Space after showing up in my Indesign dock

Hi- I would swear money that I have had the little Space before and after menu (like the ones on the Paragraph pallette) show up on my Indesign dock. Am I crazy?

I've been having this problem on and off since I started making short training videos at my job in January 2011, except in our case, we are not regularly importing photos through iPhoto but dropping .PNG or .JPG slides exported from Keynote into iMovie '11 from the Finder.  iMovie will randomly either show the photo in the viewer as just a black frame or it will not display the previous image in the viewer.  When rendered out, I've noticed that it will also randomly render completely fine or display a black image where that photo should be (typically, if it was a black frame in the viewer, it will render as such, but if it just displays the previous image, it will render fine --- weird).  It doesn't happen all the time and it can happen to one Keynote slide but not the other, even when they are no different in size (maybe a word or sentence changed).
I have tried many things: deleting the .plist (didn't work any time it was tried), importing into iPhoto and then into iMovie (sometimes), renaming the file and then bringing it back into iMovie via the Finder (sometimes), reducing the file size (once, maybe), deleting the project (didn't work any time it was tried), renaming the project (nope), duplicating the project (nope), fix permissions (nope).
Anyhow, it is very frustrating because it is so random.  I can do one whole project without a problem and then the next project can give me nothing but fits.  In those cases, I usually try one or more of the things in the list above until something works for that photo.  We reguarly keep the machine up to date (except that we are still on Snow Leopard) and cleaned up.  We also use Keynote slide sizes that match the final iMovie export size (16:9 versus 4:3, for instance).
I scour the internet everytime it happens so I hope somebody finds a fix or the bug gets fixed by Apple...

  • How do I remove extra space after an image in an ePub created with InDesign?

I've designed more than a dozen ebooks with InDesign and have recently been having problems with the spacing after images, both images that are anchored in the text or stand-alone and exported through the Articles Panel. Following are a few details:
    • In the Object Export Settings, I have the vertical spacing set to 0 both before and after the images and no breaks added.
    • In the Export panel, I do not have any vertical spacing applied to images.
    • I do not have any Object Style settings applied.
    • It doesn't seem to matter if I anchor the image into the text or have it as a stand-alone image in the Articles Panel with the caption after it in a separate text box, also in the Articles Panel.
    • I broke down the ePub into an html file and did not see any div or span classes that were different between images that are showing correctly vs. incorrectly.
    • Extra space appears in both iBooks on my computer, as well as on my iPad.
    • I converted to a mobi file for the Kindle and the space wasn't there.
See attached screen shot. There shouldn't be that big gap between the image and the orange caption.
Any help or suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I've tried everything I can think of with the same results over and over!

Yes. That is the technique I traditionally use to drop an image into text. I even cut and pasted again as you suggested with the same result. Trust me, this is driving me nuts. I'm not doing anything different than before, but my results are different, even within the same document. I'll attach a few examples, all from this same document.

  • Free space not showing after shrinking BootCamp Partition

I gave a lot of space for the windows 8 bootcamp partition because I thought I am going to install Lots of stuff on it.
After 3 months I found out that my lion partition is almost full!  And I have 100 GB of free (Unused) partition on my bootcamp partition.
So I shrunk my bootcamp partition (in windows) by 60 GB.  I plan to expand my lion partition in OSX so then I restarted my mac.
Next I went to disk Utility and found out that I can't expand my lion partition with the free space.  Until then I realized that lion and windows have different file systems (oops.)  so I decided to expand my windows partition back to normal.
Then I went back in windows and found out that the free space is not showing in disk management!  What should I do next??
The free space is showing on top but when I right-click the windows partition the "Extend volume" option is greyed out.
PS I dont care about the mac partition now.  Did some cleaning with CCleaner and freed 10 GB

you should have asked first to get some ideas? I would have recommended Paragon CampTuneX which is designed to resize those partitions for you.
You want to have 20-30GB free space for any OS. If you were using an SSD, at least that much or even more.
I have no idea if iPartition or gpart can help you now.

  • Space after in one style affecting the style before it

I have bit of text like this:
    Bold head
    regular body
when I add space after to the regular body style, it has the effect of adding space after the Bold head, but when I directly apply space after using the Control bar, this doesn't happen!
my regular body style has no space before.
Can anyone see why space after in one style would appear to affect the previous style.
when I say "previous" and "before" I mean in the order they appear relative to each other.
    thank you!
    John

No, there are no manual overrides. I tested with a manual formatting just as an experiment, but then removed it immediately afterward.
InDesign as with many other programs will indicate a modified style with a little "+"  None of my text shows this + sign next to their styles.
    Thank you!

  • External HD won't free-up space after deleting files

Hello. My old Maxtor 500 Gb external hard-drive won't free-up any space after deleting many, many files. I'm using a late 2009 iMac i5 desktop with Snow Leopard. I had 6 Time Machine backups of my old MacBook Pro on the drive - each taking up roughly 70-80 Gb of space. I deleted 3 of the Time Machine backups as they were close enough in date to other backups so I wasn't going to lose any data. This should have freed up more than 200 Gb of space on the external hard drive. However, the hard drive still shows having only 10 Gb of space available. I deleted the Trash from the Dock. The Trash is empty. I unmounted the hard drive, turned it off and reconnected it. I restarted the computer. Still no change. Please help me. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions-
Are you using FileVault? If so, you have to log out or restart in order for the disk space to be reclaimed.

  • "Space After" Between Paragraphs

    Hi,
Is there a way in InDesign to set "Space After" and "Space Before" like you can in Quark?
I tried to look in all of the menus and couldn't find anything. It's probably there, just can't find it yet.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

The one on the left is space before, the one ont he right is space after. It's the same field whether you access it through the control panel or the paragaph panel. Note that the control panel is in paragraph mode, not character mode (In CS3 or CS4 the control panel may show these controls in either mode, depending on screen size and customizations, but they'll always be there in paragraph mode unless you've tuned them off).

  • Show ALL open windows in dock?

I'm a recent convert from Windows to Mac and one of the things that's completely driving me nutts is that I work with many windows open all day long, constantly switching back and forth and in Windows this was simple, EVERY window I had running had a space / button (whatever) in the taskbar, so when I switched back and forth all I had to do was a simple click on the window space in the task bar and poof, I was back in that window.
In OSX I'm finding this is not the case and it's driving me BONKERS!
I'm now having to constantly minimize the windows I'm in, or do the mission control thing, to get back to a window...just a pain in the butt when I need to switch back and forth constantly all day long.
Is there anyway to set OSX to behave the same way windows does in this manner?
I know it shows the APPLICATION in the dock, but it doesn't seem to show all windows for a given application...?
    Thanks in advance!

Actually, ultimately this is not a solution for me. Been doing it since you recommended it but here's the problem.
I usually work with 3-4 browser windows open, often 1-2 of those are "pop-ups" from other browser windows (for databases I work in), then Outlook (2011 Mac version). When working with emails I'm usually pulling information from browsers and copying/pasting into emails, or links, or something...some sort of information (I use the clipboard CONSTANTLY) and in Windows, a single click on the button for the window I want back into focus and I'm there. In OSX, hold option, click, hold, mouse up to selection click again...
See the difference? Quick single one handed click and I'm done in Windows, in OSX it's 5 steps with two hands...
Not nearly as easy/fluid...there's got to be a way, or a third party app or something to do this?

  • How can I maintain multiple white spaces in a PDF written from InDesign?

I need to have 2 white spaces maintained (within a part #) in the PDF I write, but when I open in Acrobat it converts it to one space.
I've tried word spaces, set spaces and applying "no color" to a placeholder character and nothing is working!
    Any ideas or suggestions?

I am talking about normal white space. Multiple fixed widt spaces are not a problem. How the space is handled in a PDF depends on how it is created.

It may not be a great idea to use multiple spaces, but it certainly is not prohibited and sometimes is necessary -- you might want a 2em space, or a thin space before and after a tab you underline in a form.
I'm able to select the multiple spaces just fine in Acrobat 9 using the text touch-up tool.

  • Space after Paragraph: How much picas equal a blank line in Garamond Regular 7.5?

I'm using Indesign CC and  would like to add a blank line after every paragraph in my document. I found out how to do that, but the only unit I'm offered is picas. I could probably switch to inches, but that doesn't really help me. My main text is written in Garamond Regular font size 7.5 and I would like to have blank space after each paragraph equal to a blank line written in that font with that size. How do if find out much large a blank line with those font settings is? I guessed and it seems to be equal to 0p7, but it would be great if I could do that without guessing blindly. I'm glad for any help.

I am not sure to understand.  Garamond (or any other typeface) 7.5 equals to… 7.5 pts. But the size of a typeface is measured from ascender to descender, so it does not give you an accurate idea of the real height of the line. But leading is measured from baseline to baseline and this corresponds to the measure you are looking for. Once again, you need to know the leading value and you have to enter this value for the space after.
And 1 pica is equal to 12 pts.

  • Getting blank space after paragraph in RTF template

    Hi there,
Thanks so much for all your help for your help.
I am running into one issue in RTF template, wanted to share with you to get any input on this. I have paragraph and Idid put in table at the top and there is xml tag that gives names after that paragraph. but I get blank spaces after paragraph and it shows names from that xml tag.
I tried to remove spaces by deleting between pargraph and xml tag<name> , still i get blank page between paragraph text and names.
Can anyone help me or point me to get it resolved that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Varma for your prompt response and your time on this. I am still trying to get any other options to get this done as that is the requirement and with that blank page looks not fully satisfied for users and am trying any other ways to do implement this..
That's the reason I thought of putting this post again to get more inputs that may have.
Can anyone put some light onthis.
    Thanks a lot..

  • Double space after apostrophe in iMessage

Ever since I updated to Mavericks, iMessage on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) adds a double space after I use an apostrophe! It also doesn't save my background color preference (but it does save font color, font, and other user's font and color). It only shows up for me, not for the person I send the message to.
    It looks like this:

    Hi,
The Original Poster newer came back with any more info on the subject.
This also left her Balloon (or Background) colour unresolved as well.
In Messages 8 (Mavericks) the Smiley function now uses the Emoji font to create the Smilies.
In iChat versions and Messages 7 you could show the Smiley drop down and mousing over the Smilies would reveal the text keystrokes that would be needed to create it if typing them.
This does not happen with the Emoji Font.
However most of the icons are created by double character info which may mean a keystroke might just be invoking it.
Playing with these settings may provide something.

  • Creating Space after a Paragraph Style

Okay, all, this may sound weird. All I want to do in CS4 is have an extra 4 pt of space after a particular paragraph style. Specifically, my paragraph style, Body Text, already has "space after" specified at 3 pt. Fine. But, for example, when I have three paragraphs of just this style, I want the three paragraphs separated by an additional 4 pt of space. (There is no consistency in documents when this situation occurs.)
At first, I thought it might be possible to do this via a nested character style. Nope. Back in FrameMaker, I used to do this manually, whenever I wanted extra space. My trainers would add paragraph tags (ugh).
    Still a newbie...
    Thanks!
    Lizbeth

    Kenneth C. Benson wrote:
Maybe I'm really missing your meaning here. When I override a style setting to get more space below, I add space below the *paragraph*. I don't adjust anything about the last line. This is no different in Framemaker. In Framemaker, you can add space above or below a paragraph, either as part of a style (what FM calls a "format") or as a style override. You don't "adjust the last line of a paragraph" in either program.
There's one important difference between FrameMaker's paragraph
spacing and most other DTP or WP tools: Space between FM paragraphs is
NOT ADDITIVE. Space below a paragraph is not added to space above the
following paragraph. In FM, the larger space wins. (I think Ventura
has this feature also, or perhaps has the option for additive or
    larger-one-wins.)
If the issue is to make inter-paragraph spacing work non-additively
like FM, please file a feature request for this as an option, at:
    www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
EDIT: The forum was unavailable for a while, and my email response was bounced. By the time I discovered the rejected mail, I saw Lizbeth's mention of having used Based-on paragraph styles. Probably the based-on style caused the mysterious behavior. The based-on property style information is only visible in the define/modify style dialog box. I'm going to enter a feature request for an indicator for the based-on property that will appears wherever a style's name appears, and, if possible, displays the name of the based on paragraph, character, and object style. Master pages do show the based-on master letter on the page icons in the pages panel, but they lose their own letter. I'll also ask for this feature.

  • Using baseline grid and "space after" for paragraph formatting

I'm using InDesign CC on a MacBook Pro Retina. I'm designing a document and want to use a baseline grid to align text. I also want to use the "space after" option in defining a paragraph style. I'm using 10 point type on 15 point leading. The "space after" is defined as 7.5 points.
If I try apply both the baseline grid alignment and the "space after" specification, I essentially lose my defined 7.5 pt "space after" to a much larger space because the first line of the next paragraph sinks to the baseline grid line below it. I end up essentially with 22.5 pt instead of 7.5 pt.
Are these two functions incompatible or is there a way around this that I don't know about?
    Thanks for any advice.

There's no way around it. Best is to calculate your various leading,
space before, and space after values to make sure everything falls on a
baseline. That way you avoid having to rely on "Align to baseline." You
may also want to turn on "skip by leading" in Preferences>Composition if
you've got graphics with text wrap in them.
