Sound problems w/iMovie HD

OK... I've got a MacMini, Sony Digital 8 camera, iMovie HD 6.0.3. When playing my video through the computer (using the on-screen controls), I get no sound. If I uncheck "Filter audio from camera" in the import preferences, I get a little bit of sound, mixed with a pulsing, ringing type noise. If I import a clip, there is no sound at all or the sound is garbled, once again depending on whether I have "filter audio" checked.
Question #1--Is "Filter audio from camera" supposed to turn off the sound completely?
Question #2--Am I supposed to hear sound through the computer while importing/playing from the camera?
Question #3--Why is the sound garbled & how do I fix it???

Ok, a couple other problems I noticed...
When importing with the "scene detection" turned on, it starts a new clip every .16 seconds! I also had a clip that played too fast... like it was sped up.
I'm wondering, is this a frame rate speed problem? If so, how do I fix it? Also, is "filter audio" supposed to turn off the sound completely?

  • Sound Problem in iMovie

I have a sound clip from the iMovie Pkg/Contents/Resources called SpyFC2.  It is one of the tracks used as a background sound track for a trailer.  I started with a Trailer and then converted it to a Project.  I deleted the background audio track, took the SpyFC2 track from the iMovie Pkg/Contents/Resources into iTunes, and then added it to my iMovie Project as a sound clip. Initially it worked well.  I was also able to split the track and then copy a portion of it to extend the audio to match an extended video.
Recently, this track has stopped playing.  One other sound track in the project plays well. This SpyFC2 track is running as if there was a mute on it.  If I select this clip and then select the clip trimmer, I can scrup along the clip trimmer and the audio plays fine.
I have also tried to delete this track, delete the track from iTunes, redrag from the iMovie/PkG/Contents/Resource folder to iTunes, shutdown both itunes and iMovie, reopen both and drag the new soundtrack into the movie.  Still no sound.
If I go to the clip trimmer and scrub thorugh the audio, it seems to work fine. If I move my cursor and scrub through the track right at the video, I get no sound.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi there,
The problem I have is that the music (imported sound clips from iTunes) wonders off" where I placed it, but only in the final DVD version. If this were noticeable in iMovie 06, then I'd move the music to where I want it in the first place. Since I don't have a problem with the sound the camcorder recorded with the clips, it seems to me that this can either be due to the clips being much shorter than the music, so that a time lapse between sound and vision is not noticeable. Or that the music shifts away from its intended place (why?).
So to make sure I can report back (and I will...), I'll try both - after Christmas. I can't trial it at the moment, due to harddisk space: I am using a HiDef camera, and the 3 hours of original tape I made last time (to come up with the 37 minutes final version) clogged 150Gbytes of my Harddrive. So I make the movies, save them as disk images for posterity, and then delete the iMovie 06 project. And reloading the clips from the camera tape is cumbersome as well, as the Firewire 400 port has bandwidth issues (or is it the iMac?), so that importing an hour of tape is easily 3 hours "realtime".
So, after Christmas, I'm happy to report...
In the meantime, one of the enduring advantages of Apple machines is the helpful, supportive and competent advice from other users - I don't see this as a competition, all sense-making contribution is so very much welcome. Thanks!

  • IMovie sound problem - a solution discovery

After downloading a video in iMovie and completing all the processes steps that I wanted to include, I tried to burn this project in iDVD. A problem arose with the sound when I played the iDVD preview. The sound was grabbled and distorted. I contacted AppleCare and got several possible solutions, but none of these solve my sound problem. I even tried to send it back to my camcorder and use my older G4 computer to make a DVD. However, the program could not be transferred to my camcorder either.
Now a strange discovery was found. On the sound line in iMovie (where I had recorded my voice program) was a small yellow dot. Yes, very small yellow dot. I wondered why this was there and clicked on it. The dot move up to the top bar where my video clips were stored. I thought maybe this had changed things, so I rendered the program to iDVD again and previewed it. The sound problem was gone. I successfully burn the program to DVD and found it was okay to view. I have shared this discovery with AppleCare and was asked to share this information in this discussion forum. I hope that others may benefit from solving a similar problem. I still don't know how the tiny yellow dot got on my sound line. If somebody knows, it could be interesting and helpful to avoid this problematic yellow dot. Good luck - Seapark36

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions!
Thanks for mentioning this business of the "..very small yellow dot".
This sounds like a 'Bookmark'. Bookmarks can be placed on the Timeline, where your video plays, along the bottom of the computer's iMovie display, by purposely - or accidentally! - pressing the Apple key and 'B'. Bookmarks let you jump instantly back and forth through your movie (..to the next Bookmark..) by jumping forwards to the next one with Apple and ']', or backwards to the previous one with Apple (..also known as the 'Command' key..) and left-square-bracket '['.
They have, though, been known to interfere with proper playback when exporting (..'Sharing'..) to tape or to iDVD, so Karl's advice has been to delete all bookmarks when the editing's finished and just before 'Sharing'. All bookmarks can be instantly deleted by going to Markers on the top line menu and clicking Delete all Bookmarks.... (An individual bookmark can be deleted, once you've jumped to it, by pressing AltAppleB.)
The little diamond-shaped dots look almost identical to Chapter Marker diamond dots, which you can create by clicking the 'iDVD' tab at the lower-right beneath the right-hand 'pane' of the iMovie window and then clicking 'Add Chapter'. That creates a chapter marker to separate a particular section of your movie when it plays back from a DVD you've burned.
The Bookmarks and Chapter Markers seem (..to me!..) to have a very slightly different colour - maybe one's green and one's yellow: I don't know; I'm red-green colour blind, so I can't tell yellow from green, or green from red!
So perhaps you accidentally created a bookmark by unintentionally tapping the Apple key and then the letter 'B'. Removing it, and all other bookmarks, is generally acknowledged to smooth the process of exporting (..'Sharing'..) a movie project.
Thanks for posting your observation, and reminding us about how important it is to delete bookmarks before exporting!

  • Sound problem with QuickTime .dv files exported from iMovie ~ help please

    Hi
I have been working for ages on an important project which is intended to wind-up as a numbered edition DVD, limited to 50 copies.
When I worked in iMovie HD 5 this NEW PROBLEM didn't arise: I did what I thought was the right thing and bought iLife '06, then upgraded from the Apple site, so now I am using iMovie HD 6.0.1, iDVD 6.0.1 and QuickTime Player 7.0.4.
I've designed my own menus and the procedure as most anyone will know [thanks iCreate magazine!] is...you have to 'export' (or now 'share') the iMovie to QuickTime (or with QuickTime) which produces a .dv file which you then drag-and-drop into iDVD.
I've got 4 of these .dv files for the start-up and some menus.
THE PROBLEM IS whereas the sound (it's actually music) has been faded out (in synch with the image) ~ in iMovie everything seems fine ~ but THE QUICKTIME .dv FILES HAVE AN ANNOYING LITTLE "FLARE-UP" OF MUSIC AT THE END OF THEM.
Imported into iDVD, in preview: sure enough! ~ you hear the annoying, untidy-sounding snips at the end.
It's ruining my project ~ please help, someone!

I am having the exact problem, it's a real show stopper.
I have tested hardware, software, media as below.
    Tested on
    1 Intel 17inch iMac
    2 G4 AGP 450 + 1.2Ghz Model
Each have a fresh install of iLife 06 on
Each have been tested with different project files.
    Differnet music files
The issue seems to be with apples iLife software to me.
I am on the phone to apple right now, they only surgest I create a new user as it generates new prefs, but the above test has already rulled out preference files!
Also rebuilding and reinstalling, but again the above test has rulled that out as the 3 machines were freshly built.
I have already upgraded my graphics card in my machine at home to sort out preview problems with iMovie, hopefully it's not going to be an expensive audio card aswell.
If any 1 can throw any light on this please do as apple support can't.
    Regards

  • IMovie 6 transition sound problem - transposed soundtracks? Any solution?

    Hello,
I can see that this problem has been discussed many times, and I am getting by using some of the suggested "work-arounds", but I was just wondering if there have been any actual solutions to this problem?  I never had this problem before, and I don't exactly know when it started, but it is VERY ANNOYING!  I have iMovie6 and a 2.4 GHz iMac with an Intel Core 2 Duo.  I am still using Leapard, OS version 10.5.8 simply because it seems to work fine, and I haven't needed any of the newer features.  However, if this transition issue would be corrected with an upgrade, I would gladly upgrade!  Has anyone found a solution for this transition sound problem?
    Thanks,
    Lincoln

    Lincoln
Like you I find this very annoying .
For me "extracting audio" sometimes results in the audio becomming out of sync with the video, also doing the "update" mentioned above does not fix it for me; I must be doing something wrong?
Having opened iMovie 6 to try "update " fix and failed I started to try a few things.I think I have found a solution that works.
The following sounds complicated, but is not; reading twice is recommended
Most of us apply a string of transitions from left to right i.e. between clip 1 and 2 then between 2 and 3 then 3 and 4 and so on. The audio glitch will occur in say transition 2/3 because there is a transition immediately before it in 1/2 and likewise a glitch in 3/4 because of the transition immediately before in 2/3 .
I find you do not get a transition audio glitch between 2 clips if there is no transition immediately before.
So the simple solution is having sorted all your clips and edited, apply the transitions in reverse direction i.e. from the end of the movie working towards the beginning; transition between clip 39/40 then 38/39, 37/38 and so on down to 2/1.
If you do not want to start at clip 40 for some reason you can say do (assuming you want all clips to have transitions) clips 5 down to 1, then say 15 down to 10, then say 10 down to 5 etc etc.  But you will notice that when you do clip 5/6 in this scenario you already have a transition for 4/5 so you will get an audio glitch for 5/6.
The solution here before doing transition 5/6 is to split video at playhead  somewhere in clip 5 so that there is a break in the transitions but no interuption in the video.
If you are able to apply transitions in one session then working backwards from the end  is the easiest solution and takes no longer than any other method.
If you have to do it in segments still work backwards but spit clip at playhead as above when approaching an already applied transition in order to create a "transition  break".
Alternatively a quick and dirty way might be to split every clip in 2  before applying transitions and apply the transitions anywhere except at the splits. This way you should not have to worry what order or direction you apply them in.
If you try this let me know how you get on.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and iLife '11 causes sound problems in iTunes, iMovie, and Mail

After updating my OS to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and installing iLife '11, the sound in iTunes, iMovie, and Mail does not work.  The sound in other programs like Skype does work, though. Any ideas?

You should run software update. The current version os SL is 10.6.8, several bugs were squashed and improvements made.

  • IMovie sound problem HELP!

I'm creating a music video. I've brought the volume of the video to 0% while bringing the volume of "other tracks," namely, the music, to 100% (labeled "ducking"). When I play the movie, however, the entire thing is silent. How do I fix this?

  • Re ilife 11: I bought it so I could manipulate the sound WITHIN an imovie clip. The sound track in imovie 09 fluctuates wildly following export of the movie. It seems that ilife 11 in fact does not have improved controls. Any suggestions?

Can I transfer my files to the apple movie "pro" system instead? I forget what its proper name is. With that programme like the old imovie of '05 approximately, you can grab the sound track within a clip and manipulate its volume up or down.
I need to do that to compensate for the coder problems in imovie 09 and 11 soundtracks.

    ecivres wrote:
....you can grab the sound track within a clip and manipulate its volume up or down...
This can be done quite easily in iMovie '11.
Firstly, click on the waveform icon at the bottom right of iMovie's window (also at the lower right of the Project window) - shown here:
You will see the volume level line within the waveform. For the section you wish to lower the volume, click and drag across the waveform so that it is highlighted with a yellow border. Now you can drag the volume line up and down. See the following example, showing the different volume levels:
TIP: Set the thumbnail slider (next to the waveform icon) to half a second - this will show more detail in the waveform, with each thumbnail representing half a second of video.

  • Problem with iMovie iPod Touch 4G

    Hey
I just bought my new iPod touch 4G 32 GB and I'm happy. There's just one problem with iMovie:
If i change the background music (use a song from my library or another theme song) and export the video, there is just music on the left speaker (on iPod and on pc). So the right one doesn't do anything. But if I play my video in the iMovie app (without exporting it) there is no problem with the sound - left and right speaker are working.
I don't know what to do now. I resetted my iPod, Reinstalled iOS 4.1 and iMovie itself an the problem is still there...
    Please help
    Lowista

I'm having the same problem with the audio stuck in the left speaker after exporting from iMovie. Also, how come the video stabilization is so poor? It's impossible to walk and shoot video at the same time with the iPod Touch. I get better results with video stabilization on my old 1995 JVC camcorder! Come on, Apple. I expected better than this.

  • Flip Video camera & problems with iMovie 08

If you are having problems with iMovie and Flip Video, here is the Flip Video email response on 27 May 2008:
    Hello,
    Thank you for your response.
We are not authorized to support third party applications, which is why we do not provide specific instructions regarding iMovie or any other third party application. We only support the Flip and the Flip program, while offering suggestions regarding other programs.
The Apple website also offers Perian as a workaround regarding audio on the Tiger operating system with the latest QuickTime. The latest QuickTime upgrade didn’t allow for audio playback of AVI files, which is why Perian is now offered as a work around by us and by Apple.
It seems as though you are able to playback your videos, as well as use them in outside applications. If this is not the case, and you are having issues using your Flip video or your Flip video program, feel free to contact us further.
    Thank you,

This is my email to Flip Video on 26 May 2008:
My MAC Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie, and then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOV files but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and longer time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVI files had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than the MOV movie. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. Flip says Apple is aware of the problem.
My MAC PowerPc G4 has performed well in the past two months when working with the Flip Video camera. So, at Flip Video’s suggestion I upgraded the operating system to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. Flip Video says their camera works with OS 10.5. Once OS 10.5 was uploaded I soon discovered that iMovie 08 would not operate on my PowerPc G4, 1.86 MHz. The speed requirement for iMovie 08 is 1.9 GHz.
At this point of “spinning my wheels for nearly a month” with this Flip Video camera, I decided to purchase a new iMac. On May 2, 2008, I walked out of the Apple Store in Walnut Creek with the new iMac 20-inch: 2.66GHz. Now the Flip video camera should work and all my video problems solved. However, this was not to be.
When I attempted to Import Flip Video AVI and MOV files into iMovie 08 the files were “grayed out” and would not Import. None of my previous Flip Video files would Import. I tried making new Flip Video movies, they also would not Import into iMovie 08.
At another Apple Store, the tech suggested I download the previous version of iMovie HD. I did this and with hours of working through the different Export options I was able to create movies to post again on youTube. However, the picture quality of the newer iMovies has never approached the quality of my last post before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. Remember my problems started with QT 7.4.5. Well, my new iMac came with QT 7.4.1, I have not Uploaded QT 7.4.5 and won’t until Flip Video fixes this problem.
Examples of my Flip Video movies can be viewed on youTube at: sffoggydays. The last video with excellent picture quality was posted 6 Apr 2008 titled “A Day at the San Francisco Zoo, Chapter Nine, L-Taravel Ride to BART.” This video was made in iMovie and Exported before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. All the youTube Flip Videos made after 6 Apr 2008 have poor picture quality.
It is time for Flip Video camera to stop “passing the buck” to Apple. When manufactures of operating system such as Apple and Microsoft create newer and upgraded systems, it is the responsibility of the manufactures of applications to redo their programs for operating on the new systems. Here is where Flip Video is not accepting this responsibility to Mac users of their camera. The Flip Video application/codex/drivers need to be updated in order to fix the following problems:
    - No sound on AVI files in QT 7.4.5
    - No Import of AVI and MOV files in iMovie 08
    - Poor picture quality for youTube in Export of iMovie HD
I like my Flip Video camera, want to continue making movies for youTube, and recommending the camera to others. The Flip Video camera people need to fix these problems for Mac users.

    Hi!
    I agree 100%!
I also purchased the Flip Video - was thrilled to see that they worked with Apple computers. I made several movies with it when I had my PowerBook G4. I went on a great vacation & took several once in a lifetime videos. Got home & couldn't wait to put them in my iMoive -06, burn them on my iDVD and sent them to several family members & friends. Before I got the chance, I had my system updater tell me that there was a new version to QT. GREAT, I thought, just in time for my vacation videos. Like you, after the QuickTime upgrade, I got video, but no sound. I was SICK about it! I also wrote to the Flip people & got a response somewhat like yours. I left the videos on my Flip which left no room for any others, but I didn't want to take the chance of losing them. After reading from Flip that it would work with OS 10.5 system, I talked myself into getting a new MacBook Pro. Came with all the upgrades iLife -08 and the OS 10.5.2 OK...finally, after months of stressing over losing the vacation videos, I had all I needed to save them! Of course the $2,000.00 price tag hurt a bit, but I deserve a new computer.
Well...I STILL can't get my priceless vacation videos edited and burned! I tried downloading 2 different programs that were supposed to help convert my Flip movies to something that would work, but they haven't. I could get it to work on my desktop with QT, but what good is that?? I want to make DVD's to send to others & save for my grandkids (if I ever am lucky enough to get some!)
I'm TOTALLY disgusted & feel I've wasted my money on the Flip Camera (that at one time I loved & was seriously considering giving them as gifts) the $2,000.00 on a new computer (that even though I do deserve, didn't REALLY need one yet!) AND I still have vacation videos that I can't share!
So... I agree! Flip should honor their word that is printed on the box & MAKE it work with all Apple computers. Surely they can find a fix!
TOTALLY disgusted with the whole FLIP/APPLE mess!
Oh, Flip also said they 'heard' that QuickTime Pro would work with iMovie -08 - although they haven't actually tested it themselves. NO THANKS!!! I've got WAY too much money invested in this stupid Flip camera!

  • Missing tunes in iLife Sound Effects in iMovie HD6

I have been working with iMovie HD version 6.0.4 installed in the iLife 08 package in Leopard. When
accessing the Media Pane and clicking on the Audio Pane and then on iLife Sound Effects, I find that the tunes list is completely blank. There are also no tunes listed in the Garage Band section. However the Standard Sound Effects, the Skywalker Sound Effects and the iTunes list, are completely intact with all songs or tunes in place as expected. I did not have this problem with iMovie version 6.0.3 installed on my iMac G4 computer using Tiger OSX 10.4.11 and I have notified Apple of this problem via the iMovie Help Feedback Form however have had no response from them as they can't respond to individual comments. As a footnote, the missing tunes are in fact on the hard drive. They can be found by going to HD>LIBRARY>AUDIO>APPLE LOOPS>APPLE>iLife Sound Effects (or Garage Band) and the full list of tunes will appear. The question is - how do I transfer all these tunes to the appropriate Media Panes in iMovie and also to the Media Pane in the latest version of Roxio's Toast Titanium version 8 software? I hope that there is someone out there who might help to resolve this problem or who may be able to get Apple to provide an iMovie update which might correct this situation.

Ok, so this is what I did.
I naviagted to the directory you gave me: Hard Drive>Library>Audio>Apple Loops>Apple
I created a new folder name iLife Sound Effects in that directory.
Then I went to imovie, went to the music tab and dragged all of the .caf files straight from iMovie into the folder I created.
Then I opened up FCPX and the files showed up in the audio tab.
Then I deleted iMove because I didnt need it anymore.

  • When Should I Correct The Sound Problems?

I have a set of interview clips in an iMovie '08 project. Originally the video was recorded with two mikes, with one mike on each channel ( L and R). Unfortunately, on some of them, the mike level for one of my interviewees is much lower than for the other, which I need to correct. I also want to put the sound from both mikes onto both the L and R channels, instead of one on each channel.
I have done all my splitting and transitions and titles all that stuff, and am ready to export the clips into a final movie. However, I need to sort out the sound problems.
So - my question is this: is it better to fix the sound in iMovie '08 first, before exporting - and if so - what the best way to do this? Or should I export the movie, and if so, into what format, and how would I then edit the sound? I do own Final Cut Express but have never used it.
Or... is there a better way than these [e.g. exporting into some other program BEFORE compiling into a final movie, and then bringing back into iMovie '08]?
    Thanks!

Kanan, the difference you already know, blade .vs rack mount. There are some CPU differences, but not much. Both can be managed by UCSM in version 1.4.x
So it really is ones preference on what you are using it for and how scalable you want things to be for future expansion.
Blades: easy, as you can buy a chassis and have 2 blades in that one chassis and add blades as needed. If using boot from San, can get a server back up in minutes
Rack mount: can take rack space more quickly, takes time to duplicate in case of a failed server
Very small differences, but hope this helps to start the wheels turning.
    Good Luck!

please tell me what is problem in My Laptop. i have window 7 ultimate operating system.
    Please help me sir

What sound problem - no sound on anything, no sound on some apps ?
Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
And for future info typing in all capitals is considered to be SHOUTING

  • Desperately need some help!! iTunes/Quicktime/iChat/Sound problems....

So, yesterday, I was online, on google video, and when I pressed play on the video, there was no sound, but the video worked...the same was true on every video site i checked. My computer volume was at max, and I even tested the speakers to make sure they were on, and they indeed were.
I thought that was odd...but then the problems really started.....
After that, I clicked on my iChat icon. It bounced once, and did not open. The same thing happened when I clicked on iTunes. 1 bounce, and then nothing. I checked to make sure all of my iTunes mp3 files were on my computer....they indeed are all still here, bit nothing I can do opens iTunes. I've run disc utilities, and disc repair...according to that, everything is peachy-keen on my computer.....but iChat and iTunes STILL will not open, and there is still no sound on anything.
Now, i'm leaning towards the archive and install option....or even just backing up what I want to save, wiping the drive, and starting from scratch.....but i'd really like to not have that happen.
(and, as a side question, if all I want to save are images, several documents, and many mp3 files, would everything be okay if I just backed them up on an external drive, and then loaded them back on to my computer after reinstalling OS X?)
Sorry about the length of this, but I am at my wit's end, and I have no idea what to do.

by third-party, do you mean things I installed that are not manufactured by mac? If that is the case, I have microsoft office, Smart Music, Flip4mac, and Senuti.
I got rid of Flip4Mac to see if that affected my sound problems, but it did not. So, as of now, my problem remains the same...
