Sound quality through Firewire device (Presonus Inspire)

I have a Presonus Inspire as a Firewire audio interface which works fine, except for one thing. So far, I have been using the internal headphone jack for monitoring, but I seem to run into the infamous problem of dropouts and cracks that Apple has acknowledged when using different routes for audio input and output. However, when I monitor through the headphone jack of the Inspire, the sound is quite different - I'm missing a lot of the low frequencies, it just doesn't sound right. Any ideas?
(Since the interface is rather new on the market, I might have to turn to the Presonus support instead - but if anyone has an idea, that would be appreciated!)

There are basically two ways to listen to your recording: direct and monitored. Direct is when the device you're using (the Presonus) sends it's capture directly to it's headphone output. The music is sent to the Presonus so you can hear it. "Monitored" is when you listen to what the computer sends to the Presonus device. Turn on the track monitor toggle and as you record, the computer applies any and all effects you've specified, then sends all signals back to the Presonus headphone jack.
It sounds like this is the difference you're hearing.
I use a Tascam US-122 and plug the headphones into it and listen directly to what I'm playing. The USB connection causes latency when there are a lot of track being played.

Temporarily, I suggest that you connect a pair of headphones directly to the AirPort Express. How does that sound?
If things sound good, you know that the Express is functioning correctly and that you likely have have a problem in the connecting cable from the Express to your stereo equipment, as Koloss suggests.

  • Can anything be done about sound quality through the ear speaker?

I tested the 4S in the store prior to purchase and thought call quality was fine.  However, in day-to-day reality it's proving to be a bit difficult.  My previous phone, an old Motorola Razr, produced nice crisp sound, whereas the iPhone tends toward a duller, cottony quality.
Is there any fix?  Am I stuck?

Thanks for your suggestion, but the issue has been constant from new. Suspecting it might be the hardware, I returned the unit for a new one, and there's been no difference.
Now, I'm aware that oftentimes a call can only be so good in part due to the quality of the transmission.  But my previous device, a Motorola Razr, provided a crisp enough sound to offset all but the most unitelligible conversations, whereas I struggle like crazy with the iPhone.

  • Apple TV Sound Quality

Recently I compared the sound quality of a music track in several ways:
    1. Original CD played directly in Bose Lifestyle.
    2. Same track stored as AIFF on MacBook streamed with Apple TV with TosLink Cable.
    3. Same track stored as AIFF on MacBook streamed with Apple TV with Analog Cable.
1st option gives an excellent and dynamic sound. 2nd option is less dynamic and 3rd option is the least quality.
As AIFF is a non compressed format of the original track of course I expect the same high quality with option 2.
Some advise using a D/A Converter. Is this the solution? Or is there another solution to enjoy the original CD sound quality through Apple TV?
    Regards,
    Cemmy

What are 2+3 running into, the Bose system?
I would not expect the AppleTv analogue out to be of decent quality as it's likely to have dirt cheap components.
As far as 2 goes, I assume by streaming you are not using Airtunes, but playing the track on AppleTV directly. I ask as Airtunes will add adjustments applied in itunes and can sound different to AppleTV direct.
Was the track synced to AppleTV and played or streamed - there could well be differences in sound that you would not expect.
Assuming the CD rip was good AppleTv should just output the bitstream and the amp's D to A converter would largely be responsible for the quality. Assuming this is the Bose DAC, you would imagine it might use the same DAC as for the internal CD, which would make you wonder why - it could be down to a better CD transport in the Bose giving a more accurate bitstream, less jitter or better jitter correction than applied to other inputs.
All very well having a different DAC, but if the analogue input on the amp is not up to par it may not help.
Also check your Toslink input does not have some processing applied eg pseudo surround or similar which could adulterate the sound.
You could also try playing the track via the Macbook directly using a mini-toslink adapter.

  • My apps don't hear FireWire sound from Presonus Inspire 1394

    Dear Folks,
OK, the saga continues. Bought a Presonus Inspire 1394 A-D -> Firewire unit for digitizing my vinyl. Got it hooked up to my stereo and my MacBook Pro fine. Directed Audio MIDI setup to make this the default input and output device. Ditto with MacOS's Sound control panel. Set the sample rate to 48kHz, 24 bit. Unit plays just fine, VU meters in the Inspire control panel look good, output through my speakers sounds good.
MacOS Sound control panel says I've got input-- nice signal on the VU meter. But I can't get audio in any app I try. Audacity, CuBase, GarageBand, all silent. OK, I've got insignificant experience with the last two, I'm the first to admit it. But I can follow instructions, and I had Audacity configured to work previously. But when I tell it to use the Inspire for I/O, there's nothing on the monitors, the VU meters, or in a recording. Just dead air.
So, what have I got set wrong?
    pax / Ctein

    Dear Po,
Basic questions are OK. I figured this has to be one of those "is it plugged in?" stumbling blocks.
And you got me to the right plug!
I checked the track info panel, and it's set to Inspire input channels 1 & 2 (front panel mike/instrument inputs), instead of 3 and 4 (back panel phono/line inputs)!
I changed it to channels 3 & 4 and it records just fine.
(Now I gotta figure out how to make those the input channels in my other apps... but at least I know the problem fix.)
    Thanks! And g'night.

  • No sound effects with firewire audio device

I use an external (firewire) sound device for better sound. When I'm in a call, the audio output is routed correctly to that device. But, sound fx, such as when someone sends me an IM or when someone is calling are NOT routed to that device. If I unplug the firewire device, I do hear the sound fx through my macbook speakers. So, if skype is on my side monitor it's very easy for me to miss IMs and calls because I don't hear the sounds. This makes me look very unprofessional to my colleagues. Basically anyone who uses a mac for professional audio/video is going to have an external audio device. Please fix this bug!

I have an Iphone 4S and It won't let me watch videos on my safari, which I do everyday. It says that I am connectef to a tv, yet I have not connected it to a tv during the entire time i've owned this product. I have not connected it to anything bluetooth either. It plays the sound through the device, but it will not play the video at all. the update is IOS 6.1.3

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.
    - Then try on another computer

  • Trying to use FireWire devices with a W540 through a Thunderbolt adapter

We have a camera that we need to use that has FireWire 800 as its sole interface, and because it needs to be mobile we had to use it with a laptop.  After some research we decided that the best course of action was to purchase a ThinkPad W540 and connect the camera to the Thunderbolt port with a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, as this should give us plenty of bandwidth for the camera.
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to connect any FireWire devices to the laptop in this way.  We have tried connecting both the camera and a FireWire hard drive through the adapter, and while the power lights will come on for both devices the computer resolutely refuses to even acknowledge their existance.
I have tried everything that I can think of to get this to work, updating all of the dirvers on the laptop, checking all of the settings in the BIOS, and searching the forums for similar issues, but now I have run out of ideas.  What can I do to get this laptop to play nice with my FireWire devices?

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.
Sorry you're having issues using a Thunderbolt-2-Firewire adapter.
Not much I can offer on that as I've never used one, but an alternative might be to try an Expresscard Firewire adapter. A number of them I've seen offer 2 ports, so that might be useful also.

  • Very poor sound quality on bluetooth headphones through HP Envy 700-074 desktop

I recently purchased a pair of Bose AE2W wireless bluetooth headphones to use with my HP Envy 700-074 desktop computer. After successfully pairing the headphones the sound quality is extremely poor. I know the headphones are not the pronblem since they sound beautiful when paired with my iPhone or iPad.
I have tried updating the driver, but I have the most current version installed according to the computer. Adjustment of the Beats Audio controls or any other sound controls does not help.

  • HV20 - sound won't play through firewire to system speakers during import

help please - When playing back captured HD footage on my HV20 via a firewire connected to my Dual 2.5 G5, the sound plays through the mini speaker in the camera, and not the large system monitor speakers connected to my computer. Once the footage is transfered to the computer, the clips then play back fine and the sound seems ok. But Is there anyway to get the sound to play through the computer system speakers druring import - it's difficult to properly monitor the import as the sound from the mini speaker on the camera is way out of sync with the visual displayed on the computer during the playback/import process - thanks for your help.
    William

    Dear SDillini:
Thanks for your reply. I've been editing video on my Mac for some years now with serveral dfifferent cameras attached via firewire and always up until now, on the HV20, been able to monitor the sound from the video tape in the camera through the computers sound system as I was deciding which clips to import and which to leave alone while playing the video in the camera through the firewire to the computer. I'm able to see the video on the computer in real time, but there is no sound except from the small speaker in the camera and it plays out of sync with the image on my computer monitor, making in and out points of capture less precise.

  • Sound not playing through any device.

Sound will not play through any device I try. I tired re installing all the drivers messing around with the playback device
and sound mixer and tried going through the audio jack in the back the headphone jack in the front hdmi to my tv and usb wireless headset none of them worked. and tried them all on with something other than my pc and the devices themselves work. i honestly
dont know what else to try is it something with windows or maybe my graphics card or something else? please help.

    Hi Kevinwido,
When did this issue occur ?Have you made any modifications to the machine ? Will the built-in sound device work ?Have you tried to update the motherboard from the manufacturer website to have a check ?
You may need to download the sound card driver from the manufacturer for the sound devices to have a check.
If only the outer device won`t work and both of them are USB devices ,it is recommended to reinstall the USB controller driver, too .
If the issue occured recently ,we can perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous point to have a check. Please note we will miss some configurations after the restore point .
    Best regards

  • Why is the sound quality and volume in itunes so different than when I use other media players

This is an issue which has been vexing me for some time. I've researched it all over the web and have not found a worthwhile answer. Some other posts on these forums have asked similar questions without successful answers. But, none the less, I will try...
I have spent a lot of time over the last two years trying to get my itunes library organized as well as getting good digitized versions from my vinyl records as well as CDs. I was pleased with my results and then I added the songs to itunes. I could not believe how inconsistent the sound quality was. Invariably the volume is always lower. [Please do not post a reply such as: Check the volume controls in itunes proper as well as in itunes preferences (i.e., Sound Check, Sound Enhancer) & the Volume Adjustment in the Information pane under Options for particular songs.] I tried all of those means of adjusting volume. They do NOT work.
There is something more insidious at work in itunes which prevent good sound reproduction. I will give an example. I have played Frankie Valle and the Four Season's song "C'Mon Marianne" on the OS X system sound (i.e. clicking the play button to the song file when selected on the desktop or wherever it resides) as well as in Amadeus Pro. The song sounds great. When I play it when it's in the itunes' library the first part of the song is too lound and then when Frankie Valle starts singing his voice is at a significantly reduced volume.
I have edited the foregoing song in Amadeus Pro to a very high volume (i.e., Effects>Amplify), reloaded it into itunes and it still does not inprove the volume of Frankie's voice in the song, even though the rest of the song is somewhat louder. I have played with the Equalizer in itunes to no effect. It just does not work.
Now, I would glading move away from itunes and use another media player. However, I have other Apple devices through which I listen to music. And the only way I know of to listen,e.g., on the iphone is through itunes.
The other related problem with itune, or should I say iCloud, is icloud match. The icloud Match has taken great sounding music and given me back music of an inferior quality, even though it is a Matched AAC format.
I'm am sorry if I am a little peeved about this issue. If anyone has some suggestions or input to a solution, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks a bunch.

    fbuerg,
You are welcome. Glad my good fortune was helpful to you.

  • Problem connecting Firewire device and external HD at the same time

Hi. I'm attempting to record digital audio through a Presonus Firepod A/D interface via a Firewire 400 to 800 cable connected to one of the Firewire 800 ports on a mid-2010 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard.
The problem is that if I have an external HD connected to one of the other Firewire 800 ports on the computer and powered on at the same time, the connection to the Presonus Firewire device is not recognized by the Mac Pro. Not only that, performance of the Mac Pro is affected adversely and System Profiler is unable to list any Firewire devices. If I turn the external HD off, the Presonus device is recognized and listed in System Profiler and the machine runs fine. I'm able to connect two external hard drives via separate Firewire 800 ports on the Mac Pro and both drives mount w/ no problem. It's only when I try to connect one of the external HDs and the Presonus audio device at the same time that the problem occurs.
I used this same arrangement on a PowerMac G5 running Tiger w/ no problems whatsoever. If the 400 to 800 cable is bad, I would think it wouldn't work at all, but it does when only the Presonus Firepod is connected and powered on. Any ideas?

Have done more research and apparently this is not an uncommon problem: overloading the Firewire bus when connecting an audio device along with an additional device like an external hard drive. As I understand it now, audio signal is a bandwidth hog and the solution is to get a Firewire PCIe card which will have its own independent Firewire bus and which I'll use exclusively for my audio device.

  • Firewire device looses connection when external screen is inserted into the thunderbolt port? HELP

    HI
I am a recording studio engineer. Ive got a Firewire AD/DA Converter (Focusrite Saffire Pro 56) running from my Firewire port of my MacBook Pro, which is running OSX Mavericks. I've also got an external Screen I want to use as an extended display. I'm using a HDMI cable from the screen to a HDMI to Thunderbolt Converter which I then plug into my Thurderbolt Port.
As soon as I plug the screen in, the Firewire Port looses connection completely and I cant use or even choose the Saffire Pro 56 as audio driver. Another thing happens where the Thunderbolt port replaces the Saffire Pro 56 Driver with the screen as the audio output source.
Please help, there's nothing I can find to fix this.
    Thanks Maurice

You don't mention which model you have, but this is from the M-Audio Firewire 410 Manual Troubleshooting section:
The FireWire 410 has been designed to give you high performance and professional quality audio. It has been tested under a wide range
of systems and operating conditions. In the real world, however, there is a nearly infinite number of possible operating scenarios, any of
which could affect your system’s performance. Much like owning an automobile, “your mileage may vary.” This section can not begin to
cover all possible issues you may encounter, however we want to give you some suggestions on common problems you may experience.
One thing to avoid is connecting too many devices. The FireWire bus is a dependable, high-speed, high-bandwidth protocol which is ideally
suited for digital audio. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that audio and multimedia streaming places considerable demands on
your processor and the FireWire bus. Although it is theoretically possible to chain many multiple FireWire devices in series, doing so may
    potentially degrade your audio performance.
I guess this degradation could also affect the Firewire HD. Maybe there is a simple fix, but it sounds like the M-Audio people have been down this road before.
