Space bar leaves ghost spaces after reboot???

This is STRANGE.
Not sure if this is the right forum thread.
I have a USB Apple Keyboard (aluminum) I bought in March 2009 for my MBP 15" (C2D, late 2006, 2.33MhZ). It has worked fabulously (I had to get used to it; I used to like the MBP keyboard for typing, but now I hate it!). Suddenly today, the *space bar* on the USB kb just doesn't work anymore. I typed in Safari, Nisus Writer Pro, but the space bar on the USB kb will not work (all other keys work, and the spacebar on my MBP works). When I fixed permissions (the keyboard is immaculately clean), and rebooted, nada. When I tried to reset the PRAM (googled), nada. However, right after reboot, when I opened safari, and clicked in the search field, *all the spaces I tried to type BEFORE the reboot appeared*! Like a player piano, the spaces were being typed out, the spaces that I *had already typed*—but which never appeared—until now, AFTER the reboot. I can stop it by hitting any other key,
I can repeat this strange behavior. Does anyone have ANY advice on this?
I have latest snow leopard 10.6.1, 3g RAM (4 in slots).
Thank you, Richard
UPDATE: It actually seems like there is something LAYING on the space bar instead. I tried to type 5 spaces, but when I rebooted, the spaces kept being typed for about 30 seconds, and then stopped. There is nothing on the space bar, however.

Actually, now it's also some other keys plus the shift key. Shift-V doesn't work, neither does Shift-Left Curly Bracket.
There is something really wrong!
Off to apple store equivalent (no Apple store yet in Paris)
thanks, and if anyone has any other advice

  • Drastic drop in HD used space after reboot

So I just rebooted my computer after about 4 days of keeping it on (putting it to sleep when not in use), and my hard drive space dropped significantly. Before the reboot, I cleaned my system cache and had 30.70 GB used (according to MenuMeters), and after reboot I had 30.57GB used. That's a drop of about 130MB over a reboot. The last time I rebooted was after the latest security patch on Aug 1. The reboot took a significantly longer time than usual (usually takes about 5 seconds for shutdown without even loading the wheel, about 27 spins of the wheel on bootup, this time it took about 7 or 8 spins of the wheel on shutdown, and about 30 on bootup). Should I be concerned? Can anyone explain what happened? Over the 4 days, all I did was check e-mail, surf the web, and use MSN.

Actually, I'm a bit of a security nut. I know that some viruses (at least in the past) have worked by flooding your HD with crap and thereby not let you do things that use virtual memory or install any programs, and make your comp run overall really slowly. When I first installed MenuMeters, I noticed my HD space would fill even when I wasn't writing to it myself (not substantially, but 10+ MB at any given time). I asked Apple about this and they explained it was system cache files. Thus, to safeguard (or at least to make myself feel safer), I clean these folders once in a while to make sure something like that isn't happening to me. Of course, I know that if it did, I'd probably know instantly and couldn't really do anything about it anyway, but it makes me feel warm and cuddly inside.
And in case you're wondering why I'm so paranoid on one of the most secure OSes out there, I'm an ex-Windows and ex-Ubuntu user. Both OSes gave me issues on fresh installs (I'm talking fresh, like literally doing nothing but format, install, install drivers, and get system updates), so I trust nothing now. So far, though, I've been using Mac for 6 months and nothing serious has arisen *crosses fingers* so I'm trying to be a bit less paranoid, but it's hard when it's been almost a year since I chucked Windows and I'm kinda in that mindset.

  • How can I make different windows of the same application I have open remain on their respective desktops/spaces after reboot?

    Hi all,
I use the same applications for work, entertainment and other personal activities, so it's impossible to simply assign different apps to different desktops/spaces. Thus, I have open windows of the same programs (Pages, TextEdit, Preview) arranged on several desktops. If I reboot my laptop, the windows are just crammed on Desktop 1. Can something be done about it?

    Barney,
many thanks for your efforts and your time (preparing and posting the screenshot, answering to this question,...).
Unfortunately, moving the focus to the next window only works with windows on the same desktop.
btw, using a german keyboard layout and german language settings the shortcut is "cmd+<".
I can switch with this shortcut between different windows of my Safari which reside on the same desktop, but I cannot swith between different safari windows distributed over several desktops.
    Thanks,

I having a bit of a problem trying to remove a little white space after my Spry Menu bar, when I set it to 8.6em theres a little white space, when I set the width to 9.7 it goes too far, I changed it to 137 pixels, however in Firefox and IE, it messes up the layout.
Also what do you do if there a different browsers, where some layouts are out of place, do you need to detect the browser with JS?

  • Space after negating exclamation mark

Hi, is it possible to add a space after a negating exclamation mark in the code formatting rules such as:
    if (!true) {}   <- I don't want this style
    if (! true) {}  <- I do want this
I think that the Tools -> Options -> Text Editor settings give me quite limited choices when it gets to customizing your code formats. I want to do this for JavaScript if that matters.

The ! means that iPhoto has lost the link to the actual images
    i
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Space after in one style affecting the style before it

I have bit of text like this:
    Bold head
    regular body
when I add space after to the regular body style, it has the effect of adding space after the Bold head, but when I directly apply space after using the Control bar, this doesn't happen!
my regular body style has no space before.
Can anyone see why space after in one style would appear to affect the previous style.
when I say "previous" and "before" I mean in the order they appear relative to each other.
    thank you!
    John

No, there are no manual overrides. I tested with a manual formatting just as an experiment, but then removed it immediately afterward.
InDesign as with many other programs will indicate a modified style with a little "+"  None of my text shows this + sign next to their styles.
    Thank you!

  • Space After....

I know this is possible because I learned how to do it about a year ago, but I didn't remember how
I have a page of paragraphs, and I understand how to use the Space After to designate how much space to leave between each paragraph.
However, within each of my paragraphs, I have indented, bulleted, items.
Which means, I have 'returns' within each paragraph, which means the 'space after' is happening after each 'return' rather than just at the end of each paragraph.
What do I do so that I am in control of this?
    Thank you
    Marion

I have used nested styles, so the first phrase of each paragraph (a question) is a different color.  That's perfect.
I have used shift-enter, so that the extra-space between paragraphs only happens between paragraphs (not between my initial blurb and the bulleted items.)  That's perfect
I am struggling to get the bulleted items to be bulleted
I figured I could create a new style to nest within this 'paragraph style', but I can only nest character styles within my paragraph style.  And character styles do not address bullets.
I figured I could create several independent paragraph styles - apply one style for the non-bulleted areas, and then a bullet style to the lines that need bullet.
But each time I try to apply the para style with bullets, the bullets are happening to the line above the ones I want.  I have played with the paragraph rules (on, off, above, below) but I am not getting what I need.
Is this to abstract to follow?
    Sorry -
    Thanks for your suggestions -
Marion (operating on zero sleep in days)
    It works if I I use Type->insert special character ->Symbol ->Bullet
instead of trying to make a bulleted list

  • Nas drive does not recalculating space after deleting files on Nas Drive??

    Greetings to Respected expert,
Actually we have configure Window server 20082 Storage server. We have NAS drive configured which have 300GB quota limit. The actual data in the folder is 185 GB but it shows only 15 GB free and shows a warning .Please assist me why NAS server does not re-calculate
the space after deleting files or does not leave space. Pardon me if I am not able to clear you my problems.this is very urgent for me.
    Thanks And Regards
    Rajnish Singh

    Hi Rajnish,
As you mentioned "quota limit", it is set via FSRM or specific function on NAS?
Meanwhile could you confirm the number 185GB is accurate? Sometimes a part of used space is just not calculated. You can confirm with checking the total space on NAS locally.
If the number is correct and quota is set via FSRM, check if it is the Disk Quota which not re-calculated the released space. Try to clear the Quota setting and reconfig with 300GB limitation and see if issue still exists.

  • Is there a way to have a blank space after max scroll?

    Hi,
I am a programmer and when I am typing, I don't like to do it when I am at the bottom of the file.
Is there a way to not have to looking down when typing at the end of the file?
Maybe a configuration or an app that can help?
When I was a windows user, editplus would add some blank space after the last line, so you can still look at the center of the display even when typing at the bottom line.
    I use Coda 2 btw.
    thanks!

I am sure that you can do all the creating you want with DVDSP, but it is more complicated than iDVD, and a bit more expensive, too.
Great advice Beverly ... (As usual).
That was going to be my next recommendation as well even though the learning curve is much higher than that of iDvd. It does give much more latitude in terms of creating a theme from scratch. However, here are some of the stock themes in DVDSP that can also be adjusted pretty to bare bones minimum; much the same way you would within iDvd.

Where does one set space after paragraph in the new Pages 5.0? It used to be under text in the Inspector in the previous version, but I just can't find it in this new version. Paragraphs seem to only be dealt with in styles, and the Formatting window for text doesn't seem to have the space after paragraph contrtol that the older Inspector had. What am I missing?

  • Create a list style with unique space after the last list item?

I should start by saying that I'm a web designer and therefore extremely used to using CSS for type setting to the point that I now become frustrated when going back to the print world
So here's what I'm trying to achieve:
    - I want to create a list style for bullet lists
    - I want there to be 3pt space after and space before paragraph breaks
    - I want there to be 9pt space after the entire list (or last list item)
I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this short of overriding the space after amount on the last item each time I use my style.

    Hi supportneeder
    Welcome to the forum.
    Try this link:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=179&mforum=iworktips ntrick
Pay attention to how +"styles work by example"+. Form up the list levels the way you want them and then select them to make the list style.
Personally I can't help remarking on the obtuse behavior of programmers that they manufactured all the problems on the internet and only now, more than a decade later, patch together "solutions" they struggle to implement due to the legacy of all the awful standards we never needed to have in the first place.
    Peter
btw The last list item is always a problem in typesetting. Usually you deal with it by having a particular style for that or the paragraph afte,r all of which can take multiple forms.

  • Space After - Text

Hi, I have some problem with the"space after" function.
As you can see in this image, the firts line, the headline, should send the next text, 10 points bellow.
But all the browsers that I test, they ignore this "css rule"...
    http://www.pgdesignrio.com/revistas.html
Safari, Firefox, Chrome in Mac.  IE 10.0.9

    Hi Dandalo,
There's a Muse bug that lets you set negative padding even though it is invalid in CSS.
You have -1 left padding applied to the headline which is making the entire padding CSS invalid.
If you change it back to 0, that should fix the issue. You can continue to use negative first line indent.
    Hope this helps.

  • Space after Paragraph: How much picas equal a blank line in Garamond Regular 7.5?

I'm using Indesign CC and  would like to add a blank line after every paragraph in my document. I found out how to do that, but the only unit I'm offered is picas. I could probably switch to inches, but that doesn't really help me. My main text is written in Garamond Regular font size 7.5 and I would like to have blank space after each paragraph equal to a blank line written in that font with that size. How do if find out much large a blank line with those font settings is? I guessed and it seems to be equal to 0p7, but it would be great if I could do that without guessing blindly. I'm glad for any help.

I am not sure to understand.  Garamond (or any other typeface) 7.5 equals to… 7.5 pts. But the size of a typeface is measured from ascender to descender, so it does not give you an accurate idea of the real height of the line. But leading is measured from baseline to baseline and this corresponds to the measure you are looking for. Once again, you need to know the leading value and you have to enter this value for the space after.
And 1 pica is equal to 12 pts.
