Source monitor selective shortcuts disabled

Keyboard shortcuts for playing/moving between in and out points in the Source Monitor appear to have stopped working all of a sudden.
Shift I, Shift O, Ctl+shift spacebar and Ctl spacebar have no effect whatsoever any longer, although they work perfectly in the timeline/ Program Monitor.
I don't think I'm going mad, but surely they have worked - I've been creating subclips for the past two weeks, and they have become an essential part of my workflow (I think!!).
Is there a way to toggle them on/off that I've accidently triggered?
Please tell me I'm not imagining their functionality within the Source Monitor.
Thanks.
UPDATE:  This appears to be happening with "soft" subclips.  Even the right-click goto options are greyed out.
If I place original material in the source monitor, all functionality returns.
Has anyone discovered Ia way to overcome this 'limitation'?

Thanks for calling attention to this bug. With the amount of time I spent testing soft subclips, I don't know how I could've missed it, but clearly I did. A report is now on the books.
Workaround: Add the subclip into a sequence, then double-click it in the Timeline to load it in the Source Monitor. In my testing just now, the cited shortcuts work.

  • Add source monitor selection to timeline?

I want to select audio then mark the range in the timeline. Is there a way to get the selection or markers from the source monitor to appear in the timeline so that I can edit based on it?
I can note the time in the source window, and then manually duplicate the selection, but the time frame is way too coarse for me to use. I want to select a range of audio samples not somewhere unknown within a millisecond.

Oh. I mean that the audio is in the timeline at 0. For example, if I had selected 1 second in the source window, I want to playhead to be positioned at 1 second in the timeline.
But, the selection in the source window is something like 57357 audio samples. I want the playhead in the timeline to be at the same offset as 57357 audio samples (or, whatever the selection is that I have made in the source windows). Or, I want to be able to select at the level of audio samples in the timeline in some other way.

  • Premiere Pro keeps crashing when using overwrite (.) shortcut in Source Monitor

When editing a clip in the source monitor and then using the (.) key to overwrite the clip onto my timeline Premiere Pro keeps crashing. If I select the Timeline window and then press the (.) key it works fine, but if the Source Monitor is highlighted and I press (.) it crashes every time and shows these windows:
Premiere Pro has encountered an error.
    [/Volumes/BuildDisk/builds/mightykilt/shared/

It saves my current project as a copy, which is good, but I've now ended up with lots of copies of the same project as it keeps on crashing. In order to work I have to make sure that the Timeline is highlighted before I use the shortcut. It makes for very precarious and tense editing!

I'm using a MacBookPro 15", OS X 10.8.4 and editing footage filmed at 24fps 1920x1080 on my Canon 550D/T2i. All .MOV files.
I purchased my software from iSoftware.co.uk. I'm worried that could be the problem.
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thank you.

A crash with a very similar error message was fixed in the new CC release. The bug report in that case involved creating a multi-cam sequence, so it might not be directly related.
If you have a chance to download the CC trial, we'd be interested to know whether the crash remains in the new version.

  • Mark Clip - X shortcut doesn't work for some reason. Is there an easy way to mark a clip without going into Source Monitor?

    Hi guys,
I'm using Premiere Pro CC on Windows 8.1 Pro. The Mark Clip function - X shortcut key by default doesn't seem to work.
I know that if I go into Source Monitor I can mark the clip in there but WHY ? In the old day of CS5.5 I can mark a clip (not timeline) as quick indicator for frame / sound issue of a particular clip. One key press and I'm done.
So, is there an easy way to mark a clip in Premiere Pro CC without going into Source Monitor?
    Cheers!

Hi Mark and everyone looking to find the answer,
After experimenting, I figured out the answer. This applies for the latest version of Adobe Premiere Pro CC (as of 01-Sep-2014) ver 8.0.1 (build 21)
Context: You want to add a marker to a specific clip instead of a sequence but you can't seem to do it.
    Why?
        - X key (or Mark Clip as Premiere Pro CC calls it) doesn't add a Marker to a clip. What it does is using the clip you are selecting as reference for Mark In / Out of your current sequence.
        - M key (or Add Marker as Premiere Pro CC calls it) will add a marker to your clip.
       HOWEVER:
If you are not expanding your clip to see the wave form or clip thumbnail, the marker on the clip will not show up. It used to show up in CS5.5!!!!!! Why not in CC!!!?!
It will only add the marker to the clip you are selecting. Track targeting does not matter.
If you don't select any clip, it will add a marker to your sequence.
Example: (This is the same clip and sequence)
How it looks with marker added.
Track targeting does not matter - reference number 1
Current selected clip is is the key - reference number 2
        2.  How it looks with marker added but you can't see
        3.  How it looks if you don't select the clip and hit M
    Hope this help!
    Cheers!

  • Two trim selections in source monitor time ruler. (Premiere Pro CC2014)

I'm really confused by this apparent new feature, or glitch, in PP. I'm working on an old project that has been upgraded from CS6 through CC, and now to CC2014. Several of my clips have shifted to a different point in the source media, so the clip is still the same length on the timeline but contains a completely different part of the footage. When I double-click the clip in the time line to open it in the source monitor I get two trims on the time ruler like this:
I am absolutely confused by this, I've never seen it before. More importantly I don't seem to be able to relocate either of them independently to get the correct section of the footage into my cut, and I can't seem to delete one of them.
Is this something that's been caused by the upgrade, or is it a changed setting/preference in CC 2014. I haven't had this problem in any other project prior to installing 2014 earlier this week and now I'm hesitant to open any other projects in case it makes a mess of them too!

The blue part is the video the green part the audio (this has been always been in Premiere)
If you check Linked Selection (next to the wrench)  it probably will 'merge" when you double click on it.

  • No audio in source monitor

    Greetings.
I have imported an .mxf file Sony camera. The audio and video are good. I can see and hear the audio when I place clip in timeline. But when I place clip in source monitor I cannot hear any audio. It has got to be something simple. What is it? Thanks.

    Thanks Colin, That worked.
But yes, that is not only annoying... it is unacceptable. Seriously.
When you import a video file - you should be able to hear the audio. Period. If you want to mute tracks, then fine, mute them.... but by default, you should get full mix of audio.... then perhaps decide which tracks to disable. ..
But seriously... I now have to "select" track by track and can only listen to one track at a time? Then do this for each clip?  Yikes.
One work around.... would be to create a sequence -- of all the raw clips... and then work from that sequence.
I will definately join you in this bug report. Thanks.

  • Source Monitor - Huge audio issue

At first I thought I was going crazy... I was getting all audio on timeline but only one track in the source monitor.
Then found out that this was only the case with 2 track mono clips.
Why does the source monitor play back all tracks of a stereo clip but only track one of a 2 track mono clip?
I've got a stack of clips from a shoot which are interviews.... Question mic on track 2 Answer mic on track 1
Anyone got any idea how I utilise the source monitor if I can't hear audio.
I dont want to modify all clips to stereo in the bin and I certainly don't want to select different tracks each time via the display mode drop down.
Looks like I'll just be editing straight into the timeline.
    What a miss from adobe!

Why does the source monitor play back all tracks of a stereo clip but only track one of a 2 track mono clip?
Well, strictly speaking, Premiere isn't playing back all tracks of a stereo clip and only one track of a multi-mono clip, but rather, Premiere is playing back the first audio track of a clip, regardless of the channel mapping. To Premiere, a media clip with a stereo track has one audio track (not two), so that's why you hear both channels in that case.
But, to the crux of your question and lament: I agree. It's a pain, particularly when dealing with footage like P2 MXF that contains 2 or 4 mono tracks. Due to the way I shoot, I usually have my primary audio on track 2, so using a usual Source/Program editing practice is difficult. Sounds like your workflow and expectation is the same.
So until we get a way to select the audio track to be monitored from the Composite Video view (feature request: Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form), the workaround is to work in a sequence, or to switch to Audio view mode and then select the track you want to hear. There is a keyboard shortcut you can set to bring up the Audio view (I have that set to F4 and Composite Video to F3), but sadly, none exists to switch the monitor track. The track you select in Audio view is persistent in Composite Video view, but unfortunately, that setting/selection is not remember from clip to clip.
I've lamented this myself, but hadn't gotten around to putting together a solid feature request; I think I'll do that now, and hope you will too.
EDIT: sorry, missed you'd already said you don't want to toggle tracks. So... yeah... that's all there is...

  • How to open only one clip at a time in the source monitor?

Ok the answer to this question may be simple.. hopefully...
At the moment each time I open a clip in the source monitor it adds it to the dropdown list.
Fine... but I am opening and closing hundreds of clips in a day and after a while I noticed it seemed to be slowing down the whole PPCS5.5 system.
It appears that PP seems to be keeping each clip I open... active.
Is there a way to allow only one clip to be open at a time in the source monitor... other than having to close them all first??? (would be ideal if there was some kind of shortcut like shift-doubleclick)

SonyZ7's can record to compact flash cards as well as tape, so I generally log and transfer from the cards.
So I guess I should do a bit more research on workflow's in Pr

  • Video won't play in timeline or source monitor

I recently purchased a Canon HG10 camcorder and have been attempting to edit the AVCHD .mts files using Premiere Pro CS4 (4.2.1). However, I have been unable to play the video in either the timeline or source monitor. Both the video and audio will play for a fraction of a second and then stop. I thought it might be an issue with the .mts file so I converted it to several other formats (Quicktime, H.264, MPEG4, etc.) and I still can't get any video to play. I imported and tried playing other video, but to no avail. I can edit, scrub, export, apply effects, and do pretty much anything else - but I can not get it to play in the timeline. I do have Final Cut Express and if I convert the .mts file to Quicktime I can edit it, but I would like to be able to edit the native Canon AVCHD.
    Current system:
    iMac 10.6.4
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon X1600
    74 GB hard drive space
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Jason

    Jason,
The first thing that I would check would be your Playback Preferences. Please list your settings, and folk here can review them and possibly spot something simple.
Next, I would do one of two things, regarding your Catalyst drivers for you ATI/AMD card. If you do not have the latest driver, download and install it. If you DO have the latest Catalyst driver, keep it around in a safe folder, but download and install an earlier version. Cannot recall the exact numbers now, but a few users had to go back about three versions. Also, since those driver versions were listed in this forum, I'd bet that at least two more have been released. Going back a few months, it seems that there were 2 - 3 versions, that did not work well with some Adobe programs.
Though I have all nVidia cards, I keep drivers going back about 6 mos., as I never know when I might encounter an issue and need to roll-back.
Also, as the gaming market drives the video card business, and their drivers, it is possible that some gamer-only module has been added. That happened with nVidia drivers about a year ago. For a couple of versions, one had to manually disable a 3D and another gamer-only module. Later versions installed with these off, unless the user turned them on.
Last thought - check your OpenGL settings, and depending on your OS, check Hardware Acceleration. In your Catalyst console, check what your 3D settings are. You want to set any to "Let the application choose," or similar syntax.
Good luck, and hope that something there helps you.

  • Can I open a second Source Monitor for the audio track of a video?

I really dislike having to switch to the audio waveform in the Source Monitor pane when I want to tinker with a clip's audio track. I usually try to stay away from needing to use a panes drop down menu as much as possible. Is there a way to get this in a different window?
    Using CS6

You cant tinker with the audio track in the Source Monitor. Apart from IN and Out Point setting.
Normally one would expand the audio track in the time line...zoom in/out to suit and maybe use the tilde shortcut  key to view it all full screen.

  • Timeline to External / Source Monitor

I am presently migrating to CS5 Prod. Prem. Just recently installed all apps.
In Prem. Pro, How can I get the footage placed in the sequence timeline to gang to the Source Monitor Panel and/or output to my external monitor? From the source monitor panel, I can select the sequence, but when I manually scrub back and forth thru the sequence using the timeline there is no output to the external tv monitor, only to the desktop program monitor within the PP workspace.
Thanks in advance for the help. I'm sure I'll have many more questions. I'm migrating over from A/ FCS3.
    - John

no go... I can only output to the external monitor through the Source Monitor. When I try to turn off output from the program monitor, I just get a little dialog box saying Turn Off Dropped Frame Warning with a check box and okay button. My output seems to be locked to the Source monitor. I am able to bring up the dialog boxes you spoke of in the Program monitor.
I'm outputting thru a Blackmagic Intensity Pro HDMI/Component/Composit pci card. The card has it's own panel in System Preferences of the OS and is outputting thru HDMI to the external monitor. As I said, I'm able to output from the Source Monitor in PP, but not the Program Monitor in PP. The timeline seems locked to the Program monitor, Is there a way to link the timeline to the Source Monitor, instead of the Program Monitor?
    Thanks again,
    J.

  • Clips from Project bin to source monitor causing video output to go out of sync(CS6 and CC)

Any footage I double-click or drag from the Project window to the Source monitor causes my video output to go out of sync. When I put the clips in the timeline, video goes back in sync and I'm able to view video output.  My monitors are connected to a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt(9.7.5) via component and HDMI. Is this normal behavior in Premiere or is there a setting to enable this? No issues doing this in FCP7(clips from Project window to Canvas).
Can someone with an I/O from AJA, Matrox, or Blackmagic please test this out for me. Thanks...

    Hi Joe,
How do you have your audio setup? Try the following.
    - Set your OS system sound to Built-in or Line out audio
    - Select Blackmagic for both Video and Audio in Preferences> Playback
    - Select System Default Input/Output from Preferences> Audio Hardware
    Hope this helps,

  • Set default audio track for playback in Source monitor

So I'm an editor that is somewhat new to the profession and I am working on a project right now with close to 100 video clips in my project. Most of the clips have their audio recorded to track 2 but when I load the clips into the source window to find the footage asked for in my script there is no audio playback.
They play fine in the program monitor once placed in a timeline, because I have all the audio tracks are turned on until I do my mastering at the end of the project. To get audio playback in the source monitor I have to change the view option to audio waveform which shows a blank screen because there is no audio on track. I then go to the drop-down menu just below the video display and select track 2 at which point the audio waveform shows up and plays back fine. This isn't too arduous a process and isn't a great burden but it slows my workflow down considerably as I have to repeat the process for each new clip I load into the source monitor.
My question then is if there is anywhere in Premiere that I can set which audio track is the default audio playback track for clips loaded in the source monitor. I work on a lot of similar projects like this for the same client and they don't have the most rigorous standards for their shooters. This problem has come up before and will most assuredly arise again in the future so any tips/advice on how to fix this on my end would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

I'm not really sure.I don't do any shooting for the client and in fact don't have any contact with the shooters, we just do the post. They use a number of different freelance videographers all of whom have different equipment and procedures when it comes to formatting, orginization, etc.

  • Link sound and video in source monitor

    Hi,
I'm using CS3. I have a mpeg video clip and a wav sound file on the timeline. The video / audio is not multiplexed. They are linked on the timeline. What I'd like to do is link the video and audio and go into the source monitor with the material..   so I can edit subclips etc from source monitor and put into a new video layer on timeline.
When I put both video and soundfile into source panel , edit video, and drag onto timeline only the video goes to timeline.
Is there a way to link them in the source monitor so both video and sound can be edited to timeiline?
    Thanks
    Rod

    Rod,
I feel your pain. Many years ago, my cousin came to me to design a Web site for her trout ranch. Fine, no problem. I sent her the normal assignment list of questions: audience, their specific demographic, intent of Web site, history, services, etc., etc. Never got a thing back, but tons of e-mails on her ideas on how the site should look and the sites that it should link to. "OK, those are useful bits of info, but lets get back to the questions. I need those first." More sites to link to, and a couple of shreds of paper with ideas. "What's that on the bar napkins?" "Oh, that's the history of the ranch." I traveled to her ranch and shot for several days, and sent the select images on DVD for her to do a final edit. She sent those to Orvis, to use in a calender, without even credits! Luckily, I had not sent the chromes. She contacted me and asked if I had more stock shots, as Orvis wanted to save money on having someone shoot for them... Uh, not quite.
Finally got some useful ideas, and did a complete layout of the site. I kept pressing for the "Who We Are" material, and got more napkins and backs of envelopes with some real Joycean writings. I took all of that info to a copywriter friend, who owed me for some photoshoots. He worked for a few weeks, e-mailing me lists of questions. I FWD'ed those to cousin, and never got a reply. When he was done, I sent the copy to her - not even close. I asked her to write it all down in a TXT, or DOC file and send it to me. A few weeks later, I got legal sheet of lined paper with words that would have made Kafka ponder.
Still, I plugged along, and sent the complete layout. "Where's the canoe rental?" "No one ever mentioned canoe rentals." "Where's the horse boarding?" "What horse boarding? When did that get added?" On it went. I finally managed to do a mock-up of the site, which was now about 60 pages, and linked to over 300 sites around the globe. Well, now there was an espresso stand on the highway, a dog boarding concession and a half-dozen other additions. Plus, the interiors of all of the rooms had been redone, since I shot them. I built the changes in Photoshop, and "redecorated" each room, per the descriptions of those decorations.
Even then, the Who We Are was not right, and incomplete. After four months of work, I issued an ultimatum - I am done, until you get me the info requested in that first form, with a BTW - here's another copy. [Sounds a bit like Harm's 5th request for necessary info.]
A month elapsed, and then I got an e-mail. A friend of a friend had designed a wonderful site for her in trade-out. I went to the URL. It was a two pager with zero links to anything. It did have a Who We Are, but it read like Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Next e-mail was "would you be my Webmaster and update my site weekly?" My answer was that because I was so busy, I was not the right person for that job. I taught her Acrobat, and did add a few PDF pages for her, but that was it.
In the end, it was hard labor and little fun. The site was passable, but nothing like she stated was necessary. I do not know if she ever updated any of the PDF's, but highly doubt it. I never even got a thank you note from Orvis either. Loads of fun. Remember my comment in another thread on the "Three Reasons for Taking an Assignment?" Could have been fun, but it was not.
I wish you luck, as I have "been there - done that," and it ain't no fun.

  • Correct Time Stamp in Source Monitor  ?

I am viewing MTS files in the Source Monitor (CS5) and I can't figure out what the 'time' is telling me.  If I open the first file (00000.mts) the beginning time is 13:39:09:10.  I would have thought it would be 0 or something. . .  It's not the time I shot the video (the time is set - correctly - on the camera).
So, what is it?   What I want it to be is zero because in finding a part of a clip, what I have is the minutes/seconds that the part starts into the clip.  In other words, the part I want starts at 11:23 in file 0007.   Because clip 0007 starts at 14:23:53:25 (very odd that it starts on frame 25) I have to do math to figure out where to go in 0007 to find what I want.   It hurts.
So, what is that number trying to tell me?

It is Timecode, the Patron Saint of Video Production. Those numbers are absolute references to individual frames in a recorded video. Think of them as "addresses" to a particular frames. Most people actually want timecode
What it sounds like is you are looking for relative references to the beginning of a clip, e.g. 1 minutes 20 seconds in. Is this correct? If so, you can pretty quickly figure out the in and out point in your timecoded clip based on your relative references.
If you use the numeric keypad, you can press the "+" or "-" to move to a relative time. Let's say you want to start at 1 minute, 20 seconds into a clip. Load the clip into the Source Monitor, make sure the CTI is parked on the first frame, and type (without quote) "+1.20.0". You're telling Premiere to advance (that's the plus sign) 1 minute, 20 seconds, and 0 frames. When you hit Enter, the CTI will jump ahead that duration. Mark your in point, and repeat for the out point. If you know how long the duration of the selection is to be, you can just do that, e.g. 30 second or "+30.0", or you can return to the first frame and type in the relative time of the out point based on your notes.
    Does that help?
