Source monitor quality issues...

Hi Guys,
I hope someone can help. I've done a lot of searching for some help with this question;
I've been using Premiere Pro CS3 for a little while and am slowly mastering (learning) the basics!
I recently imported a .mov file in PremPro to add some music to it.
The strange thing is, after import, the movie seems washed out/faded in the source monitor and also when I export the final comp.
When I open the .mov in Quicktime and After Effects and view it, it's perfect.
I'm working on a MacPro tower (i'm at home now and can't exactly remember the spec! ) But running OS 10.4+
When I open the same .mov file in Premiere on my MacPro Laptop at home the movie preview is fine!?
I'm sure i'm doing something very wrong!? Any ideas guys?
Apologies for the lack of machine specs.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums.
Do a search with the keywords "quicktime" and "gamma". I'm sure that is what is affecting you. I personally don't use Quicktime.
Cheers
Eddie

  • Program monitor and source monitor display issues

Hello, my program monitor is displaying strange colours (inverted?) when playing video. In addition, the source monitor will never display any video although audio plays back fine.
I am running on a Lenovo ThinkPad X200 laptop with Windows XP 32-bit and an Intel X4500MHD video card with the latest Lenovo-certified driver version.
From my testing, this problem appears regardless of project settings, file/footage settings, etc. I originally had the K-Lite codec pack installed although I have uninstalled that with no luck.
This problem surfaced from the moment I opened Premiere after first installing it and I have tried reinstalling the program, my video card drivers, and uninstalling the previously mentioned codecs.
Also I have a thread on this at the DVinfo forums which has had many responses although no working solution.

I would try whether killing these processes will help. It may well be that when you kill them all you may encounter hangs, because one or more may be needed for your machine. I would start by killing all Lenovo processes. One would expect that one of these processes may cause your problems, but unless you try it, you can't be sure. Unfortunately I don't have a Lenovo, so I can only guess.

  • Second Display Quality Issue

I have a mid-2010 iMac 27" and it works wonderfully for me. I need a second monitor to place other applications on, so I grabbed an unused Asus VN247H monitor that my son was not using. It has a 24 or so inch display and accepts HDMI and VGA inputs. I purchased an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and connected the Asus to the back of the iMac. It works, but I'm underwhelmed by the quality I get on the Asus. Yeah, I know - it isn't a top-of-the-line monitor, and it is never gonna look as good as the iMac, but it isn't a $10 el cheapo, either. It is a good monitor and has a 1ms refresh rate. Anyway, no matter what resolution I try using, the output on that second display looks, well... crappy. The text letters are a little blurry, they are a lot larger than I figured they would be, and - I don't know - it just isn't what I was expecting. One thing I notice is that in the documentation for the monitor, it shows that I should be able to go up to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't the case. When I bring up the OS X System Preferences-->Displays, on the Asus VGA part it only shows a max setting of 1600 x 1200. I tried clicking that but the monitor complains and sez it's past the capability of itself. I am supposing it's because of having VGA instead of digital??
So, I've ordered the Apple Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter in hopes that an HDMI digital connection will give me better looking display and the full compliment of resolution options. Am I out in left field on this supposition? Or, is there some other thing I've not thought about in order to get a sharp looking second display?
    Thanks, Jim

Well, after four days, there have been a grand total of ZERO replies to this post / question. Either my question was lame, or no one else has run into a second monitor quality issue. At any rate, I'm answering my own posting - perhaps someone, somewhere might run into the issue and come across this information.
The answer to the question is: YES, changing to an HDMI connection between the iMac and the secondary monitor made a HUGE difference in quality. Why I went with a VGA adapter in the first place is unknown. But the HDMI connection is for sure the way to go. Colors look good, text is "almost" as good as on the iMac.
    Problem solved.

  • Interpret Footage Source Monitor Issue

    Hello,
I am trying to work through the Adobe Production Premium CS6 Classroom in a book.  In lesson 3, they have a 60p (59.9401) video file, and they instruct us to Interpret the footage as 24p (23.976).
If I add the resulting video clip to the timeline, everything is fine on the Program monitor.  But when I open the video clip on the Source monitor, things are screwed up.  The source monitor plays the video, in slow motion for the duration of the clip at 60p, but then switches to black for the remainder of the clip duration at 24p.  (E.g., "Live_23-60" is 2 seconds long at 60p, and 5 seconds long at 24p.  When playing Live_23-60 in the source monitor at 24p, I get slow video for 2 seconds, and black video for 3 seconds.)
This is on the most up to date CS6 (PP is version 6.0.5 (001 (MC: 264587)) ) at the time of this post.
Is anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks

Did you try with another clip ?
You have to locate the problem more precisely :
if it works with another clip, then it's a problem from the clip
if it don't work with another clip, find a clip with a different codec
if the clip with a different codec work, then it's a problem from a codec
if none works, it's a software problem, you might wan't to try to delete the preferences of Premiere Pro, they might have got corrupted

  • Source Monitor Issue

    Hello everyone,
Since yesterday i am having a problem with the Source Monitor in Premiere Pro CS5.5 (And 6). Whenever i double click the file from my project menu nothing happens with the source monitor, like the file doesn't even open. But when i double click the file from the timeline, everything is fine. This problem i am having is both with CS5.5 and CS6 so iam assuming it has something to do with my pc instead of premiere. Anyone else had this problem? This is a big issue for me because i always cut my clips before dragging them in the timeline (i work with alot of clips).
    Thanks!

  • Source Monitor - Huge audio issue

At first I thought I was going crazy... I was getting all audio on timeline but only one track in the source monitor.
Then found out that this was only the case with 2 track mono clips.
Why does the source monitor play back all tracks of a stereo clip but only track one of a 2 track mono clip?
I've got a stack of clips from a shoot which are interviews.... Question mic on track 2 Answer mic on track 1
Anyone got any idea how I utilise the source monitor if I can't hear audio.
I dont want to modify all clips to stereo in the bin and I certainly don't want to select different tracks each time via the display mode drop down.
Looks like I'll just be editing straight into the timeline.
    What a miss from adobe!

Why does the source monitor play back all tracks of a stereo clip but only track one of a 2 track mono clip?
Well, strictly speaking, Premiere isn't playing back all tracks of a stereo clip and only one track of a multi-mono clip, but rather, Premiere is playing back the first audio track of a clip, regardless of the channel mapping. To Premiere, a media clip with a stereo track has one audio track (not two), so that's why you hear both channels in that case.
But, to the crux of your question and lament: I agree. It's a pain, particularly when dealing with footage like P2 MXF that contains 2 or 4 mono tracks. Due to the way I shoot, I usually have my primary audio on track 2, so using a usual Source/Program editing practice is difficult. Sounds like your workflow and expectation is the same.
So until we get a way to select the audio track to be monitored from the Composite Video view (feature request: Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form), the workaround is to work in a sequence, or to switch to Audio view mode and then select the track you want to hear. There is a keyboard shortcut you can set to bring up the Audio view (I have that set to F4 and Composite Video to F3), but sadly, none exists to switch the monitor track. The track you select in Audio view is persistent in Composite Video view, but unfortunately, that setting/selection is not remember from clip to clip.
I've lamented this myself, but hadn't gotten around to putting together a solid feature request; I think I'll do that now, and hope you will too.
EDIT: sorry, missed you'd already said you don't want to toggle tracks. So... yeah... that's all there is...

I cant drag footage from the source monitor to the program monitor window to add it to the sequence timeline. I get a hand symbol instead Mac os 10.8.4 / CS6

sure that works, but I'm trying to follow a tutorial and can't see any reason why my software dosen't do as the tutorial suggests it should . .

Is that true for all GoPro video formats or just some of the newer (higher resolution/frame rate) one?  The GoPro has several different pre-sets and I typically like to get as much resolution as possible for my source and for highspeed subjects like sports I try to use higher framerates as well.  Are you suggesting that I convert the source files to Cineform avi and then edit those resulting AVI's in CS6?

  • Jerky playback in Source Monitor (vs. Windows Media Player) ...

I am a new user of CS5.5.   I've read the FAQ and other posts and understand that my machine is underpowered.
That said, why do my HD clips play smoothly with Windows Media Player or Quicktime, but play jerky in the PP Source Monitor?  What is it about PP's source monitor player that causes clips to choke when they can play back smoothly on the same computer using other software?   Are there any other workarounds other than a faster machine I can do in the meantime until I upgrade my hardware?
For example, I see the "render entire work area" option under the Sequence menu as noted above - is there any way to do something similar to get PP to (pre) render the clips in the Project Panel for follow up editing in the Source Monitor window?
What about batch encoding to an uncompressed format and then editing the resultant clips?  I would be concerned about loss of quality here though.  Being new to PP, not even sure this question makes any sense in the first place.
    Thanks!

Good news for you...its not designed that way and a great playback experience is possible.
Bad news is...you have to work out why you are not getting it!
(It has nothing to do with Quadro Cards because plenty of users with other cards have no issue either.)
Well, I'm just going by what I've seen in the past few years. When Premiere CS4 came out I had an Intel Quad Core 2.66 Ghz, 8 GB of RAM, Intel motherboard and an Nvidia 7950GT card. Playback was fine in Vegas, skipped frames in Premiere. Then on my current machine, an AMD 1090T 6 cores @3.2 Ghz, G.Skill 16 GB of RAM, a top of the line Gigabyte motherboard, and at first an ATI Radeon 4850HD, same thing, Vegas played fine, Edius much better (but nothing beats Edius in speed), and Premiere CS5 stuttered like crazy. Now, same machine but with an eVGA GTX570 instead of the ATI, Windows 7 x64, fresh install just one day old. Premiere CS6 does the same thing. If it's my machine, I have no idea what could it be, but the fact that it did the same on two different cards on this machine, and that Premiere CS4 used to do the same in a totally different machine, plus the fact that two other NLEs didn't have that issue, tells me Premiere has a problem at displaying video inside the GUI.
Maybe it could be that most people don't see stutter because they leave the playback quality in automatic? I'm sure I don't have any stutter if I do that, but it looks terrible. Some frames look fine, others look like the pixels got drunk and had a night out with crack whores Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but you get the point.
If anyone has a suggestion I'd be happy to try it. It's not a terrible issue for me, I always edit with the TV set on and that is fed by the Matrox MXO2 Mini with perfect quality.

  • Switching ExternalMonitor View from "Source Monitor" to "Program Monitor"?

This worked fine in CS6, but I switched to Premiere CC and my external monitor is displaying the contents of Premiere's "Source Monitor" only, not the "Program Monitor". When the Timeline or Program monitor is selected, the extrenal monitor is black. But slecting Source Monitor plays fine on the extrenal moitor (through SDI connection)
How do I switch to the viewing the Program Monitor signal in my external monitor instead of the Source Monitor?
Tech Setup: using Blackmagic ultrastudio mini monitor to send SDI signal. Have installed the latest driver for the Blackmagic ultrastudio, which is approved for Adobe CC. Everything works perfectly in Premiere CS6, it's an issue inside Premiere CC.

  • Has Apple addressed poor sound quality issues with new 160GB iPod classic?

I just bought a new 160GB iPod classic, replacing a perfectly good 80GB iPod Video (5.5), thinking that the newer one would be superior to my 3 year old model. I discovered that the sound of the new unit was flat and muddy compared to the older model. I found that the 5th gen iPod video was more "spacial", if that's an appropriate word to use; the bass was more present and more clearly defined, as was the rest of the sonic spectrum. I searched several forums to research this issue and while there were numerous references to this issue, all of the posts I found referred to the original iPod classics (80GB and 160GB) and not the later 120GB classics nor the new 160GB classics like the one I bought. Has Apple done anything to address this issue since the first classics were released or are the new ones still suffering from the same sound quality issues as the original classics?

Based on your observations here, they apparently have not changed the sound quality since the original 160GB classic. I noticed a clear narrowing of the sound stage (ambiance) between the 5.5G 80Gb and my 6G 160GB. You're describing the same characteristic. I don't own the newest 160GB version and came here today to see if it might have improved the sound quality back to the 5.5 spaciousness. Note that the 5.5G has a higher signal to noise ratio than the 6G, making it difficult for me to enjoy it through efficient balanced armature in ear monitors like the Shure SE530s or Ulimate Ears Triple.Fi 10s.

  • Video won't play in timeline or source monitor

I recently purchased a Canon HG10 camcorder and have been attempting to edit the AVCHD .mts files using Premiere Pro CS4 (4.2.1). However, I have been unable to play the video in either the timeline or source monitor. Both the video and audio will play for a fraction of a second and then stop. I thought it might be an issue with the .mts file so I converted it to several other formats (Quicktime, H.264, MPEG4, etc.) and I still can't get any video to play. I imported and tried playing other video, but to no avail. I can edit, scrub, export, apply effects, and do pretty much anything else - but I can not get it to play in the timeline. I do have Final Cut Express and if I convert the .mts file to Quicktime I can edit it, but I would like to be able to edit the native Canon AVCHD.
    Current system:
    iMac 10.6.4
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon X1600
    74 GB hard drive space
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Jason

    Jason,
The first thing that I would check would be your Playback Preferences. Please list your settings, and folk here can review them and possibly spot something simple.
Next, I would do one of two things, regarding your Catalyst drivers for you ATI/AMD card. If you do not have the latest driver, download and install it. If you DO have the latest Catalyst driver, keep it around in a safe folder, but download and install an earlier version. Cannot recall the exact numbers now, but a few users had to go back about three versions. Also, since those driver versions were listed in this forum, I'd bet that at least two more have been released. Going back a few months, it seems that there were 2 - 3 versions, that did not work well with some Adobe programs.
Though I have all nVidia cards, I keep drivers going back about 6 mos., as I never know when I might encounter an issue and need to roll-back.
Also, as the gaming market drives the video card business, and their drivers, it is possible that some gamer-only module has been added. That happened with nVidia drivers about a year ago. For a couple of versions, one had to manually disable a 3D and another gamer-only module. Later versions installed with these off, unless the user turned them on.
Last thought - check your OpenGL settings, and depending on your OS, check Hardware Acceleration. In your Catalyst console, check what your 3D settings are. You want to set any to "Let the application choose," or similar syntax.
Good luck, and hope that something there helps you.

  • Quality issues with VGA port on Type 2504 docking station

    Hi,
I see quality issues on the VGA output of the Type 2504 docking station with a T61. The monitor image is blurred, not much, but enough to be irritating. When I compare the DVI output with the VGA output on two equal NEC MultiSync LCD 2170NX monitors it is a clear difference. If I connect the LCD monitor to the VGA output of the T61 itself, the picture is clean. I have tried both monitors with different cables in different configurations and also adjusted monitors manually, and my conclusion is that it must be the VGA output of the 2504 that generates the un-sharpness. I have got several 2504 docking stations from the IT department to test and all attempts show the same unsharp picture on the LCD connected to the VGA port of any 2504. Recently a colleague got a new laptop and docking station. He also used DVI and VGA on the old setup and had no visible difference between the two monitors. His new setup is a different T but his new dock is also a 2504. Now he has clear difference between his monitors. He also tried several 2540 docks and cables but the difference is still present.
The unsharpness is not immediately present when just looking at a dual head setup. But after a while it becomes tiresome to look at text, specially black on white, on the monitor connected to the VGA port. There is a slight shadow on the right side of all letters. When looking at non-aliased fonts, they look as if aliased on the VGA connected monitor. Already aliased fonts tend to "smear" and I have the unpleasant feeling that my eyes are not focusing correctly.
My question is: Is there a different VGA DAC on the docking station, or are the analog signals just wired through from the laptop VGA DAC? Older IBM docks do not have this problem, we have a lot of them at work in dual head configuration with DVI + VGA to compare, and we only see this problem with the 2504.

VGA is an analogue signal... so it can be affected by the quality of DAC chip used by the GPU associated electronics, the quality of connectors on the vga out and dock (that is why good analgoue audio equipment use gold plated stuffs) and the quality of copper wire and shiedling used in the cable (i.e. Low Oxygen Content Copper wire).
The above is general description for all people to use <---- so please don't feel offended if i repeat something that is already said.
There is NO conversion electronics on the dock per se, they are just passthrough, so no conversion.
I guess the problem lies with improper shielding somewhere. I have the same problem with my T61/60 and dock and my T40,41,42,43 on five different docks.
So i have ended up using lenovo usb2dvi converter on T61 and have two dvi output and bypassed the vga altogether.

  • Clips from Project bin to source monitor causing video output to go out of sync(CS6 and CC)

Any footage I double-click or drag from the Project window to the Source monitor causes my video output to go out of sync. When I put the clips in the timeline, video goes back in sync and I'm able to view video output.  My monitors are connected to a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt(9.7.5) via component and HDMI. Is this normal behavior in Premiere or is there a setting to enable this? No issues doing this in FCP7(clips from Project window to Canvas).
Can someone with an I/O from AJA, Matrox, or Blackmagic please test this out for me. Thanks...

    Hi Joe,
How do you have your audio setup? Try the following.
    - Set your OS system sound to Built-in or Line out audio
    - Select Blackmagic for both Video and Audio in Preferences> Playback
    - Select System Default Input/Output from Preferences> Audio Hardware
    Hope this helps,
