Sound randomly stops working in Windows 8

I have a new HP PC and the sound randomly stops working.  When the sound stops, it stops in all applications:  iTunes, Web Browser, etc.
PC DETAILS:
HP Omni 27 all-in-one desktop
Windows 8 Pro
In Device Manager, under Sound, this is what I have:
- AVerMedia H334 MiniCard Hybrid ATSC/QAM
- Bluetooth Audio Device
- IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
I just set up this new pc this week and I have run all the windows  and drivers updates so everything is up to date.
When I boot up the pc, the sound works fine for a while and then randomly stops working.  For example, if I play music in iTunes 11, the latest version, it may play for 1 minute or it may play for 10 minutes and then it just randomly stops playing sound and the sound will not come back until I reboot and the same thing happens all over again.
I have searched this online and I found quite a few people posting similar sound issues with Windows 8, but I have not found a fix for this problem yet.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do not understand that; if it's not installed, it cannot possibly be enabled.
Make sure ActiveX Filtering is disabled.

  • Sound randomly stops working on Iphone 5c

The sound randomly will stop working. (ringers, audio, etc.) I have had this phone for one day.
Oddly enough, the same thing was going on with my iphone 5 which is a big reason I went and upgraded, now i am just very aggravated!
Anyone know what could be going on??

I have the same problem with my new 5c, seemingly carried over from when I upgraded from my old 3s that had the same problem - all sounds randomly stop working (although vibrate seems to still work) and then randomly start working again.
When you set up your new phone did you 'restore' from your old phone's back-up or set it up completely like a new phone? I did the former so I assume whatever the 'glitch' is, it may be something to do with that.
I called 1-800-MYIPHONE and was advised to do a hard reset - I questioned the point of that when I effectively started from scratch with my new phone only a few weeks ago (well, when I say from scratch I of course mean I 'restored' from my old phone's back-up so that all my stuff would carry over...), plus given the coincidence of having the same problem on my old phone... Next guidance was to restore the phone to factory settings and start over from 'new phone' status, which I did this afternoon... so far so good but we shall see. Here's a link to the guide on how to do it if you want to give it a whirl:

  • Trash sounds randomly stops working in Mountain Lion

I noticed that the trash sounds (putting a file in the trash, emptying the trash) will randomly stop working.  A restart usually fixes this but at some point it will randomly stop working again.
    Any solutions?

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go To Folder
Type or copy / paste:   ~/Library/Preferences
Click Go then move the  com.apple.dock.plist   file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that made a difference...

  • My sound randomly stopped working on my ipad how do i fix it?, my sound randomly stopped working on my ipad how do i fix it?

well my sound randomly one day stopped working how do i fix it so my sound will be ok again?

I would start by checking the mute button on the side of the iPad to make sure that this has not accidentally gotten switched. Then go into settings> general>sounds and make sure that everything is on, etc.
It would be helpful to know if the sound isn't working constantly and for every purpose or only in certain circumstances.

  • External Speakers Randomly Stop Working until I "Test" or Disable/Enable

    I'm using a HP Pavillion DV6 Notebook PC Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1.
External speakers randomly stop working until I "test" or disable/enable them. Headphone/HDMI Audio Works.
    Background
-Recently had to do a clean install of windows.
-Went to the HP Drivers Website and downloaded all of the latest drivers.
-I installed several other programs as well (Flash, Steam, Media Player, Browser)
    -The problem started
    Current Settings
-My deafult device is "Speakers and Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC"
    -Enhancements are disabled
-Bass and Treble are set to 4
-Format is set to 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)
-Allowing applications to take exclusive control of the device or not doesn't make a difference (but it's currently off)
    Troubleshooting
-The audio works by plugging in headphones or using an HDMI device
-The audio comes back if I go to my sound settings and hit "Test", or if I disable and re-enable the device
    Error Messages
-Youtube starts the video for 3 seconds, restarts and sputters a bit, and then says that there was an error
-My media player (MusicBee) gives me this message: "Unable to start playback (Error = BASS_ERROR_BUFLOST)"
That's everything I can think of. Any ideas?

I see that you are having a frustrating time with the sound to your external speakers. Have you tried connecting the speakers to another computer to see if is a hardware issue with the speakers? Do the regular speakers work? What is your product number as there are several models in the dv6 series?

One way that it got fixed one time was when i plugged in an external mic i borrowed from a friend and unplugged. after that my integrated mic started working again. the next day it stopped working again.
I have tried everything possible to try and fix it.
    - Went to sound disabled/enabled it.
    - uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers.
    - installed other drivers such as realtek
    - used the windows microphone troubleshoot.
    - tried configuring the microphone.
    - even tried system restore, but i only had like 2 restore points since my laptop is relatively new

  • Audio randomly stopped working

The sound on my computer randomly stopped working yesterday. I think it happened when I installed wine, but I'm not sure...I use alsa and it worked before. I tried rebooting a few times and reinstalling alsa, which didn't help. I did unmute in alsamixer, so that should be ok. From lspci:
00:08.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1)
I don't know what other information is necessary, so please tell me what other info would help figure out the problem. I don't see how wine would affect the audio as I had it installed before and the sound worked, I uninstalled for a while to attempt to get rid of left over menu items of uninstalled Windows programs which didnt work but thats not really a problem. I installed Wine again and I have problems this time. I've tried to get sound from my laptop speakers and headphones and through audacious and youtube, and nothing worked. I looked at the alsa page on the wiki, under https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … on_Startup but that is only for people who have multiple sound cards, which I don't (as far as I know lol). Audio is fairly important for me (not vital but still... ) so please help. I probably didn't supply enough information, so tell me if there are any log files I should post or something. I looked through /var/log but didn't see any files looked like they would have something to do with sound/alsa. Thanks

No errors, but only the first test, pcm0 worked. Everything else only gave silence. That didn't help really because audacious/youtube doesnt play either. So I guess it isn't alsa specifice, and therefore isn't wine's fault. (I think?)
It is normal that you only get audio from "HD Audio play front" unless you have a 5.1 setup, so oss works as expected.

  • Sound/Playback Stops Suddenly in Windows Vi

I have recently encountered a very strange problem with my computer: the sound/playback stops working randomly. For instance, let's say I've just rebooted my computer and have launched WMP to play some mp3s. It will work fine for anywhere from a day or two to, at minimum, a few minutes...and then, once an mp3 file finishes playing, sometimes I will hear a weird sort of "squeak" coming from the speakers--after which playback will not work--but even if I do not hear any sort of strange audio, if I click another file to play...WMP will load the media, but will not play it. The play button will switch to pause as normal, but the file will not play. The exact same thing happens in *other* media players, as well: iTunes, J. Ri'ver Media Center...even WinAMP. I have a SoundBlast X-Fi Platinum audio card, and have been running it under Windows Vista Home Premium since January with no problems. I have all the current Vista drivers installed for it, and *have* had them installed for months. I'm really not sure whether this problem is software- or hardware-related, hence the reason I'm crossposting this to?Microsoft's Vista?forums as well. What should my next step be? I'm not really sure where to go from here. Thank you!?Dere C. F. Pegritz

I have the same problem here too. Vista Ultimate 64bit4Gb RamX-fi Extreme Gamer Pro?Currently have to re-boot when it happens. I have just installed the new drivers (30 May) - I will see if this has any effect!?RegardsBrian.

  • Satellite C650 sound has stopped working

I've had my laptop for about 6months and have had no problems with the sound until now.
I have recently done a windows update and a few hours after my sound has stopped working completely.
I have updated the driver (Conexant Cx20671 smart audio hd) after that failed i un-installed and reinstalled the driver off the toshiba downloads, after restarting again no sound.
When i have media player on, the sound mixer recognizes there is something playing but there is no sound coming out the speakers
    _*please can someone help!!!*_

Ok, this means that the sound driver is OK.
Please go to the control panel -> sound -> Playback tab
Here you have to check if the speakers are set as default device.
Furthermore mark the speakers and click on settings button.
There you can also check the volume level.

  • USB Ports Randomly Stop Working

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook with Windows 7. All of the ports, 2 2.0 and 2 3.0 ports, began to randomly stop working. My mouse light would still light up, but the mouse wouldn't work. If I rebooted the entire laptop, all of the ports would come back on for a short period of time before they randomly shut off again. They will also come back on for a short period of time if I close the lid for a few seconds and reopen it. However, lately, the 3.0 ports have stopped working entirely and the 2.0 ports stopping is becoming more frequent.
The first time I noticed this was when I was testing a micro usb cable (it has stopped charging and I was testing whether it was the cable or the wall adapter). I plugged the cable into one of the 2.0 ports and it gave me a USB surge warning. Other than that, I haven't received any notices. The drivers are up to date. I have uninstalld the root hubs multiple times. I have tried all kinds of Power plans for the laptop. Nothing works. The USB ports still stop working, and it's becoming increasingly more frustrating.

    Hello Abby_Renee,
With the USB 3.0 port not working, and your 2.0 port working intermittently, I would suggest the following document Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 7) for troubleshooting.
In this document there is a specific option for USB 3.0 ports stop working, which would be the best steps to follow for your 3.0 ports. Now for the 2.0 ports, I would suggest USB device not detected by Windows (no device name in device manager), or the other option is USB devices are detected by Windows but are not working properly. The last two options are dependant on the specific errors you are experiencing.
Please let me know the outcome of the troubleshooting steps.
    Good Luck!

  • Ethernet Port randomly stopped working - u310 ultrabook

    Hi,
So my Ethernet Port on the u310 Ideapad has randomly stopped working - by that I mean that when I plug in my LAN wire, the lights will show only when I switch on my laptop, till the Windows logo comes on, which is when the lights of the port go off and the port refuses to work.
I need LAN pretty urgently, so I was wondering if someone could please help me out! Thanks!

    Hi Ipsh,
thanks for posting and welcome to the community. Based from your post there is apossibility that it it could be hardware. But however before we confirm let just trya few setting and software adjustment first. At this point I was just wondering if you have tried doing a software update, I would suggest you to uninstall the current drivers you have now and reinstall the drivers below.
    http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/0wla01ww.exe
Please be informed that the driver above is meant for windows 7, if you have another operating system installed do let me know.

  • Sound randomly stops and starts

    Hello,
Over 2 days, as I watch Netflix, or listen to music on other apps, my sound randomly stops and starts.  I have no control of it.  I do not have to touch my ipod when this happens, it does this on its own.  On for 20 min, off for 5 min, on for 5, off for 2, on for 1 min, off for 15 min.  It ossolates randomly through time.
I hard reboot, but this works or does not work (for a while).  Any ideas?

  • K8t800 onboard sound randomly stops until restart

my onboard sound seems to randomly stop working at times.
my 5.1 speakers have a power/volume knob that clicks the power off when you turn the knob all the way down.
the only consistency i've found is that sometimes i'll turn the volume all the way down, but stop before actually turning the speakers off.
then i'll go away for a while and come back to a computer with absolutely no audio.
i don't think the problem is with the speakers, because i can reboot and my sound comes back. i've also tried cycling power on the speakers via the power switch and also unplugging the whole system.
i've never been listening to music and then had the sound go out. it only happens when i leave the computer for a while and then come back.
my only guess is the gnomes that live under my desk are playing tricks on me.

I consulted my grandmother on this one. She said the gnomes could be unhappy. U need to leave some oatmeal on the floor for them to eat. This could make them stop sabotaging ur computer
    Anywayz,
I do think it is ur sound system. My subwoofer turns off when I don't use it, or when the sound is very faint.
It switches itself on again when it is feeded louder sounds.
Subwoofers use power doing nothing, so I gues it is a usefull feature.

  • Audigy SE sound randomly stop

So I got this card and installed it and the drivers and everything worked swimmingly. Then, all of a sudden, my sound just stops working. Seriously - just stopped. I immediately checked to see if i muted anything or any of that jazz, and nothing was muted. I ran the diagnostics test and and said everything was fine! I un-installed and re-installed the drivers - didn't help. I "repaired" the drivers - nada. Then during one of my reboots I got the blue screen of death! Cool. I restarted again and windows successfully loaded so i decided to disable the Sound Blaster card and go back to my onboard sound - just to make sure THAT, atleast, works. It worked fine, and so i decided to enable sound blaster - disable onboard - and reinstall the drivers. And that didn't work.
I've contacted tech support but apparently that takes a hot 24 hours and I'd like to return this card TODAY if it's defecti've...

$ Did you get a solution on this issue, I'm having the same, even formated/reimaged from XP to SEVEN, and it worked at the beggining of the installation, it has stopped working just now. The weird thing is that it sounds perfectly in my linux install  ... I only use windows for sound/related task, I'm a musician.

  • Hi my abode photoshop cs 5.1 stop working for windows 7

abode photoshop cs5.1 stop working for windows 7 error

I have a subwoofer and 5 speakers (2 for front, 2 for rear, 1 for center)...Philips MMS460 5.1.  Connection to the on-board RealTek HD Audio is simple, orange for the subwoofer, green for front and black for rear.I have already tried downloading the latest drivers from the motherboard manufacturers website,I have tried connecting the subwoofer connectors to different jacks (reversed black and green).
I have experimented with the settings in the RealTek HD Audio Manager and Control Panel->Sound windows.  Nothing works.
These exact same subwoofer and speakers worked perfectly fine in vISTA Home basic
    1. Disconnect the speaker system from the pc rear audio panel
    2. Remove the on-board audio using the "Add or Remove Hardware" option in Control Panel
    3. Reboot the pc, install the driver.  Re-connect the speaker system.
    4. Using the Sound applet found in Control Panel, configure the speakers for surround sound
    5. Reboot the pc.
And now resume all of that ...i have been on Realtek hd audio manager->Speaker configuration set on 5.1 making the test ...EVERITHING WORKS FINE but ...finally when i open for example WINAMP AND PLAY A SONG ....is only  played on front *or stereo..So on what im wrong?
