Space bar no longer opens folders in finder

After upgrading to Mavericks, the space bar no longer opens folders...but it SHOULD according to the footnote on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13872
This is a problem for me, as I have the "spring-loaded folders and windows" unchecked in the Finder preferences, and I just use the spacebar to open folders.

I use spring-loaded folders the same way you do (delay off, space bar only), and I'm seeing the same issue on my end.  It would be one thing if the feature just didn't work at all; however, I'm actually seeing four different behaviors depending on the window's view mode.
Icon view: The window's contents are replaced with the new folder's contents after pressing the space bar once.
List view:  A new window opens (with zoom animation) to display the folder's contents.  This would be the expected behavior, except that the user has to press the space bar *twice* to activate the feature.  The position of the cursor for the first press does not matter... the folder over which the cursor is hovering when the space bar is pressed a second time is the one that will be opened.
Column view:  Nothing happens at all when the space bar is pressed, regardless of the number of presses.  This is the most serious problem.
Cover Flow view:  The behavior is similar to the list view, except that there is no zoom animation when the new window opens.
This really strips away some polish from the Finder's user experience, and hampers the flow of power users.  I've submitted a Radar bug with my findings, and I hope they address the issue soon.

  • Tabs and Opening Folders in Finder

Taking advantage of Maverick's tabbed Finder in fullscreen mode would logically exclude behavior such as double-clicking a folder resulting in the opening of a new Finder window. That makes for (for me) the same annoying search around with Finder windows that I had in 10.8. By definition, the ability to constrain all new windows to a nice, neat tabbed format should be an option. After all, Safari behaves that way unless I really want a new window for some reason. I typically run many apps at the same time, sometimes give presentations, and I dislike clutter. While the new Finder is a long awaited improvement, it needs a new optional default to always open in tabs in the preferences. You could then use Cmmnd-N if you wanted a new browser.
I realize that holding Command while double-clicking a folder results in its opening in a new tab, and I'm slowly getting used to doing that while working in the new Finder. But changing the default is such an easy fix, and I hope it comes out with the next upgrade.

Using [Command]-[T] opens a new Tab in Finder, as does right-clicking a desination folder and choosing "Open in New Tab".
Thanks, yes I appreciate your suggestions. I was amiss not to mention right-clicking (rather clunky for simply opening in a new tab I think), and yes all of those things do work in full screen mode.
What I also neglected to mention is that there is + button to add a new tab, but only when you have at least two tabs open. I think it unintuitive and odd that the designers chose not to implement the + button on every new Finder window. As it is now there is nothing. For starters, you have to know that Finder is capable of tab-browsing, then you either have to make a new tab with Cmnd-T or by going to the File menu (sixth option down). Not very intuitive.
I remember hearing a rather exasberated Steve Jobs explaining to users that they could "go ahead, make as many windows as you want" in reference to compromises made for the then brand new OS X Finder. He wanted something like we finally have now in Mavericks- elegant, smooth file management all in one window. Well, it's all pretty much there now except 'open folders in new tabs' instead a 'new window' default.

  • Can no longer open folders etc by double clicking them

I have suddenly lost the ability to double click on anything on the desktop and open it.  Can now only open things using 'Finder'.  It is not my mouse as I have tried another mouse that I know works and have the same problem.  I have also tried first mouse on another Mac (running Tiger) and the doube-click works fine.
Two things have happened betewen being able to double click and not.  These are :
    1. Used a piece of SW called 'Singular' to try and remove duplicate files.  Only tried it on one (small) folder and it crashed (useless).  So chucked app in trash!
    2. Connected (new) external hard disk via Firewire.  Partitioned ext. disk and did a full system back up.  All went OK.
I've changed mouse settings in Preferences - no difference, so changed them back again.
Any ideas please?  Am about to upgrade to Snow Leopard and would prefer to identify any problems before I start.
    Thanks
    Patricia

Reset the SMC and PRAM, I'd recommend doing each reset 2X. Post back if the issue continues.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Double click no longer opens folders, but opens desktop

Starting a few days ago when I double click a folder on the desktop it no longer opens.  Instead, I am taken to a new desktop window that shows the folder clicked plus all other items on the desktop.  How do I restore the double click to open the folder?  I have tried resetting the double click speed with no results.  Thanks.

Open Mission Control. Close all desktops except Desktop 1 by positioning the cursor over each one and then clicking the X button in the top left corner.

  • .dmg files no longer open in the finder

I just did an archive and reinstall (to solve some unrelated problems). Most things seem fine, but now .dmg files show up on the desktop without any icon, and when I double click them they open Disk Utility instead of mounting in the finder.
It's possible to mount them from within disk utility by selecting the .dmg file and clicking on "open" ... but this is an odd bunch of extra steps, and it seems like something's wrong.
in get info I tried to change the default app to the Finder, but it wouldn't let me.
I've repaired permissions, rebuilt the directory with disk warrior, restarted, etc. .. no luck.
    any thoughts?

The application to choose in "get info" >>"open with" is "DiskImageMounter".

  • Can no longer open anything without finder asking for password verification, but not accepting password

I plugged in an external DVD/CD burner but finder won't let me use it, and a message comes up saying "Finder wants to make changes, type your password to allow this' however, when I type my password it will no longer accept it and has an error code -128 message come up. I can also now not do anything on the desktop without the same finder password verification request happening. Have tried restarting the computer twice with no luck. Running system OSX10.8.2

This might be a rare case in which Repair Permissions in Disk Utility is worth a try.

  • Photoshop CC - right click on title bar no longer opens image dialog box

    Hi,
I just noticed that since the last update of photoshop CC I can no longer access the dialog boxes for image info, image size, canvas size, copy image, etc from the right click menu on the titlebar of the image screen.
I have to resort now to shortcuts like ctrl + alt + i and ctrl + alt + c (image size, canvas size).
    Was this removed on purpose?

I see this got already answered at http://forums.adobe.com/message/6020828#6020828

  • Opening folders with & without new window....

I have just installed Tiger and updated it with 10.4.7.
For both 10.4.6 and 10.4.7 I have been unable to get folders to open in the same window instead of a new one. I have tried checking the box under the Preferences of Finder but it makes no difference. Every folder always opens in a new window.
What am I doing or not doing?
    Thanks.

It still isn't doing what I want it to do.
Let me be certain that you understand my question. I can get this to open a folder in the same window as the parent folder. But in order to get this, I need to have the tool bar on. What I am wanting to do is not have the tool bar visible but still have folders open in the same window. This is the way that I remember the previous OS working.
Anyway, I was able to insert the parameter where you showed me, change it to Boolean, and set it to "No". It stays "No" even when I changed the window settings to hide the tool bar but still opens folders in new windows.
My suspicions are that I either have corrupted SW or that this is something that is not possible under 10.4.X.

  • Space bar toggle

For the second time in 2 months my space bar no longer will toggle between grid view, loupe view and zoom. The last time this happened, a number of other problems followed and it was suggested I trash the Preferences file and all would be well. It worked, though my reconnections were a trial. Since I saved a Prefs file from a week or so ago, I could do this without much trouble, but before I did, I was wondering if there is some shortcut key that turns this function on and off that I have pressed by mistake? As I have done more times than I would like to admit to, I starting typing into the "city" metadata field which de-selected and I kept typing with the usual shortcut problems to correct (depending on the letters I was  typing - a problem I'll place in the Beta 3.2 forum after I check and find out if it was changed).  iMac 24 3.06ghz,  core 2 , Snow Leopard, LR 2.6 ---

This is from the CS4 Help file, so it hasn't changed:
To reposition a rectangle or elliptical marquee, first drag to create the selection border, keeping the mouse button depressed. Then hold down the spacebar and continue to drag. Release the spacebar, but keep the mouse button depressed, if you need to continue adjusting the selection border.
Your Photoshop preferences may be corrupted. Try trashing them.

  • Opening folders in the same tab???

I'm fairly new to Macs and I have a question. I currently run OS 10.5.3. I know that for security reasons (i.e. not accidentally deleting something) that when you open folders in Finder that the default setting is to open each folder in a different window, like below...
    Harddrive 1
    Music
    Nirvana
    Nevermind
    Songs
Is there a way to change the options so that everything opens in one window? It's a real pain to have to X out of so many windows everytime I want to search for something - and please don't tell me to use the search feature lol. I know how to use that but I'm curious if I can override the each folder in a new window option, so that I can just have one window with either several tabs or so I can just hit the back arrow key, forward arrow keys so it looks more like....
    Harddrive 1 -> Music -> Nirvana -> Nevermind -> Songs
For the record, I am the administrator of the computer. For the only other account on the computer (my girlfriends) it opens everything in one window where you can just click the back and forward arrows, like I'm hoping to be able to do. I know she didn't mess with any options either because she's not too computer savvy, so is that the default for non-administrators? I know I didn't set it that way.

The back and forward arrows are to go to the last opened folder and the next.
They function EXACTLY like the back and forward arrows in Safari.
    Finder can't do tabs.
Try pathfinder, as the other poster recommended.

  • Finder Crashing When Opening Folders Containing JPEG Images

    Here's my odd problem.
Finder seems to work okay until I open folders with certain JPEG images in them. Specifically, it seems to crash whenever I open a folder that has images taken with my old Oregon Scientific camera. It gets a little bit annoying, because once I open the folder, Finder crashes... and then it re-launches, +with the problem window still open+... which causes it to crash immediately upon re-opening. And then it re-launches again, again with the same window open, which causes it to crash again, and on and on into the night.
Incidentally... these images also seem to crash Preview. I never had any problem with this before. They worked fine under 10.5, they worked fine under 10.4... they even work fine on OS9. I've tried turning off icon previews, I've tried list view and icon view and coverflow and all that, and it crashes every single time.
If I use GraphicConverter to re-save the images WITHOUT the EXIF data, then Finder seems to be okay. But considering I have nearly a thousand images that were taken with that (decidedly unsophisticated) camera, it's really an inconvenience to convert every single one. On top of it, I'd kind of like to keep my EXIF data where it is.
I'm really kind of starting to regret not waiting for 10.6.1 before installing, because I've encountered problem after problem... and my fiance's iMac is almost unusable, it's so buggy. Most of the issues I've encountered I can live with, at least long enough for Apple to release an update... but this Finder issue is killing me, because I can't even access my photos.
Anyone have this same issue, or some idea of how to fix it?

I've duplicated this behavior on both my MacBook and my fiance's iMac, which are both running 10.6. With my 10.4-enabled G4 and iMac G3, there's no problems.
I think I've at least figured out the actual cause. I just opened a folder of pictures taken with my Oregon Scientific DShot II camera, and it didn't crash the Finder, nor did it kill Preview. The EXIF data was intact. The difference was that with these images, I'd edited them and re-saved with GraphicConverter when I first took them.
After repeating the tests with some other pictures, I think that the problem isn't so much with the EXIF data as it is with the +preview image+. The DShot II camera saves some kind of a preview image (which isn't very good). When I edited these images with GraphicConverter, the application added it's own custom preview, overwriting the original.
For some reason, Finder (and Preview, though I don't know why) handle GraphicConverter's preview image, but can't seem to be able to deal with the preview image that the DS2 embedded into the image. Why this should change with 10.6, when all previous versions of the software worked perfectly fine, I have no idea.

  • Suddenly my space bar is no longer giving me the hand tool to move around on my artwork window.  How do I reset this?

Suddenly my space bar is no longer giving me the hand tool to move around on my artwork window.  How do I reset this?

Thanks for getting back. I know my answers seem too obvious at times, but never leave out the simple ones just in case.
So lets look at two things: Keyboard Shortcuts and System Preferences.
Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts opens a dialog box. Press your Option key, and the Cancel button turns into a Reset button to get shortcuts back to defaults. Clicking on Reset may fix it.
The second is Preference resets. Hold down cmd-opt-shift and start Photoshop. It will ask if you wish to delete the settings file. Answering "Yes" many times clears up the problem.

  • Why do none of the links that I put in my outgoing yahoo emails no longer underline themselves and become live when I finish typing them and hit the space bar?

Previously, when I typed my email address in an outgoing email or cut and pasted a link from my browser bar the link would become 'live' when I hit the space bar or 'enter' key. The link would turn blue and underline itself and the person receiving the email could just click on that live link and be taken to the site. Now the link does not turn blue or underline itself and the receiver must cut and paste the link into their browser bar to use it.
Why? I did not change anything in Yahoo or Mozilla.
I have deleted and reinstalled Java to no effect. I am using html in Yahoo.

As it turns out, many others have been having similar issues on other browsers. It seems that maybe Yahoo! is taking a much longer time to load or something like that. Either way, its been working on and off all week, and the same issue even showed up yesterday with IE 8 instead of FF. It still loads faster than IE 8, but again is spotty. Some people think the issue may be with mail.yimg.com or s.yimg.com, which I could see was the loading url in the left corner whenever Yahoo! Mail was refusing to work. A couple of people said blocking it caused the issue. Alternatively, some people suggested blocking it to solve the problem. Does anyone have any information on that? Again, I have no add-ons that would be blocking any urls, and my firewall hasn't any records of it. I really don't want to do anything to mess up my browsers more than they may have already been. Thanks for all of your help so far!

  • Clicking on enclosing folder's icon in the title bar doesn't open Finder

I create PDF booklet from Mellel document using PDF service. Preview application opens newly created PDF document. I Command+click on its icon in the document window's title bar, move cursor one level lower and click on the encompassing folder's ("temp") icon. I expect new Finder's window to open and show me PDF document selected. However, Finder doesn't open. Disk permissions repaired. One week old clean Leopard installation. When I click on the icon in the TextEdit window's title bar and do the same, encompassing Finder's folder opens in a new window. Word also opens Finder window. ONly Preview doesn't work. It used to work at least one month ago. Where the problem could be?
