Sound's acting up - 5.1 speakers with Firewave

I'm using a 5.1 audio system on an iMac, and I'm using a Griffin Firewave to make this possible.
For the last few weeks, it's been acting up.
The sound's been a bit screwed up, but bareable.
Well, just now, it stopped working completely.
I've tried reinstalling the Firewave software, and it hasn't worked. I've restarted twice to no avail. What else could it be?

Still no sound from speakers with X-Fi under VIST

Update!
!!! This morning I tried moving my SB X-Fi to another PCI slot. After the move I booted into VISTA64 and the SB drivers were reinstalled by the OS. I then switched from my onboard sound device to the X-Fi and tested the speakers and for the first time I am getting sound out of my speakers. To me this would imply one of 2 things. Either the bios was not handling the first PCI slot correctly or the Creative drivers have a problem when the card is placed in this slot. I would rule out the first possibility since the card would work in this slot under VISTA32. Further when I moved the card I had to swap it with my ATI TV card which does work in this slot. My motherboard is an ASUS A8NE NForce4 Ultra with bios version 03. Well at least i am finally able to get this card functioning under VISTA64!!
!!! __________________________________________________ _____________________________________?I have tried many different installations of the SB X-Fi drivers but have been unsuccessful of getting any sound from this card through my speakers. I have been successful with VISTA32 but not with VISTA64. The latest attempt used the installation CD I purchased from Creative. Even after all the latest updates were installed I still had no sound.
I have posted my system configuration in a previous posting but did not get any advice from this posting other then the recognition that my configuration indicated I had 3 audio devices. On this last attempted installtion I had the Creative Labs USB modem disconnected and the Logitech Web Camera disconnected as well as the on board sound device disabled. This made no difference. I do have the latest BIOS isntalled for my mother board. Like indicated above I am able to get the SB X-Fi working under VISTA32. I primarily use VISTA64 simply because I believe it is the better of the VISTA versions interms of over all stability and performance. Another update:?Later in the day when I went to use my computer I did not get any sound from my speakers. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them, moving the SB X-Fi card to a different PCI slot and then back to the slot that it worked in this morning. I am unable to get any sound from my speakers. Another interesting note is that when it was briefly working the THX Console worked. Now when I try an open the THX Console it crashes. Also I notice when I open the open the Creative Console Launcher the speaker, EAX and other features are not functioning like they were when it was working. This seems to tell me that something is not getting initialized correctly. Alot of times after initial boot-up all I have available is the SPDIF output available, which I am not using. I either reboot which usually results in the speakers being available although no sound out of them or I disable then reenable the driver from the device manager to make the speakers available. I sure hope some one at Creative can provide an answer to my problem. ThanksJohn

How to use 5.1 computer speakers with PS3 via Sound Blast

Hi,
i dont have the money to buy a second set of surround sound speakers to use with my PS3. I already have a set of Creative 5. surround computer speakers that connect via 3.5mm jacks into my sound card, there is no optical port on the speakers.
Is there a way to use these speakers with the PS3 as well. I was thinking along the lines of could i buy a new Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme audio card which has an optical-in socket and connect my PS3 to the sound card via optical cable, and use the new Sound Blaster as an amp to redirect the sound to the computer speakers back out along the sound cards 3.5mm jack connections.
I have no idea if this would work or not so before i buy the new sound card i could anybody confirm or deny whether this works. And if not any suggestions?

thanks again but perhaps i didnt explain clearly enough. I dont want to have simultaneous optical input and output, other wise there wouldnt be a problem. The speakers i have are 5. computer speakers. The computer is connected to them via 3*3.5mm jacks from the sound card to the sub, the other sattelite speakers are connected by audio rca to the sub. My speakers have no optical-in on them, hence having to to re-route the sound through a sound card (if it would work). Essentialy using the sound card as an amp or as a big optical to 3*3.5mm jack adaptor.

until now i had a dell xps with xp windows and it worked just fine now i got a lenovo 3000 n 00 series and i cant put the pcmcia creative card to work with the speakers , the windows here is vista , i don't know if it is because the vista or not..

I dont think it is driver related issue. The problem must be something else.
I dont know which sound card is inside but open please control panel and check if there is listed Realtek audio options or something like that and check all options there.
In audio port where you can connect headphones is placed small switch that enables or disables internal speakers. It is also possible that this small switch doesnt work properly.
Check sound settings at first and come back with some feedback.

Is anyone else having problems with 5.1 speakers with iTunes 7?

After i installed iTunes 7, the muscic from my library was only playing in 2.1. Does anyone know how to get sound coming out of all my speakers (mine are 5.1). I have quicktime set at 48khz, 16bit, and 5.1, but i still only get music as though it was set at 2.1. I miss having surround sound so please if anyone knows anything about this i would appreciate it. My soundcard is the soundblaster audigy 2 ZS

I am having more or less the same problems as you guys. Currently I use a soundblaster audigy 4 with "CMSS 3D" function ... it used to work with itunes but started to get all weird with the 7.0 update. If nobody knows how to fix this I will have to use 6.xx again :/

My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number. I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem. Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back. It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.

As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

Functionality to sync local speakers with distant speakers in iTunes 6 gone

In version 6 of iTunes it was possible to sync distant speakers with local speakers even though it often resulted with an error. Now in version 7 it is no longer possible. With your Airfoil one can "monitor locally" but the sound is out of sync with the distant speakers. It was the main reason I bought an Airport Express and I now feel cheated.
I previously posted a subject about the error but it went unanswered (Topic: Unknown Error -3256 with itunes).

I'm using iTunes 7 and Airport Express and i don't have any problem. i'm always listening the music on local and wireless on the same time and it's never out of sync. !!!
You must have a problem somewhere, maybe you should re-install iTunes 7.

Seeking a LogicPro bass that sounds good on earbuds or heavy speakers?

Some people will listen to my music on earbuds and some through speakers with heavy magnets -- the bass sound in particular is notably different in these two venues. I'm seeking a bass instrument (guitar? upright? unknown?) that can be heard over the full range of speakers, from the nearly nonexistent bass inside an Air, to the acceptable but low fidelity earbuds, to heavy floor speakers with the ability to shake the windows. I don't want to shake the windows, but I do want to be heard through the Air. Can these two extremes ever meet for a bass instrument?

I had a similar problem a while back. The issue was with the speaker jack plug and the macbook phone socket. For some reason the jack plug was not a good a fit, as say the jack that comes with the iphone ear phones. A few tiwsts and turns of the speaker jack plug and it eventually became a snug(ish) fit. Have a look on you tune. There are a couple of videos on there that might help if this is not the issue.

No sound when playing videos/youtube but speakers work. Mute is not on that I can see. Volume is maxed. Devices are enabled. Speakers tested. Have tried with and without headphones.
I tried to do a Driver Update but Toshiba Support doesnt recognize my model/serial numbers so I dont know what Driver to use.

Can you use Apple Mac speakers with Macmini?

My old Apple mac speakers - the ones in transparent plastic hemispheres - come with a 1.5mm jack, but the Macmini has a standard 2.5mm socket. Is that because the voltage or something is different? If you fit the right jack, will they work OK?

Those are the speakers that were shipped with the Cube G4. They are analog, but unpowered. They require an external amplifier. The Cube had an amp built-in. For a while, Griffin made an external amp adapter. They no longer do.
These speakers will not work properly with a typical computer sound output, even if you come up with an adapter that makes the physical connection. The resulting sound output would be a whisper.
My suggestion: Buy new speakers and consider the plastic spheres as nice paperweights, or decorative antiques for your shelf.
