Sound Preferences Problem

My USB Headset shows up twice for both the input and output in the Sound Preferences panel.
If I disconnect it from my hub, one entry disappears from the list but the other one remains.
It works for most things when I select the right one from the list, but I use the speech recognition program iListen and I can't get that program to work no matter which one I choose using the 'Set Up My microphone' menu command.
I have created another user to see if that would fix the problem but that didn't work either.
I have looked for any prefs files that I could delete and can't find anything.
Is there a program that will let you remove items from the Sound prefs pane?
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
I am handicapped and I rely on that program a lot. Thanks

I thought those prefs were in the following file, but if another user didn't change it at all then must not be...
Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.GlobalPreferences.(12 digit number).plist
So, I'm gonna guess dragging this file to the Desktop & rebooting...
/Library/Preferences/com.GlobalPreferences.plist

    Thanks for the suggestions. Results:
Resetting PRAM has made no difference.
The Sound preferences were correct, ie set to 'selected output device' in sound effects but still default to Soundflower under the output tab after restart rather than to the available outputs. I do understand the change when external speakers are attached but the computer still opens to Soundflower consequently giving no sound when playing movie clips for example.
This is a new MBPro (March 2010) with Migration assistant used to copy software & files & settings from the backup I had. The problem didn't exist in the replaced machine. I've used Software Update to apply all updates. I'm wondering whether one of the updates has caused this problem as there are occasionally glitches with downloads/updates for individual users.

  • Why does my internal speakers no longer show up in my sound preferences?

In February, I updated my MBP 15" to 10.7.3. After restarting my system, the internal speakers were no longer listed in my available outputs under my sound preferences. I wasted an hour of my time talking to phone support only to hear the same stuff I had found online to try to troubleshoot the problem. Finally they told me to go to the Genius Bar. I went to my local Apple store where they proceded to look at it for about an hour and in the end told me the way to fix it would be to just wipe the harddrive and reinstall OS X. I couldn't afford to do that at the time due to needing the computer for grad school and chose to wait till after school let out to do this. Now I have wiped the harddrive twice and reinstalled and STILL don't have sound.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to try to fix this?

It's a longshot, but you could try this:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

  • Sound Preferences: switches from Internal Speakers to Digital Out

I've been having this problem recently. I sent the computer off to Apple a few weeks ago and it helped for a while, but no longer.
My computer has a problem with it's sound output jack or something. Without inserting anything into the plug, the Sound will change for "Internal Speakers" to "Digital Out" and to "Built-in Output" in the Sound Preferences Panel.
    Any suggestions?

I have a 4 month old macbook and experiencing the same problem. Just realized it after installing itunes 8 and since then having a stuttering audio playback problem too. When i plug my headphones into the audiojack the sound switches from headphones to speakers and back as well as itunes playing tracks in a stop and go mode. I repaired the rights several times, installed quicktime 7.5.5 again, reinstalled itunes 8 and for sure running the latest leopard version 10.5.5.
Also thought it could be a hardware problem but after reading this it seems more software related.
    Any idea?

How can I get my Logitech H600 microphone to be recognized in my Sound Preferences as an input device?
Logitech replaced my H600 wireless headphones after they were unable to overcome the problem.
My MacAir internal microphone works, but when I switch to the Logitech device, there is no recognition of my voice.

It also takes time for the photos to be transferred out of your iPhone and into Photo stream on Apple's iCloud servers.
Note that this can't happen if your iPhone is not connected to a WiFi network:
When you enable My Photo Stream on your devices, all new photos you take or import to those devices will be automatically added to your photo stream.
iOS devices: New photos you take are automatically uploaded to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and are connected to Wi-Fi. My Photo Stream does not push photos over cellular connections.
Macs: Any new photos you import to iPhoto or Aperture begin uploading automatically when you have a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Or you can change your iPhoto or Aperture preferences so that only photos you manually add to My Photo Stream are uploaded.
PC with iCloud Control Panel 2.0 or later: Open a Windows Explorer window and under Favorites select iCloud Photos if you are using iCloud Control Panel 3.0 (or Photo Stream if you are using 2.0 to 2.1.2). Open My Photo Stream. Click the "Add photos" button. Select the photos to import to My Photo Stream, then click Open.

  • Changing OSX default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences

When I change the default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences within OSX, it is back at the lower level at the next listening session the following time I use iTunes on my Mac Mini. Within System Preferences there is a section that lets you "choose a device for sound output" but the only choice I have is "line-out" and under the "port" heading there is only "built-in output"--no other choices are shown. I have external speakers attached which I like to use for listening to music as I work. What is the problem? Why won't the higher volume I set remain? Also, shouldn't more than one choice be shown for sound output?

This sounds like the problem that I'm experiencing and <a href-"http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2694517#2694517">aske d about a couple of days ago. The sound level resets to 50% after shutdown.
I tried setting the levels in Audio MIDI Set Up as suggested above, but that hasn't changed anything.
In answer to B_web, I am running my external speakers through the headphone jack.
    So, any other suggestions?

  • Sound preference issue with Snow Leopard?

    I have a late 2009 13" Macbook Pro -
I've been very late in updating from Leopard to Snow Leopard, even though the latter came out a month after I bought my laptop, but this weekend, I finally did.
My mac has the 'red light' problem in the headphone jack and I've been unable to fix it, so I use external USB speakers. However, now that I've updated to Snow Leopard, the sound preferences refuse to keep the USB speakers as the output for sound.  I'll open system preferences, select the speakers, but in a few seconds, it automatically just switches back to the internal speakers as the output. It doesn't stay.
I've been searching through forums for help, and came across the instruction to delete the two files in the Audio folder, which hasn't fixed it.
    Any ideas?
If you need further clarification, just ask.

Do you know how to check for errors in the logs?
Using System Profiler, take a look on the left and open the logs there...

  • Can't uncheck 'mute' in sound preferences

Suddendly today there's no sound coming from my computer, not in different browsers, or different forums. Went to Sound Preferences and "mute" is checked. But it won't let me uncheck.

My MBP unexpectedly developed a similar problem.
I ran Tech Tool Pro and it fixed the problem.
Try running Apple's Disk Utility and repair permissions and see if that corrects the problem.

My MacBook Pro has no audio.  Sounds preferences showing output is Optical digital-out port.  How do I change this to built-in speakers?

I experienced this same problem yesterday on my MacBook Pro,  still searching for a solution, several other posts here indicate people have been experiencing this since at lease 2007.  I have  yet to find a clear solution.
It appears that occasionally inserting headphone causes this, it turns on the Optical digital-out port feature (red light glows inside the headphone port) and takes away the internal speakers option.   Restarting did not restore it, but for some reason after sitting asleep overnight the sound started working again and the internal speaker option return in the Sound - Output Window, and the Optical Digital-out option went away.
Here is another post with some ideas on this

  • Sound input problem with Skype earbud

Just trying out Skype, and using a wired earbud I got free. The earbud is Skype branded, and has 2 minijacks - one is headphone and one is microphone.
When it's plugged in, if I go into Sound preferences there is no input if I choose Line In (rather than built in microphone). I have made sure the input level is turned up.
Any ideas? I will check if the earbud works with any other devices, as I suspect they're quite cheaply produced!
Update: just checked another headset that's the same and it doesn't work either. Neither work with our iMac. It's interesting that they seem to be incompatible.

Did you get this problem resolved?
I am having the same problem: unable to input sound....

  • Airport express doesnt show up under sound preferences

    Hello there,
I have a macbook air (2010 model) and run osx 10.8.6
with itunes i can choose to stream audio via airport express, but if I check my sound preferences, airport express does'nt show up. And I would like to stream music from Spottify as well.
(by the way, alt-bitton and pressing volume doesn't do the trick either).
    Any suggestions? Thanks, Layana

I have exactly the same problem with the same osx 10.8.6 on a Macbook pro. Heeelp!

  • Sound preferences - new odd behaviour

historically i have never experienced this issue - only in the last few weeks . . . i am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an iMac
Previously whenever I pulled out the Headphone Jack, the sound would automatically revert to internal speakers
However, of late, whenever I take the jack out - no sound comes from the internal speakers
I tried going to Sound Preferences and manually re-selecting Internal Speakers for the Output but still no joy
Trial and Error messing around led me to a work around - 1. Remove Headphone Jack 2. Shutdown 3. Restart
which is fine for a temp fix but it's starting to get annoying of course
I have not updated my machine recently and neither have I updated Logic so I am not sure of cause
Has anyone any ideas what is going on in this instance please ?
Any tips to sort it out ?
    thanks

the new appletv does not officially support being connected via DVI (which is essentially what you are doing - the amp is acting as an HDMI to DVI convertor).
some people have had success converting to DVI, but it's not supported and may result in problems (which you are having).
There is no "DVI is not supported" with HDMI; this is from the hdmi.org website:
    Q. Is HDMI backward compatible with DVI (Digital Visual Interface)?
Yes, HDMI is fully backward compatible with DVI compliant devices. HDMI DTVs will display video received from existing DVI-equipped products, and DVI-equipped TVs will display video from HDMI sources. However, some older PCs with DVI are designed only to support computer monitors, not televisions. Consumers buying a PC with DVI should make sure that it specifically includes support for television formats and not just computer monitors.
Also, consumers may want to confirm that the DVI interface supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), as content that requires HDCP copy protection will require that both the HDMI and DVI devices support HDCP to properly view the video content.
this may not be the answer you want to hear, but essentially apple don't guarantee any connection apart from 100% HDMI.
Because there is something wrong with the current version of the ATV 2 Software; I hope the upcoming iOS 4.3 will fix this.

  • G4 Sound preferences issues

I have not been able to switch from the headphone setting in sound preferences back to the external speakers which I have plugged into the back slot. There isn't an option anymore in sound preferences showing external speakers, only headphones. How do I fix these issues?

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Your speakers work properly don't they?
As long as they do, there isn't a problem.
The Sound preferences will not change because the Built in audio is named Headphones in the System Preferences by OS X.
My Harmon Kardon Soundsticks have been "Headphones" forever, through 3 OS X versions and 4 different G4 machines.

  • USB-powered Speakers and Sound Preferences

I have two Mac mini's (one intel, one powerPC) both running the latest version of OS 10.4 and both have USB speakers which I allow the computer to power (rather than a separate external power). On both computers I have the same problem; when I reboot, the sound preferences in System Preferences changes back to the output volume being exactly in the middle, if I adjust the output volume and then reboot, I'm back to the output volume being in the middle, rather than as I set it before the reboot. How can I change the output volume of these USB speakers so that it stays even after a reboot?
I've never had this problem with externally powered speakers.
