Sound quality for recording concerts

I love music and visit a lot of concerts. When I bought my E63 I noticed that while on my previous phone the sound got all distorted when I tried to record a loud live performance, it sounded pretty good on the E63, even if the concert got loud. Since that discovery I usually record one of two songs of a show I visit as a souvenir. It's become quite a big thing for me.
Now the E63 has a pretty mediocre camera, so I'm thinking about upgrading to a model with a better one. Of course it is essential that this new phone can record loud sound (110 dB and over) as good or even better than my current E63. I know that this is not a given from people with iPhones or phones from HTC: all they get is when they try to record loud sound is distortion.
Now my question is this: are newer Nokia models still as good at recording loud (rock and metal show) sound and is there some technical spec that I can check to make sure this is the case?

You might first want to look into the following for your current phone:

You can DL it as a trial to make sure it works. Set the Auto record gain to off and set the Record gain to low.

• Help me on choosing the best sound quality for my music on my itunes!!!

I heard that AIFF Encoder is the best sound quality you can import your music into Itunes. On the settings for AIFF Encoder do you know what Sample Rate, Sample Size, and what Channel I should set it to? Should I just leave them on Auto? How about if I have a HDCD? What are your suggestions?

I agree use Apple Lossless. Bizarrely it is also easier to share Apple Lossless with Windows Media Player than AIFF.
I have my entire iTunes library in Apple Lossless and shared with WMP and also Media Center 2005. I can also use it in full lossless quality with Roku SoundBridge, Apple TV, iPhone, iPod, etc. etc. etc.

Try clicking the link I supplied in my first reply. This should take you to the main forums page. From there you need to find the Audition forums.
Question though. You said you thought this was the Audition forums? Can you tell more about how you came to that conclusion? How did you find this forum and end up posting here?
Note that we aren't upset that you posted in the wrong place. It's just that we would prefer you get the best and quickest help you can and by having to be redirected your help is delayed. • Sound Quality for mp3

I want to import an mp3 file into flash but want to make sure the file size is the smallest I can get it without downgrading the quality of the sound.  Is there anything out there that will do this for me?

Speedr,
Okay, when you go the route of ActionScript, you need to remove the audio from your timeline, and you can delete the imported audio file from your library.  To load your audio at runtime, you can use the following ActionScript.  Put this code into a keyframe, such as frame 1 of the main timeline:
var audio:Sound = new Sound();
At this point, you've declared a variable named audio (just an arbitrary name) that is typed as an instance of the Sound class (that's the :Sound) part.  All that means is that your variable's name is audio and it's type is Sound, as opposed to, say, MovieClip, Boolean, Date, or any other kind of object.  The audio variable is an instance of the Sound class -- that is, it's a Sound object -- and the variable audio is now a reference to all the rights, priviledges, and functionality described in the Sound class entry of the ActionScript 2.0 Language Reference.
Classes generally have three categories:  properties (characteristics), methods (things the object can do), and events (things the object can react to).  At this point you want to do something, so you'll use the Sound.loadSound() method.  You'll invoke this method on the audio instance:
audio.loadSound("mySong.mp3", true);
This method happens to accept two parameters, which are the words that show between the parentheses.  The first parameter, a string, names the MP3 file you're loading.  The second parameter, a boolean, tells Flash whether or not to play the sound as soon as enough bytes have loaded.  Using true means the audio will start playing automatically, usually after a few seconds, even if the MP3 is rather large.  If you use false, or leave that second parameter blank, the audio will not play automatically, but then you'll have to use programming to determine when the file has fully loaded (see the Sound.onLoad event).
Now, I know you want this file to repeat, so to do this, you can use a event (something the object reacts to -- such as encountering the end of the file).  Here's how you can listen for that onSoundComplete event in AS2:
audio.onSoundComplete = completeHandler;
function completeHandler():Void {
      this.start();
Event handling happens a number of different ways in AS2 (it's more consistent in AS3), but the principle is always the same:  you choose an event to listen for, and then associate a function with that event.  In this case, I've written a custom function, arbitrarily named completeHandler(), that handles the onSoundComplete event.
This function simply references itself (this) and invokes the Sound.start() method on that reference.  So ... when the audio finishes playing, the Sound instance -- in this case, a variable named audio -- dispatches the Sound.onCompleteEvent.  Because that event is associated with a function, the function is then triggered.  That function invokes the Sound.start() method on itself, which restarts the audio.

• Audio podcast sound quality bad

Hi, I'm producing a podcast that's all vocal. I compressed the half hour long show to mp3 with the standard vocal podcast (which has a bitrate of 96). The sound quality for the voices is pretty bad. It sounds like we have lisps. The s sounds get muffled out. I tried doing an mp3 compression at 160kbps and it sounds a bit better but I don't think I need to be compressing it with such a high bitrate. Is there anything that I might be missing? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to export it without compression, just to check if it maybe sounds bad by itself? E.g., when you're clipping the levels, you might not hear it in GB, but in the exported audio file.

• The new 338S0987 chip from cirrus logic has inferior sound quality to the old cs42L61 chip.  Can the 338S0987 chip be improved?

The new 338S0987 chip from cirrus logic, used in the new 4s has inferior sound quality to the old cs42L61 chip found in the 4 and 3G.  Can the 338S0987 chip be improved?
The new chip is very compressed and has hissing artifacts.  It sacrifices sound quality for reduced energy consumption.  This is a problem for me because I am building a musical instrument app that is adversly affected by the new cirrus logic chip.  Audio fidelity is suffering.
Is there any chance for a software/driver tweak of this chip, or my I please request an improvement on the next iphone model?

• Improve sound quality

I see several programs that claim to substantially improve the sound quality for iTunes, or for all programs. Some seem very powerful, but also quite expensive, so I am not sure which has the best price/value. Do any of you have recommendations?
Thanks

When playing music on my computer through iTunes or other applications where sound quality is of the essence, I now use +Audio Hijack Pro+ to 'hijack' the sound output of the particular application, and under the 'Effects' tab, add the 31-band EQ found under 'AudioUnit Effect' - 'Apple' - 'AUGraphicEQ'. The setting is left 'flat'.
After comparing this EQ with the standard 10-band EQ in iTunes, the ears of this professional musician have convinced me that the sound is far superior. I have played CDs of a wide variety of genres and switched between the Audio Hijack Pro and iTunes EQs; I've also used my sitting-room Rotel equipment and B&W speakers as an aural reference. There is a difference in sound, with instruments such as drums and cymbals having more detail in the harmonics that can be heard. There was greater richness in the harmonics heard in a saxophone melody and even in the sound of the player's tonguing.
I am amazed it has taken me so many years to 'see the light' and am now much happier with what I hear from my computer.

• Wanting sound quality closer to HD caliber. Using gigaworks. Just bought a vid card with hdmi audio

I just got a GTX 560 TI, and my dilemma arose after installing this card and then trying out the HDMI audio, and being amazed at the sound quality I am NOT getting by simply using my sound card. Here are some of my specs which are relevant. I have the said video card, a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer, a Samsung 40" LCD I use as a monitor, and an Asus P5N motherboard. Also, I am using Creative Gigaworks 7.1 750s speakers. I'm running a mini-hdmi to hdmi cable from my card to TV. Basically I am hearing sound quality from my TV that is absolutely superior to anything that has come out of my speakers and am now wanting to achieve better sound quality for my speakers, but how? Should I get a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty? New speakers is definitely not what I am looking for right now, and besides that, they are a very powerful set of 7.1's that you just can't find anymore. I know there are HDMI sound cards, but I doubt I would be able to plug my speakers into those. Is there better software I can download to go along with my sound card? I've updated PowerDVD on the off-chance that it would help (even though I knew it wouldn't). I'm really not sure how much help getting a fatal1ty sound card would be. Any suggestions on how to get my PC speakers running up to or NEAR to HD quality?

$200 at all? So no new sound card? Or 200 for receiver only? So following setups are possible using a receiver:
- Use SB, Receiver: so you connect from SB analog to Receiver and from their analog to Speakers, use HDMI/DVI for video seperately. IMHO Bad as it uses much analog points and would have bad sound quality. As long as you don't buy a quality SB, real good analog cables, good receiver. And so we speek over 1000$
- Use GPU and Receiver directly via HDMI. Then Analog to Speakers and HDMI/DVI to TV. No real extra SB needed, but be aware that if you got an nvidia card it may be you need to connect the sound via SPDIF - check: . But as SPDIF only provides 1,5Mbit/s (6Mbit/s in rare cases) and formats like Dolby True HD/Digital Plus, DTS HD Master need 18-25 Mbit/s you won't get highest quality possible as software downsamples quality. But i think anyway these formats are not supported by GPU, thats why 3rd solution exists
- As written above use GPU to SB via HDMI, SB to Receiver via HDMI, Receiver to Speakers via Analog. Most expensive as you need new SB and Receiver but thats the way they want high end sound being provided.
Keep in mind that on 2nd and 3rd solution the receiver must have HDMI I/O! Also check HDMI Version! 1.3/1.4? 7.1 is not nessacary (as your speakers can do 5.1 to 7.1 upmix ) but you buy a receiver normally just once and so i would recommend to get that too. If you want a good one LipSync, Deep Color, x.v.Color should be onboard too.
So on the second part - why do you think you have to buy new cables and sub? And did i get you right - you want to directly connect the speakers with receiver? No, you have to connect to a sub. Well, if you want the receiver to do the upmix you need the seperate available 4x Stereo or RCA cables as i don't think an receiver will provide 7.1 via the supplied 4x to 3x 7.1 Audio cable.

• Is My Equipment ok for High Quality Home Recording?

Hi There,
I have a band and we want to start the process of producing a CD on October this year (choose the songs we have written, groove, arrange, etc.) We want to start recording as early as possible in 2007.
We play mostly Worship at a non-denominational church in Germany and we play Rock/Pop.
I've been using very unregularly Cubase SX 3.1 under Windows but i want to buy a new iMac20 starting 2007. So I've been researching the equipment i would like to buy to make a Budget.... maybe if God wants, find some Sponsors as well.
So maybe you could give me your advice and tell me if with that equipment I could achieve a High Quality Home Recording project ??? Just equipment related, i know there are tons of other things to achieve a good Home Recording project. We will give our Recordings to a Studio for Profetional Mixing and Mastering, we will not do it our selves.
I have some money available for all that but i am neither rich, so i'm on a budget. Somethings i already bought.
Hardware/Equipment
1 x iMac 20" - 2 GbRAM - 250 Disk - ATI 256 Mb (should i get better a 500 Disk ?)
1 x MOTU 828 MK2 - Firewire
2 x Genelec 8030 + 1 Subwoofer 7050B
1 x Neuman TLM 103 (only for voices)
1 x MindPrint EnVoice MK2 (already bought it)
Software
ProLogic 7 (or the newest version on market when i buy the iMac - Cubase will find its way in eBay)
Celemony Melodyne Cre 8 (already bought it - only for voices)
FXPansion BFD (already bought it)
OK... hope i am not forgetting anything. That stuff is the most important for your advice. Please drop your toughts
Cheers, cesar.
Following are our Instruments, but we are not thinking of buying new instruments... maybe somethings for our bassist.
Music Instruments
(Not all the instruments are mine :))
1 x Roland TD12 eDrums (will use it with FXpansion BFD)
1 x Korg TR 76 Keayboard (should i use it only as Masterkeyboard and use the instruments in ProLogic better?)
1 x Koch Multitone 50 W + TS 212 H Cab (it has an amazing recording output, but wanted to record the eGitars not only with the recording output but simultaneously with a mic, is that a good idea? Could I use the Neuman TLM103? or should i get a Shure 57 ?)
1 x Marshall TSL601 (which we want to exchange for another Koch Multitone when we have the money)
1 x Warwick Sweet 15 (thoug we are thinking of exchanging it for a Warwick WC CCL ND8 2x10)
Gitars: We have a 500 something Taylor... really good but i don't know the details since i don't play it and one Epiphoe Custom LesPaul (change the Pickups for 2 Gibson BurstBucker Pro and now sounds like its Gibson Custom counterpart) and a Tokai LP..... hmmmm and a very cheap Yamaha Bass, our bassist hasn't had money to buy something better.
Take care and thanks for your advice and thoughts!!!!
Thinking about buying one

Hi and thanks for all your replies!
I guess i have lots of work ahead of me... I will defenitely get an external Hard Drive for my backups.
About the Audio interface.
Motu 828 MK2 - 730 EUR vs RME Fireface 400 - 880 EUR
Motu 896 HD - 1230 EUR vs RME Fireface 800 - 1300 EUR
What would you recommend me ?
Remember I have the Mindprint EnVoice MK2 Compressor/PreAmp. My Instruments/Mics will be connected directly to MindPrint and MindPrint via SPDIF to my Motu/RME interface. I will record one instrument at a time, so I don't need so many inputs. Just the eGitars will be recorded with 2 inputs.
With this configuration, should i still pay some 500 Extra and get the next level either in Motu or RME ? Is the price difference going to give me really a much better sound to justify those extra 500 ?
Apogee Ensemble - 2050 EUR Is the only Apogee product I can find available here in Germany so far and is out of my league.
From Lynx haven't found anything.

• Recomendations for Recording Quality Voice Over in Captivate

We have been working with Captivate to create training
materials for about six months and like it a lot. We are using a
lot of voice overs in our trainings. At the moment I'm using a mid
to low range headset to record the voice over. It is a step up from
your cheap VOIP headset but still isn't a high end model. It cost
about 30 euros. The quality is acceptable but could be improved
upon.
I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations about
headsets/microphone recording equipment to optimize the quality
when recording voice in Captivate. Are there also any
recommendations about what sort of software is optimal? Are some
sound cards better than others etc? I've tried to find this info in
the Captivate documentation but haven't found any recommendations.
If anyone could give me your own experience or point me in
the right direction for any Adobe recommendations I'd appreciate
it.
Many thanks,
Aimee

Don't use Captivate 2 or 3 built in audio recorder, it
introduces the degradations you experience. We use Adobe Audition
(now Soundbooth) to record and then simply import to the library.
You could of course use any external recording program, just don't
use the Captivate internal recorder and you will get pristine sound
everytime.
To rerecord or add more to the recording simply right mouse
click from the library and it will launch Audition. Mono 44.1khz,
700 or better kbps for voice recording will result in an excellent
hiss free, no start or end click sound when you play. You must then
find the recording after you have saved your edit in Audition and
right click to update the new changes. It will update the file in
the library and the slide together.
When saving your recording use a naming convention such as
module 1,chapter 1,slide1 (M1_C1_S1) that way multiple slide 1
recordings will not confuse you in the library when there are
multiple slide 1's from different chapters.

• Can anyone recommend a quality microphone for recording instruments?

Hey,
I'm a Garageband and digital audio newbie. I understand you can connect a microphone to record in, instead of using the built-in mic. Can anyone recommend a couple different good quality mics? I want to record an acoustic guitar. Or maybe a web link that discusses how to do this?
Also, in the Garageband Help it describes as an alternative using an audio interface between the mic and the computer. Can anyone recommend something for this? Again, maybe an online article that discusses this in more detail?
I can't really find any specific information to help with this other than the vague sales and Help material.

My personal fav's for the sound quality and price point are the Apex 415 and Apex 460. Both are condenser mic's so then need phantom power, but the 460 comes with a phantom powered preamp so you should be good to go assuming you have an appropriate interface to your mac. Price on them is ~$160CDN for the 415 and ~$260CDN for the 460. The sound quality on these is stunning - rich, warm, and exceptionally detailed, especially compared to the shure SM57's. I will agree though that the SM57 is a terrific all-purpose mic (the design hasn't changed in 20 years, it's hard to argue the accepted capability of these mic's!), but I've found that it just hasn't been able to do justice to the rich sound of my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. Last night I was practicing with my band and was testing out an Apex 415 in place of the SM57 I usually use to mic my guitar cabinet, and when I played the sound back, I commented to the drummer that it sounded really good. He was looking directly at me, listened, and after a second realized that I wasn't actually playing my guitar and was instead playing back the recording. The expression on his face was priceless..."holy $hit that sounds good, I thought you were actually playing!".
