Space bar won't type a space

I have had this problem for a few years, over several versions of Photoshop in several Mac operating systems. Currently I am using CS4 on a Mac 10.6.8. My space bar randomly stops typing a space when I am typing a line of text. I can type every letter except a space. Sometimes the space bar starts working properly if I save the file and start typing again. Sometimes I have to quit Photoshop to make the space bar start working properly. The problem doesn't happen often, but when it shows up it is annoying for awhile. Any thoughts as to where I might look to solve the issue?

When you post for help, please state which OS X is installed.
If you aren't sure, click About this Mac from your Apple menu .
Try restarting your Mac then try the keyboard and mouse.
If you can't restart from the Apple menu , hold the power button down until the screen turns black. Wait about ten seconds then restart.

Space bar won't change into hand tool while pressing

Today, I was suprprise to find out the space bar in my computer white trying to move my image to centain section.
It is a very very handy and timesaving shortcut. does anyone know anyrhing or have the same issue, using Illustrator CC/16?
For instance I came to think is my keyboard but I checked with older software and it's working file.
I appreciate any imput.

Spacebar as hand tool is restored!! I think Dave was right about something interfering with it. The only thing that i changed on my system before this happened was that I unlocked my login in keychain access. Once I went back to keychain access and locked login again, did a restart and opened photoshop, the spacebar as hand tool was restored! So if anyone else has this problem, think back to what you did last on your system and revert to how it originally was. Hope this helps somebody out there

CS3 space bar won't work as hand tool

I have just set up a new computer -Vista Ultimate 64 bit and cannot get the spacebar to work as a hand tool in Photoshop. Please help! Thanks....Susan

Why Doesn't My Space Bar work?

Help!! This be a simple problem. I think I accidently touched some combination of fn, ctrl, open apple or shift. Now my space bar won't make spaces in text.

A Restart should cure your immediate problem.
If you want to investigate further, look in

Space Bar and Scrolling + text wrap

I'm not sure why, but my space bar won't scroll down. I think I can't properly s elect the window for whatever (I don't get the blue glowy outline around it).
About the same time, my text stopped wrapping properly so my words spilt in the middle when I reach the edge of a text box instead of bouncing down to the new l ine.

Space bar on keyboard missing on iPad 2

On both of my iPads (2&3) as well as my iphone, the keyboard is displaying but not the spacebar. it is occurring only on Safari (not Pages or other apps to type in)

If you are typing in the URL field in Safari, you will not see the space bar. You cannot add spaces in the URL/address field and the iPad knows that when you tap in that field (place the insertion point) so the space bar does not appear on the keyboard.
It is perfectly normal behavior.
Tap in the search field in Safari and the space at appears.

Just got my ipad for Xmas. It really is great, but I have a lot to learn. Somehow when exploring the keyboard I have managed to replace the keyboard with various other exclamation marks etc. I can't get the space bar back. Please help a poor beginner.

If you are using the keyboard in a text field where the space bar is not needed, the space bar disappears. When you are typing a web address in the URL field in Safari, for example, there will be no space bar on the keyboard.
Is that the behavior that you are seeing? Tapping the ABC key or the 123? Keys will also change the keyboard to different characters.

Space bar short cut

Anybody know why a document sometimes lets me move around the page with hand tool using space bar short cut and sometimes the space bar short cut does not work?

Do you have FireFox or specifically, GMail running in FireFox? Try quitting FireFox and it will probably go away. I've posted the same problem on CS4 Illustrator. It also happens InDesign, probably Photoshop too. Speculation is it is Flash causeing the problem, I agree with those who link it to FireFox or Google or GMail and Flash. After quitting FireFox the space + command zoom and space bar hand tool and all space bar related quick keys came back. I relaunch FireFox and it worked for a while, but logging into my GMail account brings the problem back.

Strange space bar behaviour on T410s keyboard (makes space + cursor right)

I have just got in a T410s to my office which has a very quirky behaviour when hitting the space bar. It makes the space AND a cursor right. It happens in every application. The laptop is running Win 7 64-bit Enterprise.
But, here comes the quirky thing; It doesn't happen if I plug in an external keyboard. AND I have also tried replacing the keyboard unit itself with a brand new CRU, so it can't be a problem with the keyboard itself (except maybe the controller if it's down on the motherboard).
So, it feels likely it has to be a utility or a setting which the user has enabled by mistake, or possibly a driver error for the internal keyboard.
Any clues on what could be the cause?

Command Spacebar opens Spotlight as you have found out. If you want to change languages you need to say what app you are using to write the story in, I'm guessing you are using Pages or MS Word. If that's the case
Pages: Open Inspector - Click the T tab - Click Language and change your language.
MS Word: Tools Menu - Language - Choose your language.

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

PhotoshopCS6 My history won't update my actions until i until i tap the space bar.

I recently started using CS6 on my mac and I use a wacom intous. Everytime i make a brush stroke the history won't update, so I can't undo or switch tools unless I hold space bar and move. Anyone else having this issues?

Hey ead, I had the same problem too, couldn't add songs to my Itouch.
So I suspected the fact that I smashed up my Ipod pretty good might've done something to the syncing mechanism or something... but either way a quick fix I used was:
1. Go into "Devices" tab in Itunes
2. Click the checkbox "Sync with this Ipod over Wifi
Definitely a temporary fix but w/e it worked for me.

Why won't words move sometimes with space bar?

Sometimes I can't get the first word of a sentence to move over with my space bar. It will move with the Tab button, but I only want to move it a couple of spaces over.
Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't let me. Anyone have the solution?

IMac Faulty Space Bar

I bought my imac in november last year and the space bar on it has always been wonky. However it is only recently that I have started typing a lot on it and noticed that it effects the performance of the keyboard as you are unable to press it from one end. Is it too late to take it back or not? Or is there something i can do?
Also I have noticed that compared to the keyboard that the iMac came with before OS X Lion it is incredibly noisy when typing and the keys aren't as soft to type on. I was just wondering if any one else has noticed that or whether that is just me?

if you're not able to press the keys down, then take it into an apple store for a possible replacement.
if the keys press down normally but nothing types on the computer, try an SMC and PRAM reset.

Also, when you bought your computer it should have come with 1 year hardware warranty unless you purchased the 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan, in which case you're definitely covered. So if you think it is faulty due to the hardware, then you should still be able to get it replaced. If they determine it was 'accidental damage' it won't be covered.
