Sound through computer AND speakers

Hi there!
Is it possible to play from iTunes either through the computer and the speakers connected in the AirPort iTunes Express simultaneoulsy? Or do you have to choose between listening in the computer or in the speakers in the station? How do we get it to play both? I have my computer in a room, and the airport in the living room, and all I wanted was sound everywhere...
Regards
CV

To play sound through both the Mac's speakers and the Airport Express at the same time, you need to use the application Airfoil.
There WILL be a noticeable delay between the sound output of the two sources.

Have you tried another pair of earphones? It may be that the headphone jack is failing. You can, if you are competent, replace it yourself or get it fixed by a third-part place. See the following:

I cannot get sound through my laptop speakers ever since I used an external digital speaker.  Cannot seem to switch back to lap top speakers in my SYSTEM PREFERENCES...only showing DIGITAL out put option

    Hi there Lutostan,
It sounds like you have disconnected the digital audio speakers from your MacBook Pro but all you have available in your audio settings. Take a look at this info from the following article named:
Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
If the Internal Speakers option does not appear in the Output tab and your computer is not a Mac Pro, check that Digital Out is present as in the image below:
Confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
Check to see if a red light is lit in the line-out port. If so, your Apple computer may need service.
If you do not see a red light, proceed to step 5.
If the issues persist, contact Apple support for further troubleshooting assistance.

  • Play Sound Through Display AND Connected Computer.

I bought and connected my new 27" LED Display to my 27" iMac today and would like to know if its possible to play sound through both the display AND the computer at the same time. I know to go into the sound settings in system preferences, however only the option is given to chose the sound output to come from either one or the other.
Is it possible to play the audio through both?
    Thanks in advance!

I downloaded this program with the provided link - after changing the settings as advised I began to get that loud static white noise like sound out of the iMac speakers (which apparently is a problem many people have experienced with their 27" i7 iMacs). As soon as I deleted the Audio Hijack program the speakers went back to normal. (Thank God!)
If anyone else has any suggestions as to how I can play sound through both the iMac and the display at the same time this would be great appreciated.
Thanks for trying to help though Malcom

  • Apple TV plays some sounds through computer speakers

    Hi all,
Very strange...when I am in Apple TV, connected to the TV through HDMI, if I am in YouTube, for example, and I am doing a search and clicking around the alphabet to enter a search word, some sounds come from the mac speakers (which are right beside the TV) and some come from the TV. It like if I arrow right, it comes from the computer and if I arrow left, it comes from the TV speakers. Very odd.
    ANy ideas?

Has anyone figured this out? I bought this digital-to-audio (DAC) at Amazon: http://amzn.to/T8dmtR - the most expensive/best review one given that I didn't want to deal with the headaches the cheaper ones had. Here's what it can and can't do:
I can use it to play music through my Apple TV (3rd gen) just fine when using Airplay, HOWEVER the first ten seconds are an incredibly horrifying output of high-decible static. The way around this is to disconnect the cables when first playing music, wait ten seconds, then connect. I can control the volume through the Mac/iOS device, but everything is at bottom one-fourth of the volume setting, without much control. It works fine enough.
As for using Apple TV to watch movies, forget it. There's no way to control volume, and the minimum volume is way too loud. It seems a receiver is required, as people with home stereo systems have no problem at all.
A guy in this blogged used another DAC model, but not sure if he's the only one that got it to work: http://blog.jcarter.ca/?p=754
Anyone successfully connect Apple TV to computer speakers yet? It'd be ideal if the same solution applied to a TV with optical output.

  • Fuzzy Sound Through Computer Speakers?

I recently purchased a mini. When I listen to audio through my BOSE powered speakers using the analog signal, the sound sounds fuzzy (technical term). It doesn't seem to matter if I'm listening to MPEGs I've ripped or AACs I've purchased through iTunes. Is this normal? My Windows machine sounds better using the same speakers.
    Message was edited by: MikeIto

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
No, that doesn't sound normal. The quality of analog audio from the mini is generally pretty good - much the same as you would expect from other systems, and should be similar to your Windows system.
Do other sounds (you can play system alert sounds from within the sound effects tab of the Sounds preference pane) also cause the same sort of fuzzy result?
While you have the sound preference pane open, try changing the output volume of the system and compensating by turning the Bose system up and down. Can you change the amount of fuzziness by changing the relative volumes of system and speakers? If so, then it would point to a possible mis-match between the two.

  • Cannot hear any sound through my external speakers - help!

I'm running 10.6.4 on my imac 27". Can hear sound though the internal speakers, but even when I plug externals in and restart I can't see any option in the sound system preferences to let me hear through the external speakers. It's odd. Can anyone help?

    More information will help.
Is this a problem that just started for you, or have you never been able to plug in headphones or external speakers and have them work?
Are you sure you are plugging into the correct jack on the computer? On my slightly older iMac I sometimes reach around to the back and hit the wrong jack.
When I open "Sound" in System Preferences and hit the "Output" tab, I see "Internal Speakers" listed. Then when I plug in my headphones the "Internal Speakers" automatically changes to "Headphones."
Is this what you see on your computer?
    Good luck.

  • Can't get sound through my big speakers

    Hello all,
I just hooked up my new Apple TV and all works fine BUT can't get any sound through my big floor speakers, only through the tinny TV speaker (Samsung 46" LED).
The big speakers are powered by an older Onkyo FM AM receiver with no optical digital audio port. I currently enjoy sound from these speakers when watching my Comcast cable stations or my DVD player, choosing respectfully between video 1 and video 2 ports on the receiver.
Question: Do I need a new receiver with an optical digital audio port, to be then connected to the Apple TV via this cable ?
My Comcast cable box has such a port. What would happen if I connected an optical digital audio cable from the Comcast box to my Apple TV ? Would the sound find its way into my big speakers while watching Netflix ? That's all I want.......
I don't have this darn cable now to try this.
    Thanks guys.

Hmmm....would that limitation be noticeable by average listeners ? I don't even know what 5.1 audio is.
5.1 is surround audio with L/R front, Center (mostly for speech), and L/R rear channels. You'd need 3 extra speakers for the additional channels.
The .1 refers to a subwoofer but if your main speakers produce good low frequency as it is it may not be needed as low frequencies tend to deliver less spatial information than mid/highs. If you wanted one it'd be an extra speaker.
You would notice the difference by virtue of having sounds spread around you rather than simple L/R on movies that support it (Dolby Digital 5.1). As your amp doesn't support this currently, you're not ging to miss anything going the stereo audio route for now.
I've had a 5.1 system (without the .1) for donkey's years, and yes it's fun/novel, but leads to more clutter in the room with leads extra speakers etc. In fact I've relocated my rear speakers some time ago and am just sticking with stereo for now.
Certainly worth looking into, but 5.1 is old hat anyway and more modern surround formats will utilise even more speakers for surround effects but AppleTV currently does not support these.
I'm running a pair of old tower Polk Audio speakers of my amp that vibrate the windows pretty good.
No reason you couldn't use these in a 5.1 or 5.0 system as main L/R speakers but you'd need new center and rear L/R speakers, cabling and amp +/- subwoofer.
Onkyo would still be a good bet for a quality reasonably priced amp though you'd probably find a myriad of options, possibly cheaper than your original Onkyo.

  • Getting Sprint Navigation sound through my Camry speakers

I have a Curve 8330 and a 2007 Toyota Camry with factroy bluetooth.  After I have connected the bluetooth, is there any way to get the sound from Sprint Navigation to play through my car speakers?  I did a Google search and thought I found something, but it didn't work.  It suggested unchecking the headset option for bluetooth on my phone.  I did that, but it still plays through the BB speaker.
    Anyone got any suggestions?

  • System preferences in iMac for sound output shows only headphones. How do I change this to get sound through computer? Thanks.

In sound System preferences on iMac  headphones is only option for sound output. How do I change this to get sound output through computer, as in a video etc. Thanks.

There is a switch in the jack that may be stuck. Try plugging and unplugging a headset plug into the socket a few times.
You might try dipping the headset plug into some pure alcohol, wiping it nearly dry, and repeating the process to clean/clear the socket.

  • No sound through built-in speakers

The only output device listed in System Preferences > Sound is Name: "Digital Out" ; Type: "Headphone port" and can't get sound  through the built-in speakers unless earphones are plugged in. How can I change this to the correct output device?

Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

There is no sound through the built in speakers. The mute button on the touchbar under the screen is lit up red but the icon on the screen shows that it is unmuted. I'm pretty sure that its muted through the touchbar, is there specific software to re-install the touchbar?

  • No sound through earphones but speakers are fine

    Hi,
My dv6 Pavilion, OS Windows 7 64-bit,  has suddenly stopped recognising that I have earphones plugged in. I have tried many fixes suggested on the web, run several System Restores but nothing has worked. My Windows updates are current. The only recent change I have made is to reinstall my antivirus software (McAfee) as that decided to throw a wobbly last week and kept turning itself off!
When I right click on the speaker icon on the Task Bar, the Sounds box opens and SOMETIMES the Independent Dual Headphones shows up, greyed. Underneath it says unplugged and there is a downward pointing red arrow. If I right click this area, another box shows up and Test, Set as Default Device and Set as Default Communication Device are greyed (ie, I can't click on them). Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices are both checked. Disable is also shown in black ( I can click on this).
This laptop has already been back to HP repair for replacement hard drive, fans and power problems several times. I really can't afford to be without it again for another three weeks, so if anyone has any fixes that they care to share I would be very grateful!  I am by no means a techno-whiz, so if anybody can suggest a solution can they please provide 'an idiot's guide, how to...' !
    Many Thanks.

  • I am having difficulty charging my mini pad - have tried through computer and power plug

any help appreciated with charging difficulties with mini ipad - have tried using computer and also power plug - any help appreciated

Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Sound from Headphones and Speakers

I am getting sound out of the headphones and the speakers on my laptop.  I am trying to hookup my laptop to my tv so that I can watch movies.  I have everything figured out, except that i think I disabled the headphones.  When I plugged the cable into the headphone jack on my L455 laptop and into the RGB audio in on my TV, my laptop asked me if I had connected headphones or a line out.  I wasn't thinking and switched it to a line out.  Because of this, I think i screwed it up and now can hear the audio from both the TV and laptop speakers.  When I search for the headphone driver on my laptop, they are no where to be found.  Any advice as to how to fix this problem.  I would really like to watch this movie sometime tonight without an echo from the laptop speakers!!  If I turn down the speakers, no volume goes to the TV. If I have the speakers muted, no volume goes to the TV.  If I disable the speakers, no volume goes to the TV.  I beleieve this is due to me disabling the headphones, but I can not find it on my computer!!
    Thanks, Cortney

Realtek chipsets do have a "multi-stream" option. Classic mode seems to provide the most normal result, but there was a version of the driver where the behavior was unpredictable and it wasn't possible to know what would happen.
