Sound Scheme "greyed out", no Internet so

I'm not 00% sure if this is related to my X-Fi, but it is definetely a wierd problem I can't find the solution for. Basically, when I go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Sounds, and try to play a sound from the Windows default theme, the grey box to play the sound remains grey. Additionally, none of the sound scheme sound effects ever play, either, even though I have it set to play them (no sound at startup). Even wierder is another problem with the sounds and audio devices menu: My MIDI music playback default choice (under the Audio tab) is just a blank line, and if I try to change it to "SB X-Fi Synth A [A000]" or any other device and hit apply, it just resets itself when I open the Sounds and Audio devices menu again. Which means I can't play MIDI files, which is also very frustrating. Same for Voice Playback under the Voice tab, it is stuck permanently at blank, even though my sound card is an option.
I really could care less about the sound scheme problem, but I have a nagging suspicion that it's related to a bigger problem that I have. I get no sound from Flash videos/movies on YouTube/other internet related things. In almost all my games, the sound is perfect, but on the internet nothing works.
I'm not 00% sure when the problem started, and no one I talk to has any idea whats going on. There have been a few posts on this already, but none of them found a solution to the problem besides a complete reformat, which I really don't feel like doing right now.
Some things I've tried:
Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers (I use an mp3 player too, and I deleted all of that)
Running Dxdiag and doing all the sound tests (passed them all just fine)
Running services.msc and making sure Windows Audio is enabled.
Gone to Device Manager/Audio Codecs and made sure all codes were enabled
Made sure that there is no red x/yellow exclamation mark over my sound card in Device Manager
The only guess I have is that it is somehow related to a codec pack that I uninstalled/reinstalled, but I can't remember if that happened at the same time as the problem, since I've had this for a while but haven't tried very hard to fix it.
Thanks.

Just to finish this (lame) thread:
Took the computer to the Genius Bar.  Needed a logic bar replacement.  Fortunately, have Apple Care, or whatever it's called.

  • How to see settings when "custom level" is greyed out in Internet Explorer

Group Policy is set which causes the custom level button to be greyed out in Internet Explorer. Thus, I can't even see what settings are set let alone change them. Is there any good way to even figure out which settings are set?
And no, it's not in the Group Policy Management Console. The settings were imported from some machine a long time ago. It's not like there's a list of the settings in GPMC showing what is set. So, the only way apparently to change the setting in Group Policy is
to configure some machine with the right settings, install GPMC and import from that machine overwriting the old policy. So, I need to know what's set now (not that I necessarily even want to do that).
machine in question: Windows Server 2008 R2 datacenter
IE version: 9 with all patches

    Hi,
Please understand that all IE security settings are stored in the following registry keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
If you want to check the settings on the machine, you should local the registry keys in Registry Editor. If you want to import the settings from one machine, please just right click on the
target registry key and choose Export to export these settings to a .reg file.

  • Internet Options greyed out in Internet Explorer 9 because of GPO settings in Windows 2008 AD

Internet Options greyed out in Internet Explorer 9 because of GPO settings in Windows 2008 AD.
I am trying to find out what GPO setting is causing this so I can change I.E. settings at a desktop running Windows 7.
A GPO has I.E. locked down so settings are greyed out for Intranet settings so I can't change Intranet settings.
How do I enable so I can save changes with a GPO?

Classic GPO using Administrative Templates, is designed to do exactly that (disable the UI).
Previously, you could use IEM in preference mode.
Now, you'll need to use GPP, but there are a couple of limitations.
Check the IE10 IEAK documentation (it's useful for understanding what you can do with GPP)

why does my sound icon grey out and doesn't allow me to make changes on the system settings

When you go to System Preferences > Sound what does it say for Output? Have you had headphones plugged in? Sometimes the headphone jack gets stuck thinking it has something plugged in when there isn't anaything there. SMC also has something to do with Sound:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • TS1574 Hi, I dont have sound on my imac. The options in sound are greyed out and there is nothing in the output list

itunes and you tube are not working.  There is no sound. When I am in itunes and play a song, the song does not start.
I checked system preferences, sound.  There is no output options and the input options are greyed out.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks

Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers.
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • Sound Icon Greyed Out - Midi AutoAggDevice auto-created

Whenever I restart my computer or log out/back in, the sound icon in the menu bar is greyed out. When I check the sound preferences in system preferences, it says that the output is: "AutoAggDevice". I gain back control after selecting "Internal Speakers". I have tried setting them as my default, but it always defaults to "AutoAggDevice".
I have gone into the MIDI preferences (Audio Midi Setup) and there are many extra devices, but when I try and remove them, they come right back after a restart. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't affecting my default output, but it is getting really frustrating.
I have also run a repair disk permissions to no avail.
Does anyone know how to permanently delete these auto-created midi devices or at least get the default audio setting to stay as internal speakers?
    Thanks.

  • Newbie question: Why is "learn sound model" greyed out when trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display?

I am trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display. The first edit on a new file, this process works fine:
    1. use brush to cover sound
    2. right click, learn sound model
    3. effects/noise-reduction-restoration/Sound Remover
The next time I try to remove another sound in the file, "learn sound model" is greyed out. I have to close the file and reopen to be able to make another edit. What on earth is going on? Can it only learn one sound model or something?
I'm a newbie, so thanks in advance for your advice!

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Sound icon greyed out

Hello - this problem just started for me a couple days ago.  I cannot tell what action causes it, but now restarting and resetting my PRAM settings does not fix it.  I also tried a fix I read where I created a login item that resets the audio.  I ALSO tried plugging in headphones.  None of these are fixing the problem.  I am running OSX Lion 10.7.4.  Please help!

I do live in the US - I just havent been to an Apple store in a LONG time, ha ha.
I thought this problem had fixed itself, as it hadn't happened in a couple of days - but now has happened again. >:(
Any other ideas from anyone?  I don't know how soon I will be able to go to an actual Apple store...
Edit: Now that I think about it, this seems to happen after I watch something with Quiktime.  For some reason all my videos began trying to open with Mocha, which didn't work.  When I would tell them to open with Quicktime, they would play fine, but after I was done would have a grey sound icon.  I was using QT last night for the first time since this post and this morning is the first time it has happened again...

  • Has anyone experience a problem with not being able to add a drumbeat loop to a prerecorded project?  When I open the loop browser, there are only a few options available.  The rest are greyed out.  I can only choose individual drum sounds, not full beats

I have created a project and recorded 2 tracks, one with a guitar and the other vocals.  I would like to add a drum loop, but when I pull up the loop browser, all of the normal selections aren't available.  Some are greyed out, including "Beats".  "All Drums" is available, but when I click on it it pulls up some cymbal sounds only.  I've opened some old recordings in GB to see if this is a consistent issue, but it's not.  Only this one project won't allow me to use drum loops.  Which leads me to believe there is something I have selected or not selected within the project that's not allowing me to see all the loops.  Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • My macbook pro's sound is not working properly. It flashes from normal to grey in the menu bar up top, and when greyed out I cannot do anything with it, and it sits at max.

In system preferences > sound > output, it will switch from normal internal speakers > built-in, to headphones > built-in, to digital out > built-in, to headphones > headphone port, to digital out > headphone port- it's nuts! This is all without having anything actually plugged into the headphone jack. While it is greyed out (which happens randomly and on any of the settings), there is no sound whatsoever and it says, "The selected device has no output controls.". Also coinciding with this, my computer has begun to suddenly run extremely slow and lags a lot. Is there a way to fix this? I already tried updating my computer, and restarting it, and it didn't help. I'm wondering if maybe the headphone jack somehow was shorted while I had some speakers plugged in for gaming...? Or is this something I need to send my computer in to be repaired for?
It was custom-ordered a few years ago, and unfortunately the warranty has expired. :/ Perfect timing.

I have this same issue and have been struggling with it for a while.  I really just need to get it into Apple Store to be fixed most likely - but avoiding the hassle and time needed to do so.
    Things I've come across:
Something inside of the headphone jack is not right, such that it randomly thinks headphones or some other type of optical audio device are plugged in.  you will see a red light inside the jack occasionally when it happens.
You might try doing PRAM and/or SMC reset ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 )

Many of your points are totally legitimate.
    This one, however, is not:
…To put it another way, the design of the site seems to be geared much more towards its regular users than those the site is supposedly trying to "help"…
The design and management of the forums for more than five years have driven literally dozens of the most valuable contributors and "regulars" away from the forums—permanently.
The only conclusion a prudent, reasonable person can draw from this state of affairs is that Adobe consciously and deliberately want to kill these forums by attrition—without a the PR hit they would otherwise take if they suddenly just shut them down.

    See this https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20131119125513AAtRloc
I just did it. To enter DFU mode, I had to use "method 3" on this post

Too bad my 4S is 2 years old. Wifi is dead. I had to upgrade to 5S, but 5S is soooooo much faster than 4S so it's kind of good outcome. Without the 4S breaking down, a stingy person like me would have never upgraded the phone.

  • Want to disable/"grey out" dial-up connection "settings" button in the "connections" tab of Internet Options

Hi, I'm looking to "grey out" a dial-up connection for some users in workplace, so that they are forced to use our VPN client in order to access the web. Does anyone know if this is possible?
I know you can disable all settings on that tab using local group policy, (e.g. Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer) but I only want to disable a specific dial-up connection (for usb 3G modems).
I've read of various IE settings being locked down in the registry here, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions, but havent seen the settings I want.
The actual connection is visible here, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections, I just cant figure out how to grey it out. Any ideas? Thanks!
