Soundbooth CS4 MacBook Line In Recording Issue

I have looked through all the forums and not found a working solution to my problem.
After recent complete re-install of both OS X and my entire Adobe Suite, I am no longer able to record in SouthBooth using the Line In option.
It ALWAYS continues to record the built in microphone.
I have gone into the OS X Preferences and set Line In as Input Device and it detects and responds just fine.
In SoundBooth I open the Preferences and select the Line In option as well and designate it in the recording pop up window too. But still, it records the built in microphone.
It didn't do this before. Everything used to work properly. So I am curious if something went foul when installing SoundBooth and if I should re-install it? Or is there a known update / patch that addresses recording issues?
I'm running OS X 10.6.8 and SoundBooth CS4 2.0.1
Thanks for any help you all have!
Jeremy

try muting the built in mic.

  • Soundbooth CS4 will not record files

I am having an issue with Soundbooth CS4 not recording a file. I can open the record box and select my audio source (Alesis USB mixer in this case) but when I hit record nothing records. The record button does highlight however no audio is record or wave form shows.... Ive tested the setup (Alesis USB mixer into my MacBook Pro) with Audacity and it works fine, all settings are correct with the Soundcard and with OS X.. Ive been recording into Audacity, saving, then opening in Soundbooth to do processing. While this works, I would like to get my moneys worth out of Soundbooth and do all my recording, processing, and editing in the same app. I've attached a photo of the screen for you to review...
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hmm.  So when playback is fine but record just hangs, it's often a clocking issue.  Is this device one of the MultiMix systems?  If so, what version of OS X are you running and have you updated the drivers for the device?  I know there were some problems with Alesis support on OS X 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 and they released some updated drivers on their website to address the problems.  That would be my next recommendation.
If that fails, we may want to create a custom Aggregate Device with limited inputs to troubleshoot this.  You can do this by launching "Audio MIDI Setup" (located at /Applications/Utilities/) and chooseing "Aggregate Device Editor" from the menu.  Here you can create a new device and specify only a specific set of inputs and outputs from your Alesis, choosing which one you'd like to act as the Master Clock.  After this is created, select the new device in Soundbooth's Audio Preferences and see if you get different behavior.
We do have an Alesis MultiMix 8 around here, but it's currently locked in a coworker's office who's on vacation until Monday.

  • Soundbooth cs4/cs5 Error

Hi, i have been getting an error message whenever i try to change the audio default device to the system default device input/output. as of now it is on default input/output but i cannot hear a thing.... i use soundbooth RARELY the last time i used it was about 2 weeks ago and it was working great! today i tried using it again and this was when i discovered the issue. i get this error when i try changing the default audio:
once again i had never experienced this before till today. i have done the following to try to solve this problem:
    1) reinstalled CS4
    2) reinstalled soundbooth only
    3) googled and found this: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/461119?decorator=print&displayFullThread=true
the link i found seems to be the same problem only the solutions offered up there did not work for me.... i am running snow leopard and have been running it ever since it came out...i did not have the problem even then...why now?
i also tried what that user said to:
    1. First of all you must be connected as an administrator of the Mac.
    2. Then you have to open the preferences window for the audio hardware (Adobe->Preferences->Audio Hardware)
    3. Change the selection for Default Device (e.g. select System Default I/O)
    4. Now it should work
i got stuck on step 2 because i cannot find the audio hardware file/folder i do not have it....
    lastly i tried this : http://forums.adobe.com/thread/548571
once again i do not have those files ive searched on my macbook....
    someone help

I am having a sililar problem: Adobe Soundbooth CS4 on Macbook Pro Intel. I created a multitrack project, several aif files, several layers. Saved as an .asnd. Now double clicking it launches Soundbooth generates this error: "General error opening the file, or perhaps the file is of an unsupported version". I've tried copying and retitling the file, I've tried opening the program, then clicking <file> and <open> to open the file instead of just double-clicking on the file.
Now here's a kicker: I can open it in After Effects (no multiple layers, acts like a multitrack mixdown)
I can open it with The Unarchiver.app get all the sound files, including both edited and raw, lots of metadata files. Can import the sound files into Soundbooth but not the metadata (!?) so I'm not getting anything like a reconstruction of my original project - which I'd settle for.
I begin teaching a class that uses this software, among others, in January. I'm considering telling the kids to download Audacity and use that instead.

  • Soundbooth CS4 not picking up my isight camera

    Hi there,
I am using a Mac pro with a firewire isight camera, however, I can't seem to get the mic to wok within Soundbooth - Can anyone shed any light please?

    Hi Wayne,
Can you share with us what you've tried and what the issue is?  Does the iSight microphone not show up as a valid input device in Soundbooth?
Try the following steps and see if it resolves the problem:
    1. Open Applications > Utilities > Audio and MIDI Setup.  Try configuring the Default Input to your iSight microphone.  If it doesn't show up as an option here, then there may be some installation or driver issues.  If you do see it, set it as the default.
    2. Launch Soundbooth and click the red Record button.  In the dialog that pops up, you should see the iSight listed in the "Port" dropdown.  If not, you may need to select your default configuration in the "Device" dropdown.
    3. If this still fails, we can create a new device profile and try to force things.  In the Record dialog, click Settings...  This will launch Audio and MIDI Setup again.  Once it opens, in the menu bar click Audio > Open Aggregate Device Editor.  Click the + button to create a new entry, and name it something like "My iSight configuration."  In the "Structure" box, place a check next to your Built-in Output (or Line Output if you use that) and one next to your iSight microphone input.  Click Done and close out of the Audio Setup application.
    4.  Restart Soundbooth and bring up the Record dialog again.  Click in the "Device" dropdown and select your new "My iSight Configuration" option.  This should make the iSight the only available input port.  Try recording.
    Good luck!

  • Delayed playback in Soundbooth CS4

I'm using Soundbooth (CS4) on a Windows XP machine. Editing in single track mode is fine. I'm working on a large multitrack project with about 90 small files associated with the ASND file. Ultimatley, I'm creating a one hour radio documentary and I will be adding all my voice tracks to this mix.
When I press the space bar or click the "play" button I wait up to 5 seconds before playback actually begins. This happens even if I have just booted up my computer and I have no other applications running. I have shut down my automatic back-up to free up system resources, but the problem persists.
What should I try next? Is there some other/better way to build a large audio project?
    Thanks,
    Amy

_durin_-->I've read countless threads on this forum where your expertise in Soundbooth have helped innumerable frustrated Adobe patrons. You're a talented problem solver and I thank you for recommendations. However, those files don't exist on my computer--either visible or hidden. I've checked.
Here is how I solved my problem and regained the power of Premiere and Soundbooth CS4 for my MacBook Pro that recently had a new hard drive installed.
I went to the Apple store and inquired about some issues with permissions. The only option they could offer me was to run a Disk Utility unit on my new hard drive to check for conflicting permissions. After ten minutes of investigation, no conflicts found, and a restart I opened both Premiere and Soundbooth CS4. To my surprise I could import and playback audio and video just fine.
This was two days ago and I have yet to encounter the problem since then.
A success with a different solution to this persistent and troublesome problem.

  • Soundbooth CS4 audio to Captivate 4

I’m trying to create recordings in Soundbooth CS4 and import them into Captivate 4 and am unable to do so.  I realize that I can save the files as mp3’s (this import DOES work within Captivate), but that requires an extra step that really makes the process cumbersome, especially when dealing with a number files.
This is the first time I’m using Soundbooth with Captivate 4.  I’ve never had this problem using Audacity and Captivate 3.  I understand that Captivate 4 is supposed to import .wav’s, but I keep getting the “unable to decode and import” error.  I’ve scoured these forums for answers and tried the following to no avail:
    Soundbooth Settings
SOUNDMAX HD Soundcard in Windows XP Professional (service pack 3)
Recording at 44.1 kHz 16 bit MONO
    All metadata settings turned OFF
    Captivate Patches
I’ve installed the updates for Captivate CS4
I’ve downloaded and installed the NSAudio.dll and registered it by running “regsvr32 NSAudio.dll”.
Any further suggestions for remedying this problem will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

    Hi there
Have you tried exporting as WAV and reimporting? Perhaps a WAV would provide different or better results.
I do recall there was an issue that emerged with Captivate 4 (drawing from memory here) where there were audio issues. See if the link below helps.

  • Soundbooth CS4 Mac Crashes on Input Device

I'm running Soundbooth CS4 on Snow Leopard and can't seem to record anything. When I hit the record button and change my input setting to my line in microphone, Soundbooth crashes. It does the same thing when I try to change it under Audio Device preferences. It crashes regardless of the input device that I try and change it to. I've uninstalled and reinstalled but nothing seems to work. I've installed and uninstalled, updated. Otherwise the program works fine.
    Help?

While this bug was fixed prior to release for Windows, I'm surprised to see it on a Mac system.  It had to do with the Users or Documents folder being assigned to a drive or network path that was not accessible - the network was down or the drive was disconnected, for example.  Is your user account assigned to redirect the Documents path to a network or external drive?

  • Soundbooth CS4 only plays a short period

Soundbooth CS4 only plays about half a second of all files and then stops playing.
I have a 2.2 GHz macbook with 4 gb of ram.

Ok.  I checked the source code and that error and line references a failed attempt to load the audio device due to an incorrect device ID.  I suspect that upgrading to Snow Leopard changed some audio device information that Soundbooth is still trying to use from the original 10.5 installation.
So try the following steps and let's see if they help reset everything.
    1.  Open Finder, click on your username under "PLACES" then selection Library > Preferences > Adobe > Soundbooth and rename the "2.0" folder to 2.0Backup"  Launch Soundbooth.  This should force it to rebuild the preference files to their default state, and SHOULD reset any parameters to use any new values common to Snow Leopard.
    2.  If #1 fails, it may be time to uninstall and reinstall Soundbooth, making certain to enable any options on uninstall to remove all preferences.  I am always hesitant to recommend this since it feels defeated and I am only too well aware of how slow the CS4 installer is, but the error you've described indicates there's just some leftover information from the previous OS X install that Soundbooth isn't able to reconcile.
Please let me know your results and we can move on from there.  In the meantime, I'll write a bug and see if one of our devs might have any suggestions should the above attempts fail to make a difference.

  • Soundbooth CS4 "generic error"

    Hello all---
I've been using Soundbooth CS4 for several months with no issues at all, but during the last week or so, I've run into a problem---after running the program for a while, then saving my file, when I reopen the file later, a window pops up saying "OPEN FILE FAILURE": "The importer reported a generic error."
I am running Soundbooth CS4 on Windows XP Professional and using it to mix multitrack song files.  Each song consists of a group of invididual WAV files I imported into Soundbooth [bass, guitar, drums, vocals, etc.].  The number of indivudla WAV files varies from song to song, with one song having as many as 30 tracks [of varying length and detail].
So far, the "generic error" has happened to me on 2 separate song files.  Once it happens, the file appears to be dead---it won't let me reopen it.  I've tried copying and retitling the file, I've tried opening the program, then clicking <file> and <open> to open the file instead of just double-clicking on the file.
Any ideas?  Has this happened to anyone else?
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Playback problems in Soundbooth CS4 for Mac

I've seen this posted an number of times with a number of solutions. Trust me, I've tried everything that Adobe and, you, my fellow Adobe users have recommended.
My problem: the playback function in Soundbooth (and Premiere) plays for a second, then returns to the initial position.
    Recommendations I've tried:
    • Use the admin to set new permissions for the program.--> I'm the only person using my laptop, and the only admin. Didn't work.
    • Opened Soundbooth>Preferences...>Audio Hardware>Select I/O as default.-->Yes, I kept getting that error message too, and the same when I selected an input.
    • Your_HD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.audioAggregate... & whatever else.plist-->Neither of these files exist on my computer. I've looked everywhere including the contents of hidden files. Every XML document I opened in Textmate to see if they're coded for Soundbooth audio. Nothing!
    • Uninstalled/reinstalled-->That didn't work! Even ran a code to delete all my Norton anti-virus peripherals to ensure there wasn't a conflict during install.
The only catch: Last week Soundbooth and Premiere CS4 worked fine. Friday my HD crashed and I had it replaced through Apple Care Protection. I was completely up on all my downloads and software upgrades, including OS 10.6.3. which, like most of you, I've found major incompatibility issues too. Monday I did the reinstall of everything, and now these programs don't work.
I'm exhausted and looking for any new solutions because these programs are essential to what I specialize in.

  • Capture Noise Print (problem) - Soundbooth CS4

    Hello,
I am having a "Capture Noise Print" problem with Soundbooth CS4.
    I have 2 audio files:
File A (this is my noise print) I recorded a 4 minute file (.wav) of the ventilation system.
File B (this is the audio file that I want to improve: I want to remove the background noise of the ventilation system.
Q: How can I remove the background sound from File B using the noise print from File A?
I can only achieve this when both sounds are on the same file. Soundbooth CS4 doesn’t let me do this process when there are on separate audio files...(the box for "Capture Noise Print" is grey and cannot be selected)
    Thanks for your time.

I have the exact same problem... I do this..
    1.  Select 5 seconds of silence
    2.  Click Capture Noise Print
    3.  Select select a silent area
    4.  Click Noise..
    5.  Click "Preview".. whether On/Off buton is on/off, AND with Use Capture Noise Print selected, I hear no reduction.  Even at 100%/3dB
If I uncheck the "Use Captured Noise Print" option, then noise is removed, but I get the robotic voice
    CS5 latest updates.
    Any ideas?
    TIA
EDIT::  Interesting.. closing SB, then reopening seems to resolve the issue.  Every so often it does the same thing, so I have to close/reopen SB.

  • DLL files not supported on soundbooth CS4

Hi there, I use soundbooth CS4 and downloaded some plugins, After the plugins are downloaded i open the downloads folder on my computer there is the plugin and a read me file. i click on the plugin and soundbooth opens. but when its done loading i get a failure notice reading that the plugin i cliked witch is a DLL file is not supported. I tryed everything to get it to work but it seems that the DLL files wont work. please help:)

    Hi Andrew,
It definitely sounds as if the installation did not complete for Premiere and Soundbooth. My first recommendation would be to run the installer again, and let it reinstall PPro and Soundbooth. (Don't worry, you shouldn't need to run through the ENTIRE installation process again. I share your unspoken pain on how long that process can take.)
If that fails, we can continue troubleshooting, though I'd highly recommend calling Technical Support as they are much better at detecting installation issues than I am able to offer here. Both applications should work exceptionally well on your system.

  • Soundbooth CS4 filter to simulate phone calls?

    Hi Everyone-
I've Googled this and know there's quite a bit of interest but have yet to find a suitable answer -
Does anyone know of a filter or sequence of steps to make a pre-recorded sound file sound like it was recorded from a phone call using Soundbooth CS4? I have conversation previously recorded that needs to sound like it was a recorded phone call.
    Thanks in advance!
    Rich

... seek and ye shall find....
Open your sound file in Soundbooth CS4, Apple+A to select all, and in the Effects tab (Window>Effects), Mono Rack Preset drop down box, lo and behold, at almost the very bottom of the list is "Voice: Telelphone".
And it works perfectly with the opportunity to tweak to your hearts content. Just saved myself a bunch of time and created a new workflow for a project.... very cool indeed!

  • Soundbooth CS4 Problem with Quicktime MOV files

I know that Soundbooth CS4 should support Quicktime MOV files but I just get a placeholder image and the video doesn't play.  What should I do?  I don't know if it is an issue with Quicktime or with Soundbooth.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

It's probably an incompatible codec in the QT. If the audio isn't AC3 and on a separate track from the video this can happen. There are still a few applications out there that will write the audio into the video track, and QT will still play it that way.
Are you attempting to edit video with Soundbooth?
If you are it's not a good idea.
You really should be using Premiere or Efter Effects to edit video, and leave Soundbooth for audio work.
If you have QT Pro, try extracting the audio from the MOV and save THAT as an MOV of just the audio. SB should have no problem opening that/
