur in other folders or in list view. I cannot isolate the cause to any particular task or process. Sometimes they happen immediately after a re-boot.

Create a new User go to System Preferences > Accounts > "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try going to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and move com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.desktopservices.plist to the trash. Restart and test. You may have to reset some Desktop settings.
If that didn't work, start up in Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your Desktop icons function correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

It's weird, but within system preferences, i have a strange icon which seems to be corrupt. the icon is the startup disc icon. it seems to have enlarged and the words "start up disc" have disappeared, because the icon has enlarged. Regards, Leigh

    Hi Leigh!
    Get Pacifist...
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
then extract what you need from your Install Disk.
    But 1st do these...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then boot from the HD, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.

  • Set default import format when drag and drop sound file into multitrack view?

I've looked around the preference panels but cannot find where to set the import settings for dragging and dropping sound files into multitrack view. Some of our computers have correct settings and others do not. Thanks for your help!
    G

I should have been more specific, sorry... I mean bit depth and bit rate... On some machines this defaults correctly and on other machines it is wrong. Not sure how to set these to downconvert properly by default. Unless it automatically takes the format of the source file, in which case it's just been luck.
    Thanks,

  • Strange icon in Hierarchy palette

    Hi all
I got a form to make some changes in and I came across that strange icon (image atteched) I wondered what it means.
It's the form named 'matirial_data' - looks like a regular form with lines in it.
It doesn't seem to behave differently so it doesn't realy bother me, I'm just curious,
    Thanks
    shai.

    found the answer:
This icon shows that the form's content is flowed and it shows the flow direction (western text/top to bottom).
    In example:
the form 'Signature' content is 'positione',
the form 'commentsForm' is 'flowed' - 'western text'
the form 'dataform is 'flowed' - 'top to bottom'
    Thanks to all
    Shai.

  • Strange icon appears in the menu bar randomly

I'm using a late '13 macbook pro retina and recently I've noticed that a strange icon will popup in the menu bar somewhat randomly, though it seems to appear most when I access certain websites (ebay is the one I've noticed it happen the most).
The icon is between the power level and the date and time and appears in the spot where the keyboard language icon usually is. When I try to click the icon nothing happens and it just opens the language drop down menu. It disapears after a few seconds but when it appears a strange black flicker will appear at the top of my screen just below the menu bar.
    Thanks

    In ->System Preferences->Keyboard, Uncheck:

  • Strange icon-circle w/ diagonal line-starting up w/ Panther install disc 1

I just installed a new hard drive in my Powerbook G4; I used the Tiger upgrade disc to format the hard drive using disc utility. This proceeded without issue. Then, I restarted, ejected the Tiger upgrade disc and inserted Panther install disc 1; first I see the Apple logo, then all I see is a strange icon that looks like the universal icon for "do not" as used with traffic signs (a circle with a diagonal line) and that is it! What does this mean?

    Hi Gary!
"...I used the Tiger upgrade disc to format the hard drive..."
May I ask why you used the Tiger disc, and not a Panther disc?
"I restarted with the original install disc containing 10.3.5 and the OS install worked fine,..."
Did you reformat the HD with this installation?
