Sounds on HP Pavilion go off randomly

I have a Pavilion dv6000 series and just suddenly began having a sound problem. The sound will come out of my speakers for about five to ten minutes then everything goes silent. The mixer still shows that everything's working well but there's no sound coming out of the speakers -- neither my internal speakers nor either set of external speakers that I have in different rooms of my home.
I called HP tech support and we went through a variety of checks -- reinstalling the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio HD2 device, checking to see if there were updates. We did disk restores and even went so far as to do a complete disk recovery. Nothing has worked. I can be watching a movie on Netflix, a video on Youtube or listening to music on iTunes and the same thing happens. It plays for a while and then goes silent.
If I restart the computer, it plays again. Then it goes silent. If I reinstall the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio HD2, it begins playing, but soon goes silent again.
There's no indication that it's silent -- the mixer show's it's working, etc. -- except for the fact that there are no sounds coming out of the speakers.
I'm at my wit's end. This started happening two days ago and I've spent hours on the phone with HP techs and nothing has worked. My job depends on hearing music and watching videos on my computer and I've lost a tremendous amount of time trying to figure this thing out. Has anybody heard of such a problem? Can anyone help me with this?

I just wanted to update my reply. My computer is now at the point that the sound doesn't work at all, so I started using my head phones while I tried to fix the issue. And now those don't work either. I've been trying to fix it with the HP customer service, they we're telling me that I needed to reload my windows and that it will take care of the issue. Well before I did this I wanted to back up my computer so that I didn't lose all the files on my computer. But it turns out that my backup software was messed up too! They told me that they would send me the software to fix the backup system, after giving me the run around about it for over a week. Now after telling me that the software wouldn't cost me anything and having emails that confirm it, they are trying to make me pay for it before they will send it to me! I will never, ever buy another HP computer, if for nothing else than for the horrible customer service!

Ive had this problem for a while. My moniter would shut off randomly when im using it butthe light on the back of the moniter is still on. When my moniter would shut off i would have to wait till it would come back. Im not sure if this a power brick problem or the moniter itself. I have also tried to put it in a diffrent outlet on my power strip. Please help.

  • FIOS SHUTS OFF RANDOMLY

Fios was installed no more than two days ago and it has been shutting off randomly.  Nearly every time it has happened I have been watching something on demand.  One time, I was watching something while I was also DVRing it, and it shut off again.  Sometimes I hear a definite click and the box appears to reboot, and other times, the image/sound just goes out.  I have unplugged/reset the TV and box (a new cisco box) multiple times to no avail.  Any suggestions?  I am at a loss and frankly, quite disappointed.

Is there anything sitting directly on the box? If the box gets too hot, it will reset itself to cool it down. It should have 2 inches on the top and sides for adequate ventilation.

  • N200 switches off randomly, during boot time and when moved.

    Hello everyone,
My 3000 N200 TYPE: 0769-AG2 laptop started to switch off randomly especially when booting, when I moved the machine (i.e.. from one desk to another) or when I pressed gently the bottom left side over the PCI slot.
The situation has gotten worse. I cannot use it anymore due to the frequency of the symptoms.
    Actions I have taken:
Operated with AC adapter with and without battery or battery alone.
Cleaned the fan and heat sink.
    Replaced the processor's thermal paste.
    Monitored the temperature using software.
Formatted the hard disk and reinstalled the preloaded Vista Windows.
    Reinstalled the BIOS driver.
Removed one of the RAM memories and swapped places.
    Removed the hard disk.
    Removed the optical disk drive.
Operated in Safe Mode with and without network support.
    Switched off the wifi button.
Excluded through BIOS the PCI LAN and IDE ODD from boot order. Also disabled internal Modem.
And finally, I contacted the UK support where they just suspected a motherboard problem.
None of the actions taken seem to solve the problem permanently. In some cases it worked for quite a while probably due to pure chance.
    Remarks:
My machine is out of warranty, yet it is in an excellent cosmetic condition. I only have it for home use. I have never dropped it, smacked it, spilt liquid on it or operated under any abnormal conditions such as on a blanket or a highly humid environment.
*Two of my friends that have the same model face the same exact problem.
*Hundreds of people on the web complain about the same problem with the particular product.
Could it be a motherboard problem? If yes, why did that happen to me and to two persons I know personally?
A motherboard replacement is very expensive relatively to the total value of the product. What could a feasible solution be?
Thank you for your time reading through my issue.

    intrasonik,
It sounds like you have taken great care of your system and approached the problem systematically.
I'm going to assume this is not a thermal issue since you have cleaned the fan (and verified it is running) along with replacing the thermal grease.  The randomness seems to suggest it is probably not thermal as well.
That the shutdowns may seem to be triggered by movement or pressure in a certain area of the system could suggest an issue with the contacts at the battery or AC, or a short in the system board.
Without doing a repair and some analysis, it would be hard to say with complete confidence.
I agree that the replacement systemboard through service could be perhaps somewhat expensive compared to the cost of new systems with 4 year newer technology.   You might consult the hardware maintenance manual on our support site
for part number and proceedure on replacing the system board.  You could search online for the best price by the FRU number and I would imagine, could find a reasonably priced board and swap it out.
The service training videos on this system are available here and may also be helpful to you.
    Best regards,
    Mark

  • My macbook shuts off randomly, how do I know what's causing this and prevent it from happening again?

My macbook shuts off and I kept a journal for it because mine's got complications.
    July 1, 2014 (Tuesday)
I spilled a cup of choclate milk on my keyboard, it was soaked! But my battery was drained so I know nothing had short out. So I turned it over and never tried to turn it on.
    July 2
I went to the nearest apple center and asked them to clean it for me. (I knew it wasn't a good idea to clean it myself) They put it in a plastic bag but I asked them to open it as soon as possible so I know what parts are affected. They told me they'd take a picture of the inside for me and go back after an hour. Milk was still inside everywhere so I asked them to take it in.
    July 8
I called to get an update on my mac and they said it wasn't economically practical to repair it because they recommended a full system replacement. I got depressed and accepted my Mac's fate. But what's annoying is I put my mac in on July 2 and they only tried to clean it in July 5 which makes me think that was the reason my mac was irreparable.
    July 9
I took my mac and tried to find another opinion but I showed the diagnostics from the apple store and they said they couldn't fix it. My parents were getting ready to buy a new one.
    July 13
I realized that my mac didn't have charge when milk spilled on it so I tried to charge it and BOOM IT OPENED. They keyboards were sticky and it takes a moment before my computer reacts to the trackpad but it works! Even all the keys works! But it doesn't charge.
After lunch, it was workingp perfectly and my batteries were at 30% charge! I was really happy!
(in the interval my mac works perfectly, it stays for normal 7 hours when battery is charged fully)
    However at July 19
There was no electricity for four days (A typhoon came in the Philippines) and my battery is about 7% so I went to the public market to get it charge while I wait for electricity. I charged it for about 3 hours and sideways because it was inside my backpack while it charged so noone will notice it. When I got home and opened my laptop, it shut off randomly after my desktop appeared after start up. So I was sad.
    July 20
I found a solution online to use the option-shift-power button my mac opened and worked normally!
    July 21
My computer was normal in the morning then in the afternoon it shut off again after I waked it up from sleep. Tried option-shift for about 3-5 times before it worked with varying intervals from 5-20 minutes each
    July 22
I get nervous when I use it but it worked perfectly I was even able to edit with Final-cut pro and HD clips.
    Wednesday
Worked perfectly in the morning but in the afternoon, after waking it up from sleep it won't turn on tried the option-shift then I tried resetting the SMC for about three times (my mac is a unibody) but it didn't turn on the whole evening.
    Today Thursday morning July 24
I tried to reset SMC first thing in the morning after the thing won't turn on. After about an hour, I tried to turn my mac on normally and it opened. So what I did is to back up all my files. (It took the whole afternoon) and at night I ran diagnostics (D during start up) and no threats were found
Haven't been experiencing the trouble, as of the moment I'm writing this Jul 25, Friday (12:13 AM) HK time Philippines.
So what I'm asking here is what do I do to make sure this doesn't occur anymore. I probably written a very detailed log. So what else (diagnostics and other) should I do to prevent this from happening again. School starts in August and I will need my laptop to work perfectly to let me go through college with less burden. Thank you and I hope you reply. Any more questions about details on my Mac will be answered

Get a new computer. Consider switching to regular milk, or even a light fruit juice.

  • My iPod shut off randomly and will no longer turn back on. I plugged it in to charge it, but after several hours it will not turn back on. What should I do?

My iPod turn off randomly. I plugged it in to the charger, and after several hours, it still will not turn on. I even plugged it into my computer and pulled up iTunes, where it showed up on the screen as plugged in, but still it will not turn back on. Any suggestions on what I should do?

    - First try resetting the iPOd:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Next try restoring the iPod via iTunes, first from backup and if still problem to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Wife's iPhone keeps shutting off randomly and does it even when on calls, restarts and has a dark line in center of the screen then the apple logo. At times it does it several times or won't power up, and the iPhone4 is only five months old. What do we do

Have an iPhone 4 that is now shutting off randomly including during calls. The iPhone is roughly about five months old. When the iPhone shuts down and tries to restart it usually take two or three times before it stays on, but when it does it sometimes has a dark line down the center and shuts off. Not very happy about the iPhone doing this. The store we had purchased the iPhone 4 from suggested that we contact Apple to see about a replacement, or send it away for service. As you can tell we are not happy at this point since the iPhone is crucial part of our day for work and family. What should we do at this point?

    Thanks for the suggestions!
Except I tried all those before I even made this topic lol, but thanks!
I Already popped out the Sim Card & let my phone sit without it for a few minutes then put it back in. Sometimes it will work again & it will say it recognizes the SIM Card but more times then not it still says it cant recognize it! So I have to take it out & reinsert it multiple times.
& I have done a complete restore 2 times & a back up restore 3 times. Nothing seems to be working.
I am planning on going to the Apple Store this week, wish me luck!
But keep the suggestions coming if you have any, I'd appreciate it!

  • Mac Pro keeps shutting off randomly

    Hey guys,
My Macbook Pro keeps shutting off randomly. Its been doing it for a few months now and I was finally able to restore it to factory settings to see if that would fix the problem but it hasnt. Sometimes it will shut off every five minutes, other times it will be maybe once an hour. I've noticed that it is more likely to shut off when I'm visiting youtube or watching a video/viewing a site with lots of pictures.
By "shutting off" I mean that the screen goes black and I have to hold down the power button until it completely turns off and then restart it.
When I turn my computer back on it sometimes has a reason for the problem, which I copied and pasted below:

    Kara436,
some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defect in their NVIDIA GPUs. Given the symptoms which you’d described, yours might have that defect also. Apple had a gratis servicing program for three years from the MacBook Pro’s date of purchase; they still offer the servicing, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend that you make an appointment at your nearest Apple store or Apple-authorized service center, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro, which will confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has the defect.

These computers have got a damaged NVIDIA graphic which may cause unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Fortunately, Apple is repairing these computers for free, so make a backup of your data and take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller

  • Did the most recent update and now my TB Display turns off randomly on both my air and mini. I running  TB Firmware Version:     23.6

did the most recent update and now my TB Display turns off randomly on both my air and mini. I running  TB Firmware Version:
    23.6

When did you get this firmware version?  My TBD is at 22.2 and the TBD bus is at 23.4.  I thought I had the latest firmware.

  • MBP frequently slows down and sounds like an aircraft taking off

I have the original MBP with the following: OS X 10.5.6, Processor: 2.16Ghz Intel Core Duo, Memory: 2GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, 120GB HD
I've recently started to notice that while running 2-3 applications my MBP's drive will frequently (happens about 4-5 times a day) start sounding like an aircraft taking off and some of the system resources jump up to around 100%.
What can I do to remedy this situation?

Take it to your nearest Apple Store so they can hear it for themselves. Or if you have AppleCare or your computer is still under warranty, call Apple. If you computer really is that loud, then the Apple techs should have no problem hearing your computer +taking off+ over the phone.
    Let Apple deal w/it.

  • My iPhone 4S keeps turning on and off randomly

I dropped my iPhone 4S in water two days ago, but I put it in rice almost immediately. It was working fine yesterday, but now it won't stop turning on and off randomly. Like it would stay on for maybe 1-5 minutes, but then the screen will turn weird and the display starts to fade and then power off. Then it will just power on again, but only if it is connected to the USB and is charging.
Can someone please help? I don't have apple care or insurance, or whatever, so will Apple fix my phone if I go to their store (I don't mind paying, of course)?

By taking it to a third party repair shop, you have voided the warranty if you had one still, and now apple will not touch your phone. You should take it back to the repair shop that messed up your phone and see if they can refix it. Or you will need to buy a new phone.

  • Sound display won't go off

My sound display will not go off. When I go to settings it will go off but always comes back on safari.

apple store pointed out the alert volume slider is not the same as the play user sound effects check box and you need to turn it down as well as unchecking the box.

  • Brand new Thunderbolt display shuts off randomly

I've had a new ThunderBolt Display for less than a month paired with a brand-new Mac Mini (2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000)
and the display just began shutting off randomly.
I also have an external HD drive daisy chained via the display's Thunderbolt port that stops working once the display dies. Tried connecting the Mac Mini alone with no hard drive figuring it might be the drive but no the display still randomly shuts off. Any ideas or suggestions before I call Applecare?

I have a similar setup and problem. My Thunderbolt display (refurb, purchased in February 2012) will randomly turn off, as if it went to sleep - but mouse/keyboard input does not wake it back up. The internal speakers will still output audio. Disconnecting/reconnecting the Thunderbolt cable from the attached Mac Mini (2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, OS X 10.7.5, AMD Radeon HD 6630M ) will not resolve the issue. Disconnecting/reconnecting the display's power cord and the Thunderbolt cable from the Mac Mini will resolve the issue temporarily. This began happening maybe a month or two ago, and has probably happened 10 times in the last 30 days. It is completely random, and I have yet to be able to duplicate it on demand.
Steps taken to attempt to fix the issue:
    Confirmed Energy Saver Settings
Confirmed Software up to date (OS 10.7.5)
Attempted Firmware Updates (message states not needed)
    Reset NVRAM
    Reset SMC (unplugging computer)

Since I'm still under warranty, I took my display to a Genius Bar today. The rep didn't really seem to want to hear about what I found on these discussion boards. He says you can pretty much find anything you want to find here, and since it is unmoderated it is not a reliable source of information. I let him know that the issue (as far as I can tell) occurs with different models of Mac Mini's, MB Pros & MB Airs, suggesting it is in fact an issue with the display and not what's connected to it. I added that most folks who reported bringing the displays in for service ultimately ended up with a replacement display, as the service done on the defective display proved to not resolve the issue - but I would of course defer to his judgement.
He decided that they would order and replace the LCD panel. He assured me they would keep the display powered on for 12-24 hours after the service to ensure the issue has been resolved. Truthfully, I am not optimistic. And for the amount it costs to replace the panel ($833.32 from the provided estimate), I speculate this course of action will end up being much more costly for them in the long run. But we shall see!
I will be sure to provide updates as they come.  Wish me luck!
