Sounds are paused in OSX Mavericks, usually in Safari. App Nap?

Hi guys,
For the past time I have been noticing strange behavior on my MBPr (13", Late 2012, i5 2.5Ghz, 8GB RAM) running on 10.9.3 (Mavericks). It seems like sounds are being held back. It usually happens when sounds are played in a non-active tab in Safari (I don't use other browsers unless I need it for testing or when a site/webapp requires Chrome or Firefox, so I can't confirm any such behavior in other browsers). What happens, for example, is that I recieve messages on Facebook (which are displayed as notifications in OSX). Sometimes I recieve messages from multiple users. If I then switch tabs to Facebook a few minutes later, I hear the "new message" sound from Facebook multiple times in a row, once for each message recieved.
Another example is from a few weeks back. There is a website in the Netherlands called iBood (it's in other European countries too). Once in a while they have a so-called "iBood hunt". What happens is that they offer a single product at a time at a really attractive price (usually) but the products usually sell out within a minute. When a product sells out a new product is displayed. There is a third-party website that offers a auto-refresher (http://iboodhunt.1dagskoopjes.nl). Whenever a product sells out the website produces a *boink* sound, when a new product is available a *ding ding* bell sound is played. However, If I open the page during a hunt and switch to a different tab, all goes quiet. If I then switch back to the tab I get a flashflood of sound: *ding ding* *ding ding* *ding ding* *boink* boink*. This effectively destroys the purpose of the sounds which are supposed to alert me when a new product is placed so I can quickly look if the offer interests me, but I don't need to stare at the tab the whole time, allowing me to do other things in the mean time.
However, today I observed similar behaviour, except it wasn't in a closed tab. This morning I had sent an e-mail with Mail. A few hours later ( ! ) I plugged in my headphones to listen to some music. As soon as  I plugged in my headphones, with Mail running in the background but not open (CMD+W'ed), I all of a sudden heard the "finnished checking for mail" sound a couple of times in a row and then the "flying away airplane" sound you hear when you have sent an email.
I'm guessing that this behavior is being caused by some/one of the power saving features in Mavericks. I don't want to deactivate app nap for a whole bunch of apps on my computer just to not have lag in my sounds. I was wondering if more people have experienced such behavior and if they have found any fix?
Cheers

If you still have the original, correct spec RAM available, reinstall and retest.

  • After Update to OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 Apps are malfunctioning

    Hello,
I recently updated to OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 and i've been having difficulty.
The Following Native applications are not opening at all.
    Mac App Store
    Facetime
    Photo Booth
    Preview
    Terminal
    Quicktime Player
    Any Solutions?
    Will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. Never install crapware such as "CleanMyMac" or "Cocktail."
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • After OSX mavericks update my Finder app won't open !!

So after completng sucessfully the update for OSX mavericks I had an error on the Finder app (-600) wgich is now not allowing me to open the app and also my desktop files have also disappeared rom screen and I can only access these if I open in safe boot. Thanks for taking time to read.

Not knowing what you have tried, consider these two options:
One is a reload of Mavericks.
Two is to revert to your prior OS:

  • Why does my MacBook Pro OS X.9.1 Mavericks shadow and Safari.app Blocks It!?

Why does my Safari.app block the Dock!?

    Hello, PJCPace.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are some troubleshooting steps that I would try when experiencing this issue.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • What webcams are compatible with OSX Mavericks?

I've been saving and saving and saving to get a webcam compatible with my Mac - latest Mac Mini - and finally have enough extra money for it. (These things are expensive outside the US.)
Problem is, I've heard many webcams don't work with Mavericks (and I have latest update - 10.9.2).
What brands should I be looking at? I preferred Logitech, but I've been hearing bad things about their compatibility.

Any USB webcam that meets the UVC standard can work with your mini (provided your mini is using Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later.)    The seller or devices's documentation can confirm that a given camera is UVC-compliant.
Don't install any software that comes with the webcam.  All necessary software drivers have been part of every Mac OS X version after 10.4.8.  You will save money and may avoid possible software conflicts by not buying features and installing software you don't need.
If you want some specific suggestions from the many available brands and models, take a look at Mac Compatible Webcams.  For a low cost solution from a company that has supported Macs for a long time, consider iCubie.
The best solution for your compatibility concerns with your first webcam is to buy locally.  The retailer who sells you your mini is perhaps the best source for a compatible webcam.  Ask the retailer to demonstrate Mac mini compatibility with the webcam before you buy.  Not only will you be assured of compatibility, you can see the camera operate, know what image quality to expect, and discuss any questions you have so you can start using your new webcam as soon as you get it home and connected.

  • What alternate browsers are recommended for OSX-Mavericks?

I cannot read material from several important sites (ie, distance learning university) that are accessed with my web browser.  Currently, I have both Safari and Firefox installed. When I access my distance university site, the text is overlapped and unreadable as well as being unable to click on various subsections.  What other web browsers are available which might alleviate this issue?  I'm going crosseyed!
    Thanx

There is Omniweb,Opera, iCab, and others listed on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html
Note any website that does not work well in Safari and Firefox is likely not following http://www.w3.org/ conventions, and has not seen http://www.anybrowser.org/ for hints on accessibility or security.   If you are going to give them your personal information, make sure they work well with Safari and Firefox first.   Saying "it works with Internet Explorer" does not cut it in terms of security.

  • Launchpad installation frozen after installing OSX Mavericks. One small blue dot on progress bar?

Downoladed new OSX Mavericks . New Safari OK. Launchapd still shows dowlad in progress on OSX after hours??  Why wont it finish download?

I just had this same thing happen to me. My rMBP was kernel panicking, giving random error messages, freezing, and all sorts of other unrelated things. Took it to my local apple store (Authorized Service center, not Apple-owned) and after many tests passing, they couldn't figure it out. I told them that when I hit the bottom of the laptop a few times it would boot up. It hung on a gray screen for awhile, and hitting the bottom caused it to boot up immediately.
I then proceeded to tell the person that the SSD is likely loose. What did not make sense is that during the hardware tests the drive was recognized and passed with flying colors. Upon reboot, nowhere to be found. Long story short, the tech eventually decided to give an SSD reseat a try and what do you know- booted up the first time, no problems, no errors. Didn't cost me anything.
I also had other random things happen, such as WiFi needing disabled/enabled each time the computer woke from sleep or was turned on, graphical glitches, and so forth. Although none of those things are SSD related, they are fixed. Maybe the diags were what fixed those, not entirely sure. It appears to work as good as new. Now I don't need to do an OS reinstall. Yay.

  • What are the steps to change the name on the "House" in the side bar on OSX Mavericks?

What are the steps required to change the name on the "House" in the side bar for OSX Mavericks?

You want to change your username. First, make a backup of your files with Time Machine, as any error may damage your user.
Then, follow these steps to change your username > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428 Be very careful, as it requires to log in as root

  • I have had my mac-book pro for almost a year, and have just got OSX Mavericks, and now the sound on my laptop is working in a sporadic way, can I change this at all on system preferences or will I have to get it repaired?

On my mac-book pro the sound isnt working after I have installed OSX Mavericks, should I take it to be repaired, or can I do something on System Preferences?

In addition to checking system preferences/sound/output and selecting built in if that does not work, make sure volume is up and mute not checked.
You can try the following, Take a set of headphones and plug theim in and out several times (there is a micro switch that sometimes gets stuck)
Go to applications>utilities>Audio MIDI set up, see if you can select built in there, make sure volume is uo mute not checked.
    Try a NVRAM/PRAM reset:
Power off, power back on holding the following keys   OPTION + COMMAND + P + R
Continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times, then release, reboot

  • The steps to enable Java Webstart in OSX Mavericks are not working.

The steps located here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5559 are not re-enabling the Java Webstart for Java 6 in OSX Mavericks.  I have tried all four steps about 20 times and looked at all the settings in all my browsers (chrome, safari, and firefox) and all say "missing plugin" when I go to any website that requires Java -- in this case, the NY Times Crossword Puzzle's "solve with a friend", which is incompatible with Java 7 so upgrading does not help me.  I've tried searching for other answers and all keep directing me to the same four steps that have not worked.
A note, those steps worked when I had the same problem after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  Should something be altered for Mavericks?
    Please advise.

You'll possibly need to remove Oracle Java altogether before, see these notes on their WebSite:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml
After you remove it, go through the steps to re-enable Apple Java again; and, inside Safari, you can also go to its menu and choose "Reset Safari".
    Hope this helps.

  • I lost the sound after install osx maverick

help me please i dont know what to do...i just installed the osx maverick 10.9 and the sound gone..i check all and its ok...all i can hear is the "chan" at the beginning  ,the music plays ok but i cant hear on speakers headphones etc..its seem that some people had the same issue

Do you have a 2nd or 3rd Gen AppleTV on your network? Perhaps the output source was switched during the update. Go to System Preference--->Sound----->output

I have a macbook pro with OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and some keys randomly are not working. Specifically, the enter/return button, the "p", "0", ";", and all the function keys.  What's really weird is that happens randomly.  I've never spilled anything on it, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix this.  Can anyone help?  of course this happened after my warranty expired.

    **update**
I don't know if this will help someone but I am posting this for that purpose.  In the past when I first had this problem, I'd read a post somewhere (sorry, long ago, don't have the link) where an individual was having the same problem and they stated that when the MBP got heated, that's when the keys would stop working, and they went into the MBP and jiggle some stuff around (a specific wire, I'm not electronically inclined so I know NOT of what they spake!).  Well I didn't want to do that but it always stuck in the back of my mind.  I had given up, really, and was planning to take my MBP to the apple store.  But by chance one night I left my MBP on the floor where it's cool, and when I turned it on, the problem went - poof! It seems there was some validity to the post that spoke about heat, because my problems started when I would stream foreign dramas on my MBP for hours at night, and I would hear the fan going off all the time, and in the mornings, my "p", "enter", "0", ";", and all the function keys would stop working.
So, maybe try keeping the MBP in a cool place when it's off.  Since I've started doing this overnight every night (keeping it on the cool floor, out of reach of any big feet), I have not had a single problem with my keyboard.
    Hopefully this might help someone.

I have checked all my time settings and they are correct.

  • When songs are playing in itunes the sound keeps pausing and making little clicking noises. Any ideas?

When songs are playing in itunes the sound keeps pausing for brief moments and making little clicking noises. Any ideas how to fix this?

Error -36 is an I/O error, which could indicate a damaged Catalog file, corrupted bitmap or (even worse) a dying HD.
I would recommend to run Disk Utility and perform a 'Verify disk'.
If lots of errors are found, try to save as much files as possible to another disk.
Then perform a 'Repair disk'. Repairing a catalog file or bitmap might cause loss of files, that's why I recommend to verify first and save the files, before repairing.
