Soundtrack Pro course in Ireland

Apple Certified Pro soundtrack pro course confirmed for June in Filmbase, Temple Bar
http://filmbase.ie/training/final_cut.php

You MIGHT be able to route audio from LE to Soundtrack Pro using something like Soundflower or JackOSX, use the SP plugs on those inputs, and then route the audio back to LE, again using JackOSX or Soundflower.
There will be some latency involved in this, which LE should compensate for. If not, you can use the LatencyFixer plugin from Expert Sleepers (http://www.collective.co.uk/expertsleepers/latencyfixer.html).
Anyway, this is a little convoluted, but it could work.

  • Amplitude increase when using Soundtrack Pro as external editor

I am finding that when I use Soundtrack Pro as an external sample editor from within Logic, the subsequent audio in STP is louder by about 7-8dB, and so often clips. The audio region plays normally within the Logic sample editor and if I open it with STP, not going via Logic, it plays normally as well.
Am I missing something about the 'use external editor' command, or is this a bug?

I'm glad to hear I'm not making a trivial error - unless we both are of course . Another bug seems to be that the waveform disappears at odd times.
I think I will persist with STP as it covers some ground better than Logic, though it is a bit thin to be properly regarded as a 'Pro' app in its own right. It definitely rests on the coat-tails of FCP.
matrixx, what do you use as an external editor instead, if anything?

  • 5.1 output from Soundtrack Pro?

I have FCP Studio 2, and would like to get into 5.1 mixing in Soundtrack Pro. I know you need some sort of intermediary device to output through, but if anyone could give me some specifics that'd be great. I've seen "M-Audio 410 interface" pop up in other threads, and was wondering if the Griffin Firewave is comparable (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/firewave/).
On a side note, I do have a Sony amplifier that is capable of 6.1 surround.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  • Record Logic + all input live in SoundTrack pro (or other?)

    Hi All,
I would like to record (into soundtrack pro) live sessions using logic and some inputs from the sound card.
So of course the best way to do this would be to record all into logic and bounce the file but my live sessions are based on a cycle of various tracks set with certain sounds and/or drum paterns which I use to play live with.
On top of that I have various inputs for other instruments and mics for vocals which are played from in Logic tracks, ending up with everything coming out of my logic output.
To record these live sessions I have opened up SoundTrack pro and tried to record from various output but all I can get is the inputs (mics etc) without the Logic tracks.
I have also tried Soundflower but it gave me a piercing noise when I enabled the inputs in Logic...
Would anyone have any other idea to share please?
    Thx

    sounds like a feedback loop.
Anyway, you can try Wiretap Pro, Wiretap Studio, and a few others, the names of which I don't recall at the moment (still on first cup of coffee). You can route and isolate the audio i/o around the machine.

  • Why Do The Latest Versions Of Soundtrack and Soundtrack Pro Use .caf Files?

About 3 years ago Soundtrack and Soundtrack Pro started using .caf files instead of .aif ones.
The .caf files appear to take up more space than .aif and of course need rendering before they can be used in FCE/FCP.
So what is the logic behind their use?
I would add that I have skimmed through several articles which claim they have advantages ..... which I can't understand.
I only know that when used normally in FCE/FCP they seem to me a backward step, requiring rendering - almost like using .mp3 but without the space-saving features.

    Here's a link from Apple:
    http://developer.apple.com/DOCUMENTATION/MusicAudio/Reference/CAFSpec/CAFoverview/CAFoverview.html
It touts "unrestricted file size" as one advantage of CAFs. Has any of us ever exceeded the supposed 4GB limit of AIF files?? This is from the page linked above:
"Whereas AIFF, AIFF-C, and WAV files are limited in size to 4 gigabytes, which might represent as little as 15 minutes of audio, CAF files use 64-bit file offsets, eliminating practical limits. A standard CAF file can hold audio data with a playback duration of hundreds of years."

  • Import 5.1 stems into Soundtrack Pro

I have 50 pieces of audio that are all saved as 5.1 stems with appropriate file names (.L.wav, .R.wav, .C.wav, etc.). I need to import them as multichannel files, edit and export as 5.1 stems again.
Editing and exporting are no problem. I can import my 5.1 stems into a new multichannel audio file, the probelm is, Soundtrack Pro automatically assigns them in the wrong order. They are importing in the order they are listed in the file broswer: C, L, Lf, Ls, R, Rs. Alphabetically ordered. They should be importing as L, R, C, Lf, Ls, Rs because in the Soundtrack Pro manual it states that the program 'uses the SMPTE/ITU standard for routing output channels.' This doesn't seem to be the case for importing however.
    Am I missing something here?
This makes working in Soundtrack impossible. Not only are they assigned in the wrong order, but the original source name is gone in the new multichannel audio file. So, reordering the tracks in the multichannel file will inevitably result in mistakes as I will have to manually drag numbered channels into a new order for every one of these clips.
Is there anyway to get Soundtrack Pro to import the stems in the correct order?

  • Pioneer & Soundtrack Pro 3

hey all. im trying to record audio with my Pioneer DM DV-5 mic, but audio Level is always no higher than about -50. in SysPrefs and in ST Pro Input Volume is on the maximum. so whats wrong?!

Thanks. That explains a lot, especially why reinstallation of STP fails in Mountain Lion.
I have STP stil around, but I am afraid that in the cleaning up with FCSRemover (asked to keep STP and DVDSP though) for the installation of FCPX something critical got lost. Trying to run STP crashes with a Dyld Error Message:
    Library not loaded: /Library/Application Support/ProApps/*/ProFX.framework/Versions/A/ProFX
      Referenced from: /Applications/Final Cut Studio/Soundtrack Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/Soundtrack Pro

Is it possible to retrieve (wherefrom) and reinstall this library? In such a way that FCPX is not harmed, of course.

  • Nothing will save in Soundtrack Pro

Hallo.  using fcp 7, Stp 3.0.1
Did the normal things 'send to' stp from fcp ... did the simple noise reductions, hit Save, and "The document 'xxx.stap' could not be saved.
I've 'saved as' I've used different names for the file, I'm just trying to save in the most basic way possible, and it's not doing it.
I also tried putting the original .stap file in the trash and then saving, and that won't save either, and then of course my fcp sequence has no audio.
Not trying to do the entire film, just one clip.
I'm pretty frustrated.  so close to being done, and ye-olde 'save' function in Soundtrack Pro will.  not.  work.
    any help out there?
    thanks.

You realize that you can save your noise reduction as a preset and  try just quitting and starting over?  Have you tried doing a save as to a different drive?

  • FCP and Soundtrack Pro music licensing and music cue sheet procedures

Okay, so we made the movie, and we marketed it and it has been sold in several geographic territories. Now I have to make up a music cue sheet. What do I put on the cue sheet for Apple Loops and FCP and Soundtrack Pro files that I have used for music? I believe they are royalty free, which is great. But I'm supposed to identify the music cues with writer, publisher, and society (ASCAP, BMI, etc.) What does an entry for those resources look like? It's really hard to find this info in the documentation for FCP and SP. Thanks.
    G5 Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Interesting question - We don't use attorneys - too expensive, and we never listen to 'em anyway, so the info didn't come from a lawyer, ha ha. But I've seen several examples of music cue sheets, and they all contain the same information, including composer, publisher, society, timing, etc. (After all, that's the purpose of the cue sheet - to see that the artists and producers get paid for their work). You can find one format at:
    www.ascap.com/musicbiz/cuesheetcorner/pdf/SampleCue
Of course, if the example comes from ASCAP (as that one does) or another society (BMI, others), they are working to make their job easier, but they are the societies - they are the ones who can object if they don't like it. And they have substantial power to penalize a producer for not doing what they want. But here's the thing: there's huge tradition in Hollywood, and the rule is (and the contracts say) that if you don't provide everything on the distributor's list of deliverables, they hold your money until you do - and one of the things on the list of deliverables is a music cue sheet, and every example I've ever seen (and I've seen at least 20) asks for the same information. So that's the answer as to "who told you that?" Is is possible that I'm being led down the garden path by ASCAP and the movie industry in general? Sure, but every source I consult agrees that this is the reality. I wish I could avoid it, but as I understand the situation, I have to do it, and it has to contain the info, or we'll never see our dough, ha ha. But my question remains the same - how do I get that info for the "royalty-free" music library attached to FCP?

  • FCP and soundtrack pro roundtrip problem?

Hello I am working on a video in the latest Final Cut Pro and software. I need to take out the hum of the audio, but when I send the audio file to Soundtrack Pro and take out the hum and then save it, the audio goes offline when I go back to FCP and it says something like the attributes no longer match or something. What am I doing wrong? Is there specific ways I need to do this? When you send to soundtrack pro it asks if you want to send only referenced media. I tried both way but no go.
    Any ideas?
    thanks!

  • Soundtrack Pro (randomly?) disables my Black-Magic card I use as Sound Card

I uprgraded to 5.1 FCP and now my woes begin. Before Sountrack worked seamelessly. But now, sometimes it will play back (be audible) through the video card I use as my sound card also - a Black-Magic Decklink, and sometimes it won't. It does play though the internal speaker.
But on a few occasions, with no apparent intervention on my part, the sound does come via the sound card.
I have gone to my general preference, I have gone to Sountrack Preferences. I have tried the manual, but the manual search, you know, doesn't ever list any searches that bear at the moment at hand.
Also, Soundtrack Pro disables the card. for instance, to hear iTunes through the card, I had to quit Soundtrack Pro. Of course Apple wants to charge me for "help" with this. For myself, no idea, very stymied.

I also have the intensity settings in the mac system preferences set to y, r-y, b-y video & analog RCA Audio.
    I am still stumped!

  • Upgrade Soundtrack Pro for FCP X?

I just upgraded to 10.6.8 and FCP Studio will no longer work. I'm looking for an upgrade path for Soundtrack Pro. i have a lot of projects I still need access to in Soundtrack and wonder with the app being discontinued is there a replacement that can open and handle these files natively?
Looking at the pages for FCP-x and Logic Pro there is no mention of any of this. Are us Sountrack Pro users just stranded or are we expected to live in OSX 10.5 limbo for ever?

    Adam,
It may not be helpful. but I have been running FCS3 and all it's apps (including STP) on OSX 10.6.8 with no glitches of any kind, it is not the apps as Studio X points out. I too don't like to spend time wiping everything down & reinstalling.
Fortunately, Macs have always played nicely with me (I have owned both PC's & Macs since the beginning - after the abacus & slide rule went out of style). PC's are of course, more ornery and get corrupted more often, at least in my experience, which is why my current PC plays second fiddle to my Mac Pro & MacBookPro.
At any rate, as GT notes, the original question about a replacemnt for STP is still open to a degree in this thread. The cold hard fact is that APPLE does not have at this time, any  "replacement" for STP, and it's commonly accepted by the experts that there is no intention in Apple to work on one.
It is worth noting that STP can export in a variety of formats (Aiff, wav. MP3, Dolby ACC, Next, Sound Designer and even compressor). If you choose not to reinstall as Studio X suggested, you could pick any of a number of software platforms which you'll have to purchase, and then export the work already done in STP to those.
Yes, it's a P.I.T.A., but Apple, like all Kings of the Jungle, does as it wants, when it wants, without regard for what YOU or I want. Join the "wish hadn't done that " club, have 2 or 3 adult beverages of your choice and adapt as best you can.

  • Logic Pro or Soundtrack Pro for Post Production (In a Pro Tools world)?

    Hey guys,
How many of you out there, is using Logic for Post Production (or Soundtrack Pro)? I know a couple of people myself, out there using Logic Pro for Post and absolutely love it. Wanted to see if there are more of you out there and what your experiences have been with Logic Pro in the area of TV, motion picture and video sound. How is it, working in a majority Pro Tools realm? Are you finding it harder to interface with other studios, running Pro Tools?
    Message was edited by: Syrcle

I find that Logic is not a substitute for Pro Tools as a post editor DAW. Having been a Logic user since 96' and a ProTools user since 92' , I cannot imagine trying to post something other than music using Logic. Of course, it could be done but, it is a matter of interchange ability and the simple editing found in Pro Tools that is easy for Post applications. Conversely, I would not be tempted to make music in a Pro Tools session, unless it was an all audio scenario without virtual midi plugins.
I love Logic for music and ProTools for post and this comes after years of messing with both in everyday real commercial environments . If you have success using Logic as a good Post audio editorial
device, then enlighten me! But,right now, I wouldn't want to make music without Logic and I would never try to mix a movie on anything else but ProTools because these are the devices I use everyday.

  • Soundtrack Pro on a Mini

I use Final Cut Pro for work on a G4. I'd like to set up a Mac Mini with just Soundtrack. However, the requirements for FCP Studio require a graphics card other than the Intel integrated.
Can I install either Soundtrack 1.2 or Soundtrack Pro 1.1 on a new Intel Mini? And, of course, will it work?
(Yes, I'll have a gig of ram and plan to have an external FireWire drive.)
    Thanks in advance,
    Martin
ps. This is also posted on the Soundtrack forum.

The graphic card requirement is all about Motion. You should be able to install this without any problem. Just select Soundtrack Pro as the only install option. Also, you're able to choose where to place the Apple Loops that are a part of STP. You can load them on the system drive, or on a firewire drive, or not load them at all. Whatever you choose, it should install and work just fine.
