Soundtrack pro round tripping to FCP

Hello,
I've been using FCP for a while now but I'm new to soundtrack Pro and working my way through the Apple Pro Training Series: Sound Editing in Final Cut Studio and soundtrack Pro. Everything is going fine and i'm getting into it - even if a bit slowly!
However when I've tried to do the round-tripping back into FCp the file doesn't appear like it says it will after export. I've just done Lesson 3 in the book (with the same thing happening to me in lesson 2) where I have finished my edit in Soundtrack Pro and I go to export, the process bar comes up and then it takes me back to FCP and my OLD sequence but the NEW sequence doesn't appear. The book says the import XML dialog will appear but it doesn't .....
I can import it manually by going to where I have saved the exported file but surely the whole idea of this round-tripping is to do it for you so you don't have to search for it...
Does anyone have any ideas why this is? Is it just as simple as something is ticked or selected somewhere?
Thanks

  • Logic pro and soundtrack pro round trip not working right?

Hi I am using soundtrack pro as a round trip from logic pro do reduces some background noise in some audio files. This was working great. Now I know with the noise reduction I just have to save the file and it updates in logic. But sometimes I was putting compression on the audio file after the noise reduction as well in soundtrack pro, I then I hit render to selection as the compression was a real time effect. After that I hit save and closed and it updated in logic. This all worked fine until today. Now just doing the noise reduction and saving all works fine. But if I put any real time effects on and do the render to selection, sound track pro just closes itself straight after it has done the render to selection and therefore I lose my work I have done on it and it doesnt update the logic project as it was saved.
Any ideas why this is happening?
    Thanks!

Just checked it out thanks, but this wont help me on this one. Where I may have put real time effects on like eq or compression I then need to render to action, after that I could flatten audio. But what is happening is that when I have put real time effects on then go to render to action (so them effects now become part of the action list) once its done the render to action it just shuts it self straight away, before I even get a chance to save it. But thanks for the guess, actually showed me something I didn't know anyway, so learnt something!! Thanks.
Thinking I might try uninstalling and installing again see if that solves it?

  • Soundtrack Pro Mixdown playback in FCP

I am trying to export a mixdown sequence from soundtrack pro to final cut pro. The only sound should be the music, but when I open the sequence up once its been exported to fcp there are no audio tracks or sound of any kind. I know it must be something simple but right now I'm at a loss of what I'm doing wrong.

They are WAV files; that may be it. I thought maybe the folder structure was getting in the way, so I tried aliases of folders that directly contained files. That didn't work. But then I remembered that I had added them to iTunes a while ago (referenced, not sucked into the iTunes Library) so I could use iTunes to search them. I made a Smart Playlist so I could get to them quickly and then search. That Smart Playlist shows up in FCP X and the files play. So that may be a solution: reference any non-cooperating folders in iTunes and get to them that way. I really do appreciate your taking time to help.

  • Add Soundtrack Pro Soignal Processing to FCP Raw Footage

I have sound from FCP video that has been successfully processed using Soundtrack Pro. I was wondering if it is possible to add the same sound adjustments to a new piece of video, and if so, how?
    Thanks

  • Round Trip using FCP Pro 7 and CS5

Attempting to import a FCP 7 timeline sequence into CS5 for some audio and video tweaking that will then be sent back to FCP 7 for final output. The computer running CS5 is a PC and we are using Tuxera fo make the drives cross-platform readable.... That part is working fine.  The XML version of the FCP 7 timeline opens just fine in CS5 also.
The problem comes in when I try to import and re-connect the media, I get a no codec warning.  The footage is XDCAM-EX wrapped in MOV for use on the FCP edit machine.

I just need to know if and how I can get that codec on my system...
Since Apple does not provide an XDCAM decoder for QuickTime on Windows (and only on Macs with FCP installed), you have to resort to third-party vendors to decode these. I'd suggest Calibrated{Q} XD Decode, which will let you work with these files on the PC. There is a demo that watermarks the footage so you can make sure it'll work for your purposes (which it should).

  • Motion to FCP round trip color shift

I've been searching all over the web and have found many posts in various forums about the gamma shift that occurs when Motion projects are imported into FCP and then exported out as an MOV (ProRes or H.264), but have yet to find a suitable solution. All of Apple's documentation seems to indicate that using Motion with FCP should be as easy as importing a Motion project to the timeline. Does anyone know how to prevent the gamma shift that ultimately makes Motion elements in the exported MOV appear washed out?
I know that I can enable FCS color matching in QuickTime to adjust the appearance of the MOV, but I'm sending this file to clients that don't use Final Cut and won't have this option; especially those on PC.

Same problem. No grade or LUT. Mac Pro Quad, BM Intensity Pro, JVC DT-V20L1UA.
My test involved NTSC color bars. I exported 10 sec bars out of FCP to a QT, reimported them and cut them back into my sequence. At that point, the imported bars were identical to the fcp bars I'd started with.
After I'd SENT sequence to Color, the bars changed, mostly in lighter in contrast & brightness plus a little hue shift.
After the scene was rendered in Color and round-tripped to FCP, the new "look" came back to fcp
Could it be in the conversion of FCP YUV to Color RGB

  • How to fix camcorder audio in Soundtrack Pro

    Hi all,
I just finished editing my short film in Final Cut Pro. The footage was awesome, however, the audio was horrible. I shot this footage using Panasonic PV-GS320, a pretty descent 3CCD camera. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any external mic output, which makes it flaw.
My question is: is it possible to "fix" this problem using Soundtrack Pro? To fix meaning to change it from a typical, cheap camcorder audio to a professional boom microphone (louder, clearer, and better).
The sound from this camera isn't that bad, actually (because although it doesn't come with any external microphone output, it does have "zoom microphone" -- whatever that means), BUT if you were a sound artist/ filmmaker/ college film instructor, you would know that my project wasn't done using an external microphone -- thus you would think that it's just a typical short movie that will end up on Youtube -- and you wouldn't give me a good grade for it.
SO is it possible to make some changes in Soundtrack Pro? I would really, really appreciate it if you guys could help me with this problem.
    Thanks very much!

    Hi Joe,
It is possible - within reason - to undertake some cleaning up of audio within STP. I am in the middle of doing this myself.
Take a look at this great article that explains the round trip between FCP and STP plus the various tools on offer and what they can do: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/soundtrack_pro_newspencer.html
    Best of luck, Mike

  • Trouble with the round trip from Soundtrack Pro 2 to Final Cut Pro

I have edited a home movie together. I then have sent the sequence to Color for grading and then after completing the Color changes and Rendering. I sent it back to Final Cut Pro. It starts out working fine but during the transfer process it stops at somewhere between 50% and 60%. It is during the "Importing XML Data" phase. It just sits there and does not change and I have to force quit to get out of it. The exact same thing happens when I try to round trip from Soundtrack Pro 2 back to Final Cut Pro. So I am unable to make use of the changes I make in these programs.
This is a round trip process that I have successfully made many times before. Nothing has changed. I am working in Final Cut Studio 2 with the latest updates on an Intel Mac. Any advice on how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

Make sure your easy setup has the correct frame rate for your sequence.  Seems crazy but somehow or other fcp assigns a frame rate to audio files.   I've found this can sometimes be tricky to get right.  Here's what I've done to force the issue.  Make sure the easy setup frame rate reflects that of the target sequence in fcp.  Create a new project.  import the audio in the new project.  And then copy the clip from the new project to your main project.
    Good luck

    Thanks.
What's I've been doing is exporting the Soundtrack files as AIFF files, then importing them into Final Cut...
It's working... at least well enough. Still seems harder then just being able to go back and forth between the two applications.
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Round-tripping with Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro problem

I sent project to Soundtrack Pro for audio repair, everything works fine until I hit save, I get a message saying that it could not be saved. Doesn't say why. I have plenty space in my drives. Unit suggestions?

Hard to say where the XML interpretation is getting lost... That it stalls at 60% could mean a number of things. If you have a cuts and dissolves simple timeline, that should not be an issue. Something is causing a corruption, though and it could be a media type, a filename (which can break folder paths), a filter or motion tab which generates an invalid value, or a recompression that violates the sequence settings.
At this point, I start cutting up the original sequence and roundtripping it until it works, or breaks and then try to figure out what's different. Often there's something hidden like an imbedded recompressor in a nested sequence or something like that, that will allow COLOR will load, grade, render, and then not know what to do to re-write the export XML, or re-imbed it illegally.
There are a lot of things that FCP does that editors take for granted that COLOR utterly cannot cope with -- but may deceptively carry along and then crash on the next step.

  • Why won't simple dissolves make the round trip back to FCP?

I have read in the Color manual and in certain places (here and the COW), that simple video transitions should be able to make the round trip back from Color to Final Cut Pro.  I have a video that I prepped for Color, only it does contain a few cross dissolves.  Everything is on one track, and the grading is done.  I see my dissolves in the Color timeline.  When I go back to FCP, however, they are gone.  Obviously, with there being no handles on Color video, I can't add them later.
I understand that I could send the clips I want to perform dissolves on with handles over to color, grade them, and send them back and THEN make the dissolve, but this would be an elaborate waste of time.  Is there a setting somewhere that I'm overlooking?  Why, when all indications are that it will work, will it not work?
Any input would save me from re-doing this whole edit.
    Thanks.
Stats:  Running Final Cut Studio 2
                Mac Pro
                FCP version 7.0.3
                Color version 1.5.3
All clips involved in this edit were QT at MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode
    Dimensions 1280x720
Let me know if you need more info.

Color doesn't work with MPEG-2 video.  It works with FCP codecs...  ProRes, DVCPRO HD, HDV, XDCAM.  And only renders out as ProRes or Uncompressed.  I've done over 100 onlines using Color, and every one of them kept the transitions intact.  Every one.  The fact that it isn't for you, means you are doing something wrong...and your codec is the obvious culprit.

  • From FCP timeline...send to soundtrack pro audio file project is greyed out

The send to multi track is not greyed out but that's not what I need.
The stereo audio file is 48KHz and I have 7 tracks of audio in the sequence all of which are stereo except the VO track.
If I use "open in editor" to open a stereo file from the timeline soundtrack only imports one channel.
I'm trying to run these stero audio clips through STP using the waveform editor to quickly analyze and fix the "clicks and pops" also adding a low cut off filter to some of the clips to help eliminate some wind noise.
Seems the only way I can get it to work is to export each clip as an aiff file and then import it to STP, edit non destructively, save as a .stap file and then reimport that .stap file back into FCP........
Any ideas why the "send to STP audio file project" is greyed out? perhaps I have forgotten a preference setting somewhere?
    All help appreciated.
    Thanks,

Hey, Dave. That can happen if you captured your files with two audio tracks instead of a single stereo track. The two channels will show up on two tracks, but they're not actually stereo in the quicktime file.
When you captured, did you click the "OO" button next to the audio channels to link them to stereo? You can look at the contents of the quicktime file with Quicktime Player and see if you've got one audio track with two channels assigned to "left" and "right". If you have some other configuration in the file, check out these old threads for workarounds, or recapture if that's an option.

  • Best program to monitor time spent on FCP, Motion, Soundtrack Pro?

I run a small company as a free lance doc-film maker and was wondering if anyone could recommend the best program for keeping track of time spent working on Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Soundtrack Pro projects for my clients.
I'd like a program that tracks how long I spend on each Final Cut Studio application, like that I can itemize my billing to clients...so many hours spent editing in FCP, doing effects in Motion, even internet research on Safari when looking for photographic/film archives.
Thanks very much in advance to anyone who can help me,
    - Nicholas

In general I'd say a spreadsheet or text document and your own diligence are close enough to get an idea, as charging for the time spent in software isn't going to make you a lot of money.

  • Fcp 7 - soundtrack pro 3.0.1

trying to get my separate audio tracks into stp for a mix.
    I've exported for soundtrack.
exported to aiff while locking out all the tracks I don't want at this time. I want two tracks @ a time and have dozens in some places.
How do I get my separate tracks into stp simply and efficiently? All I get @ this time is 'single' track that has all the audio mixed in together as if the project were finished.

    David,
I honesty think you will get a better / more accurate and helpful response ifyou post this in the Soundtrack Pro discussion area as opposed to FCP.
