Sound Preferences don't work

I recently had my hard drive replaced by Apple Care due to a crash. I received my MAC and it's running MAC OS 10.4.9.
All of my sound alerts are not happening. I tried resetting my sound preferences and it doesn't work. I ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions.
Does anyone know of any other things I should try to fix this?

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. MultiMix Settings preferences don't work on an Intel Based Mac

I've downloaded the latest drivers from Alesis for my Alesis Firewire 12 Audio Mixer (supposedly for Snow Leopard) but get the message MultiMix Settings preferences don't work on an Intel Based Mac- any help would be appreciated.

Quit Safari.
Hold the shift key down and relaunch Safari.
Reset Safari.
Launch Safari
Click Safari in the menu bar.
From the drop down select "Reset Safari".
Uncheck the box beside "Remove stored name and passwords"
Click "Reset".
Empty Caches
Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.
Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Delete safari .plist file.
Quit all applications.
Option click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
Select "Library" from the drop down.
Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist
Right click it and select "Move to Trash".
Restart.

P755 and Realtek HD Audio Manager sound effects don't work

Hi. I have a P755 and the Realtek HD Audio Manager sound effects don't work. Everything seems to be up to date, but the equalizer and environment features have never worked. I am using the Analog stereo out. The Speaker Configuration is Stereo. The only thing that seems to change the audio characteristics is switching from Headphone to Line Out.

Changing sound preferences doesn't work until I restart?

So the new mail sound for a particular mail account, I want to change. I change it to "off" (no sound) and when I get an email it still makes the sound it used to. If I restart the phone then it works correctly and I won't hear a sound when I get a new email. Is this how it should work? Changing a setting in preferences doesn't work till you restart the phone?

Well, the 'chirping' certainly isn't a hard drive! I don't know what it could be... the only thing that I can suggest is that you take your computer to your local Apple Store and have them diagnose the problem. The diagnosis should be free as will an estimate for repair (if you're out of warranty).
Something's obviously not right but as the only moving parts in the retina models are the fans, you may have a problems with the fans. As to the problems with the keyboard, let the Apple techs figure that one out.

After this week Mac OsX update combined 10.7.3. System Preferences don't work

All items in system preferences don't get saved/applied. By now the dock doesn't appear on my screen, dashboard and spaces tabs don't work, desktop and screen saver don't save changes or apply so desktop is grey. Trackpad functions don't work.
Any idea on how to fix this? Thanks.

Few have solved this problem by repairing disk
or reinstalling Lion using Recovery HD.

System preferences don't work

I upgraded to Mavericks and I 'm having few problems, sigh
I have since MLion 5 different desktop screens
I assigned different applications to each screen:
Safari opens in the second screen, Mail in the first and so on.
When I restart my prefs are gone. All apps open in the first screen or on the desktop where I am in that moment.
Another even more annoying bug is that
if I lock the screen saver in System Prefs , Security Privacy, General, it locks
but then if I uncheck the radio button “Require password”
it keeps asking for the password every time the computer sleeps.
I already tried to reset the PRAM, throw away those preferences
com.apple.finder.plist,
com.apple.systempreferences and
com.apple.screensaver.
and restart. They were the most recent ones in my user prefs folder, presumably the one changed
Nothing changed.
Of course I repaired the permissions, restart and repaired my permissions from the recovery disk
If I restart with password required
it will stay like that till I restart
and if it's not required it will not be possible to change my preference when I would like.
It looks like my system preferences don't accept changes as they did before upgrading to Mavericks.
Some do but some, like the one I mentioned above, don't
I'm guessing there is something broken somewhere that does not let me keep my prefs the way I want
Any suggestion?

Do you use Mission Control?
I think this the new version of altered desktops.
About require "password"
In the settings you can change settings without unlocking (this might be a bug) try to unlock first and then make your changes.

I use Windows for gaming (in virtualbox) on America's Army, so good audio is a must when you play against the best.
The reason I state that is because those lack the features I need. I am trying to find gnome-sound-properties and since I needed sound working very fast, and a distro that already has it installed, I am currently on Ubuntu (please do not harass me or insult me about this as I hate it very much and I need to get back to software development) since all I need to do is go to System > Preferences > Sound. Is a picture of what I am looking for:

Solved. all i needed to do was turn up the center and surround thing in alsamixer. works now in true 5.1

I have surround sound speakers and mine are working fine with iTunes 7. Now, I don't want to state the obvious, but my surround sound speakers have a bass box attached and the leads go into the back and sometimes they come loose. You've probably already checked this but I thought it worth a a mention.

Sound effects don't work

I am using iPad 2. It all works fine except for one thing. I have lost all sound effects. I can watch a YouTube clip and there is sound? however any sound involved in the running of the iPad or any apps does not work. I have tried many things but to no avail.
The keyboard doesn't click, there is no locking sound when I close the cover or charge the iPad. I read lots of Zinio magazines and ones like the national geographic are interactive with sound. There is no sound on Zinio anymore. The alarm clock does work and the alarm sounds. So I am most confused. Why do some things have sound and not others.
I hope someone can help. It has been like this for awhile. I have just updated to iOS 7 but the problem still exists. Any suggestions to try would be appreciated. I have tried rebooting. I have an idea that this problem has only happened since the revamp on the iPad interface with the previous upgrade.

Well I don't believe it. I have solved my own problem after months of having it. I had the side button selected to mute. I was still able to change the volume so figured that this is what it was for. I changed the side button to lock orientation. However it still works as a volume button and I now have all my sound effects back. I am confused as to why it works like this but the fact that I now have the sound I want I am happy regardless.
I will leave this post in case it helps someone else.

Desktop and Screensaver Preferences worked perfectly until the latest update, 10. 5. 7 were installed.
I tried every suggestion and approach to solve this problem, nothing worked. So I reinstalled 10 .5
and it works perfectly again. What changes were made in the 10.5.7 combo that would cause this problem? J. Weigel

They work fine on my computers also.
If it occurs again, see if it also happens in a newly created User Account. If it doesn't, there is probably a corrupt preference file. If that's the case, return to your usual User account and remove all the .plist files with screensaver or desktop in them from the folder
Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
including any .plist files in the ByHost folder in that Preferences folder.
If it does occur in another Users Account, you will probably need to do an Archive & Install from the install disk.

Surround sound speakers don't work help

I recently bought a new sony bravia t.v. and a sony all in one blu-ray disc/dvd all in one home theater system. We cannot get the surround sound speakers to work watching regular television. JUANGONZ is correct. The easiest way to get the surround is to take an optical cable from the cable box to the input on the back of the Sony receiver. You will have to change the input on the Sony to digital in. Make sure you have Dolby Digital enabled on the cable box settings. Also important is that most standard definition content is broadcast in stereo, usually only high definition is broadcast in 5.1 surround.
If you can stop in at your local Best Buy, I am sure they would be happy to show you on a display unit, or setup an appointment to have a Geek Squad Installer connect your components if you would like.

Dropped my Satellite M30X - now sound & WLan don't work

I dropped my Satellite M30X on the carpet, and now the sound and wireless connection no longer work. (The wireless switch light doesn't turn on when I turn the switch on.)
Is this a repairable problem or do I need to purchase a new computer? Please let me know.

I spoke with the computer tech support team in my area, and they mentioned that I should have a wireless card installed instead of having the wireless switch replaced. However, repairing the sound is a more complex issue. I would need to have the hard drive replaced, and it would cost me $425.
Not want to spend so much money, I then looked up prices for hard drives online to get a second opinion. It was then, that I discovered (by accident) that an audio card could be used to fix sound unable to be heard from headphone outlets and broken wireless connections. Will an audio card restore sound unable to be heard from my computer's built-in speakers, or is this a problem that replacing the mother board can only resolve? Please let me know.
