South Africa's concerns

As you know Blackberry is a huge hit in our country and people are willing to spend lots of money to get it. I've conducted a mini survey amongst the people I know who use Blackberries and I must say I am appalled at the findings, so much so that I believe RIM is deliberately bringing and selling us "factory faults" or "blackberry rejects". You may know this but Blackberries are very expensive in our country and with the amount of money we pay we expect high quality and services from RIM (non negotiable) but in turn we get abused and ignored for our concerns:
1: How can a BRAND NEW handheld randomly freeze which would require a reboot?
2: The phone's response is too slow to the point where one gives up on whatever they wanted to do on it.
3: How does a phone freeze during a reboot which requires another reboot? We don't have time for this.
4: Our track pads or track balls wear off in no time after buying it
5: Our chargers seem to have been manufactured by animals cause they break so easily its baffling
6: Not forgetting our Headsets which don't last a week
7: Sometimes the phone switches off involuntarily
8: The phones fall apart in no time
9: The battery life is atrocious
10: The screen randomly turns white with no explanation
These are some of the problems we encounter with our phones and that's enough reason to believe that we're being sold rejects for phones. It will be in your best interest to address this issue as soon as possible.

1 RIM does not make all the apps, some times a dev makes a mistake and the app can hang.
2 + 3 This is a computer and like all computers you have limits which can be reached. I will offer some help on this below
4 I have had a trackpad for 4 years and never had this issue. do you leave it in the sun often?
5 Yes hey are fragile and need to be used gently, my son has broken a few on his tablet which is the same type of micro USB end
6 So you lose your head set and hblame RIM for it?
7 need to dig further for the issue on that below
8 we have over 100 users and if you abuse it, it will fall apart. mest thing to do is get a case or holster for it
9 This could be from a rougue app or GPS app running all the time
10 I have seen this happen on mine if it gets real hot, once cooled off it fine after.
now for slowness and finding a rouge app
Try a Battery pull please, with the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery 15 seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot device. This will clear all cache like rebooting a PC. Then try again and see if your problem persists.
A media card full of songs and pictures will take a long time to generate the thumbnails and song playlist, possibly making it slow up first use.
On device go to Options, Device, Application Management is a great way to see what your apps are doing with your CPU usage on Smartphone. Just slide top bar to CPU and see what is going on. Also touch the CPU menu to see other time variables. I found out that an app was eating away CPU cycles on mine
Disable Compression on media card? go to Options, Device, Storage
using a custom theme? try it for a day the factory default one to rule out your theme
remember the esc key closes most apps, except for GPS and some chat clients. the other apps need to use menu and then exit or close. The farthest key to the right is a home key and does not close any apps per se but will end calls.

  • South Africa App Store REALLY *****??

What is going on with the South Africa App Store?
There is no DRM on apps, so there is no reason that we cannot have exactly the same apps as the rest of the world.
But the No.1 rated app in the South Africa App store is KOI POND??
    and NO GAMES WHATSOEVER?
    <Edited by Moderator>

I agree, would Vodacom have any influence over that?
I still think its poor, if I can buy games on my PS3 and Steam and many other online platforms why not on Itunes?
It all just seems like a poor effort from Apple. Possibly a "couldn't care less" attitude.
I bought my first iPod because of the lure of buying music via iTunes, felt like I'd been conned when I actually installed it.
Got excited about the iPod games... (no DRM there right?) again sorry for me..
Guess I should have been already holding my ankles when I bought the iPhone to the lure of awesome games and phone thats also an iPod.
Imagine, I thought, waking up to my own custom play list in the morning...
Little did I know: its either a phone or an iPod, not both. You want a music Ring tone? SUCKER!!!! No music iTunes store in SA means NO MUSIC RING TONES FOR YOU!
So what that you have four of your favorite CD's right on the phone.
    No sms forwarding either (why???)
and NO COOL GAMES! let alone any useful apps.
Here are some of my favorites:
*Australian Post Codes* ( Saves me having to memorize them )
    *Point of Interest* (in Germany)
Delight(ful) (Where else would I get the kitchen utensils I import?)
Staumelder ( I just love Germain writing, I just can't help but stare ate the application description in wonder!)
*iBUS-Portland, OR* ( who wouldn't use that? AND its FREE)
I could go on and on, without even being able to list the ones that display as little blocks on my screen, I assume because I am in the wrong country.
But then I know I'm in the wrong country.... as far as iTunes and Apple are concerned anyway.
Since my first post was censored, I will say it again in a nice way:
Pretty please Apple, pay some attention to the (very) poor state of your iTunes SA Store,

  • I have a Macbook Air purchased in 2011 in the US.  I am traveling in South Africa and am unsure if I need a step down voltage converter before I plug my laptop into the wall to charge it (using an outlet adapter).  Am I ok to just plug in?

So standard electrical output from wall outlets in the US is 110V - 120V, and standard output from wall outlets in South Africa is 220V - 240V.  In SA I know I can plug in an iPhone using the iPhone charging cable and it will automatically step down the voltage, thus preventing my phone from overheating.  I cannot plug in a hairdryer or flat iron without step down voltage converter in SA.  Can I use the charger that came with my US 2011 Macbook Air and plug into a wall outlet in South Africa or do I need to purchase a step down voltage converter in order to charge my laptop while in SA?

You only need a plug adaptor as long as the voltage is between 100 and 240 volts.

You have to be in a country to use its store - you will need to be in the US and have a US billing address on your account to be able to use the US store (that applies to buying and redownloading).
You can use iTunes Match in South Africa, do you not have a backup copy of all of your US iTunes purchases so that you can subscribe to it and upload those that aren't in the South African store to it ?

  • Can I use the same power charger in another country (South Africa) and just but a socket adapter?

I am moving to South Africa from the US for a year and want to know if I can use the same power charger in South Africa and just but a socket adapter or do I need to get a new power charger for S.A.?

    Hi,
Nowadays laptop chargers can be used for normal electricity around the world (110V to 250V). All we need is a small plug adapter similar the the ones we use to travel overseas. Most electrical shops, travel agents and airports ... sell them.

  • Got an iPhone 3G, but can't use most of the features in South Africa-HELP!

    Hi there.
I got my iPhone about 4-5 months ago in South Africa. I love the hardware, I love the way it looks, what you can do with it, etc. But there's one thing I find really really annoying, and that is the fact that I can't use the phone features that users in other countries have access to.
No, I haven't run into any technical problems.
The problem is that we have hardly anything available in our iTunes store. I invite you to switch your iTunes browser to the South Africa store and check it out... Yup, that's right, we have no music, movies, TV shows, podcasts or audiobooks. So what do we have? Some apps... yep some, but from the looks of it a greatly reduced list. Many apps I've found links to on the net, which people recommended, are simply not in our store. Even free apps, for example Google Earth.
But the most glaring omission is the Games category... yep, not a single game available to South African users.
So, to get an iPhone here requires a 2 year contract and another $300 on top of that for the 8GB version, so it surely isn't cheap... and yet I can't even make a custom ringtone because only music downloaded from the iTunes store can be used... I could do that on my very first Nokia phone which was a dinosaur w.r.t. technology compared to the iPhone.
    I honestly don't understand it...
So, what help do I need?
I need to find out who I can contact at Apple to reason with regarding the content of our iTunes store. I find it unacceptable that people who hack their phones have a FAR better experience than people who do the right thing. So, if you work at Apple and read this or you know someone at Apple that could perhaps help me find the correct person/people to talk to about this, then please please send me a mail with the appropriate details. My email address is [email protected] (yes, I'll even post my email address on a public forum )
I don't think I am being unreasonable to expect a good level of service for a high end product, and at this point I am really unhappy with the service. Not the customer support etc, in fact the people I've had contact with are helpful, except that they cannot provide me with the information I need.
If you can help, then thank you very much.
    Take care.
    - Emile

    Hi there.
Thank you neuroanatomist for the info on creating a ringtone. I'll try it.
I should perhaps have mentioned that I have tried all the official channels, including contacting support and sending feedback over the last couple of months. The support people sympathise but can't really help me and I haven't received anything w.r.t. the feedback I have sent, more than once.
I'm now turning to the other users in the hope that someone can get me into contact with a person/people inside Apple that might be able to shed more light on this.
I've already contacted our local distributors and my mobile phone provider and they have told me that it is Apple and only Apple who decide what is available in the store.
W.r.t. licensing etc, I suspect that there may be some legalities involved here, however it's not like we are on a different planet - we get the same DVDs and movies and TV programs here as everywhere else - just not on the iTunes store... So once again everything points back to Apple and not to local laws. As far as I know our laws w.r.t. media are pretty standard and mostly based on UK law, but I am no legal expert.
I would even be happy to get a "we know it's not great, we're working on it", or a "it may take some time, but hang in there" ... but I haven't even been able to get that... which is extremely frustrating.
    Take care,
    Emile.

  • Lack of music/apps in South Africa

I know this topic has been discussed before, yet there never seems to be a satisfactory answer.
    http://www.thyon.com/blog-entry/items/apples-lack-of-games-music-movies-tv-in-so uth-africa.html
The lack of availability of music, games and other apps on the iTunes store in South Africa makes no sense. Does anyone know the correct channels an individual would have to follow to make this aware to the higher ups at Apple? I know it wouldn't be difficult at all to get a large number of South Africans behind this change. Having music available for purchase on the iTunes store would be massive here, and this lack of availability does not seem to be caused by South African laws, but rather a lack of action from Apple. This issue seems to have been ongoing for years now.
I don't think wanting to spend money to purchase music and games legally should be such a problem for Apple to remedy.
Any ideas as to how we could tackle this would be awesome!

Its not worth for Music at all.
You cant shuffle / play the next song / forward the song until you tap the screen to unlock the auto lock. (obviously we can set the autolock off)
Music in Play, iPhone is in standby (screen off by autolock or whatever), how do u forward the song ? Nothing provided
You cant jump to next song....Unnnhhh
    Way outs most welcome...
Even in lock mode, double click the home button - you'll get a volume control, a pause/play button and a reverse and forward button.
All explained in the iPhone manual.

  • Hi, I am planning a trip to South Africa (I live in Canada) and would like to know if I'll be able to use my Ipad there and what do I need to do to be able to have wi-fi or 4g access?  Anybody can help me?

    Hi,
I am planning a trip to South Africa in Nov/Dec.  I live in Winnipeg Canada and own an Ipad wi-fi cellular.  I would like to know if it is easy once in South Africa to use my device the way it is (i.e. with its existing SIM card etc).  Or do I need to acquire a different SIM card?  Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there?  Also if I need a different SIM card where does one go to get one in South Africa?   I have never travelled anywhere other than across Canada with my ipad (I am a fairly recent owner of such a device) and could use some help as to the best way to be able to use my machine in South Africa safely efficiently and at a reasonable cost.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there?
Check with your carrier about roaming charges.  They are usually prohibitive.  Best to get a local SIM.

  • CMYK settings in Photoshop cc (2014) for Print in South Africa

I am new to photoshop and print and need to know what CMYK settings are best for printing purposes in south Africa. I am using Photoshop cc (2014) Latest update. On Mac.  Project is aimed at a poster (420mm x 594mm) - roughly street pole size.  Thanks!!

You should take advice from your print provider. They should know which CMYK settings are right for their printer/press, ink and paper, according to the task. They may recommend RGB with a good working space. In any case, none of it is any use to you unless you have a calibrated monitor.

  • Why is the ITunes Store in South Africa so limited

why is the ITunes Store in South Africa so limited

Apple can only sell content where the rights-holders grant them licenses to sell it (and in some cases a country's laws also limit things). If there is a particular item that is not currently available that you would like to be able to download then you try requesting that it be added, but unless the rights-holder agrees to it then Apple won't be able to sell it there : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html
For music you could check to see if its available on other music purchase downloads sites that you have access to (or if it's available as a CD then you could buy that and copy it via your computer's iTunes).
For ebooks there are other ebook apps/stores where it might be available e.g. Amazon/Kindle, Nook, Kobo etc

  • ITunes Store South Africa

Hi all. South Africa is quickly joining the rest of the world with it's addiction to Apple products. Our iTunes store only allows App purchases, no music, no movies. There may be a rights issue with Music. But I really want to set something up for video, so I can install more Apple TVs and allow clients to buy movies.
    What can I do?
    Regards

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do, at least as regards the iTunes Store. Apple has apparently not been able to negotiate rights to sell videos and movies in your country, so you'll have to look for other sources for videos and movies and hope that they're in a format that can either be played directly on the Apple TV or converted appropriately (very unlikely, since all other download stores I've seen that sell movies have copy protection not compatible with Apple's products, but you can look).
    Regards.
