Souping Up Lombard 333--OSX, DVD, Partition Questions

1) Am I right in thinking the reason I could not use my eBay iMac G5 Panther DVD is because (darn) OSX does not support the DVD function on the Lombard 333? Could I install it using my own iMac G5 and an ethernet connection? Will it have to be CDs?
2) Do I need to partition the drive if it is larger than 8 MB on a Lombard, or is that just the Wallstreet?
Right now I have a 10 GB HD and 320 MB RAM. It came with a 4 GB HD. The 10GB drive was already partitioned with 8 GB Jaguar and 2 GB 9.2. I mostly use the 9, though, because the X doesn't see my wavelan PC card and 9.2 uses it as Airport. And also because I still like 9, the OS that Would Not Die. I would like to upgrade to Panther and re-allot the partitions to give 9 more.
Tried buying a 20 GB drive for it on eBay, and it won't spin up no matter what I do with it. I think it's dead.
  Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Is there a minimum size for a partition for OSX?
Depending on the version of Mac OS X and the options you choose during the installation, the space requirement can be anywhere from 1.5GB to 10GB or more. Approximate minimum values are 2.0GB for 10.1, 3.1GB for 10.2, 3.8GB for 10.3, and 4.3GB for 10.4; to ensure that Mac OS X has enough space to function properly, set the partition to at least double the minimum requirement unless you're using a computer which limits the Mac OS X partition to 8GB.
Does it matter which partition X is on?
It will not have much effect on your machine.

  • Can't get OSX 10.3.3. installed on my souped-up Lombard

    Dear folks,
I really appreciate all the advice you gave me a couple of weeks back on configuring my souped-up Lombard for installing OS X. (vis http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3566749)
Unfortunately, I can't get it to install! I bought a universal 10.3.3 installer on DVD from OWC. But the installation hangs every time I tried to run it. It will successfully erase the drive partition I set aside for OS X, unpack and prepare the installation files, and begin processing them. But at exactly the 51% point on "Processing Base System 2", it hangs every time (I tried it several times).
The system doesn't freeze up; instead the normal installation display disappears and the screen goes crazy. Sometimes it shows rapidly-changing static-like patterns, sometimes weird "oily" washes slowly play across it like I was pressing on the LCD, other times I get patterns of vertical bars. Regardless, what happens is that the installation grinds to a halt until I reboot the machine.
So, I tried downloading and running XPostFacto. It doesn't like my system at all! It hangs with a kernel panic during the initial text screen mode. Forget that!
I'm assuming that I'm hosed; that my system is just too far off the norm to allow me to run OS X. But in case I'm wrong about that, I'm posting this request for suggestions. Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks!

Here's the bad news. Panther was never released on a DVD. Panther was a three disk CD set. The OS X installer discs had black labels with a large gray "X". What you obviously have is an OEM disk or a copy of one that will only work for the Mac model with which it came. What you need is a retail Panther package. You should call OWC and insist that is what they provide you or return your money.
You should be able to get the proper set at http://www.applerescue.com/. You may also find them on eBay, but be sure you get the real thing as I've described.

  • DVD for Lombard 333

Well, my beautiful excellent Wallstreet 300 had an unfortunate interaction with some Mike's Hard Lemonade, and although I did what I could to get it dried out immediately, it's not behaving.
While waiting for a chance to spread stuff out on a table and do some work on it and another Wallstreet, I snarfed a Lombard 333 from eBay and it's on its way. It says it has I think 128 MB RAM and a CD drive. naturally I am hoping to upgrade.
I saw this listing on eBay for a replacement drive for the Lombard and Pismo, but I have read that the Lombard 333's motherboard will not support DVD. This listing says it will with a PC card.
    24x CDRW/DVD Combo drive for Powerbook Pismo G3/400 or G3/500, Lombard 400 or 333*
    * DVD functionality in Lombard 333 requires PC Card DVD Decoder
This brand new 24x CDRW/DVD Combo drive can burn cd-r's at 24x and cd-rw's at 24x, it can read cd's at 24x and dvd's at 8x. This combo drive is fully supported by iTunes and Disc Burning in OS X.
This 24x combo drive can be installed in the original cd or dvd drive expansion bay caddy that came with your Pismo/Lombard cd or dvd. This drive is bootable in your Powerbook Pismo or Lombard. This drive is set at "Master" so your Powerbook will wake from sleep without freezing. You can also take out and put in the drive without freezing.
To install this drive on your existing Powerbook drive caddy requires a small screwdriver. There are six screws you need to remove in order to take the drive out of the caddy, two on the top of the drive, two on the right and two on the left. Once these are removed, the Pismo's cd or dvd drive can be easily slide out of the caddy. The picture to the right is the combo drive in the Pismo's expansion bay, it looks just like the Pismo drive, with the exception of the front faceplate.
I will send the complete illustrated instructions with this combo drive.
My question is, will this work? Could I use the PC card I have been using with my Wallstreet for DVD?

    Sludgedragon,
You are correct that the 333MHz Lombard did not come with the DVD decoder chip on the logic board as did the 400s. However, there were some build-to-order 333s that had the DVD option so it will be worth a check of the Apple System Profiler to see if it reports the decoder.
According to this doc, Apple's DVD Decoder PC Card for the Wallstreet does not work in the Lombard.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30632
If you happen to have a third-party card (MCE or VST), this may not be the case. MCE is selling their $100 DVD PC cards for $20:

  • Problems booting from OSX DVD and External FW HDD

I've been trying recently to take a Dual-Bay Firewire Harddrive unit running a Oxford Semiconductor OXFW911 Chipset. I have two 250GB Hard drives and on one of these I have it Partitioned into 3 partitions. One is my Scratch Partition, one is the Restore of a DVD Install Disc and the last is a "Pre-Installed" version of OSX. I want to be able to boot from the Install DVD partition and the "Pre-Installed" Partition. I have successfully Imaged the Install DVD Partition and was able to boot from that partition once to install OSX on a computer without a DVD drive.
Problem now is that I can't boot from the partition, or I should say, I select it from the Sys Prefs and it will pass the grey screen to a the blue background and just get hung up. It never displays the dialog to select a language to begin the install.
I also can not boot from the Install DVD. It will show up in the Startup Disk in Sys Prefs but always ends up hanging.
I've tried booting using "Option" and it displays my Internal HD and then two icons for the Install DVD Partition on the External FW Drive. Neither one allows for me boot up.
Any ideas for what I may be missing?
    Thanks,
    Russ

It appears that if the Partition with OSX was installed from anything besides the Restore Disc, the Powerbook won't boot to it.
I think this is ridiculous, and if I've went wrong somewhere, someone please correct me.
    Thanks.

  • Lombard 333 to 400

Hello all. I have a Lombard 333 MHz that I would like to upgrade to a 400 MHz. My question is, can a Pismo 400 MHz processor work in a Lombard? I think I have seen postings that such a combination will not work and I would need a Lombard 400 MHz chip to successfully perform the upgrade. Does anyone out there know about this? Thanks in advance. John

The Pismo has a Firewire controller on the Logicboard, which the Lombard does not. And the Lombard has a SCSI controller which the Pismo does not. Whether this affects the cooling of the processor on the logicboard, I don't know, but since the various ports different by the logicboard, and shifting the logicboards would really be the only way of doing this, I would not try it.

  • Restoring information/creating partition question

I am trying to make my Boot Camp partition larger using this procedure:
    http://dustyreagan.com/how-to-increase-or-decrease-your-boot-camp-partition/
I completed the first 4 steps successfully, but when I try to partition the disk, I get this error:
"Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I have sufficient external Hard Drives to back up my disk, but I do not have my install disks since I am currently living away from home. Do I need to have the install disks to do what the message above asks me to or not?

    Hi,

Maybe a simple reboot of your Mac can resolve this.

Yes, the OSX DVD is essential since Disk Utility can not format the HD from which the Mac is booted.
But if you have enough external HDs you might wanna use SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html to make a bootable clone of your internal OSX HD to an external one.
Then boot your Mac from that external HD and use Disk Utility to reformat your internal HD.

  • MacBook will not boot from HD or OSX DVD.

When I start it, it makes the starting sound then stays on gray screen with HD in it and OSX DVD when I press "option" to see what boot disks it has it sounds like its reading the DVD then comes up with a gray screen with the curser but nothing to boot from. But if i remove the HD it boots up the OSX disk but cant reinstall because it has no HD to put it on... Anyway to get it to start from disk and reinstall and make it work? Would a Different HD help?

Make sure the hdd is installed and once you see that loading icon you can take the finger from C.
What version of OS X are you trying to install?

  • DVD @ access questions?

I am putting together a short promo DVD for a client and I have a catalogue of their products as an image on the DVD that you can access via the main menu. What I want to do is have it so the products are 'clickable' and will take the user [when online] to the clients web site. I did a search but I cant find out how to link this page to the DVD access settings in the inspector. Any help? Also, can you link a button to open up and email application so the user can email direct from watching this DVD? Questions questions questions....thanks in advance. Oh, Im on DVDSP2.

DVD@ccess is actually quite limited and not entirely compatible with the range of DVD playback software/hardware available on a PC... you might be better off using eDVD from Sonic (which is PC software, making use of the Interactual Player, rather than @ccess).
However, @ccess links are embedded in to a menu - so any button you have got needs to go to a menu that simply has the @ccess URL embedded and the menu needs to time out to return to where the button was. For launching a web site simply use the standard URL for the site, include the http:// info in that.
Now, sending an email is not going to work all of the time, but you can try it out and see if it has the functionality you want. The URL to place into the menu for DVD@ccess is the HTML 'mailto' code. simply write:
mailto:[email protected], replacing name, domain and .com with the revelant info. If you have got the @ccess links enabled on your Mac, try simulating the menu with this in it... you should see Mail launch (it takes a moment for it to appear, but should work). Whether or not this will work on a PC with Outlook I don't know...

  • Data Warehouse Partitioning question

    Hi All,
I have a data warehousing partitioning question - I am defining partitions on a fact table in OWB and have range partitioning on a contract number field. Because I am on 10gR2 still, I have to put the contract number field into the fact table from its dimension in order to partition on it.
    The tables look like
    Contract_Dim (dimension_key, contract_no, ...)
    Contract_Fact(Contract_Dim, measure1,measure2, contract_no)
    So my question:
When querying via reporting tools, my users are specifying contract_no conditions on the dimension object and joining into the contract_fact via the dimension_key->Contract_dim fields.
I am assuming that the queries will not use partition pruning unless I put the contract_fact.contract_no into the query somehow. Is this true?
If so, how can I 'hide' that additional step from my end-users? I want them to specify contract numbers on the dimension and have the query optimizer be smart enough to use partition pruning when running the query.
    I hope this makes sense.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I am about to start a partitioning program on my dimension / fact tables and was hoping to see some responses to this thread.
I suggest that you partition the tables on the dimension key, not any attribute. You could partition both fact and dimension tables by the same rule. Hash partitions seem to make sense here, as opposed to range or list partitions.

  • LPAR - LOGICAL PARTITION QUESTION -

    Hello SDN Experts.
    LPAR (LOGICAL PARTITION QUESTION)
Our current Production Environment is running in Distributed Installation on
IBM System P5 570 Servers AIX ver 5.2, each node is running two Applications: SAP ERP 2005  SR1 (ABAP + JAVA)  and CSS. (Customer Service System)
    Node One
u2022     SAP Application (Central Instance, Central Services)
u2022     Oracle 9i Instance for CSS Application.
    Node Two.
u2022     Oracle 10G Instance for SAP Application
    u2022     CSS Application.
To improve performance we are planning to create a new LPAR for SAP.
According to the IBM HW Partner LPAR is logically isolated with different HW/SW resource(CPU/Memory /Disk resource, IP/hostname/mount point)...
    Question:
I have this two possible solutions to copy SAP instances (app + db)  to new LPAR, can I apply SCENARIO 2, which in my opinion is easier than SCENARIO 1.
    SCENARIO 1.
In order to migrate application and database instances to the new LPAR do I need to follow the procedure explained in the guide:
(*) System Copy for SAP Systems Based on SAP NetWeaver 2004s SR1 ABAP+Java Document version: 1.1 ‒ 08/18/2006
    SCENARIO 2.
After create all file systems (required in AIX) to copy data from Applications and Database Instances to their respective LPARs and change the ip address and hostnames in parameter files according to the following SAP Notes:
Note 8307 - Changing host name on R3 host
Note 403708 - Changing an IP address
Which is the best scenario SAP recommends in this case ?
    Thanks for your comments.

If your system is a combined ABAP + Java instance you can´t manually change the hostname. It´s not only those places that are listed in that note but much more, partially on filesystems in .properties files, partially in the database.
Doing that manually may work but since the process is not documented anywhere and since it depends on the applications running on top of the J2EE instance it´s not supported.
For ABAP + Java instances you must use the "sapinst-way" to get support in case of problems.
See note 757692 - Changing the hostname for J2EE Engine 6.40/7.0 installation

  • Drivers for XP with no OSX DVD?

I have a bootcamp install of XP running, but cannot get the bootcamp assistant in 10.6.2 to burn a driver disk. I have checked through the bootcamp app resources, no drivers either. i have checked apple support, downloaded the boot camp 2.1 driver package and 2.2 update, which doesn't run in XP (just immediately terminates). also, my macbook pro did not arrive with a OSX install dvd, which is leaving me unable to find working XP drivers anywhere. any ideas?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
the BootCamp Assistant no longer features the BootCamp Drivers.
Starting with OSX 10.5 Leopard Apple has put the BootCamp Drivers onto the OSX DVD.
So, usually you put in the OSX DVD while you are running BootCamp Windows and the Driver Setup starts automatically.
Also, all Mac purchases do include an OSX DVD.
Have a look inside the package your Mac came in. There should be a smaller case inside in which you should find the OSX DVD alongside the Mac manual.
    Regards

  • OSX on souped-up Lombard-- best version, HD config?

    Dear folks,
I am looking for some advice on installing OS X on my 1999 (Lombard) PowerBook. I will still be booting into Mac OS 9.2.2 90% of the time, but it's reached the point where I'm needing some OS X capability on this machine. It's been upgraded to a G4 500 MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM, and it has a DVD burner. I'm installing an 80 GB hard drive, up from my current 20.
Topic 1: Note that this is a pre-Firewire machine. From what I've gleaned, OS 10.3.9 is officially supported, right? My priority is reliable and stable; is there any good reason I'd want to be mucking with things like XPostFacto to get to 10.4?
Topic 2: I am a big fan of separate disk partitions for separate purposes. My hard drive Is currently configured with
-- a small Mac OS partition that holds the System Folder and only files that the OS or installers insist on placing there
    -- an applications partition, and
    -- a data partition.
My intention is to add a separate partition for the OS X system. What is an appropriate size for that partition? Would it be best to also use that partition for any pure OS X applications and data, set up new, separate partitions for those pure OS X apps and data, or put them in the existing applications and data partitions? Does Classic get it's own partition separate from OSX and my true 9.2.2 partition?
I'll have 50 gig of free hard drive space to play with, so I can be generous with partitions, both in size and number. I just want to do it the most sensible way.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Option booting is only available on machines using Open Firmware. Lombard does not support OF, so there is no Option booting available. You can only switch between OS 9 and OS X using the Startup Disk control panel and preference pane, respectively. Partitioning for OS 9 is really for both convenience and separation.
OS X normally expects to find certain folders located in a specific place on the startup volume. This includes the Applications folder and the Home folder. Moving the Home folder is not only ill-advised it also involves more than simply moving it to another location or volume. Furthermore, if that volume were damaged you would no longer be able to startup the OS. Far better to keep the Home folder in its default location. You can move the Applications folder but only if you put an alias to its new location in the old location otherwise the OS and applications will not know where the folder is.
Bear in mind that OS X is not anything like OS 9. Many things you take for granted doing in OS 9 may not work in OS X or may cause major problems. My advice is leave things alone until you become far more familiar with OS X. Partitioning merely for organizational needs is highly over-rated.
If you do partition you should assign the largest partition you feel you can tolerate for OS X. It will grow on you quickly over time. Certainly not less than 50 GBs. You will need to maintain at least 10 GBs of that space free at all times which leaves about 40 GBs for use by the OS. Depending upon what you do your Home folder can get pretty large. I don't do any video or audio work yet my Home folder is 24 GBs.

  • First step to partition question

There are three 600GB HDs internal in my MacPro G5.
    HD1 is the main one.
HD2 has just been set up for Time Machine backup.
HD3 is connected but not used (yet).
Question 1: Does this plan make sense:
    A) Use BootCamp to partition HD2 with 100GB for Windows (which Windows is recommended?)
    B) Use Disk Utility to partition HD3 with 200GB for a cloned OSX for start-up, 200GB for video download storage, and the remaining 200GB for additional storage.
Question 2: When I open Disk Utility to partition the HD3, there is no 'partition' option showing. It shows as a Mac HD, and it is unused. Do I need to erase HD3 first in order to partition it?
    Best regards, Isshi.

On a Mac Pro, forget all about using Boot Camp Assistant — it is totally unnecessary. This is how to devote an entire Mac Pro HDD to Windows.
    (1) Insert the Windows 7 install DVD then shut down.
    (2) Remove all drives from inside the Mac Pro except the empty HDD. This is done for safety reasons to ensure only the intended drive is formatted for Windows.
    (3) Startup the Mac Pro. Having only one choice the MP will boot from the Win7 DVD and you can begin the format and install process.
    (4) When the installation is completed, replace the Win7 DVD with your Snow Leopard DVD and do the driver installation.
    (5) Shutdown and replace your other drives.
Mac Pros make this process very very simple.

Late 2007 Macbook Pro ( 2.53 , 4gb Ram, 320 GB hd) Will Load into osx but has the grey status bar at every boot ( Approximate 10 Mins for full boot) Ran disk utility in osx found issues and says run off DVD to repair the disk. Ran disk utility off the original DVD that came with the mac, wont find the hard drive to run disk utility. try to reinstall the OS. The installer wont find the hard drive? any idea how to resolve the issue so I can re install the OS to remove the grey status bar.

I can make a partition on the HD.
You'll have to decide which works best for you:
-boot from install disc, partition the external HD, install OS X on it, boot from it and see if HD shows up there so you can try to repair it (make sure you don't wipe out your TM data; your internal HD may not be reliable).
-get DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro or another disk repair utility and see what it can repair (note that these are more expensive than a new HD, but can come in handy to have around).
-get one of the SMART utilities that supposedly tell you more about your HD (I'm not a fan of either of the ones I've seen/tried and am far from confident in their results).
-get a new HD and try restoring from your TM backup.
-get an external enclosure (15 bucks or so for a USB model from newegg, amazon, macsales and others).
