SoundTrack Pro 2.0.2 Beachballs on File/Open

I've recently upgraded a Mac Pro running Final Cut Studio HD from OS X 10.5 to 10.6.
All the software updates are installed and Final Cut Studio has been reinstalled. The only application still giving problems is SoundTrack Pro. It loads fine, but hit file/open and it just beachballs and stops responding. It's the same for a new user account or the existing users. Prefs file has been trashed, and there's no 3rd party plugins that I can find installed in the Library folders.
Any suggestions?

I was a bit confused by your opening post. In the title you said it freezes and in the body you said it crashed, which is different. If it was a crash (i.e. the program exits suddenly) then that makes things easier because there will be an error message. Go to /Applications/Utilities/Console to view the message.
I wonder if your issue is the same one I had when I first installed Logic:

Update: I tried reinstalling firefox, same thing happened again. When i stopped the process "plugin-container for firefox", i could use parts of firefox (didn't get an error sound) for a while, until the process "plugin-container" startet again.
so what am i to do? switch to chrome?

  • Logic shows aqua dialogs and beachballs on file- open

    Hey,
Hoping someone here has had this problem and might be able to help me. Today Logic Express (7.2.3) started displaying dialogs in the aqua theme, and beachballing (never recovering) when I try File->open.
I realise this sounds familiar to the issue here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301838
But my machine is an intel Mac Mini, not a PPC in the article. I tried the procedure in the article still, but no luck.
Other than that, I've been through most it seems:
    - Completely removing/reinstalling Logic by removing the application, application support folder and installation receipts.
    - Updating Pro App support to 4.0 (it already was at that version, but worth a try)
    - Completely removing/reinstalling Pro App support 4.0.
    - Launching Logic without CoreAudio enabled (holding control).
    - Launching Logic with just the built-in audio driver.
None of the above fixes the problem.
I also see the following line in console.log at the time the beachballing starts:
    2007-05-25 14:46:46.248 Logic Express[3422] * -[NSView requiredWidth]: selector not recognized [self = 0x1d60c400]
Which I suspect is a message sent to the supposed Pro App-looking dialog but not received well by the aqua dialog.
Anyone have a clue? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I use Logic 7.2.3 on a iBook G4 and have this issue. I don't think that it's Intel related. I have the same exact output in my console.log (including other Logic Setup Assistant errors):

It's not interface related. I use a M-Audio FW-410 with the latest 1.8.2 driver. I even tried the previous version driver to no avail. But I've also unplugged the interface entirely and rebooted with the same results.
I can get this problem to happen by simply starting Logic and clicking on the record enable button for track 1. Instead of turning red, it spins the rainbow wheel for 3 seconds and then tells me it has crashed.
The problem also happened when trying to Insert Audio into track 1. Seems like it could be related to the Open dialog -- or maybe its related to disk space. I only have 4G free on my hard drive. This should be plenty, but even if it weren't should Logic crash like this? I have 1.5G of RAM so I'm sure it's not that.
I'm going to try removing some files next. Anyone else have any other ideas???? Anyone??? Are there more than two people with this issue? I didn't do anything special at all to make this start happening other than keeping up with all the latest updates of everything.
I'm tempted to do a complete uninstall-reinstall-reupdate. But you tried this already didn't you? -pc

  • Acrobat XI Pro: Need to click twice on [File- Open]  to get the filebrowser

    Complete fresh install
Click on File->Open once:   get an empty filebrowser
Click on File->OPen twice:  filebrowser is visible.

Additional note to my 1st posting: after the Acrobat install, I rebooted.
Then I got this 'empty window'-thing.
Now, FWIW - I updated videodriver (can't believe it has something to do with it, there were other reasons

Rebooted and now it seems to be okay.
    A bit weird..
But timebeing it looks the issue has solved itself...

  • Soundtrack Pro Won't Refresh And Keeps Crashing!

    Hi,
Got a lot of issues with Soundtrack Pro, so much so that I've been using the basic Soundtrack version rather than the upgrade.
I'm using a G4 with FCP HD and the biggest problem I have with Soundtrack Pro is that it just keeps crashing!! I've also found that trying to use the Graphic Equalizer function crashes everything, from Sountrack Pro, Soundtrack, right through to Final Cut. Every other audio filter works fine in Final Cut, except for the EQ filter. But lots of functions inside Soundtrack Pro, crash it.
I can only use it for short clips and short periods of times . But the worst thing is, if I save a clip either from Final Cut or from Soundtrack Pro itself, the moment I try and open that new clip, it doesn't appear in the browser. I have to close the software down, open it and THEN it appears in the browser. I can't find anyway of refreshing the file list.
Strangely this 'saved files not appearing' problem also happens in DVDSP, as well as Soundtrack Pro, but it never happens in Final Cut HD. Any solutions?

"is there anything unusual about the location where you save these files? (on a network volume, or something)"
I don't think so, although my boot drive was formatted separately from my video drive, they are both internal. But it doesn't matter if I save the file on the video drive or the boot drive, STP won't see them until I shut the program down and reopen it again.

  • Getting Soundtrack Pro to record with M-Audio Firewire Solo?

I'm having trouble trying to record 'live' into Soundtrack Pro. I've got a mic into analog mixer into M-Audio Firewire Solo audio interface into ibook set up.
In STP, I can select firewire channels 1 to 2 (under "Recording" tab) for the input device but nothing is recording when I hit the record button. the mic>mixer bit is working fine. I'm quite certain the mixer>audio bit is working so I think its a problem with compatibility between the M-Audio Firewire Solo device and Soundtrack Pro software....although it shows up as an option in the select audio input/output settings in STP... I've also got the latest Tiger driver for the Firewire Solo device and the latest update for STP.
I CAN record from the in-built mic on the ibook so that bit works...
Currently, I've been recording individual tracks into Audacity then exporting them all as separate tracks into Soundtrack Pro for post production as AIFF files (drag and drop them into STP in the order I require). I'm doing this as a temporary measure until I can find out how to get M-Audio Firewire Solo talking to Soundtrack Pro.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Well, I got it working with Soundtrack Pro and Audio Hijack Pro in the end. It seems that only the front side of M-Audio FireWire Solo recording interface actually seems to work and only the right channel (mono). Its a little bit annoying but it works...not sure why the back ones did not work (s/pdif, balanced and unbalanced phone jacks plugs), perhaps its something to do with the fact that the front has gain level knobs and the back doesn't....hmm...maybe not enough power to drive the back connectors?
Anyway, if any of you happen to use M-Audio FireWire audio interfaces (analog to digital converter) and you face a similar problem, then its probably going to be a similar thing...

  • Soundtrack Pro won't load... flashes quick splash screen, then quits.

I have a question... about how to get Soundtrack Pro working again.
It worked fine before, but now when I try to load it up, the splash screen (the logo and company info) pops up REAL quick, so fast you can barely see it, and then the program just shuts down abruptly.
I tried removing preference files and reinstalling, then uninstalling with FCS Remover, then reinstalling. I also tried reinstalling all of Final Cut Studio, but didn't use FCS Remove to uninstall before doing so. Anything short of another complete uninstall/reinstall that I can try to fix this issue?
My machine: silver MacBook, 10.5.8, 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM. Plenty of hard drive space available. NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.
    Many thanks in advance.

Mine started doing this recently. I had STP 3.0.1 and FCS 7.0.2 installed on my Mac Pro running 10.6.3 (with all updates installed). I tried deleting the STP preferences and AU and effects caches. Still no go. Tried to restore it from my Time Machine backup but I only started using TM a week ago and that didn't help either.
    Here's the Console log:
4/20/10 12:10:14 PM Soundtrack Pro[457] Unable to load nib file: MainMenu, exiting
    4/20/10 12:10:14 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[132] ([0x0-0x36036].com.apple.soundtrackpro[457]) Exited with exit code: 1
I've got another copy of FCS/STP on another machine (MacBook Pro with 10.5.8), and it's running FCS 7.0 and STP 3.0. One odd thing I noticed is that the old STP application file is over 200MB and the new one is only 85MB . So I copied the old (3.0) app over the network and replaced my new one (3.0.1) with the old. Problem solved; it works now, but I hope I don't have serial number problems.
Apparently the upgrade to 7.0.2/3.0.1 has screwed things up. Good grief. And this is just off the Quicktime Export debacle of a couple weeks ago. What's wrong with Apple? I didn't used to have this many problems.

  • No Audio in Soundtrack Pro

I use a Mac Pro. When I send a FCP sequence or a video clip with audio to a soundtrack pro multitrack project, I cannot hear the audio when I play the project in STP. When I scrub, I CAN hear the audio. Also, while I'm in the same "FCP to Soundtrack Pro" project I cannot hear the loops that I may want in my FCP project. The meters are active, indicating the audio is there. However, when I open a new Soundtrack Pro project, either multitrack or audio file, I can hear all sounds. On another Mac Pro I use, this does not occur. Am I missing something in preferences?

Whoa, let's back up. Your description is a bit confused. Are you just saying that the audio file project you had open is no longer playing back? From where are you playing the audiofile project? Where is the multitrack project? How did you create both the multitrack and audiofile projects?

  • Soundtrack Pro Export Window unavailable

Just got soundtrack pro and am having trouble exporting files. The file/export option is unavailable (faded out) and I have no idea how to make it available. thanks

Nope. its just a single aiff file that I want to export as an mp3. I did try making a quick recording in a multitrack window, and was able to export that. I just can't export a single audio file.

  • Unexpected problem: uncaught exception when working with audio files in Soundtrack Pro

    Hey,
Whenever I double click an audio file in the timeline to work on it, I end up getting the Error message: "Unexpected problem: uncaught exception" and Soundtrack Pro eventually crashes.  Also, this happens when I try to work with audio files in the file editor.  I have Leopard and am using Logic Studio 8.  Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks
    Matt

Didnt know how to remove the original clip from the STP arrange window - or whatever it's called in STPro.  So I could go no further in my perverse science experiment.
It also appeared that I could only import an aif but not a wav?
I gave up on STPro and did what I needed to do in Logic, which I use regularly.
Thank you for folowing up on this.
PS.  I used to use an old PowerPC version (1.0.3) of STPro and loved the way it visually showed the change in the waveform when you added each efffect.  It appears that the new version (3.0.1) does not allow you to do this anymore?  You can render or flatten the effects to see the final waveform, but then you are dead in the water and cant make changes?
Im such a newbie at STPro that I am probably not using it right?

  • From FCP timeline...send to soundtrack pro audio file project is greyed out

The send to multi track is not greyed out but that's not what I need.
The stereo audio file is 48KHz and I have 7 tracks of audio in the sequence all of which are stereo except the VO track.
If I use "open in editor" to open a stereo file from the timeline soundtrack only imports one channel.
I'm trying to run these stero audio clips through STP using the waveform editor to quickly analyze and fix the "clicks and pops" also adding a low cut off filter to some of the clips to help eliminate some wind noise.
Seems the only way I can get it to work is to export each clip as an aiff file and then import it to STP, edit non destructively, save as a .stap file and then reimport that .stap file back into FCP........
Any ideas why the "send to STP audio file project" is greyed out? perhaps I have forgotten a preference setting somewhere?
    All help appreciated.
    Thanks,

Hey, Dave. That can happen if you captured your files with two audio tracks instead of a single stereo track. The two channels will show up on two tracks, but they're not actually stereo in the quicktime file.
When you captured, did you click the "OO" button next to the audio channels to link them to stereo? You can look at the contents of the quicktime file with Quicktime Player and see if you've got one audio track with two channels assigned to "left" and "right". If you have some other configuration in the file, check out these old threads for workarounds, or recapture if that's an option.

  • Soundtrack Pro making a LOT of files - used to working in Logic, need help

So I'm used to working with Logic Studio/7.2/etc, and it's my first foray into working with Soundtrack Pro at work. My questions are this: When I use the razorblade tool (since I can't find an equivalent to the split tool in logic) in soundtrack to cut up a sequence, it seems to be creating a LOT of extra files:
http://www.1217design.com/pics/stp_question.png is an example of what I mean. Is this supposed to happen? The recorded files themselves were done in FCP and sent to Soundtrack Pro via the Send to STP Multitrack session function.
What I'm trying to find out is: Is this supposed to be happening? How can I stop this from happening? Are all of these extra files necessary in order to export the final project? And what will happen if I delete them?
I just want to know because the folder is now 4.71gb for a 30 second audio file (the final aif export is roughly 30mb), and there's over 200 of these extra files that have been created in the process of working on this project.
If this is what is necessary to work in Final Cut then I won't be able to work with FCP due to size issues (which is a shame as I feel so much more comfortable working within that environment than I do working in FCP).
Thanks for the help in advance,
    Sean

    Sean A wrote:
By doing this, will it still create all of those extra files? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Is it just from the blade tool being used?
For all edits, yeah, baby, STP will generate more files than cows create methane.
First, I know what works for me, but I'm still learning, so I strongly encourage you to keep a COMPLETE BACKUP of all projects until you know your workflow. Also, you may have Preferences set up differently than I do, so you may not find the same paths as what I describe here.
When you have an audio file the way you want it, and you're confident that you won't need those edit files again (be SURE) Process > Flatten All Actions (or Audible Actions) and Save that audio file. Then -- as I understand it so far -- you can safely trash all the edits related to that file. (If you use Photoshop or similar visual programs, it's the same idea.)
During my first few weeks of intensive STP work, my drive grew more and more sluggish, for no reasons known to me. I saw disk space shrinking rapidly. Finally I figured it had to have something to do with STP, so I started searching and eventually I found my edits piling up in home/Documents/Soundtrack Pro Documents, especially (for me) in Edited Media. Since they all came from projects I'd finished and exported to AAC and MP3, I was comfortable trashing them all. Suddenly, whoa, I had an extra 12 GB of disk space available.
Just keep those edit files until you are CERTAIN that you know what you're doing and that you're DONE. Otherwise, when some project needs one precious little 3MB turn of a phrase, you may find yourself confronting suicidal or homicidal tendencies.
I welcome further clarification and/or correction from people who know more and can explain it better.
    Best,
    chuck

  • Export a file from Final Cut Pro for friend in Soundtrack Pro

I have a video artist who I am helping with audio. At first we just used an omf file that worked great, it's just a pain to get all the levels/automation reset. Is there an easy way to do this with Final Cut to Soundtrack Pro? Thanks a million

Final Cut Pro has an OMF export function: File > Export > Audio to OMF.
There is also: File > Export > For Soundtrack
and: File > Send To > Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project.

  • HT3659 My Soundtrack pro looses the mic on AJAKona.  It will appear as an input only after clicking on New audio file, then ok, Recording alert appears and then I have my AJA KONA3g back as an input option. loose it again if I change track

My Soundtrack pro looses the mic on AJAKona.  It will appear as an input only by clicking on New audio file, then ok,  and an Recording alert comes up.  But if I change track I loose the AJA again. How do I fix this?

Finally found the answer. The recording was done at 48, the audio/MIDI settings were set to 48, but the sampling setting on the export was not, causing everything else to break down. Once all three matched the export worked and the playback audio worked without opening the clip editing screen.
