Sound Quality 3rd Generation iPod

Hello everyone;
I have a 3G iPod that is still going strong. I have a quick question though. I've noticed recently ( I've just upgraded to Skull Candy Smokin' Buds ) that when listening to some tracks the levels seem to be maxing out and distorting. I don't know the technical terms but thats the closest that I can come to explaining it. It does not seem to matter if the music has been ripped or bought from iTunes.
Could the age of the iPod have anything to do with it? I wouldn't think so as its all digital, but could that be the problem?
Thanks for your time in advance,
Mick

When a restore to factory defaults/mew iPod fails to solve a problem then you very likely have a hardware problem.  An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 3rd generation ipod touch that will no longer sync but charges

I have a 3rd generation ipod touch.  It was syncing to my itunes just fine and then one day it stopped syncing.  It shows that its charging but never syncs anything.  When i click to do a manual sync, it goes through the process but does not transfer any music.  Any suggestions.  I am running windows 7 64bit if that makes any difference with the newest version of itunes.

On your computer go to the control panel (hover in the lower right corner) then programs, add/remove programs
Uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Service, Apple Application Support then go to apple.com and redownload and reinstall iTunes and try again.
You won't lose any content, you're not deleting that, just the programs that access them.
What is thought to happen is that sometimes a new version of itunes doesn't update the drivers in those other two programs. The only way to update the drivers is to force it by uninstalling the programs which allows itunes to write the correct ones.
My iPad and iPod did exactly the same thing and this is how I fixed it.

  • I have a 3rd generation ipod nano. I upgraded to lion. I tried to buy an audio book and download it to my nano like I have done at least 50 times before. Now the dialog box states that I need an ipod touch for the same function. MacBook Pro 2008 w/ m.trac

I have a 3rd generation ipod nano. I recently upgraded to Lion which is causing lots of issues. Aside from that, I went to the Itunes store to purchase books like I have done at least 100 times before with no problems. Now I can by the book and get it to my computer, however when I tried to download the book to my 3rd generation ipod the dialog box informed me that to download any new audiobook purchases I would need an ipod touch. My ipod nano 3rd generation serves my purposes just fine. Why should I be forced to buy something I do not want just to continue something I have always done seamlessly? I know this is more of a rant than a question but I am sure someone else out there has had this happen to them. Maybe you could share your thoughts on how to work around this issue if possible?

I forgot to add the last obvious and crucial step I had taken - plugging a different iPod into my system. It was also not recognized. That was the final proof I needed to determine if the problem was device or system. But now what?
I truly appreciate any help I can get!
    Thanks again...

  • Can someone tell me how to backup my 3rd generation ipod touch?

I have a 64GB 3rd generation ipod touch. I have been  trying for the past two days to back it up to my laptop but it will not work. I have heard that if i update it without backing it up it will delete everything on my ipod and I really dont want to do that unless it is a last resort. Should I just update it and start from scratch or keep trying? Please someone help me .

Follow these instructions. When you restore from backup as the article says, the iPod will also be updated

  • How can i use my 3rd Generation iPod as a portable harddrive for files...

now that i have a brand new 5th Generation 60Gig iPod, i want to use my old 3rd Generation iPod as a portable storage devise for files and whatever else. not for listening to music anymore. what do i have to do to make this so?
i can just go ahead and use the firewire cable that came with it right? and will i actually be able to upload files to it, and then download them again? like word documents and photo files or spreadsheet or whatever?
will it be cross platform then? meaning will i be able to take it to my friends pc (i use a mac) and download my resume or spreadsheet or whatever else to his machine (of course i would have to use the usb cable then).
know what i mean? i want to use this think like an external harddrive.
    please advise.
iBook and Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.3)   and OSX 10.4 on the MBP

i think ipods are generally set to enable disc mode, so you can use it as a storage device, by default (if yours isnt, plug your ipod in, and go into options to select enable disc mode). just connect the ipod with whatever cord it came with to your computer, then look into the m.. is it called "my harddrive" or "harddrive"? and you should see the ipod connected there on the left side of the window with "network" and "music" etc. if you click on the ipod icon, you can drag and drop files into your ipod just as you would any other folder and use it as a harddrive.
the tricky thing is using it for both pc and mac. i think if its formatted for a pc, you can use it on both macs and pcs. but if you have it formatted for a mac, then only macs can read it.
so if you want to use it on your friends pc as well, format your ipod on a pc first so you can use it on both platforms.

  • I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list.

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.

  • TS1398 my 3rd generation ipod touch recently lost wifi capabilities. I reset the network settings... this did not help.  I did a complete reset, I now no longer have the Safari icon on my itouch.  Has Apple removed wifi on older models to force new purcha

I recently lost wifi capabilities on my 3rd generation ipod touch.  I reset the network which did nothing so I did a complete reset.  This actually removed the Safari icon off my itouch and still wifi is completely grayed-out.  Has Apple removed the wifi capabilities to force the purchase of new items?
I find it completely disturbing that only recently has this become an issue for 3rd generation itouch users.
Can someone please help as I am exceptionally frustrated

  • 3rd generation iPod touch syncing issues

The last time I tried to sync my iTunes account through a wired connection between my Macbook Pro and 3rd generation iPod touch, I had some major issues.
First: It deleted the YouTube, iBooks, Netflix, Dropbox, Facebook, and Kindle apps from my iPod and will not let me reinstall them because they are "not compatible with this iPod." This is really annoying.  It means I can never sync my computer with my iPod again.  The only way I can get those apps on my iPod is if I go to the store in the iPod and download each one individually.
Second: Some songs that I have recently acquired will not sync with my iPod because they are not the right format or something.  I never had issues with this before.  This song is in the same format as some songs I aready have on the iPod.
Solutions I have tried:  I tried reinstalling iTunes and it didn't help.  I tried reseting my iPod to factory settings and starting with a "new iPod," twice.  This did not help either.
My Question: Is this an issue because my iPod is out of date and means that I am just SOL or can it be fixed?

The shuffle and iPod touch use different drivers.

  • 3rd Generation iPod Touch battery won't hold a charge.

My 3rd Generation iPod touch has been very reliable for the past few years, but recently I've been noticing a decrease in its battery life. The battery will now, on a full charge, last about 4 hours on continuous usage. Is this normal? I recall it lasting longer before.
    Thanks!

Very likely that the barger is wearing out. That happens with time/charge/discharge cycles. 4 hours is standar for an old iPod like yurs.

  • 3rd generation iPod Touch not recognized by Mac & iTunes!

My 3rd generation ipod touch is not recognized on iTunes but is recognized when I plug it into a different computer. I've tried reinstalling iTunes numerous times and have referred to other online tutorials. With no success, my iPod will still not show up on my Macbook, and I've never experienced a problem like this before with either device. My mac and itunes still recognize my iPhone so I don't know why they would recognize one device but no the other. Solutions?
Any feedback will help greatly. Thanks.

It should work fine.  I have a 1st gen shuffle, and it still works...
If you are updating to iTunes 11.x for the first time, iTunes may hide the sidebar initially, which is where the shuffle appears.
If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  In the sidebar, the shuffle should appear under DEVICES.

  • I have 3rd Generation IPod Touch, it does not boot up.  We have tried to restore, but we are stilling receiving errors.  Any ideas?

I have a 3rd generation IPod Touch that no longer boot up.  I've downloaded the recovery, but it does not work.  It just lights up briefly and then we receive a message that the IPod drivers are not readable.  Any ideas what we can do to resolve?

  • HT4972 I have the 3rd generation ipod touch and it is saying that version 4.2.1 is the current version and there is no mention of ios5

Apple says ios 5 works with the 3rd generation ipod but the highest os i have is 4.2.1?!?!?! help!

If 4.2.1 is the latest version, then you have a 2nd gen iPod, not 3rd.

  • Recently downloaded new ITunes.  Can't get my 3rd generation iPod shuffle to load songs in order.  Help????

Recently downloaded new iTunes.  Now I can't get my 3rd generation iPod shuffle to load songs in order.  Never had trouble with the old iTunes format.

I love the new version of Grid view but some of the other changes feel like they still need some fine tuning. And I miss cover flow even if I didn't use it that often...
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
Ctrl-B to turn on the menu bar.
Ctrl-S to turn on the sidebar (your device should be listed here as before).
Ctrl-/ to turn on the status bar.
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour.
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (but perhaps it does more)
If you want to roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and suppporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

  • 3rd Generation IPOD Nano not recognized

I have two 3rd generation IPOD nanos that are not being recognized by 4 different windows XP systems. One of them is a 4G unit that my daughter has been using for at least half a year. It is not being recognized when plugged into the USB. The other one is a brand new unit that is also not being recognized. I have installed and uninstalled the iTunes software and have the latest. I have reset the IPODS. I have double checked the USB drivers and such. Rebooted. The whole bit. The 5 R's +.
On my system at work, they are not recognized either. However, I plugged in somebody else's 2nd generation IPOD nano and it was immediately recognized and happy. So this is clearly some kind of 3rd gen IPOD nano issue and likely some kind of software issue that has recently happened.

Mate i have had this problem for ages managed to sort it with itunes 7.4 but i have the problem again.
It is becoming very frustrating to say the least, and no matter what you say on these forums or the amount of times i have emailed apple i dont get any answer.
I basically have over 100 punds worth of equipment on myy desk which is a waste.
And no one is helping from apple.
