Soundtrack Pro 2 - We need a patch!

Thinking about about that big FCPS2 upgrade? Wait a while. At least until they patch Soundtrack Pro 2.
The NAB presentation got me sooo stoked about STP2 (and FCPS2 in general) I couldn't WAIT to start rocking with it. fast-forward 2 months. I've now been using FCPS2 for a week (or trying to use) and I have the worst headache I've ever had. I've lost hour upon hour trying to get STP2 to behave properly and keep my work from getting hosed, but I've lost the battle. I give up. For now.
Thank god for Parallels Desktop and Sony Vegas. Not quite as elegant a "round-trip", but I'm getting work done.
Here is the nitty-gritty of my lovely STP2 experience so-far (my system: Mac Pro, 2x3hgz cores, 8gb ram, 1tb raid, 10.4.9):
Crashes:
This is a big deal. Out of the blue. No warning. Bam. there goes 15-30 min of work. Get it once a day
"Disk Limit" error:
SPT2 now seems to intermittently "choke" when trying to playback less than 4 audio tracks (see my system specs above). too... much... audio!
Master Mix Channel death:
Occasionally the Master Mix Channel will just die. No sound, No levels, No Nothing. Not muted, soloed, bypassed or anything. Just dies. No sound in STP2. Requires an application restart.
Limiter/Compressor do nothing:
These filters do absolutely nothing on my machine. Grated, this could be user error on my part. But under no circumstance can I get either of these filters to have an effect on my levels when applied to my master track.
"Offline Files" No export for you!:
For about 2-3 hours last week I wasn't able to export my unbalanced, clipped-out, oft-redone audio project. STP2 kept telling me there was an offline file. Nothing red on the timeline, nothing red in the bin. Where was this ofline file? Drove me nuts. finally found it by chance while I was zoomed in at the start of my project. Motion 2 had conveniently exported 2 frames of broken audio along with my 5 min video. Deleted the offending clips and I was able to export. But this is the STP2 board, I digress.
No dont get me wrong. I like FCSP, Im an ex-PC guy, I've drank the Kool-aid and Im not going back. But do yourself a favor, If you have deadlines, WAIT on your FCPS2 upgrade until they get some of these issues worked out. Trust me.

Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes! I ranted last week hoping for some insight. Looks like most are going through the same things.
I, however, seem to crash about every 10 minutes on average. Sometimes for seemingly looking at the screen funny. crash
At times, so crashed that I don't have the option of sending a report.
Other times, levels were rising and falling on playback as seen fit. Not much help for sweetening.
I have a new Mac Pro and new everything here so troubleshooting is extra fun. Somewhat glad to know it seems STP2 has a problem and not my setup.
Still wish I could mix here and not in my dusty and boring Pro Tools studio. STP had been taking care of business for me. All more the reason why it hurts so bad.
Looking forward to a fix,

  • Soundtrack pro help needed

I know this isnt the right section but I am not getting any response in the soundtrack pro section and was wondering if someone who used fcp could tell me the best way to knock out the back ground traffic noise in a tape, like they show you when they take out the boat noise and just have the vocals. Any help would be appreciated

If it is a steady sound of traffic such as a freeway -- so a white noise of sorts -- then you can probably get good results in STP. I just checked and the instructions for noise reduction are on page 168 in the STP user manual. It explains it better detail than I can. If you have horns honking or really sharp, vivid sounds then it will be impossible to do much.

  • Can you use soundtrack pro's loops in your youtube videos or do you need to purchase a license since it is royalty free?

Can you use soundtrack pro's loops in your youtube videos or do you need to purchase a license since it is royalty free?
I understand they are royalty free, I am just confused about using the actual loops for films, videos, etc - if there is a special license you must purchase or what?
Yes sure, it's a library and may be used a lot - but is it legal or against agreement?
And to clarify - what about music I create on the program , that is ok right?

If you purchased the software you have the right to use the loops that came with the software in the software to make whatever you want.

  • Soundtrack Pro making a LOT of files - used to working in Logic, need help

So I'm used to working with Logic Studio/7.2/etc, and it's my first foray into working with Soundtrack Pro at work. My questions are this: When I use the razorblade tool (since I can't find an equivalent to the split tool in logic) in soundtrack to cut up a sequence, it seems to be creating a LOT of extra files:
http://www.1217design.com/pics/stp_question.png is an example of what I mean. Is this supposed to happen? The recorded files themselves were done in FCP and sent to Soundtrack Pro via the Send to STP Multitrack session function.
What I'm trying to find out is: Is this supposed to be happening? How can I stop this from happening? Are all of these extra files necessary in order to export the final project? And what will happen if I delete them?
I just want to know because the folder is now 4.71gb for a 30 second audio file (the final aif export is roughly 30mb), and there's over 200 of these extra files that have been created in the process of working on this project.
If this is what is necessary to work in Final Cut then I won't be able to work with FCP due to size issues (which is a shame as I feel so much more comfortable working within that environment than I do working in FCP).
Thanks for the help in advance,
    Sean

By doing this, will it still create all of those extra files? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Is it just from the blade tool being used?
For all edits, yeah, baby, STP will generate more files than cows create methane.
First, I know what works for me, but I'm still learning, so I strongly encourage you to keep a COMPLETE BACKUP of all projects until you know your workflow. Also, you may have Preferences set up differently than I do, so you may not find the same paths as what I describe here.
When you have an audio file the way you want it, and you're confident that you won't need those edit files again (be SURE) Process > Flatten All Actions (or Audible Actions) and Save that audio file. Then -- as I understand it so far -- you can safely trash all the edits related to that file. (If you use Photoshop or similar visual programs, it's the same idea.)
During my first few weeks of intensive STP work, my drive grew more and more sluggish, for no reasons known to me. I saw disk space shrinking rapidly. Finally I figured it had to have something to do with STP, so I started searching and eventually I found my edits piling up in home/Documents/Soundtrack Pro Documents, especially (for me) in Edited Media. Since they all came from projects I'd finished and exported to AAC and MP3, I was comfortable trashing them all. Suddenly, whoa, I had an extra 12 GB of disk space available.
Just keep those edit files until you are CERTAIN that you know what you're doing and that you're DONE. Otherwise, when some project needs one precious little 3MB turn of a phrase, you may find yourself confronting suicidal or homicidal tendencies.
I welcome further clarification and/or correction from people who know more and can explain it better.
    Best,

  • Completely new to Soundtrack Pro - need help for school project

I've never used Soundtrack Pro before, but I need to record and modify some dialogue for a project for one of my classes, and I think that's the only audio program we have on the computers in the lab I'm using.
Can I use Soundtrack Pro to record myself reading lines of dialogue? And then modify the audio tracks? I don't want the characters in my project to sound like me, I want them more high-pitched and cartoonish, like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, yeah you can select your audio and using the *Process menu* choose eitherr the +Pitch>Pitch Shifter II+ or the +Mac OS > Pitch+ plug in to shift the pitch. I think Pitch may be better for what you want.
You can also look under the *Process menu* and find +Time Stretch+ which you can use to speed up your audio if desired.

  • Need Soundtrack Pro or equivalent as standalone app. (not bundled with FCS)

I do in-house editing of seminar videos for a small organization. The bottleneck is cleaning up the audio tracks of oral clicks and other vocal noises we don't want in the video. It would greatly speed up the process if we could have 2 people working simultaneously on the audio tracks.
I'd be happy to purchase another copy of Soundtrack Pro to do this. But I can't justify $1299 to get it as part of the Final Cut Studio bundle because I don't need a 2nd copy of all the other applications. I have not found any other audio editing application that has the features I use all the time in Soundtrack Pro: Set Ambient Noise Print/Replace with Ambient Noise.
Does anyone know of another application that does this? I also need the app. to include an equivalent to the pencil tool to clean up clicks. (hopefully for less than $300).

What keeps you from crossgrading if you've got other FCS apps?
Here's another option. Get Apple Motion used. Then crossgrade to FCS for 200[total it's a freakin deal]! Where there's a will there's always a way...Hey.

  • Have Logic/Peak 5 - Do I need Soundtrack Pro?

I recently did an erase & install of my system and have been slowly putting everything back together. A few years ago, before buying Logic Express (and ultimately Logic Pro), I had purchased Soundtrack because it seemed useful. Shortly after that, I took advantage of a great deal to update my copy of Peak LE to Peak 4 (and subsequently Peak 5). When Apple offered the upgrade path from Soundtrack to Soundtrack Pro, I took advantage of that (is it any wonder I'm in debt?!).
Well, I realized that between using Logic Pro and Peak, I never used Soundtrack Pro even though I had installed it. As I'm re-installing my computer software, I'm wondering if I should even bother installing Soundtrack Pro. Can anyone see any benefit? I'm doing some composing to picture, but so far Logic's been able to handle that fine. 'Mastering' and converting vinyl work smoothly in Peak. Should I bother with Soundtrack Pro?
If not, I'm thinking I should just sell it on ebay or something, but I'm not real sure of how that works for software. According to the Apple Software License Agreement, "You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party..." Does that mean I need to contact Apple when the sale happens (or before, or after)? Anyone have experience with this sort of thing?
Thanks a lot for any thoughts....

Thanks everyone! Mike, after marking the other responses as 'Helpful' I was going to do the same for yours, but the option wasn't there (only 'Solved' which I'm not quite at yet....). I can totally see the usefulness of Soundtrack, I just want to run a lean machine free from any stuff I won't truly be needing considering what I've already got.
Okay, so I think I'll take my chances with selling it on ebay. I'll actually include both the original Soundtrack box and the Soundtrack Pro box, just to make sure everything's all clear.
Now, what kinds of steps do I need to take to officially transfer my Soundtrack license(s) to a potential buyer? I don't want there to be any confusion for someone that might purchase it, or any screwiness going on with my Apple registration account.
    Thanks!

  • Do I need Soundtrack Pro, Motion 2, and DVD Studio Pro 4?

Do I need Soundtrack Pro, Motion 2, and DVD Studio Pro 4 to learn Final Cut Pro, or can I use the basic package and upgrade later?

can I use the basic package and upgrade later?<<</div>
What "basic package" are you referring to? FCP is only available as part of Final Cut Studio, which includes ALL of the apps you mention ... unless, of course, you purchase a used copy of FCP alone.

  • Is Soundtrack Pro Too Much For My Needs?

I'm looking for a piece of software that will do basic things. I'd like to edit EXISTING audio tracks (mp3's). I don't need to create anything. In short, I'd like a program that will allow me to create my "mash-ups" of songs. Using the waveforms to cut portions of songs looping them or moving them around. And changing the BPM's is very important for mixing the songs together. Making a 98 BPM track 101 BPM's, preferebly with pitch adjusting as well. I used Cubase SE for this but there is no version for my Intel Mac Pro and I also just think that software wasn't really meant for that. Is Soundtrack Pro not what I'm looking for? And if not, can you recommend something?
    THANKS!

I've played with a few programs and was wondering if there are any that allow visual time stretching. Something like dragging the waveform so the peaks (beats) line up with the track just above it. I think this would be easier then the methods I've seen. It took me numerous times to get the beats matched by changing the tempo/pitch a percentage and it still ends up off by the end of the song. I don't know what percentage I should be changing a track who's BPM is 98 to match one thats 101. Plus many of my tracks BPM's have been tagged by the "tapping" method so I don't even know how accurate that is. I just think it would be easier to drag the waveform and line up the peaks. Is this possible in any software you've seen?

  • After every single reboot, I need to reauthorise Soundtrack Pro?

    Hey all
Odd one here, every time I want to run Soundtrack Pro I have to re-enter my serial AND insert my old XS Key until it's in.  Here is the strange part. Logic Pro is not showing this problem, only Soundtrack Pro.
I have trashed the Sountrack Pro prefs, I have repaired permissions, and I have already also tried deleting the Logic System ID from the Library ProApps folder..
Anyone else ever get this? its pretty infuriating..

I should add that if my old XS Key is connected, this does not occur.  But I have never constantly needed this key.  Its a legacy thing!

  • Have Added Soundtrack Pro Loops. Now Need To Delete Greyed Out Duplicates?

As you know, only half the loops come on the DVD and the rest have to be downloaded.
The downloadable loops appear greyed out in the Loops Browser until you download them.
I have added my Soundtrack Pro loops to the Loops Browser so now every downloadable loop is duplicated.
One is playable (the STP one) whilst the other is greyed out.
Is there any way of deleting the greyed out names?

  • URGENT-  I need help: Soundtrack Pro Freezing Problem!!

I just sent my FCP project to a multitrack project in Soundtrack Pro, but when i want to work on the Soundtrack Pro project, everything keeps freezing. its dead slow!
i can barely do anything with it!
whats the problem? and how can i solve it?

Couple of possibilities. One, your media files are huge. STP reference the entire media of a clip edited in FCP . . . not just the edited portion. That can result in some large files being brought over. Also, when you send a clip over, use the base layer option if you can, or export an mp4 to bring in to STP.
If you're ready to do the post audio work on a finished FCP project, export an omf file. Close FCP, then open the omf file in STP. That can help.
Other "obvious" but still good to review considerations . . . have enough RAM? Is there enough disk space? Are you using a different media drive than where the system is located?

  • Repost from soundtrack pro forum: advice needed on how to master a dj mix.

i posted the info below on the soundtrack pro forum and someone suggested i use waveburner to master my dj mix after it's been recorded:
when i record a mix in soundtrack pro, it's 1 long song. sometimes certain parts of the mix come in at a lower volume than other parts because some records or songs aren't as loud as the previous song that it was mixed out of.
how can i bring up the volume on the lower parts and make them equally as loud as the other songs? or, how do i level out the volume without making the mix sound worse?
any advice on getting the EQs and other settings right would be appreciated.
if anything's not clear, please let me know.

  • Final Cut Pro Soundtrack Pro - Project linking issue

    hi hello there,
I've completed an edit in final cut. I click on the project and send it to soundtrack pro (multi track project)
I follow the instructions (send with baseline video ref)
Final Cut works it's magic and up pops Soundtrack Pro with the sequenced timeline and the video ref.
I make all my changes and save.
Flip back to final cut and nothing.
    nothing!
No updated audio. no additional timelines. just the same project file i started with in Final Cut.
So now i have to export a self contained edit of the audio and import it to Final Cut to get the job out on time.
No ideal as i've got to make changes to the cut.
    Any ideas?
I'd really appreciate it if anyone knows and can let me know.
I had the same problem with Colour. Did the corrections. sent back to Final Cut and nothing. That was for a previous job which ended up going really tits up because of it. I've not used Colour since.
    any ideas?
    thank you thank you

Sounds to me like you need to perform a clean install... i.e. erase and install of OS, and reinstall it all from the ground up.
If you've not done this (especially when you upgraded to Leopard) it's time.
