Source in External Drive NOT imported to library
Hello,
I am new Mac user(7 days old) . First application i tried is iphoto. I did not want to load my mac mini with GB's of entire family collection photos so i clicked iphoto-->preferences-->Advanced tab--> UNCHECKED "Copy Items to Iphoto library". I used import library function and started organizing photos by event and then added, title, rating, description etc.(at this point i was equating with itunes that meta data information in stored along with the source). So after 4-6 hours of work around 1000 photos i wanted to validate my assumption. Copied Photos from HardDrive-A to HardDrive-B. From Harddrive photo when i used import library function none of the photos retained the meta data information that i entered. After going thru this forum i realized that is FEATURE of iphoto not to mess up the source. Am i Correct ? If wrong, kindly tell me the steps. If yes,
Is it possible to get that 1000 photos to local library ? if so steps.
I opened up support ticket and visited apple store couple of times and no answer so far. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
as a point of reference - iPhoto is a photo database manager and one of its primary design criteria is to always maintain the digital original - so it does not modify the original.
so i clicked iphoto-->preferences-->Advanced tab--> UNCHECKED "Copy Items to Iphoto library".
This is called a referenced library
When you do this you tell iPhoto to let you manage the original - you implicitly agree that you will not move it and it you delete it in iPhoto you will be responsible for deleting the original if you do not want it any more - this mode has many potential problems and is not recommended
Basically what you will find is that any photo attributes you change iPhoto are not reflected in the photo file until you export the photo - the only way to safely and successfully see your photos is using iPhoto - when you access them using the finder you may not find all elements ad you risk corrupting the database
If you want to return to the recommended managed library alias herder - http://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/downloads/aliasherder/ - will move the photos into the iphoto library for you ( back up your library prior to running) and checking the "copy imported items to the iPhoto libary" will keep the managed libraby in future imports

Keeping music files on external drive, but import onto library?
I am a new mac user, and I used to have iTunes on a PC with all my music files saved onto an external hard-drive, but now since i got my Mac I want to be able to view and play my music on my iTunes while keeping the files on the external so as not to take up all my hard drive space. How would I go about telling iTunes to read the files from an exteral source?
Thanks!!File > Add Folder to Library.
But first, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General and make sure that "Copy Files to iTunes folder..." is NOT checked. -
How do you import photos from a library on an external drive to the current library running in iPhoto? I have a few different pictures in each library and would like to have all my pictures in both libraries. The library on the external drive is my backup. I would appreciate any help.
Depends on exactly what you want to do.
Just move some of the Photos? FIle -> Export from one and export the shots to the Finder. Then import them to the other.
This User Tip
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Move the photos and all versions and metadata: use iPhoto Library Manager it's the only way to do this while preserving everything. Merge two Libraries into one?
If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager -
How can I download my iMac iTunes library to an external drive and reload the library to iTunes on a PC?
Hi Niel. Can you be move specific for those of us not tech savy? 1 - Can you provide steps to back up the library? 2 - How do you organize the library? 3 - When you move the entire iTunes folder, does it include iTunes paid for music along with downloaded music from CDs? Thanks

I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?
Exactly what did you do?
The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

I have an existing mini mac and 4 tb external drive.
My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...
I have purchased a new mini mac and I want to leave the library where it is on the external drive but move to new mini mac and have it show as it did on the old mini mac..
what do i need to do ?
I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
ThanksI had already tried that one and got this...
below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?
thanks for help -
how can i move a vlc movie held on my external drive onto my itunes library (so i can then load it onto my ipad to watch?
That is the only logical conclusion. There is an easy solution. On the Mac app store download a free app called smartconverter. It is free. You just drag and drop file into app and it will convert to any file u want. I hope that foxes your issue

I have my Time Machine on an external drive (not connected to Airport Extreme) and I have an external HD attached to airport extreme. Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme. How?
Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme.
Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire. -
I have an iMac and I am running out of disc space. I am considering an external drive to house my iTunes library. If I buy a second drive to operate as a back up will time machine back up the disc on the IMac and the external drive with the iTunes library?
If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.
iTunes: library on EHD
iPhoto: How to move the Library to EHD

how do i launch iphoto on an external drive with my iphoto library already on it, how do i launch iphoto on an external drive with my iphoto library already on it
If you start iPhoto while holding down the option key you will get the library choice window.
From here you can select the library on the external drive and have iPhoto open it. -
Drive not found in library database
Greetings.
I'm new to OSB and am having tape drive, volume problems.
File system backups only complete successfully when drive (IBM4_0_0_1_1) is used. When OSB attempts to use other drives in the library it logs the following errors listed in "Transcript".
I'm running OSB (10.4.0.3.0) on a Linux server (Oracle Linux Server release 6.0) with a SL500 library controller by a ACSLS(8.3.0) server.
Please advise.

Thanks for your response.
ACSLS is part of the configuration requirements I need to have in this OBS environment.
I'm going to re install OBS just to see if anything changes.
Thanks again.
Update:
When configuring devices in OSB that are ACSLS in nature it is a requirement to restart the obacslibd after mkdev or certain chdev commands are preformed.
After the daemon was restarted I was able to use the attached tape drives. -
USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop
I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
Any suggestions.Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library
How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library? I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's? I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.
Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss? In the iPhoto Library? Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"? Quality? Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type? Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply... -
is their another way like to use my time capsule as an external drive not using time machine?thanks
You do not have to use Time Machine.. but the TC is hardly suitable for a NAS.. it has no means to back itself up and is relatively slow. Still that is up to you..
CCC or Superduper are good backup softwares .. and there are a number of others. -
ITunes library on external drive, starting without causes library chaos
I have my iTunes library on an external drive (WD MyBook USB). The iTunes library is consolidated into one directory and has been working fine under OSX 10.4. I could disconnect the drive, access and use iTunes on the MBP (for example ripping CDs or browsing iTunes Store) and then when I reconnect the drive it would sync back, and show the full library.
Now though I find that when I disconnect my external drive iTunes sets the library to the Users/Mike/Music/iTunes/ directory and when I reconnect the external drive it doesn't recognise that the audio files are now available again i.e. go back to using the library file on my external drive.
I may be misinterpreting / misrepresenting what happens when using an external drive but the behaviour does seem to have changed recently. I've twice had to reset and rebuild my library when starting iTunes to recognise the external drive recently. The process works, it's just slow and tedious.
I've recently upgraded to OSX 10.5.2. Don't know if that makes any difference?Using an EHD to run iTunes from has always worked this way. If you don't have the EHD available & open iTunes, iTunes will default the location of the iTunes music folder back to the main drive as that's where iTunes thinks the location is supposed to be. All you have to do is close iTunes, boot up the EHD, & re-open iTunes, problem solved.
I know it's annoying. I couldn't tell you how many times I forgot to have the EHD available to iTunes when I was still on my old PC. Usually I would catch it immediately, other times I would have ripped a CD or purchased from the store, realize the problem, then have to copy all of the new files over to the EHD, & delete them from the main drive. It does the exact same thing on a Mac, no way around it. Hope this helps.
