Sound Recorded Too Low

Hoping someone can help!
On my recent shoot, the recording volume settings were too low (I think) and after capturing to FCP the average reading is around -50 and peaking at -12.
Even upping the sound bar by the max 12dB isn't enough really to repair it. I'm a pretty basic user of FCP so don't know a lot of the technical stuff. I have Soundtrack Pro and don't know if that can help me as I don't know how to use it.
Any help would be hugely appreciated folks as stand to lose an awful lot of material..
Thanks!

The quick solution is to double your audio tracks
The quickest way to do that is to hold down the Option key while dragging the audio clip to a new track ... before releasing the clip, press the Shift key (while still holding down the Option key). This will create a duplicate clip in perfect sync with the original clip.
You can also use the Dynamic Processor filter to add more gain.

  • IdeaCentre B520 - sound recording too low, sound on Skype too low

    Hi
When I speak on Skype or use Sound Recorder to record my voice (using internal microphone), the sound is very low.
I think I have turned up every possible Microphone and Audio setting on the system to its highest.
My IdeaCentre B520 is very new and I haven't installed anything else on it other than Skype.
    OS is Windows 7 x64.
I used the Lenovo automatic check for drivers and it said all drivers up to date.
I haven't had a system with an internal microphone before, I literally just talk (loudly) at the monitor, I presume there isn't anything else I need to do?!
Thanks for any help you can give with this frustrating problem!
    Patricia

    Hello Patricia,
This is not good to know that you are encountering the issue with your new desktop.
Please make sure that the Audio driver version is 6.0.1.6294, if it is not then you may download it from the mentioned below web link.
    http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/ie/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_4706.html
If the version of the driver is same then you can try the settings.
    1. Right-click the icon of the speakers icon at the notification area, and then click “Sounds
    2. Click the tab “Recording”, and then click “Microphone” à select “Properties”.
    3. Select the tab “Listen”, and then check “Listen to this device”. Apply it, and the function will be enabled.
    Best Regards,
    Tanuj

  • Recorded too low...Remove hiss from audio?

I'm a noob at Soundbooth and I'm hoping it will help resolve a problem. I shot a video and I think the audio (voice recording) is too low. While editing in Premiere I pulled the audio up in volume and it sounded acceptable... but when burned to DVD there is a hiss. Is there anything I can do with Soundbooth to fix the volume and eliminate the hiss.  The simpler the explaination the better. Thanks!

re 1 & 3- there's a description of how to do this in the STP manual. Just look under the help section and it'll be there. Just read it this weekend and got it to work for me and believe me, I'm not the shapest knife in the drawer. One bit of advice, make an extra sequence before you export to STP so you don't mess up your original audio.
Regarding how to remove the hiss, unfortunately it's not a one size fits all. Jay Rose wrote an article entitle "Shh- the silent art of noise reduction" or something close to that. Definitely try to find that article if you can at DV.com You can always try a low cut or shelf. Start at 130 Hz Male to 200 Hz female and back off if it cuts too off (makes it sound too thin). There's supposed to be a way to compensate for this by doing an eq bump 3 x the frequency you cut or something like that. You can also cut or shelve frequecies above 12000 Hz. Then there's using a downward expander, but that's a little tricky with what STP comes with stock imo. Expanders are better for film/video than noise gates as they are much less abrupt. I would use noise reduction as my last resort and almost never use it at all. A lot of these filters can be applied in FCP.
Honestly, if you ask at the DV.com audio forum I'm sure they'll give you the advice you need. Jay Rose did write a book on post production audio that you might be interested in as well. Pretty much all of what I'm trying to tell you comes from it or that aricles. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost that book.

  • Sound system too low!

After upgrading to Mavericks, all sound system are too low. I can't hear a thing if my volume is at 4 or 5 block, especially on Messages.
On Mountain Lion I don't had this problem. There is any way to fix that?

Since your PowerBook has a Line-In I'd suggest a better solution than an iMic would be a small mixer like the Behringer UB502 Eurorack Mixer for about $30. It will give you a lot more control over the levels.

The sound on my mac is too low.  I have the settings as high as they will go.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
One thing can help is the following.  Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.  Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.  Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'.  Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows and see if this has helped at all.

  • Portege R500 audio problem: sound volume too low

The sound volume on my R500 is ridiculously low. Only with volume maxed out (100) and using headphones do I hear anything at all, and even then it's way too low to be useful. I can just make out the test sounds in the left and then right earphone when using the test sound found at Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers (there are no Headphones to be selected) -> Properties -> Advanced -> Test. Unplugging the headphones I hear nothing from the speakers, due to the (very low) sounds made by the fan and HDD. Playing music (with headphones) I can just make out that sounds are being produced, but I can't even make out what is playing.
I've tested the things mentioned in the "Satellite 5105-S901 Sound is very low (even on max volume) using supplied Toshiba driver" thread with no success (including Loudness Equalization).
I'm running Vista Business 32bit, and have tried the driver_audio_realtek26117B.exe, driver_audio_realtek_TC00157600B.exe, and Vista_Win7_R243_x86.exe driver files, and also used the  util_mute_off_25847B.exe utility.
Enabling mute makes the already faint sounds go completely silent, so I don't think it's a mute issue.
Jack detection does work, I can see that in the Realtek HD Audio Manager program. Using that program's sound test (Speaker Configuration) I have to go to a completely silent room, and even then I only hear something in the right earphone. (I think; it's so darn low I could be imagining I hear it.)
Does anyone have any ideas what I can try next? I can boot to XP or Linux if anyone has any ideas on how to get sound there, just to get started. (They're silent as well, I haven't done as extensive testing under those as under Vista.)

    Update:
Tried increasing the volume in control panel -> Realtek HD audio manager. No success.
I have used a bunch of different drivers, both from toshiba's website and realtek's.
Recently did a fresh XP install on another hard drive (don't have Vista install media), tried both 5.10.0.5869 and 5.10.0.6066 drivers (5.10.0.6066 is from march 13, 2010), sound still as low no matter what I do.
Did the really desperate thing: bought a new (used) sound module on ebay ("Toshiba Portege R500 (PPR50E-00L048EN) USB jack" on ebay.co.uk), but it has the same problem as the original one.
I was thinking perhaps the sound module doesn't get enough power from the motherboard, but since there is some sound (although very low), the USB jack on the module works, the headphone/mic jack detection works, and the diagnostics found in the Control Panel all say that the device is working OK, I don't think it's a hardware problem.
I'm guessing there is a problem with the drivers initializing the sound to a ridiculously low setting, and increasing the volume level to 100 makes it go up to a level equal to perhaps 2 in a regular system. That should be solved by a fresh install, but it isn't.
Perhaps the BIOS messes up the sound? But re-flashing the BIOS doesn't help...
    Anyone got any other ideas?
I've googled and found people having problems with low sound volume on other laptops using the ALC262 chip, but no general solution.

I tried to use the windows digonistic and it tell me it can't be as defaul device ......
so any one have a new Idea so that O can fix this with out format my computer ????
    please help me

    Hi
I had the same problem after installing linux fedora. Barely audible headphones and perfectly working speakers. I tried everything latest drivers etc none of them worked. The only thing that worked for me was this
    1) power down the computer.
    2) go into the bios and disable the sound. ( make sure you save this new configuration )
    3) Reboot the computer and start windows.  You will obviously now have no sound at all as you have disabled the inbuilt sound card.
    4) power down the computer again and go back into the bios and ENABLE the sound again ( save your settings and restart your computer into windows again)
    5) After doing this I had the sound working properly through the headphones and the speakers
I hope this helps. I think this solution works because after you disable the sound in bios and restart windows gets rid of all the sound and device settings. then when you re-enable the sound windows resets the device to it's factory default.  I might be wrong on the explanation but the 5 steps above worked for me. I hope it works for you to.

  • Narration sound too low or else have background hiss/hum

I am using PreE8 on Windows7 64-bit.  My sound card is....hmmmm, my spec sheet says "Integrated 7.1 Audio."  I don't know what that means.  Perhaps that is the "house" sound on my computer, a Dell Studio XPS 435MT (lack of a decent sound card may be part of the problem now that I think about it).
Continuing on, I am trying to overdub a video clip by muting it, and recording dialog to the narration track.  I have a cheapo desktop Labtec microphone.  I have two settings in the Control panel to adjust microphone volume.  one is labelled "Microphone" and the other "Microphone Boost".  I have the gain in the PreE8 narration window at max.   For both the front and back microphone jacks, with the control panel "microphone" setting to 100 but the boost at zero, the volume of my narration is too low to hear.  If I slide the Microphone Boost to +30db (the max) in the Control Panel, the volume of the narration is barely okay, but I get a loud background hiss/hum that is unacceptable.
My goal is to record my voice overdubs with as little extra work as possible, so I am looking for a setup that will allow us to speak into a microphone at normal volumes and to end up with a clean narration clip that I can simply use straight in my project with no denoising, no cleaning up in audacity, etc.
I read in another thread that a condenser microphone might help.  Will it?  If so, I don't want to break the bank.  Can someone recommend a condenser microphone that will record voice well, but not cost a fortune?
Might my lackluster sound card be part of the problem?  If so, what recommendations are there for sound cards to record voice well?  I am only looking to record dialog--no music, no explosions--which is why I didn't get a high end soundcard in the first place.
Lastly, is there anything else I am missing here with respect to recording audio in PreE8?  Because we are trying to sync dialog to existing video, it is imperative we be able to watch the clip while recording dialog, so I don't know that recording outside of PrE8 is an option.  or is it?  Is there a way to do this easily using, say, audacity.  ( I have a great old USB microphone that used to work with Audacity years ago, maybe this might work?).
    MargtheCar

The microphone used can make all of the difference, as can a noise-free environment.
HERE is a good one. I use similar. I would go with a mono, but then you will want your narrator within the pickup pattern. (See below). If this is out of the budget, then I'd stop by a guitar shop and discuss mics with the salespeople. They should know about mic'ing single instruments, and singers, and have many such mics available at differing prices. Discuss the cables, as you will likely be using direct connection via 1/8" connector, and not have a phantom power source - hence the need for a powered mic.
Now, it sounds like you have more than one narrator. The capture pattern of the particular mic will make a difference. I use a tight cardioid mono mic, because I am the narrator. If you have more than one narrator, you'll want a much broader pattern. Having a powered condenser mic will likely get a usable signal, without having to boost the signal - adding that noise that you are getting.
Seating your narrators very close to one another will be helpful, as will adding some sound baffling to keep the fans in the computer, etc. from being picked up. Sonofoam is great for this, but one can do similar by just placing some cardboard panels with upholstery  foam glued to it, or maybe even blankets. Do NOT wrap the computer's case, but place these between it, and the narrators. Depending on your room, you might even want to hang blankets behind the narrators to cut down on reflected (echos) sounds from a live room.
Now, if you do need to record in Audacity, or similar, and watch the movie, you can just Export/Share the Timeline as a Video-only file. Play that in WMP, or similar, and use Audacity to record. I use Adobe Audition, and it incorporates Video in its GUI, so I just Export/Share and Import that into Audition to be played, while I record.
Your sound chip is probably fine, so long as the level of the signal from the mic is adequate for it. I like to have my narration peaking at about -6dB, so that there is no clipping. I can still boost that slightly in my editing program, if needed.
I have several panels of foamcore with sonofoam on them. One is between me and the computer's case. Two more form a large "V", with me in the center of that "V." This effectively kills all room reflections. I just use a couple of lightstands besides my chair, and use some spring clamps to attach those panels. Blankets would work fine too. Your setup might look a bit odd, should someone drop by, but what you want to do is eliminate any liveliness in the room, block things like those fans, and be sure to turn off the heater/AC and kill any audio sources from the rest of the house.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
