Sound problem after repair

Hi
I have just received my Imac back from being repaired (an uneven screen colour problem).
On turning on the machine it was obvious the sound was distorted, on investigation it seems only from the right hand speaker.
I suspect it will have to go back again, but just wondered if anyone has any suggestions?
Thanks
Steve

It is quite possible that Apple somehow damaged your iMac's speakers when you sent it in to be fixed. Apple makes you agree to a disclaimer saying that they are not responsible for damage to your Mac. But there is good news. There are many great speaker systems that you can get for a moderate price instead of paying to get your standard speakers fixed. I just bought Harman Kardon: Soundsticks III speakers and i love them. You get a large powerful subwoofer and 2 speakers with a surprising amount of volume. They come in around $169.95, which is not bad for the incredible, crisp, and clear sound I receive out of my speakers. I would eliminate the service charge by buying these speakers. That way, you not only have solved your speaker issue, but you have eliminated your pesky service charge. If you don't feel like buying these speakers, then look in system preferences under sound. Go to output and make sure that the balance is in the middle and not all the way to the left.

  • Pismo Sound Problems after Sleep in Tiger

Hi all. New to the forums and returning to Macs after years of cursing Bill Gates. Picked up a Powerbook Pismo from a friend and have been having some fun with it, but I have one problem I can't solve. I replaced the hard drive (saved the old one) and installed Tiger and 1GB of memory on the machine. All seemed well until I noticed that the sound would not work sometimes after sleeping. The sound will usually return with a reboot, but sometimes I'll have to actually turn the machine off, and clear the PRAM to get the sound to come back. Sometimes, the volume and screen controls will both not work at all (pop up doesn't even appear when the keys are pressed), sometimes it's just that the sound doesn't work, but everything looks right on the screen. I've also had the sound and screen buttons not work only to have pop ups suddenly appear and the adjustments happen several minutes after I pressed the keys. So far I've tried:
    Clearing the PRAM
    Checked the Pram Battery (ok)
    Reinstalled Tiger (Still loses sound)
Downgraded to 10.3 (problem persists, and seems worse)
In system information on Tiger it says "there was an error when retrieving that information" when you click on the sound hardware.
The machine is a 500mhz Pismo with a 48gig drive and 1 gig of Memory (133mhz, would that cause this sort of problem?)
I have not tried going back to OS9 to see if the disappearing sound resolves as I don't currently have an OS9 disk.
This sure seems like a software problem, but I'm starting to wonder. I really like this machine and want to get it to work! Help!

    Maxstang, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you repair permissions after you installed Tiger? Have you updated Tiger to 10.4.11?
Here's the Sound troubleshooting info in the Pismo Service Manual.
    No sound from speaker(s)
    1. Verify mute mode is not enabled (F6 on the keyboard).
    2. Check the volume setting in the Sound control panel.
    3. Verify no external speakers or headphones are plugged in.
    4. Reset PRAM.
    5. Make sure speaker cable is plugged into sound card.
    6. Replace sound card.
    7. Replace speakers (part of the top case).
    8. Replace I/O logic board
Startup sound is heard, then no sound from speaker(s)
    1. Remove sound preferences from System Folder, reset PRAM,
    then restart.
    2. Perform clean installation of system software.
Had the Pismo previously had OS X installed. There's a firmware update (Boot ROM version 4.1.8) that should be installed prior to installing OS X. However, when I got my Pismo with Tiger installed, the firmware was not updated (have since updated). However, I don't think this could be the cause of your problem, since I had no sound problems when the update was not installed.
The PC133 RAM (which runs at 100MHz) should not be the problem. I have PC133 RAM in my Pismo.
Since you replaced the HD, could you have disturbed the connection to the Sound Card. The Sound Card is located to the upper-right of the HD. Here's a helpful laptop site.

  • Sound problems after iOS 4.2 upgrade

Experiencing very poor sound quality after iOS 4.2 upgrade. Bad eq, left channel dropping out, sounds like heavy reverb. Exists with iPod and pandora apps. Tried adjusting eq in settings. Any one else having problems?

Yep I just upgraded to new OS 4.2 on iPhone 4 and I get this static buzz sound when talking to people it's really annoying and sound quality is terrible. What happened? I went back to the shop and they said it's the upgrade and that there is an issue with it. They also said there is no point leaving the phone with them as they can't fix it that it's upto apple to release a patch for the problem. Can we get a fix for this soon before I damage my ears?

  • Sound Problem After Installing iOS 8.1

Hello, after updating my iPad to iOS8.1 it started making weird noises, kind of the same ones you get while blocking it or getting a notification but with a little of a "robotic" twist. Restoring it seemed to had fix it until I tried to get the 8.1 again. I was just wondering if someone its having the same issue, and if so, whats the solution. Do you think that i'll be treated on the 8.2 version? I had the same problem with my iphone 4 once and couldnt get it sorted out.

I successfully got my iPhone 6 messages sound by following Timothy Holt directions.
    Thanks Tim.

Re: iPhone 6 does not ring or make any sound notifications after installing iOS 8.1in response to Jane1950
What you have to do, and this appears to be essential after you update the OS, is to reboot your phone.
    1. Hold down the sleep/wake button and home button simultaneously.
    2. Let go when the Apple logo appears and the iPhone is booting up.

  • Can you help? -- Browser Webpage Loading Problems after Repairing File Permissions with Disk Utility

    Hello,
I have been experiencing extremely slow startup times and slow application startup times for the past month on my 7-month old iMac.
I read in many places, including the Apple communities, that "repairing file permissions" using the Mac Disk Utility would help. So I ran it and now all my browsers including Safari and Firefox will not load or take 5 to 10 minutes to load a webpage - especially websites that have login features (eg. Gmail, Facebook, Hotmail).
As of my last re-start, Firefox will not load webpages and Safari is extremely slow at opening anything.
Has this problem occured for anyone after "repairing file permissions"?
    And can anyone assist?
    Thank you,
    Shane

    The Solution?
REINSTALL OSX using the Install DVD.
I called APPLE Support and we went through a troubleshooting process to rule out Network Issues, Software Issues, File Issues and Hardware Issues. This process was very thorough.
In the end, we used the Operating System Installation DVD to reinstall the system, which took about 60 minutes including downloading the updates. Reinstallation did not affect any files or lose any applications. Everything was as I left it -- nothing was missing. Easy.
Now everything is back to normal.

  • Sound problems after upgrade to OS4

    Good morning,
Anyone else who has sound problems while phoning after the upgrade to OS4? I have a 3Gs. Sound while phoning has been reduced to absolute minimum.

Same here as well - I have an iPhone 3GS and noticed this morning, when connected to my in-car bluetooth phone system, if I am running a iOS4 application like TomTom which is multi-tasking in the background, the sound quality is crackly, however if I kill the TomTom apps from the task manager, after a few seconds, sound quality is fine.
Starting up TomTom again, immediately reduces the sound qulaity back to crackling.
Not sure if the iOS4 or TomTom to blame.
If I used a the Speaker option, sound is fine. It appears that only bluetooth is affected.

  • Sound problems after upgrading to 7.1 and Pro

I have recently upgraded to Quicktime Pro and installed the 7.1 update, to create Podcasts at work. The only problem is now that non of my quicktimes will play sound. I have checked all volume control sections and mutes etc, its definitely a problem with the software. Also once a movie plays through, or if I try and use the play controls, other than initially pressing play, the player crashes and have to go to task manager to close it properly. The same occurs when you try and close the program.
I was going to uninstall and try again, but I was worried this might cause problems with the Quicktime Pro info.
Anyone else had these problems or have any advice.
    pc amd 2.8   Windows 2000

I'm also having sound problems with Quicktime v7.1 Pro. If I play a .swf file in Quicktime, the video and audio play great. If I play an .avi file, the video plays but there is no sound. If I play a .mov created by Camtasia Studio using either the default compression or the H.264 compression format, the video plays but there is no sound. The graphic display indicates that the audio is present in all cases.
Is there an issue with this new version of Quicktime Pro v7.1?

  • Sound problem after upgrading to 10.6.3

I'm not 100% sure, if this is related to 10.6.3 but it occured after upgrading today (as far as I remember).
I often use the headphone with my MacBook - and sometimes I use the normal speakers... it happened earlier, that my computer "forgot" that it has built-in speakers, but plugging in the headphone jack and removing it helped.
But today, after updating to 10.6.3. my MacBook refused to play sounds of movies etc. permanently. Changing the volume displays a "not available" sign, System Prefs don't now anything about built-in speakers.
Restarting the Mac plays the normal boot sound on these very speakers, but even repairing permissions or resetting the parameter ram didn't solve the issue.
I even recognized a red LED light shining out of the headphone socket for a few minutes...
Anyone expereincing the same problem? Or any idea what else I could try?
    Cheers
    Dirk

    Hurray!! Solved!
The QTip was the solution. I couldn't see any dirt inside, and compressed air didn't help either. Also the first round or QTipping wasn't working - but then, gently turning and even more gently pressing turned out to be it.
A little grey color on the white cotton showed, that something definately was not right here. And now it works.
    Thanks guys.
P.S. Even though I'm lucky to have one of three german Apple Stores nearby, I'm happy to not needing a new logic board..

  • Sound Problems After Installing Lion

I see many are having issues with sound after installing Lion. I have sound and then will lose sound after closing and reopening. I have to restart to restore sound. This is getting old quick. Does anyone know a fix or if one is coming? Thanks!

Not sure how much it helps, but here is my experience:
I have found that after a while, midi-style sounds stop playing. Most obvious to me is the crinkle tune when throwing away trash, or the click when placing something into the trash. When these sounds stop playing, I can still set the volume (and the up/down volume sounds will play) but the midi tracks don't start playing.
A while back I was hunting for a solution to this problem and rebooted and messed around, etc, etc. One person suggested changing the midi format since they knew there was a bug in the midi playback in Lion (a beta comment I think). So I used the Audio MIDI Setup application to change the Built-In Output format to 2ch-32bit float. For a while the sounds were back.
Just now, I noticed that they had disappeared again, so I went back to Audio MIDI Setup and changed it back to 2ch-24bit Integer. All of a sudden, a stream of old sounds started playing - presumably everything that had not been correctly played for a while.
Not sure if it will work again, but next time the sound vanishes, I will try to change the format again and report back what happens. My guess is that just changing the format will cause the queue to reset and play any old sounds. Then the sounds will work for a while until the bug is triggered again. Perhaps the workaround for now is to just keep flipping the Ouput MIDI format?

  • Sound problems after rendering

    Hi,
Being that I have Premiere Pro 7.0, I am not too sure how  much help I will get, but i was hoping that someone here could still  help if all possible. Here is my problem. I thought I start practicing  developing video lessons for 3d software. These lessons would be created  using a screen captureing program, called camStudio. In my first  lesson, my first try doing the entire lesson as one video, I found out  that the video file size exceeded CamStudio's exporter file size  allowance when trying to save out to Microsoft DV 1 AVI file. I then  decided to split the lesson into 2, but final compose it as one video in  Premiere Pro 7.0. Since the lesson was broken up into 2 screen captured  videos, I thought it would make things easier if each screen captured  video was in its own simulation. So, in other words,  I have created 2  simulations in one project, and then I had nested both of them into the  3rd simulation. For example, simulation 1 was called lesson1 part a, and  simulation 2 was named lesson1 part b, and the third simulation was  called lesson1. Once I had everything setup, at first everything was  working fine, meaing I could see the video and hear the sound tracks.  However, after I choose to render the sequence using Microsoft DV11 AVI,  I do not get any sound, and yet I made sure that the exporter exports  both the video and audio. Furthermore, after rendering the project,  going back to Premiere Pro's project, and pressing play, I get the  error.... Disk Write Error: Verify drive connection, available disk  space and disk  access privileges
However, when I go inside  simulation 1 or simulation 2, I still hear their sound tracks. One other  thing I have noticed is that I get the sound back in the project if I  move the orginal simulations into a new simulation. By doing that, I am  then able to recover the project,. but if I choose to render again, the  same process happens all over again.
    Does anyone Have  any ideas?
    My Specs
    Adobe Premiere Pro 7.0
    Windows  XP SP3
    CPU 3.0GHz processor
    RAM 512MB

so are you saying that the problem could be comming from how I did my recording with CamStudio? Not to change the subject, but you see, I am kind of lost. My goal is to provide some free video lessons. I was thinking my final encoded videos will be in DivX or XVid. CamStudio does offer users to compress to thise types of format. Howeveer, due to owning a very cheap microphone, those kinds that sit on your desktop, is causing me to have the biggest problem, since there is a good amount of background hissing noise in my recordings. So, I have been using both CamStudio for the screen capturing and Audacity to do the voice recording. Then in Audacity, I try my best of tuning up the voice and removing the background hissing noise. Once that is finished, I then need some sort of video editing software that allows me to put the video and my voice recodring together as well as splicing areas of the lesson where I stutter or slurr my speach a bit, which can be easily fixed in Adobe Premire Pro. However,  my version of Premiere does not offer XVid or DivX encoding. I was thinking of using VirtualDub, but I really do not want to have 5 programs, just so that I can fix all of my problems, not to mention I have no $$$$ left. So is there a free better way?

  • Sound problem after waking from sleep

When I wake my computer from sleep the external speakers to do not produce sound. This is not related to the 'red light' issue, no red light is shining and in the sound control panel 'internal speakers' is showing.
Interesting is that when I play with the alert sounds in the control panel I can hear them, but when I adjust the volume or try to get sound out of software (iTunes, Quicktime, etc.) I can not hear anything. Also, when the computer is waking from sleep if I quickly toggle the volume control I get one or two 'clicks' before it goes silent. I have repaired the permissions according to other posts but that did not help.
However, if I plug in earphones and take them out again the volume works. . .
    any suggestions?

    Todd Sackett wrote:
Hi everyone, after waking from sleep, the first sound that is played is accompanied by a hissing sound for the first couple seconds. It does not happen after that at all that I have noticed. It comes out of either the speakers or headphones.
Can anyone try this: (Esp. if you have a new MB Penryn update (most recent))
    1) Close lid, put to sleep.
    2) Wait 5-10 mins
    3) Open lid, log in to iChat (with login sound on) or make some other sound play. Listen for a hissing or static sound within the first couple seconds of whatever you just played.
    Thanks for any help!
I don't observe this on my Napa-Revised Macbook

  • Sound Problems after Flash 11.3 Update

This reply is to the post by Ortho_Fan, number 28, which references a Firefox forum and "Firefox Hates New Update." This thread is specifically about problems that Flash 11.3 is causing with Firefox but the problem isn't with Firefox, it is with Flash Player 11.3.
I have no sound with Firefox, Chrome or Safari.  I do have sound with IE9 but some people do not.
See these and probably other threads:

    Problem with sound after update
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4483038

I've branched this discussion into it's own thread, because the issue you're describing is different than the issue from the previous thread, which was related to a specific crash instance.  We'd like to keep the threads focused on particular issues to help both investigate and collate the information coming in, and to aid in discovery for people that are experiencing similar issues.  A single thread with a dozen issues is far less useful in either regard.
For the sound issue you're experiencing, I would recommend that you follow the advice in the threads you've referenced above.
Flash Player 11.3 included new sound enhancments to facilitate support for low-latency audio, to facilitate more repsonsive sound in complex Flash games.  While we try to test a wide array of hardware, and conduct months of beta testing, it's impossible to hit every device, OS, browser and driver combination.
Please ensure that you have the lastet drivers installed for your sound card/chipset.  If the problem persists, please post details of your configuration to that forum thread so that we can track down that hardware/driver combo and investigate the problem.
As a workaround, you may wish to roll back to Flash Player 10.3, until a new version is available.  Flash Player 10.3 contains up-to-date security patches (we maintain one major version back for Enterprise), and will revert the sound change that is causing problems for you.
