Sound working randomly in flash, vlc, gnome-mplayer since today

Hello,
My sound setup worked perfectly since my Arch install, but I see today that now my sound setup works randomly in flashplayer, vlc media player, and gnome-mplayer :S
My channels aren't muted in alsamixer, of course my speakers are on...
I don't see where the problem is :s
Any idea ?
Thank you

Okay, I found the problem:
I thought that this bug happened randomly, but it's not the case
In fact, I don't lost the sound, but every time I start playing a file with gnome-mplayer, the PCM channel of my sound configuration is significantly decreased
I saw that by running alsamixer when I noticed a sound problem
Is that a "feature" or a bug ?

    No, I use ALSA, not pulseaudio. Two of that files is a try to fix everything up. I use this configuration because I have
    [dkoi@DKOI_LAP ~]$ aplay -l

    But HDMI appears not to work (no controls in alsa mixer -S/PDIFs only, no sound via aplay/speaker-test), so I use PCH instead. And everything works but HTML5 sounds in FF

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Mplayer Won't Work

    I have Gnome mplayer and gecko player installed on my maching with the mplayer-mt Aur package.  Gnome-mplayer won't play any files and just says "Stopped" on the bottom.  Can't figure it out, I've tried re-installing it and the regular mplayer package too without any luck.  Anybody know what the problem might be?
    Thx

    Deleting the gnome-mplayer folder did the job.  It works now thanks.
    The only thing is, if I change any settings whatsoever in gnome-mplayer preferences, it stops again.  I guess I'll just stick to all the stock settings...

  • No Sound in Flash Videos but other sounds work fine.

    OS - Win 7 Enterprise sp1
    Flash Player version - 11.1.102.55
    RealTek High Def audio driver ver - 6.0.1.6201
    Rolling out a new Image for our offices, everything seemed ok then someone was complaining about no sound.  Turns out  Flash Videos(youtube) play but if you unplug the headphones and plug them back in you don't get audio unless your refresh the page.  This behaviour only occurs in Flash videos, Windows sounds ok, Media played through Media player ok, Quick time ok, just the Flash videos are affected.  I havent' been able to find a solution.
    Most up to date audio drivers,Flash player.
    As a side note, I did a install of nothing but Windows 7 and it does the same thing so there isn't anything I'm adding.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Mark

    If I understand properly, the audio will play all the time if you don't unplug the headphone while you are playing the flash video, then it works?  It only doesn't work when you unplug the headphone and put it in while Flash Video is playing?  And the workaround is refresh the page.
    This sounds like the expected behavior in the current player.
    If you think this is bug need to take care, you can post it to http://forums.adobe.com/community/flashplayer/using_flashplayer (release player forum) or log a bug in the bugbase.
    Thanks,
    Calise

  • No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

    Hey all, suilenroc here. With the recent advent of some high-quality Creative Drivers for my X-Fi card, I've been able to enjoy some great audio from my Exaile media player. However, sound from flash in firefox is still not forthcoming. Does anyone know how to fix this? And does anyone know how to install flash-10? For some reason, I just can't figure out how to uninstall flash 9 and install the latest version.
    Thanks! -suilenroc

    Okay, let's switch this up. Suilenroc's brother here. For the sake of convenience, just call me Suilenroc.
    So I've been using Linux for about a year now, I used to use Gentoo and moved to Arch. My bro got a creative X-Fi card a while back when we was on windows, and now switched full time to Linux because of the new sound drivers. What I just can't figure out though, if how to get the sound working on his firefox installation. I don't know whether it's a firefox issue or a flash issue, specifically.
    I've install the x-fi drivers, and am using ALSA for them, obviously. My brother doesn't know which VERSION of Arch he's using, x86 or x86_64, but it is, most definitely, arch.
    Now, I don't, myself, remember the pacman command for installing flash 10 either, and I can't seem to find it via google. From what my brother told me, he installed nspluginwrapper and nspluginwrapper-flash, and linked it to his firefox by following a tutorial. This got flash VIDEO to work, but the audio is not being output through the x-fi card or the x-fi drivers.
    Sorry for the earlier posts, I'll be taking over on this issue from here. (I've told the little guy to not get me involved unless he absolutely cannot figure the problem out himself. Well, now's one of those times. Thanks for bearing with him earlier, you can deal with me now. I know a bit more than he does when it comes to Linux.)

  • [SOLVED] gnome-mplayer not working

    When I start gnome-mplayer with verbose debugging enabled, I get the following error:
    ERROR: Unknown option on the command line: -ass
    Once I encountered this error, I tried installing libass which did not work.  I then disabled ASS from the subtitles menu.  Once I did that, I then got the following error:
    ERROR: Unknown option on the command line: -subfont-text-scale
    I believe this error is also related to the subtitle tab (but there is nothing else that I can disable).
    I am using the following versions of mplayer and gnomemplayer:
    gnome-mplayer (out of community) version=0.9.3
    mplayer (out of extra) version=dev-SVN-rUNKNOWN-4.3.2
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Gnome-mplayer default volume

    Simple question, how do I set the default volume for gnome-mplayer?
    My lack of googling skills aren't helping me.
    I remember all I had to do in a previous version (8?) is go to edit>preferences and change a slider (or dropdown box, not sure) and that would let me select the default volume.
    I'm using gnome-mplayer 0.9.2-1

    gmplayer takes the same command-line arguments as mplayer, so you can do something like:
    gmplayer -af volume=10:0 file.mp3
    The volume is in decibels (dB), and generally I use a NEGATIVE number as that's the only way to decrease the default volume by any noticeable amount. On my laptop I use -30, since the default sound is horribly loud (-30 for me sets the volume at 3%, the lowest value in mplayer using default settings -- though I'm sure you could get it to 1% tweaking the various config options out there -- I haven't done the research myself yet on this fully). You will see that the volume slider is affected as desired with this setting. In the above example, the 10:0 means 10 dB, and the number following the colon sets soft clipping off (personally, I don't bother specifying soft clipping on or off; I just use volume=-30). See the manpage for mplayer (i.e., man mplayer) for details -- you need to go waaaay down to the "AUDIO FILTERS" section to see the info I just posted about volume.
    Of course, if you want to do this by default every time you load up mplayer or gmplayer (or any other frontend), simply edit the config file as mentioned above (~/.mplayer/config) and put in af=volume=-30 or some other number.
    EDIT: After doing some more research and testing, it looks like mplayer does not use the software mixer by default (this means that the af=volume parameter does not work, or even if it does, the volume cannot be changed later on via the '9' and '0' keyboard hotkeys). To correct this, put in your config file: softvol=1 to make sure that both mplayer and gmplayer turn on the software mixer by default. Also, to change your volume percentage increments from the default 3% to 1% increments, put in volstep=1. So my complete config file looks like this:
    af=volume=-30 # use really low volume by default (only works if software mixer is turned on!!)
    softvol=1 # use software mixer by default
    volstep=1 # increment volume by 1% each step, instead of 3%
    Hmm, I should put this into the Arch wiki sometime in the future, as I feel that this is not documented very well on the internet so far. I'll get around to it sometime, if no one else does.
    Go Arch!
    EDIT: Hmm, I just noticed that if I play multiple songs on a playlist, that after each song gmplayer defaults back to the 90% or so volume level on the software mixer (the volume meter on the gui display). Does anyone know how to fix this?
    EDIT: I feel like I'm running the entire show here. The default volume/playlist "problem," if you google about it, is actually the way mplayer is supposed to behave. (See http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.vide … ocus=57789) Anyway, I found a workaround: use mplayer instead of gmplayer (i.e., use mplayer from the command line instead of gmplayer). This is what mplayer's manpage says about the "-af volume" parameter: "NOTE: This filter is not reentrant and can therefore only be enabled once for every audio stream." So when gmplayer plays files in a playlist, it just resets back to the 90% volume mark. HOWEVER, mplayer itself does not behave like this. If you load up a playlist in mplayer (via "mplayer -playlist playlist.txt"), mplayer will consistently use the volume setting specified in your config file as shown above!! So now that mplayer uses the software mixer's volume consistently (if you change the software volume with '9' or '0' hotkeys, mplayer will "reset" back to the volume level specified in your config file, and not back to the 90% level), you can then use the master sound volume (I use my function keys on my laptop) to tweak the volume for your listening session (e.g., headphones vs. laptop speakers).
    Too bad this only works on mplayer, and not gmplayer. Oh well.

    things run fine, however I am trying to set it up so anyone in the house can just go to gnome-mplayer and start playing a dvd from there. When I try to configure gnome-mplayer through Preferences in the menu, it doesn't stick. So I tried looking into configuring it through the file at $HOME/.mplayer/config and then trying to play the dvd through different gnome-mplayer options through the "Disc" menu, but it doesn't play. The man page is a little daunting and slightly confusing as well, for example I don't know what it's talking about when it mentions "gmplayer," also there is no "gui.conf" file anywhere by default as far as I can tell. The wiki page says nothing about gnome-mplayer which doesn't help either.
    Reading from the man page, if I had to take a guess I have to create a section
    [gnome-mplayer]
    and put the options for it under there. If I had to take futher guesses, all the options that say "Mplayer Only" on the man page won't work with a GUI such as gnome-mplayer? I need someone to point me in the right direction.

    So the preferences in gnome-mplayer live in RAM without being written to a file? See if there's some permission problem preventing it from making the preferences stick, because this sounds like a bug.
    Oh and gmplayer is a crappier GUI that used to come with the mplayer package. You can try it by recompiling with --enable-gui.

    Hi Brian,
    Thanks restoring and restarting didn't fix my problem - i have started it fresh and still it doesn't work. Basically I press ONCE on the remote, after the machine has not had any commands for 10 minutes, and the cursor skips from one end of the menu to the other - so I can't choose network or update software etc - I sometimes manage to stop it randomly in the middle of the menu if I press on a command in the middle of the cursor skipping all the menu steps...not sure what the problem is but I have basically not used my brand new apple tv since I bought it for that reason! I should call Apple support I suppose! grrrr hate wasting time with stuff like this!
    Thanks for your help though!

  • [SOLVED] Sound works at GDM but once logged in does not

    Arch has me stumped.
    When my Macbook boots to GDM there is the sound icon and sound works.
    Once I log in the sound icon disappears and there is no sound.
    If I log back out sound works again at the GDM login screen

    Solved my own problem....
    After a day of poking around and thinking about the error message I figured there is a socket is left open or being used somewhere  and pulseaudio does not know how to handle this. I found a socket file in /tmp/.esd-UID/socket that I rm'd.
    Rebooted my laptop and logged into my Gnome desktop and there is now sound.
    Furthermore I removed the line in /etc/pulse/default.pa that loads module-esound-protocol and have not ran in to any issues.

  • Sound dies in new flash.

    Ever since the upgrade to Flash 11, sound will randomly die while watching flash videos like Youtube or livestreams.  In Youtube's case the video itself will just stop playing until told to start again.  An uninstall and reinstall fixed nothing.  I'm on Windows 8 64-bit using Firefox.  Anything I can do?
    I've decided to go back to the last version until this is fixed, since the problem only exists with this version for me.

    Please add your vote. We're dying because of this issue.

  • (!apple video) with gnome-mplayer & gecko-mediaplayer

    I'm trying to watch these video lectures for my trig class. Can't get them to play. installed firefox 3 (branded) along with gecko-mediaplayer and gnome-mplayer. I'm running arch32 and am having the same problem in kde as I had in gnome. Not sure what the deal is since it appears to start playing but stops almost immediately. Firefox doesnt crash or anything, but the video window just opens gnome-mplayer and displays stopped in the status bar.
    Here is a link to the video

    BTW arch rocks.

    Yepp, this doesn't seem to work... If you try to download the file, it actually only downloads a file named mmlib_mov.asp, which contains the following test
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>quicktimemovie</title>
    </head>
    <body bgcolor="#000000" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">

    </embed>
    </body>
    </html>
    What a piece of bullcrap!

  • No sound in with a .mkv file with mplayer

    Im not getting any sound with a .mkv video that I have.. using mplayer..
    is there a codec I could install?

    I know this is codecs fault.. no codec to decode the sound, therefore no sound.. only with mkv files.
    Sound works with other files, such as avi, mpeg mp3..

    Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
    For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.
