Sounds keeps unmuting after boot

This is on a 2.8Ghz MBP with 8GB RAM on 10.6.8:
Had to reinstall the OS because of an issue that caused Address Book to become corrupted.
Now that everything is re-installed the sound keeps UN-muting itself after a reboot.
I've done all the regular maintenance routines:
-  Ran all the Onyx maintenance and cleaning routines.
-  Manually did a permissions repair
-  Used DiskWarrior to repair directory
-  etc...
I also setup a TEST user account with admin permissions; the sound keeps unmuting itself in that account also.
I know it's not a hardware problem because this just started yesterday AFTER I reinstalled the OS.
Any suggestions - OTHER than doing a clean install or taking it to the Genius Bar?

I never found an answer to fix the sound driver issue but I did find a quick fix - which technically could be applied to several "this doesn't work right anymore" issues:
-  I first verified that no user or system preferences (that were searchable) were corrupted.
-  I used Carbon Copy Cloner to backup the entire drive (OS, apps... the whole enchilada).
-  I did a CLEAN install (drive wipe first) of Snow Leopard including all the relevant updates and made sure things all worked smoothly - including my sound card issue.  I made a temporary user account with admin permissions.
-  Using Migration Assistant I transferred all my data back over to the MBP.
-  Once I verified all was well with the transfer and things were still working properly I then deleted the temp user account.
Now the system is back to normal.  Total time:  About 1.5 hours.  That was a much faster option than taking it to the Genius Bar or doing a clean install of *everything*.
The only caveat here is that if you're having issues on your system that's being caused by an poorly designed application and you transfer it back to your newly installed OS you'll have whatever problem existed all over again.  For me I knew all my apps were stable (Adobe, Apple and several other third-party apps for video/audio editing) and they weren't the root of the problem.

  • Finder froze, restarted. Now keeps restarting after boot.

    Hi!
The title pretty says it all.
Finder froze completly, and I forced a restart. After the restart it keeps restarting AFTER boot. By that I mean after getting into the desktop.
    Any ideas?
Tried a few things my self, but it just keeps restarting..
Got a Mac mini, can the macbook somehow boot from that? I just need the data from the harddrive!

I could not find anything the direction I was going. OK, you can start from your DVD. What happens if you just click install? If you are able to install, then your would be installing Sno over Sno, as if doing an upgrade install, in an attempt to fix your Sno installation. In principle, your files, users, apps, and settings would not be affected. But,before trying this sort of install, you will need to resolve the issue of what sort of backup you have. Most importantly you may have important unbacked up files. If so, then you might be better off going to a data recovery specialist before trying to reinstall Sno over Sno.

  • Sound not working after booting

First of all, I have tried to uninstall and then install again the drivers of the sound card for W8.1
The sound does not work if I have switched off my laptop and then boot it. If I reboot it, the sound works. It's just when I have switched off it from Windows (maybe because W8 does not a complete switch off but a kind of hibernation).
In the audio mixer of the tray the green bar which shows when it's playing sound works like it's working and if I plug some headphones on the jack port they work like a charm,
Any idea of what's happening? I've just bought this laptop last week and I'm very happy with it apart from this thing

  • No sound in Windows after boot Camp install

New iMac 5K, have external speakers plugged in, here sound when windows starts, but then no more......control panel shows no issues???

    1. Does sound work normally with internal and external speakers on the OS X side?
    2. If there are no missing drivers, and the headphone outputs are being used, please ensure the digital output is off if using analog plugs. The built-in headphone is a combined analog/digital output (unless the Mac is from 2005-2006). Usually, it will show a red laser. in the headphone receptacle. Please see Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs - Apple Support.
    3. If you have HDMI or DP sound available, check if that works, even if the analog/optical is not working.

Are we supposed to guess what the error message is?

If the above doesn't work, force iPad into Recovery Mode.
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

  • P67A-GD65 : Boot sequence keeps changing after installing SSD

    Hi,
Before I had the SSD, all was fine and running on IDE.  After installing SSD and changing mode to AHCI, the boot sequence keeps changing after reboot.  I did not reset the CMOS after installing the SSD.  I had disabled all boot except for the SSD (which is connected to SATA Port 1).  And I did save by pressing F10 after changing the sequence in BIOS.
    Appreciate your advise.
    Thank you.

I have the same problem. The board decides to try and boot from some other device, even though the SSD is detected. Very annoying.
I'm using the sata cable that came with the board; e.g. brand new.

  • Dell Inspiron 7537 - Sound only works after resuming from suspend

    Hello,
So my sound does not work after boot, only once I resume from suspend. So, once I turn on my computer, and I load sound, nothing work (everything is unmuted in Alsa) - then if I suspend my computer and resume - the sound works every time.
I use Alsa and here is my amixer output (before and after suspend is the same) :
    eric@archlinux ~> amixer
    Simple mixer control 'Master',0
    Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
    Limits: Playback 0 - 65536

    Limits: Capture 0 - 65536
Front Left: Capture 11003 [17%] [on]
Front Right: Capture 11003 [17%] [on]
What gets rebooted when I do a suspend, but not when I reboot? Does not seem to make sense to me.
    Thanks.

Is there any additional information I can include to help figure this out?

I thought about resetting the nvram/pram, but before I do that, I wanted to check here. It might not be the issue. My startup looks fine and the sound is great up until the discrete moment when it's suddenly scrambled and nonsense.

I did try a safe boot once before, which didn't stop the occurrences. I can try it again to make sure, and see if the problem stops happening.
Never installed extra audio or plug-ins, though.
It happened just once not long after I bought the mid-2013 MBA, which I think came with 10.8.4, but I assumed the noise was because I was moving the computer around on a surface that created static, since the noise stopped after I picked it up off the surface. However, that must have just been a coincidence, because it happens more frequently now without moving or touching anything.
Trying the safe-mode boot and restart, and testing it out for day or so to see if it happens again.

  • Can't connect to the internet right after boot up

Hey guys, I have an interesting problem in which if I try to use internet right after boot up (via scripts) I can't resolve host names. However, if I try to use the internet right after boot up manually I can resolve host names. I had this problem with a script but I've since rewrote it to work around the problem; however I now seem to have this problem with openVPN and I need this to work. I'll use openVPN as my primary example but the situation was the same for my script.
Basically, openVPN starts up via systemd and it can't resolve my server's host name. Even 18 hours later. I have 'resolv-retry infinite' in my conf file which as I understand says 'if you can't resolve the host name keep trying to resolve it indefinitely'. I left my computer on overnight and openVPN still could not connect to my server, despite me being able to ping it, have MySQL get data dumps and replicate from it and other software being able to resolve the server's host name. If I restart openVPN, then it works! I rebooted the computer and let it try for a few minutes to connect and it couldn't. I restarted openVPN manually and it resolved the server's host name, 5 minutes after the computer booted up even though it couldn't connect on it's own the previous night.
Here's openVPN's status as of this post:

Anyone have any idea what could be going on? It seems to me that when a program starts up it takes a snap shot of the current network status and it then uses it, even if it's 10 minutes later and the network has been fully loaded/configured, the program uses that snap shot and can't connect to the DNS.

'Requires=network.target' wasn't in it so I added it but nothing's changed. I've left it in because openVPN does require network.
As I said, I had this problem with a script so I don't think it's anything specific to openVPN. I had a weird occurrence this morning however. When I started the computer up this morning  openVPN worked just fine. However when the computer rebooted openVPN couldn't resolve the host address again.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
      - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem. Maybe you installed a bad component or damaged something during the repair/replacement.
Apple will not help since you worked on the iPod yourself.

  • Fusion drive ssd gone missing after boot

    Hi all,
I have a DIY fusion drive on my iMac which was working fine since I installed it over a year ago. This morning I booted my Mac and it got stuck while loading the Finder. Another reboot did not help so I booted the recovery partition and ran "diskutil list" and "diskutil cs list". The output looks fine: two physical disks forming a logical disk. But several minutes after booting the same commands don't show the ssd physical disk anymore and the logical disk goes offline.
Does anyone know what the problem with my ssd could be? After reboot the ssd is always detected and it always disappears after several minutes.
    All suggestions are very welcome!

Sounds like the SSD has failed.

  • No battery after boot. Dell 7537

    Hi All,
I have this issue after installing arch (currently the only issue)
As it is a notebook, I would love to see my current levels of battery, right after boot, but I am unable to. The only way how to trigger the battery notification is to
    1.) hybernate
        OR
    2.) connect/disconnect the AC adapter.
And I would like to make it automatic.
Thank you, in advance, for any kind of clues.

Hi, I have the same laptop and had the same problem.
I have solved it by adding the following arguments to the kernel command line:
    acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor
Note: acpi_osi only did the trick, but then the backlight service fails. acpi_backlight fixes the service.

  • Keeps crashing after Yosemite install - Need thoughts on what to do...

My 2013 Macbook Air keeps crashing after Yosemite install, time between crashes are more random than consistent and it can be anytginh from one hour to 6 hours between crashes. Enclosed the report below with the hope that someone has some tips on what to do here.... I've formatted the computer, reinstalled the OS and checked the drive for errors and I've found nothing so far.
Would be very grateful for any thoughts/tips on what to do here...

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

My Mac OS Lion 10.7 FileVaulted HD does not boot, prohibitory sign, stop sign appears some minutes after boot starts. Disk Utility repair shows four error messages:
Unable to bootstrap transaction group 2517: inconsistent crosscheck
    No valid commit checkpoint found
The volume xxxxxxxxxxxxxx(here it shows physical volume number) was found corrupt and can not be repaired.
Problems were encountered during repair of the partition map
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
(the same with 2518, 2519 and 2520 transaction group)
I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck
    Terry
