Soundmixer - easy sound mixing.

bored for five minutes and had an idea - package up all my sound configs, cause they might work for others. these configs provide sound mixing out of the box betwen alsa, oss and esd, using dmix. And it can't possibly get any easier than installing something with pacman.
Just makepkg, pacman -U, and relog. You may need to restart any daemons that use sound to ensure they get the aoss profile change.
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … =1&ID=7262
gives me working sound mixing in alsa and oss applications out of the box on my two computers.
tested using savage + alsa apps, and realplayer and alsa apps. I'm sure this same config has worked in the past with ET, which implies it should work with most games. Also includes esd support, so if an application is problematic with alsa or oss, it ought to work perfectly on esd which pipes it through to alsa.
aquila deus has been saying that dmix drops sound quality. With the default config, I did have some problems, was a bit choppy, though that was fixed with a slight increase in the buffer. I havnt noticed any delay due to the slightly larger buffer either, and no noticable quality problems. But different hardware and such, I can't guarantee results, and frankly, have no idea how well this will work for others - ALSA can be funny sometimes.
so lemme know how this goes for you.

and for most users, that's completely irrelevant. as long as its an inaudible drop -- it doesnt matter. if you're an audiophile, then you have different needs - dont push them on the majority, and if you do, you can make a package that sets everything up as simply as this does.
You could try it with onboard cards with headphones
There is a quite simple solution: ALSA should do mixing inside the kernel, rather than using extern lib which needs a lot of hacks to work (and certainly harder to code, how did they come up with the crazy idea in first place??), and does *normal* resampling and mixing just like jackd.
heh, I dont see any hacks to work in this setup. all alsa apps work sweet, and there's a workaround for older OSS apps which have yet to be converted.
alsa's not going away mate, its just growing stronger, so your complaints are falling on deaf ears. oss apps will be less and less, and in turn, oss2jack will be the one using crazy hacks.
and uh, alsa does do the mixing in the kernel, and jackd certainly doesnt. so... not sure where you got that from.

  • PLEASE HELP ME!!!! USTREAM PRODUCER and MY SOUND MIXER NOT WORKING TOGETHER

Currently I am using ustream producer. I have a sony video camera plugged into my Macbook Pro via firewire 800. I would like to be able to use my very nice sound mixer with my xlr headsets. The only problem I've run into is that in Ustream Producer I can't overlay the sound from my soundmixer over my camera feed.
Can Ustream Producer not recognize a sound mixer?????
I have already asked this question on the ustream forums and tried contacting ustream directly, but neither one has helped me out yet.
    I'm using a 13 inch MacBook Pro.
Please, someone help me out, this is getting very frustrating.

    Satellite A105-S4334
    These are your options.
    1. Obtain an installation CD for some version of Windows that handles the NTFS file system (NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7) and install it in parallel to a different folder on the same partition. See (for example) KB266465.
    2. Create a bootable CD with another OS and tools on it. See BartPE, Knoppix, UBCD4Win, and Ubuntu.
    3. Remove the hard drive and place it in an enclosure accessible from a desktop via USB.
For the last option, see the first few steps here.

  • How Can I export Sound Files for Sound mixing?

Can someone please explain me the process of exprting sound sound files for the Sound Mixer & Composer? How do I deliver it to them?

    Welcome to the forum.
First, what version of PrE are you using, and then, on what OS version?
In general (specifics can come, with the above info), one would Share/Publish+Share (or Export in older versions) the Timeline as an intermediate Audio-only file. That would be Imported, or Opened in the audio-editor program.
In PrE 11, or 12, one would go to Publish+Share, and then Computer. There, they would scroll down the list, to Audio. Note: the scroll bars are not easy to see, but easy to miss. Look to the far right of the Panel. With Audio selected, choose PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit. That will get you the best file to edit further with your DAW. When that editing is complete, use PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, then Import the resultant edited Audio file into the PrE Project, placing it on an empty Audio Track, say Audio 2, or 3. To maintain its position, I would place the CTI (Current Time Indicator) at exactly the point that you want that edited Audio file to be, perhaps at the start of the Timeline. Then, with Snap turned ON, the edited Audio file should snap to the CTI.
When it is in place, you can Delete the other Audio (that which you exported for additional editing), or just go to the Audio Mixer, and check Mute for any Tracks, that contain that original material.
Hope that helps, and if you can let us know a bit more, then someone can step you through any "gray areas," for your specific version.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to resolve audio sampling and bit rate differences before sound mix

I'm editing a project where an additional recorder (Zoom H4n) was used and synched to the camcorder track with Plural Eyes.  Some of the sampling and bit rates don't match within the Plural Eyes synchronized clips and I need to send this out for a sound mix.  Could I use Compressor to transcode the audio? Would I have to go back to my original separate tracks, transcode in Compressor and then re-synch using Plural Eyes?  Next time ProRes from the beginning -
but if there's an easier fix for my current problem it would be much appreciated.

Thanks Michael -- you've helped me with the project before (back in May of this year).
I started this project  as a newby back in 2010 and was a bit overwhelmed (i.e. just happy to get everything into FCP and be able to edit.)
I'll try the media manage solution, but if that doesn't work I think I'll live with the one-frame drift.  I'm assuming
the only other alternative would be to go back to all the original video and audio files; transcode using Compressor, and then re-synch with Plural Eyes and go back in to match up the edits?
Thanks to your continuing help, I should know how to set things up correctly from the get go for the next one!

  • Why does firefox not appear in realtek sound mixer?

    Hi,
I have recently had a virus on my laptop (windows security virus) on a relatively new dell laptop, however I believe I have managed to clear it using spybot and kaspersky. However the sound has disappeared from youtube & bbc etc, all trusted sites. The sound stopped working before I added Kaspersky. I use spotify and the sound works fine on this and so does windows media player therefore it seems only to be a problem with playing sound on the internet. Firefox doesn't appear in my realtek sound mixer and nor does internet explorer. All drivers are up to date, I have uninstalled firefox, I have disabled each plug in individually to see ifthere is a conflict and all sound levels in control panel are set normally (reset to factory default). I'm not sure what else to do; does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Innes

Do you see the plugin-container process in the sound mixer if you visit a website that plays sound (e.g. YouTube or MySpace) ?
Make sure that the correct sound device is selected.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Video+or+audio+does+not+play
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Video_or_audio_does_not_play
You can click the Volume icon on the Windows Taskbar near the clock and click the Mixer link at the bottom to open the mixer.<br />
You can adjust the volume level for each application in that window, so make sure that Firefox is not muted or set at a low level.<br />
You will only see the Firefox program in the Mixer if you are on a website that plays sound.<br />
Also check the volume setting for the plugin-container process.<br />

  • My sound mix does not sound the same after using Compressor for DVD

    Hi,
Is there something I can do to maintain the sound mix of my original file when converting to the dolby in Compressor. It needs to be louder overall and sometimes the music goes way too low and the dialogue goes to soft. Sound effects were louder and now get quiet during some parts.
    Help?
    Thanks!

    Hi:
You must do some changes in the standard AC3 preset from Compressor. Duplicate it, and chage the following settings:
    - Dialog Normalization: -31
    - Compression Preset: None
Save it and try it. You must get the same mix and level than your original.
    Hope that helps !

  • Surround Sound Mixing

I am editing a concert and using 4 tracks of audio. 2 tracks come from the live mixing board and 2 come from the mics on the camera. I mixed the 4 audio channels in FCP and it sounds beautiful in stereo. Now I want to make a surround sound mix. I took the mixed audio into Soundtrack Pro and used the surround sound mixer for each channel. Imported back in FCP, burned a DVD, took it home and listened last night and it sounded pretty good but the crowd applause was not loud enough.
I just need to know what the proper way to surround sound a concert would be. Should I do all my mixing in STP? Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Unlike film, there aren't too many rules when mixing 5.1 or surround in music. I would suggest you get a few concert DVDs or DVD-A or SAC-D music releases and listen to the many different approaches. Some are mostly stereo with ambience in the rear. Some are more what used to be called Quadraphonic, L,R,Ls,Rs, and some are more 5.1 like film with vocal in the C and selected music in L,R,Ls,Rs.
Since you only have stereo and ambience you probably gonna have to stick with the stereo front, ambience rear approach unless you use some upmixing technology. You could also use reverb and delays to create more of a rear channel.

  • Surround Sound Mix

I recently got a new computer, and I ported over my sound card, Audigy LS. I got the drivers "OK" and everything, it works. But I use ventrilo, and when I talk on my mic, it's all weird. B4 with the CD I was able to install something like a "Surround Sound Mixer" that had a bunch of different levels that I could change say the volume, or my input and what not, is there a way to download this by itself? Thx for any and all help!Message Edited by smp on 07-28-2005 09:42 PM

If you want to treat left and right separately, like the left channel of your first pair is NOT hard left, then you should make dual mono versions, and then you will get a panner for each, one for the left, and one for the right. But if you want them hard left and right, you can either use the surround panner and put the dot center-forward and center-rearward, or you can assign the tracks to go discreet to outs 1-2 for the front, and 3-4 for the rear. But one dot in the center full forward will give you full stereo in the front. I also use the Quadro setting in the panner, as opposed to the 5.1 with a center channel, assuming of course that there isn't a center channel.

  • SB Live!: No sound mixing.

Well I have finally got my SoundBlaster Live! working, but I have no sound mixing so I can here multiple sounds. In the past I used my onboard soundcard, and I used the little trick ind the wiki (http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … 0at%20once the dmix part) to play multiple sounds. Could it be the /etc/asound.conf file or the /etc/libao.conf file? Or both?

    Well here is the story:
I have always got this annoying message:
PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically. If this
** causes a device to stop working, it is probably because the
** driver failed to call pci_enable_device(). As a temporary
** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
** behavior. If this argument makes the device work again,
** please email the output of "lspci" to [email protected]
** so I can fix the driver.
So of course i e-mail Bjorn Helgaas, and he told me it just was a annoying message and my soundcard should work. And it did.
Here is "lspci" output (some of it):
01:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs: Unknown device 0007
I used "alsaconf" to configure my card and it worked just fine. Accept that i can't play multiple sounds.
The sound? Well the sound comes and goes, and comes and goes. It is a little bit hard to explain.
P.S. I hope that was enough infomation.

  • Outputting for sound mix

I have an hour doc projec that is going to an outside house for a sound mix. I'm exporting an OMF file from FCP 6.01 and they have asked for 30f handles. OK so far.M¥ question is since the audio is cut already and often times interview sound is cut into the needed bites all in the same track(s) do I need to checkerboard all the sound so each clip plays on its own track so that when I add the handles in the OMF output the time line doesn't suddenly expand because of all the added handles?

No need to checkerboard. The addition of handles will not play havoc on your timeline. The handles are there, but just like in your FCP timeline they are just available if the sound editor needs to adjust an edit, the clips still start and end at the times they do in your timeline.

  • How to Marry Video to Surround Sound Mix?

We're getting a surround sound mix from our post house and we have the choice of .AIFF, AC3, OMF, DAT. How can I take that mix and marry it to the video we have in order to make one MPEG 2 program stream file? And is Compressor the right app for it? Or should I use DVD Studio Pro? I'm reluctant to use DVDSP because we don't need .vob files, just a MPEG 2 video stream.

I have often "married" AIF audio files to MPEG 2 video using only the Quicktime Player App (Pro license needed, though). I take the separate output files from Compressor and open each in Quicktime Player.
Then Select All of the AIF file, copy, then click on the window for the MPEG 2 file and choose "Add to Selection & Scale" from the edit window, then save the MPEG 2 file. You can look at the movie properties of the MPEG2 file to verify that it now has an audio track. You should probably play it all through as well just to be sure it's not out of sync (I've never found that to be the case, though).
Ok, so here are the caveats:
Surround sound typically is an AC3 file and I don't think you can open those in Quicktime.
Even if you can, I think AC3 has a rule about being evenly divisible (or something like that) so it rounds up or down on the time. That could lead to sync problems. The advantage with AIF in using output from Compressor files is, assuming they were exported to the batch correctly, you know they'll be the same time length and thus syncable.
Finally, consider how you are distributing the file if not via DVD. Most people don't have MPEG 2 codecs with their Quicktime player. Even if the movie has a standard .mov extension, they will not be able to open MPEG2 movies with or without sound tracks. To make it playable for the masses you'll need to export the new movie using a more ubiquitous codec.
But, overall, the marriage of MPEG2 and an audio track is easily done as described, above.

  • Sound Mix for Short News Feature

Hi , I'm a news video editor and i would like to share my difficulties to make a proper sound mix under a very short time delay.
I usually mix three different sound source  , 1.  The press agencies videos 2. the journalist Voice Narration  3.optional Music and some sound effects.
The all need to be mixed to around -12db . I don't feel at ease using  the Dynamic as i don't know to use it properly.
Manytimes my mix is either with not enough sounds to make it lovely or with too loud music to make the voice narration easily understandable
does someone got agood plan to deal with a mix under a very short time ?
    any miracle plan ?
    Please share ..

Experimentation and experience are the best solutions, I think.
