Source of jerky iTunes video found!

I have finally located the problem of the jerky (1 to 2 frames per second) video that started after updating to iTunes7 and 7.0.1!
Dragging (copying) the file "ATIRadeon9700GLDriver.bundle" from system/library/extensions/ to the desktop and deleting it from the extensions folder (or else simply deleting it and then dragging it from the trash to the desktop) returns normal smooth video to non-H.264 mpeg video on my second generation iMac (ATI Radeon 9600). Unfortunately, this also makes Coverflow stop working with the message "iTunes is unable to browse album covers on this computer". I'm not sure what else will be disabled by moving this file.
Obviously, this is not a solution, or even a feasible workaround. Where can I get "good" ATI drivers? Is that even the problem? I went to the ATI site "https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&fold erID=27" and tried installing "macosx-ati-displays-4-5-7.dmg", but it didn't help. A fresh OSX install is not an option for me (and seems a bit like overkill, since I know exactly which file is causing the problem).

Update: I found a better fix!
The jerky playback in iTunes7 is caused by a conflict with the 3ivx D4 4.5.1 component found in the Library/Quicktime/ folder. Other components also seem to cause problems -- best to remove all 3rd party stuff and see if it helps (check the main library and the home library). Quitting iTunes and restarting is enough, no need to logout for results. No need to mess with the ATI bundle.

  • How to manage itunes video HD and SD versions ?

I'd like to figure this out...
When buying itunes movies that come in HD, both the HD and SD (for iphones) versions are downloaded. Both versions are located in the itunes media folder under that movies title/name. In the itunes movies list, only one icon is displayed. That one icon represents two movie versions, HD and SD in the one folder. When you play on the computer or appletv, the HD version is played. When syncing the movie to an iphone, the SD version is copied.
I'd like to know the trick to managing two different versions of a movie, the same movie, in itunes. One high quality and a second lower quality for iphone compatibility. And have both versions represented by only one movie icon in the itunes movies list.
Purchased HD movies from itunes already somehow manages this itself.
When I add my own video to my itunes library, I add one higher quality for appletv, and a lower quality of the same for the iphone.
Iphone will not accept higher quality appletv video. I can create a lower quality version, but when added to the library, it shows as a second listing in the itunes movies list.
I end up with two duplicated icons for those two movies. One higher quality I added to the library, and a second icon for the iphone version I added to the library.
I would like to package the two versions together under one icon. Like itunes HD purchases are managed.
I'd like to know the trick to change that to one icon representing the two versions, if possible. So that I could "package" two versions of the same movie and have only one movie icon displayed in the movies list.
Trying to figure out the trick itunes uses to package different versions, when purchasing movies that automatically come in two versions.
I know..i know, i could make one "universal" quality movie of that one movie, playable on both appletv and iphones, but I prefer manually creating two quality versions to retain the best video quality AND fit the big screen tv properly for the higher version. Universal quality movies work fine for the iphone, but look bad when played using appletv on a big screen.

    I came across this guide:
    http://www.m4.com/blog/noteworthy-geek-stuff/how-to-create-and-tag-hd-sd-dual-ve rsions-of-a-movie-for-itunes/
I found that you can skip the MetaX section completely, and still have success.
And as to  "STEP 3: Adding the ContentID tag", in the guide... way too messy.
You DO need to add a number (the "ContentID" tag), so I made up a little trick.
To keep all ContentID tags in my video different from others, I simply use the alphabet
where the number 1 is the first letter A, and 2 is B, 3 is C, and so on.
Then for the two movie formats in the two open SUBLER windows, after adding the same ContentID tag
to both windows, I entered the same number for the first 4  titles letters using the alphabet trick.
Example, the movie THE SHINNING, I used only the first four letters in the name "SHIN" then subsituted
the numbers 19 for S, 8 for H, 9 for I, 14 for N  to end up with the ContentID tag of 198914.
Enter this same number in the ContentID tag space for "BOTH" SUBLER windows.
They must be the same for the two movie versions.
So basically for the movie THE SHINNING (ripped from my DVD movie catalog),
I ripped first to appleTV file format. Then converted that to iphone format.
Ending up with two file formats of the same movie.
Then used SUBLER to open both files in separate SUBLER windows.
Then I needed to add the "NAME" tag and enter the movie title in both SUBLER windows.
I then added the ContentID tag in both SUBLER windows and entered my title number schemed 198914 for both versions.
PS.. Also be sure to add the same movie picture icon to both files in SUBLER.
If you need a icon picture for your movie, try searchig:
    http://www.albumart.org/index.php?srchkey=Girl+Group+Anthology&itempage=1&newsea rch=1&searchindex=Music
Then I followed the guide to mark the appletv version format as "HD" (check box under OTHER SETTINGS in SUBLER window) and make sure both are selected as "MOVIE" in the drop down.
In other words, BOTH movie versions in the two SUBLER windows MUST contain the same
tag, picture icon, all info duplicated exactly, EXCEPT... for check mark the appleTV version box as "HD".
Then save the two files (see the guide on how to save the file).
Last, add the two video files to your itunes library.
Both files should end up listed under ONE movie icon in your itunes movie library.
And display "HD SD" under the one single movie icon in itunes for your movie.
Keeping it simple, minimal tags, i.e. "NAME" , "ContentID" , "picture icon", and then
creating your own simple ContentID number, seems to do the job for basic DUAL
video listing in the itunes movie library.
When you then add video to your iphone, itunes knows to add the SD compatible version.
And your itunes movie library isn't all messy with duplicate listings for the same movie.

  • Questions regarding itunes/ipod + found potential bug (itunes 7 + 5G ipod)

I'd love to be proven wrong here.. but...
Okay I've got an iPod 60GB video model (5G) and using itunes 7.0.2 on the imac and powerbook...
now... my main storage point for music is the imac (so I automatically sync the ipod to itunes on the imac) and I like to take the ipod and powerbook with me to friend's places or what not.
I found it stupid to have two identical libraries on two of my computers, so I got rid of my music collection on the powerbook (as all of it is on the imac). Now.. the dillema here, or dillemas I should add...
    a) before I used to use automatic sync, I ticked "manual manage music and videos" and thought life was peachy.. until I was at a friend's place, with my laptop, and wanted him to have a listen to a couple of tracks from the ipod, so I plugged it in, fired up itunes and it worked... however!
(BUG RANT) The view mode settings keep reverting back to it's default when ever I plug the ipod back in again! as in "Show Browse" or cmd-B, which I want kept there when I listen to music, having to press cmd-B every time I want to scroll through my list is very f**ng annoying.
Also having to change it to manual management of music every time. ***? (END BUG RANT)
    b) So I decided to try the automatic synchronising method, but when it is in automatically sync, I can't browse my music on my powerbook's itunes, and it keeps asking me to synchronise with the itunes library on the powerbook, which is blank!
Can't there either be a 3rd party app which is like itunes in the sense you can browse/listen to the music on the ipod, or a simple method of management/maintenance when plugging in ipods to other computers without it synchronising with their libraries (for listening purposes only of course)
So.. folks... Apple tech support gurus... WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS!??!?!?!?? :\

You are on the right track!
+--the entire iTunes folder found in My Music+
This contains the itunes library database files (iTunes Library.itl which has metadata on ratings, play counts) and all the itunes library content files (Artist/Album, movies, etc.)
The lyrics are inside each songs' file.
The Artwork should also be in this folder.
    +-User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer+
    +-User Name\Local Settings\Apple Computer+
These include the backups you need for the ipod and apps data.
You don't need to deauthorize if you are simply reinstalling itunes. You only need to deauthorize if you are reinstalling Windows itself.
+--Can I copy the iTunes folder from the external HDD and paste it back into the same location after I recover my laptop+
    Yes
+if the version of iTunes is slightly different (I have 10.1.0.54)?+
If the new version is at least 10.1.0.54
It won't work to go backwards to an older version such as v9.0

  • Poor iTunes video quality

    Hi,
I just purchased an episode of Lost through iTunes because I missed the original airing on TV. When I try to play back the video on my iMac, the quality is garbage. The video is jerky, stops, and when it does run, it runs at about 10 frames per second.
It does this while in full screen mode, and also when running in windowed-mode.
There are no other applications running in the background, not even Dashboard is loaded up. I've tried repairing permissions and re-starting the computer. iTunes videos play back fine on my Mac Mini, but for the purpose of this Lost video, it needs to play back on the iMac.
I downloaded the 7.0.2 iTunes update (it was on 7.0.1), hoping it would eliminate this issue, but if anything it's worse since the update.
Any suggestions to make the video play back smooth? This computer has plenty of free hard drive space, and a gig of RAM. It's annoying that this computer cost what it did new, and now four years later can't play back a Quicktime video that I paid $1.99 for.
    Thanks,

    Macmenno,
    Thanks for the reply.
To be honest I didn't really look at the requirements for iTunes, I just assumed it would work haha. Thanks for pointing that out. I wouldn't think 200 MHz difference would cause it to run this poorly, but oh well.

  • ITunes Video Compared to DVD on MBP?

I want Scrubs season 5 on DVD. But season 4 comes out in October so who knows when season 5 will be out. It's available on iTunes but I am concerned about the quality. If I download the season, will it compare to DVD quality on my MBP? I found this website which definately makes me think it will be fine: http://homepage.mac.com/lesposen/blogwavestudio/LH20040822004609/LHA200510160027 25/#
How does the quality of an iTunes TV show download compare to DVD quality? And can I then burn my downloaded shows onto DVD?

    Jayhacker,
The iTunes videos are TV quality, not DVD quality. They will look great, although small, on your computer screen, and would look like broadcast TV played from a video iPod to TV, but they just don't have the bit-rate that a DVD would provide.
Still, I have never been disappointed with the quality on my computer, and I might even say that I prefer viewing shows on it to watching them on TV. Of course, catching a show on TV is free
Anything that you purchase from the iTunes Music Store is protected. This means that you can't transcode them, even using Quicktime Pro. You can drag them out of iTunes to a blank DVD to make copies for backup purposes, but you can't convert them to MPEG-2 (the DVD standard). In other words, burning a video DVD is out.
As far as I know, the only options for viewing the videos on a TV set is either via a video iPod, or by connecting your computer to your TV.

  • Location of "the source list" in iTunes

where is "the source list" in itunes so that I can manually manage my classic ipod

Devices doesn't show permanently in the source list. It is only visible when an external source such as your iPod or a CD is connected to your computer and has been recognised by iTunes: iPod 101: iTunes Initiation
Just to go over changing to manual again, you connect your iPod to the computer. When it appears in the source list it appears under the heading of Devices. When you click on it's icon the preference tabs are displayed in the main pane to the right. In the iPod Summary tab is the "Manually manage music and videos" check box. You check the box and click Apply:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • My Ipod does not show in source list in itunes

I have recently downloaded itunes 7.7 (previously using 7.1) - my ipod is no longer showing in the source list in itunes although I get the usual clunk clunk sound when I attach it to the PC.
I have tried to re-set unattached from the PC and attached to the PC to no avail.
The only thing that I can think to do is to uninstall the ipod software and itunes and re-install both - but I will have to get some CDs first as I have a lot of tunes in the itune library which will be lost if I delete itunes.
Can anyone suggest anything else which may help please??
    Thanks.

I am having a similar problem. I have done the "5 R's" and even had my iPod replaced with a new one by apple (suspecting they couldn't solve the problem). But even now, with a completely new iPod, Windows (Vista) recognizes the iPod (as it did previously), but iTunes does not. The iPod displays that it is connected, but does not appear in the iTunes source list! Then, as soon as I disconnect the iPod (as there's no other way) then suddenly it appears and several error messages come up saying: "Jarad's iPod cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found." !!! This is so fustrating!!!! Is there anyone out there who can help?

  • ITunes video playback stutter

Hello all, when I play a movie in fullscreen mode in iTunes on my 2011 iMac the playback stutters every four or five seconds, this only occurs in fullscreen mode, has anyone heard of this and are there any solutions, it's driving me crazy, thanks in advance

I am having this same problem.  Again I have a 2011 27" iMac running Lion.  The stutter or frame rate lag is only happening with iTunes videos when being watched in full screen mode.  However, it does not happen with every itunes video - only some.  Yet they can be HD, normal quality, rental or not rental - it is strange that there seems no reason why one video would stutter while another would not.  The lag occurs particularly when the shots are panning or moveing quickly.  I have not found a solution yet.  Could be a Lion problem i suspect as I did not have this issue with snow leopard.  Any one else got this issue?

  • ITunes video lagging horribly

I've been having this problem for awhile now: Whenever I try and play a video in iTunes - be it movie, TV show, music video, or video podcast - the video lags. The audio often works just fine, but the video is choppy, as if I'm watching a slideshow or a series of pictures rather than a video. Video works fine on the internet, and in the majority of my video players, it does as well. Please note that I am only trying to play iTunes bought videos in iTunes - the videos have not been tampered with in any way, so there should not be a problem there.
I am using a Windows XP Pentium 4 CPU, 1.50GHz. I have 512 MB of RAM on the computer. It is not a new computer by any means, but it is also not terribly old. I have had this problem with several other videos in unrelated video players, but that is due to a codec issue that refuses to be solved. Besides that, other videos work fine. It is only iTunes videos that are not playing.
Someone please help me figure out what's doing this or how I can fix it. Or if I can fix it, if it comes down to that, because this is getting seriously annoying.

Just updated iTunes to most recent version. Now I'm getting jerky video playback in BOTH iTunes and QT Pro (latest version). CPU use is very high but random; ditto with video playback (i.e., doesn't hang up on the same scene/time).
I had this issue a little over a year ago after updating iTunes to the then latest version. Got nowhere with Apple's "Service" texts. I played around with configs for a while and also re-installed iTunes. It has worked fine until yesterday (same symptoms as last time). As for the past "fix": nothing I can hang a hat on. Methinks Apple updated the version I re-installed with (tho' the version # was unchanged).

  • ITunes video jumping

Just recently bought a new Dell. 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate, more than adequate hardware to handle video (3.4ghz i7; 16 gig ram; Radeon HD 6770; 7200 rpm hd; 24 inch monitor at 1920x1200, etc etc). This is replacing a five year old Macbook Pro which has no trouble playing my content, including 1080p.
The Dell has constant problems when playing iTunes video. Video will play fine for a little while then the picture will freeze while audio continues. Sometimes it's just a brief skip, sometimes it freezes for a few seconds then the video will move fast to get back in sync with the sound. Sometimes it will do this frequently, other times just a few little jumps throughout a show.
This happens on tv shows and movies, all definitions: SD, 720p, and 1080p (I'm also getting the 1080p warning many others have mentioned, that the video is too large for this computer, even though it goes ahead to play the video; this is an unrelated problem). Doesn't really seem to matter whether I'm playing SD or HD, it freezes and jumps on all of them.
I've fiddled with various settings, including hard drive settings, turning off background services, etc, but nothing seems to make any difference.
As I say, this is a new computer (a couple weeks old now) and I've had the problem from the start. I've done quite a bit of googling but haven't found anything that might address the issue.
The issue is quite aggravating and I've not made any progress fixing it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

So iTunes only runs 32 bit; the 64 bit installs related components in their 64 bit forms, so what I'm seeing is normal. Something else is causing my video problem. Still no clue what.

  • Typical Resolution of iTunes Videos???

I recently purchased some software to convert DVD (and other video content) to iPod/iPhone-compatible format and I wanted to know if anybody knows what the typical video bit rate is for most iTunes videos so that I can convert my videos to be of a similar quality? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Macs,
I would still check this out and one answer might be that due to the large amount of space a video takes on a computer etc. the quality of a downloaded video is not the same as one on a DVD from the studio. Similiar to a photo with the number of megapixels the size of the photo in terms of KB or MB grows with quality. This is why .mac mail shrinks a photo file to email it. To have a downloadable video the quality of a movie DVD today would take 8 hours to down load and about half of the space on that 80GB IPod. How good is your 42" TV? Also make sure you have good cables made for digital and the same for your surge protector? Keep your ITV receipt. Many a glicth was found in an Apple product release and you may have to have the machine updated, exchanged or blessed. Apple will cover it. A hassle to mail in or what ever but they do cover with RECEIPT. Try kicking your TV if noting else works. This must help, people have been doing since the TV came out. (LOL) Bye Macs!

  • Are you having iTunes video playback problems?

Do you have iTunes Store-bought videos whose playback is terrible, all choppy and full of freezes while playing back in iTunes?
Have you copied one of those iTunes videos to a thumb drive and had it play back perfectly?
This problem is not fixed by any of the Quicktime adjustments that Apple suggests on their "how to fix video playback issues" page, and, aside from this video playback issue, iTunes is working fine on my machine. As I said, the videos work fine, too, if played from a thumb drive instead of the hard drive.
This has been going on for weeks, and people have been posting about it here on the forum, but, to my knowledge, there's no fix. Just silence.
It might be useful if people who are seeing this problem post some information about their systems. For all I know, all of us who are seeing this problem have one particular vendor's computer.
The computer I am having this problem with is a new HP laptop that came with Vista. This one:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c00846935&cc=us&dlc=e n&lc=en&jumpid=regR1002USEN
    1.6 GHz AMD Turion ™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-52

    2048MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 (UMA)
    120GB 5400RPM (SATA)
I think the problem has to do with SATA, but I don't really know, except that my computer has it and I am able to play these videos perfectly from a thumb drive but not the SATA hard drive.
If you are having this problem, please consider posting your computer's info. Thanks.
HP Pavilion Entertainment PC   Other OS   Vista

OK, I figured it out... I too have a dv6000 with Vista and I have been trying to fix this terrible itunes video playback thing and this is what I found. For whatever reason the NVidia driver in the dv series doesn't play nice with Vista. They say that they are looking into it but have no response other than that. Somehow the data from the hard drive isn't fast enough. So, reading this I figured that if that REALLY is the problem that I could use a external drive and have the videos come from there, and Voila!! It works like a charm, no skipping, no stalling, no more blue screens. I hope this is helpful, I know what a pain this can be.
ALSO, apparently some think that you can't watch itunes video while using Vista's "ReadyBoost". I haven't had that issue personally, but I have seen a lot that have who disabled it and had it work fine.
Let me know if this works for everyone else.

Hello can some please help I am trying to watch my HBO go on my apple tv I have sound no picture. I can watch my iTunes videos and youtube on my airplay with my ipad and everything is updated so I know it works. But not on HBO go, Max go, showtime go.

The latest update for HBO GO does allow for AirPlay on Apple TV - sound and video - but only on devices running iOS 6 and Apple TV running 5.1.1 or later - according to the app description.
